It’s one of the highlights of the year at The Tri-City News. As you may recall, we offered online ballots and a $500 gift card from Coquitlam Centre as an incentive for you, our loyal readers, to cast your votes for The Best in the Tri-Cities in over 170 business categories. We had almost 2,000 voters this year! While our contest does not qualify as a scientific survey, the level of participation does lend credibility to the outcome, as do our strict rules on how we count and qualify the ballots. Each ballot must contain a minimum number of 25 votes, only one ballot per person (IP address) were accepted. I want to offer my sincere congrats to the businesses who received this year’s A List award. They are most deserving of our recognition as the Best in the Tri-Cities. Change is afoot as the traditional centre of Port Moody — aptly known as Moody Centre — faces evolution from a largely exclusively single-family home community to an area with more multi-family housing, as well as increased commercial space, designed to take advantage of the Evergreen Extension station. Regardless of what happens in Moody Centre and nearby Inlet Centre, a variety of new and established Port Moody businesses are making their mark, offering exceptional products and services. And some of them are featured in this section as Tri-City News readers’ choices in our A-List.

OU R FAVOURIT ES W ITH TE A M C A N A DA BOBS E L D AT HLE T E J U LI E JO H N SO N O F P ORT M OODY I moved to Port Moody because I love how accessible and easy it is to get outside and escape the crowds of big city living. I’ve lived here for two years and don’t see myself going anywhere else. The neighbourhood is trendy, there are tons of young families and the trails, water and mountains as a backyard can’t be beat!

As a bobsled athlete, can you tell us about your favourite places to train in Port Moody? When training in Port Moody, I train at the Port Moody Recreation Complex. I love that they have an indoor track, a modern gym and a hot tub/steam room to meet my needs as a high-performance athlete!

So, after training in Port Moody, where do you head for a beverage or snack? Any favourite menu items? My go-to is Caffe Divano. They serve amazing coffee (pretraining necessity) and tons of healthy breakfast/lunch options. My favourite is the turkey cranberry sandwich. I do indulge in their baked goods every now and then as well (I can’t pick just one for a favourite!). I also really love that they donate leftover food to a local charity at the end of each day.

For people new to Port Moody, is there anywhere you recommend they check out? There is so much to do here! I highly recommend a walk along the Shoreline Trail down to Rocky Point Park. Spending an afternoon out at the park and pier, getting some ice cream and finishing the day off with a cold beer at one of the breweries is what I always do with anyone visiting!

As much as we know training is a big part of your life, are there any other activities you really enjoy doing in Port Moody? You can find me outside a lot - from walking my dogs on one of the numerous trails to cycling to hot yoga at Oxygen Yoga to paddleboarding. We have an amazing community and surrounding area that accommodate an active lifestyle. I love being outside and Port Moody is the perfect place to accommodate that!

Finally, do you have any words of wisdom? My advice is to get outside and play!

Working at Saint St Grill, I am spoiled with the amazing food Chef Tyler creates just for me. When I do eat elsewhere, I tend to go to places like Rehanah’s Roti for a quick lunch or Aroma Indian to take home and eat in our garden. A new favourite for us is visiting Tonia at Black Sugar. She has excellent coffee and tempting pastries.

For people new to Port Moody, is there anywhere you recommend they check out? We always recommend Linda’s Wish on a Star in Newport Village. She has been our go-to for all gift shopping. Vivio for flowers, her work is wonderfully unique and artful. Angelo’s Salon & Spa, of course, Eden Automotive for all things car-related, Summer Sundays Concert at Rocky Point Park and who could forget Brewers Row? I have missed dozens of other businesses and things to do, but just get out there and walk our city. There is so much to do. You won’t be disappointed.

As much as we know the restaurant business is a big part of your life, are there any other activities you really enjoy doing in Port Moody? A day for us is a waterfront stroll to Rocky Point with our dog. Quite often we start at Reed Point, end at Old Orchard Hall and then back again. Along the way, we meet people we know and enjoy some conversation. Port Moody is an incredible community to live and work. That is why we chose to do both here 25 years ago.

Thanks so much, Jay. Finally, do you have any advice or words of wisdom? Unlike the rest of the Lower Mainland, Port Moody has been relatively unscathed with big box/chain stores. That is what makes us unique and special. Although we have witnessed growth in our city, we have also maintained that important community feel. We know everyone that lives on our block. We know most of the business owners on our street. We really enjoy being part of Port Moody Car Free Day. A person can live anywhere, we choose to live in Port Moody, a community. My advice to our city council, keep up the good work.

Growing up playing soccer in Coquitlam for the then-Eagle Ridge Westwood Youth Soccer Association, we trained and played at various parks throughout the city but I always enjoyed playing at Town Centre Stadium on the grass field before all the turf was put in. That had to be one of the best grass fields around the Lower Mainland and playing in the stadium was always fun. Coquitlam Crunch is a great spot to get some cardio in and always enjoyed doing that with the teams I played on and coached.

After a long day at the rink, where do you head for a beverage or snack? Any favourite menu items? I like to cook so I generally head home and make a nice meal, but if I do go out, I am a sucker for hot wings and spicy food. There are a few around town that I like and I don’t want to single anyone out so I’ll just say there’s a bunch I like!

For people new to Coquitlam, is there anywhere you recommend they check out?

When you’re not at an Express game, Mundy Park is really nice! There are a bunch of different trails, frisbee golf and great for dogs!

As much as we know hockey is a big part of your life, are there any other activities you really enjoy doing in Coquitlam? Where and what? I really enjoy being outdoors so I try and get out and hike, walk or snowshoe in the winter I find it helps me de-stress or clear my mind, especially after a long day or week. I am a big sports fan as well so I try and stay up to date on all my teams in the major sports.

Prior to that, I lived in Burnaby and worked at a commercial Real Estate office in downtown Vancouver. I grew up in Maple Ridge and when my husband and I decided to buy a home and put down roots, Coquitlam was the best option for us and we moved to Burke Mountain in 2010. We have worked together in the real estate business for the past several years and earlier this year, we expanded our team to form our company Permack and Associates – focusing on delivering outstanding customer service and delivering incredible results to our clients throughout the Tri-Cities and greater Vancouver. We spend a great deal of time and effort organizing community events and fundraising for our local women’s shelter – Tri-City Transitions – and combined with our Closing with Kindness program, our team donates close to $30k each year to local charities on behalf of our clients.

Being so involved in local real estate, can you tell us about your favourite neighbourhoods? Well, Burke Mountain is definitely my favourite spot in Coquitlam. There are trails connecting every corner of the community, and the views, nature and people are unparalleled. I think the thing I like most is how connected our little community is. With the exception of the handful of folks still here from 40 years ago, virtually everyone is pretty new to the community and reaching out to connect with one another. We also really love heading over to Port Moody to enjoy Brewers Row, Rocky Point Park and Suter Brook Village – another one of our favourite neighbourhoods.

So, after a long day in the office, where do you like to unwind? Well, since a long day in the office for me usually means hours on the road in my car or with clients, I really do like to be at home with a glass of wine, my husband and our dogs. But when I’m looking to get out to enjoy this beautiful part of the world, you can’t beat a long walk on the PoCo dike, or some of the incredible hiking trails right in our backyard on Burke Mountain. In the summer months, we also love riding our scooters to some of the local breweries and coffee shops. And, during the holiday season, who doesn’t love taking a stroll around the Lights at LaFarge Lake?

For people new to Coquitlam, are there any hidden gems you recommend they check out? We really like to explore all areas of the Tri-Cities. Going out for breakfast has to be amongst our favourite things to do, and our favourite local breakfast spot is Izba Bistro, just down the hill from us in Port Coquitlam. We also recently discovered Snowy Village on Pinetree for amazing Korean shaved ice! Saint St. Grill in Port Moody is our go-to restaurant for special occasions. Artisan Gifts and Flowers is my favourite new spot for finding unique and original gifts and florals. For sweets and treats we love stopping in at Europe Bakery in Port Coquitlam. And for good coffee, you can’t beat the atmosphere and friendly staff at Caffe Divano. Let’s not forget about Gabi & Jules for the BEST pies in greater Vancouver too!

As much as we know real estate is a big part of your life, are there any other activities you really enjoy doing in Coquitlam? When my head isn’t buried in real estate, you can usually find me exploring all corners of the world. I love to travel and I make time every year to discover new places, people and cultures with my husband. In my spare time, I love to read, learn new languages, go to concerts, take road trips, cook, discover new wines and dine out. I train three days a week at Function Health Club in Port Coquitlam, and I have recently taken up playing ice hockey for the very first time. Thanks to my fantastic skating lessons at PoCo Rec Centre, I’m definitely ready to take to the ice!

Thanks so much, Rebecca. Finally, do you have any advice or words of wisdom? I’m a firm believer that you should never stop learning! Whether it’s a new skill, a new language or some fun hobby you always wanted to try, just go for it. Seek out new adventures, take risks, give more than you get and place a higher value on experiences over material things. You never know – you might find a new passion that you had never even considered! Every new experience opens up your heart and mind to connect with other people in a positive and meaningful way, and at the end of the day, that is the most important thing. Lastly, listen to more music; it’s good for your soul.

n Port Coquitlam, you either live on the north side or the south side. And on either side of the Lougheed Highway and the CP Rail yard, there are large, defining projects in the works. On the south side, there is the massive renovation of the Port Coquitlam recreation complex. The $132-million project on the edge of downtown PoCo will take the existing two rinks and add a third as well as a leisure pool and an incorporated Terry Fox Library. The 205,000-sq. ft. complex is due to be completed in June 2021. On the north side, development in the Dominion Triangle continues rapidly. Warehouses are going up by the week along with many more units of housing and plenty of commercial space. And sometime in the future, a Fremont connector will, well, connect points north to the Lougheed. With all this development, it’s good to know there are a variety of businesses and services in PoCo that have received Tri-City News readers’ stamps of approval in this A-List.

I’m a franchise co-owner, manager and curator of 4Cats Arts Studio Shaughnessy with my cousin, Messy Marnie. We’ve been making art and getting creative at our studio in downtown since we opened in 2012. We adore sharing our love of the arts with all the families and children of our community.

As an artist, can you tell us about your favourite neighbourhoods in Port Coquitlam? I’m very fond of downtown south side of Port Coquitlam! Having my art studio in the heart of the city has been such a vibrant place to be. Being amongst the variety of shops, restaurants and services, boosts my community spirit. Downtown is so unique, walkable and family friendly. Most of my time is spent in our charming downtown neighbourhood. Seeing growth and contributing to this area is exciting. I have recently been elected as the president of the PoCo Business Improvement Association and look forward to working closely with our members and work to promote their interests. I grew up in the central Port Coquitlam area, with Elks Park as our playground. Just a short walk down the Donald Street path into downtown was a nice convenience for residents. Recently the walkway was extended and hosts beautiful gardens of flowers, plants, and trees to enjoy along the way.

After a long day in the studio, where do you like to unwind? I usually unwind at home while enjoying time with my two boys, my husband and our dog. We also enjoying walking the trails at Colony Farm Regional Park or enjoying the open air patio at the Gillnetter Pub, with relaxing views of the Pitt River.

For people new to Port Coquitlam, are there any hidden gems you recommend they check out? A visit to the PoCo Heritage Museum is a must to take in. The displays and exhibits highlight the unique history of Port Coquitlam. My grandparents came to PoCo in 1950, so my family roots are deep here. Feeling connected to this area is important to me and the museum is a wealth of information to anyone new to Port Coquitlam.

As much as we know art is a big part of your life, are there any other activities you really enjoy doing in Port Coquitlam? I love watching my boys play lacrosse at the arena, the local box and fields. Go PoCo Saints! Can’t wait for them to play and practise in the new recreation centre! We also love to take in the festivals and events in the city. May Day is one of my favourites. It’s a family tradition to be part of it, in some capacity. Many of my family members have been in the Royal Party over the years, including my sister, who was May Queen in 1989. I was Princess and my son was a Lancer last year! I enjoy volunteering. There are so many opportunities to help and give back to our community.

I started in a small dinner theatre in Vernon B.C. in 1987. I was hired as a bartender extraordinaire! One night, one of the male leads in the show failed to show up. The owner/director, Maz, came to me, handed me some costumes and the script and said, “Mark, you’ve seen the show more than anyone. You have five minutes to get ready, you’re on stage in 10 minutes!” I haven’t left the stage since! Maz expanded her business in 1988 to Port Coquitlam and I was eager to join her here. In 1997, Maz sold the business so me and my partner, Sheila Sharma, opened The Giggle Dam in 2001. We were tired of being on the road and wanted to create a solid business, where we could make our own work and secure a future for ourselves. We borrowed money off of friends and family, and The Giggle Dam was born! We are so fortunate to be in such a supportive community. We are able to delight crowds all year round with our unique brand of comedy and killer band. (it’s kind of like Saturday Night Live with dinner!)

I just love how the downtown core of Port Coquitlam has grown and become a cool and quaint heart of PoCo! One of my favorite hidden gems of PoCo is Minnekhada Park. It’s just beautiful there, and its where we were married in 1994. It’ll always hold a special place in my heart. In my spare time, I golf and enjoy many of the wonderful restaurants in Port Coquitlam, playing cards with friends, watching movies and hanging out with my two beautiful daughters. I look forward to entertaining all the residents of Port Coquitlam in the near future. If you’ve never been to The Giggle Dam, you must come!

Thanks so much, Mark. Care to share a joke? A quick (clean) Joke? Sure: One day at Carnoustie Golf course, Mark joined two brothers named Juan and Jose. Jose hit a ball so hard that it went right through his brother! Jose turned to Mark and said, “Cool! I’ve never had a hole-in-Juan before!”
