Fall 2009 Upcoming Volunteer Events Volunteer Opportunities Helpline Update

VOLUNTEERS SHOW TREVOR PRIDE ACROSS THE COUNTRY This past summer saw annual Gay Pride events take place in cities across the United States and, thanks to the efforts of many volunteers, The Trevor Project was able to have a presence at several Pride festivals, some for the first time. While continuing Trevor’s involvement with the Los Angeles and New York Pride events, the Volunteer Committee’s Pride-in-aBox project was able to establish a presence for Trevor at Pride festivals in Houston, Long Beach, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Francisco, Tulsa, and Washington, D.C. Dedicated volunteers in those cities worked hard to get booth sponsors and recruit additional volunteers to help work the events. Through this important outreach, LGBTQ youth were able to learn first-hand about The Trevor Project’s vital crisis and suicide prevention resources. Our enormous thanks to the generous sponsors and outstanding volunteers who worked so hard on this important project.

Trevor Pool & Garden Party Makes a Splash On July 26, The Trevor Project held its annual Pool & Garden Party at the Hollywood Hills home of Yawar Charlie and Chris Baker. More than 20 volunteers performed swimmingly, helping to ensure that the event went off without a hitch. The amazing team that worked hard to make sure that this year’s pool party was successful included Michael Consbruck, Don Evers, Michael Gonzales, Mattian Orth, and Phillip Beverly helping with set-up, Len and Mario with checking in guests, Alfred Robles and Bryan Keller helping with the raffle, Todd Young, Vladamir Jakobac, Vincent May and Michael Saucedo overall making sure the guests had a good time; and Todd Young and Sherrie Lamareaux leading the post-event strike down. Thanks to the fantastic efforts of the team that helped put this event together, the Pool & Garden Party was able to raise $16,000 for The Trevor Project. An extra special thanks to David Anderson and Michael Love for their leadership in helping make this event a success.

Youth Events at Gay Days Anaheim On October 2-3, volunteers and LGBTQ youth joined The Trevor Project for a fun-filled weekend at the Happiest Place On Earth. Both days in the parks featured gatherings only available over this weekend, including scavenger hunts, a lesbian ice cream social, couples dinner and gay brunch at the Jazz Kitchen, a single riders gathering and many more events targeted to families, youth, couples and Mouseketeers of every ilk. On October 3, LGBTQ youth participated in events just for them, including a scavenger hunt, lunch, and a Trevor Teen Dance Party with Club TigerHeat’s DJ Ray Rhodes at the turntables. At the Gay Days Info Center, people were able to visit the many sponsors and exhibitors, including The Trevor Project. Volunteers helped to spread the word, and oversee the scheduled Youth Events.

Under the guidance of East Coast Call Center Manager Kelli Peterman, the The Trevor Project was proud to add 15 new Helpline counselors to the already strong team on the East Coast. The new inductees went through a rigorous process from applying for the job, multiple interviews, eight-hour long training sessions and making sure the applicants can be available during the times needed. Kelli was extremely proud of this class because as she put it, “the group really seemed to bond so well and brought a sense of humor with them that can be so important in this line of work.”

The process of evaluating the potential candidates is never easy because there are so many people that truly want to help and make a difference, but it is vital that the individual is a right fit for the job. While interviewing the candidates, Kelli made sure they would be a good fit as well as making sure each individual embodied passion for The Trevor Project’s mission. One of the rewarding parts of the interview process is listening to the reasons why people want to do this job. So many people have such diverse and interesting stories as to why they have come to Trevor to volunteer, and in the end we are all striving to truly make a difference and help those in need! Congratulations to the fantastic group of new East Coast helpline counselors!
