HOUSING – ASSISTED LIVING Independent Living - BC Housing
Independent Living BC (ILBC) is a subsidized, assisted-living program that provides housing with support services to eligible seniors and people with disabilities. If you qualify, you could live in your own unit in an assisted living residence. Each residence has private units, shared dining and social areas, housekeeping services, personal care services and emergency response. Independent Living BC is a partnership between BC Housing, provincial health authorities, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and non-profit and private-market housing providers. The program’s assisted living units provide a middle option between home care and residential care.

Exercise
Exercise ideas for people with mobility issues Physical activity is vital to overall health. The World Health Organization says limiting time spent being idle and taking advantage of opportunities to get moving — even if it’s just a little bit of exercise — can go a long way toward improving overall health. Adults should get between 150 and 300 minutes a week of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity, and that includes older adults and those with chronic conditions or disabilities. Individuals with limited mobility due to age or preexisting medical conditions may wonder how they can meet the guidelines for exercise. Those with chronic pain or illness sometimes find that exercising for more than a few minutes can be challenging. Even brief periods of exercise can pay dividends, and there are various
approaches people can take to work around mobility and other issues.
Explore chair exercises Just because you are seated doesn’t mean you can’t get a workout in. Seated chair exercises can work various muscle groups. Seated arm rows, tummy twists, overhead arm raises, hand squeezes with a tennis ball, inner thigh squeezes, leg lifts and extensions, and many other exercises can be customized to be performed in a chair.
Use resistance bands Resistance bands are like giant rubber bands that can be used to build up strength and flexibility. Resistance bands are effective, low-cost gear that can offer high-impact results for building muscle, staying fit and increasing mobility. Resistance bands
can be used in lieu of hand weights for many exercises and be ideal for those who find barbells and dumbbells are challenging to maneuver.
Try Tai Chi or Yoga Exercises like Tai Chi and yoga exercises integrate awareness of body movement with the exercise through coordinated breathing. The exercises encourage people to focus on slow, fluid movements and deep stretching. Seniors and others with limited mobility are advised to first discuss fitness regimens with a physician to get a green light to proceed. Then exercise regimens can be started gradually and altered to become more vigorous as the body acclimates to exercise. Increase duration and frequency as strength and endurance builds.

Fraud Awareness
Protect yourself from scams & fraud
V
Scammers can target any Canadian or Canadian business. Here are some tips and tricks to protect you from scams and fraud. Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it is.
V o a i
Don’t be intimidated by high-pressure sales tactics. If a telemarketer tries to get you to buy something or to send them money right away: • Request the information in writing • Hang up Watch out for urgent pleas that play on your emotions.
i k m f t a h f a c n s h
Don’t be afraid to say no
Do your research
Always verify that the organization you’re dealing with is legitimate before you take any other action: • Verify Canadian charities with the Canada Revenue Agency • Verify collection agencies with the appropriate provincial agency • Look online for contact information for the company that supposedly called you, and call them to confirm • Verify any calls with your credit card company by calling the phone number on the back of your credit card If you’ve received a call or other contact from a family member in trouble, talk to other family members to confirm the situation. Watch out for fake or deceptive ads, or spoofed emails. Always verify the company and its services are real before you contact them.
Don’t give out personal information
Beware of unsolicited calls where the caller asks you for personal information, such as: • Your name • Your address • Your birthdate • Your Social Insurance Number (SIN) • Your credit card or banking information If you didn’t initiate the call, you don’t know who you’re talking to.
Beware of upfront fees
Many scams request you to pay fees in advance of receiving goods, services, or a prize. It’s illegal for a company to ask you to pay a fee upfront before they’ll give you a loan. There are no prize fees or taxes in Canada. If you won it, it’s free. As We Age • Seniors Resource Guide • 2021

Covid-19 Safety

Volunteer safely during the pandemic Volunteers are vital to the survival of many charitable organizations. Without people willing to offer their time and expertise free of charge, many nonprofits would find it difficult, if not impossible, to meet their missions. The global pandemic that begin in late 2019 and continued into 2020 changed many aspects of life as the world knew it, and that includes volunteering. Social distancing measures and stay-at-home mandates discouraged people from leaving their homes and medical experts note that the risk for severe illness from COVID-19 increases with age. In recognition of that threat, many retirees who were heavily involved in volunteering prior to the pandemic were forced to cease working as volunteers, which could have a negative effect on their mental health as the pandemic continues. A report from the Mayo Clinic Health System noted that adults over age 60 experienced greater life satisfaction and greater positive changes in their perceived health as a result of volunteering. Many people have continued to volunteer during the pandemic, and those that want to do so can take these steps to make sure their efforts to give back are as safe as possible.
Speak with your physician first Anyone, but especially seniors, who wants to volunteer during the pandemic should discuss those aspirations with their physicians prior to offering their services to charitable organizations. Doctors can discuss the acute and chronic threats posed by the COVID-19 virus and examine each individual’s medical history to help potential volunteers decide if working with a local charity is safe. In addition, doctors can check patients for COVID-19 symptoms and even have them tested to make sure they won’t be putting anyone in danger should they decide to volunteer.
Contact the organization prior to volunteering Some organizations may not be allowing potentially at-risk volunteers to perform in-person tasks. Contact the organization you hope to work with prior to signing up to confirm your eligibility, but also to discuss the safety protocols they’ve put in place to protect the health of their volunteers.
Monitor your own health If you’ve signed up to volunteer, it’s vital that you monitor your own health. Health officials believe the COVID-19 virus has spread so rapidly for a number of reasons, including the likelihood that many people have had the virus but shown no symptoms. Charitable organizations will no doubt assess the health of each volunteer when they show up to work,
but volunteers also should make such assessments on their own. Check your temperature each day and familiarize yourself with the symptoms of COVID-19. If you suspect you are unwell or are even slightly under the weather, contact the charity and tell them you won’t be showing up that day. Operating with an abundance of caution during the pandemic can save lives.
Consider virtual volunteering Virtual volunteering is a safe way to give back that won’t expose volunteers or others to the COVID-19 virus. Charitable organizations need behind-the-scenes help just as much as they need volunteers with their boots on the ground. Virtual volunteers can help with fundraising efforts and event planning, but also help charities overcome the logistical challenges of operating and meeting their missions during the pandemic. Prior to volunteering during the pandemic, prospective volunteers can follow numerous steps to ensure volunteering is safe, both for them and the people they’re trying to help.
HOW TO HELP DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC
