NIKI JACQUES Nufloors is entering its 30th year of business. Peter Denroche opened the doors to Nufloors Coquitlam in April of 1986. Now a second generation family business, Peter’s daughter Niki has plans to keep the family business going for another 30 years. “I take pride in every relationship I build in the community. Every customer is important, every employee is important. The most valuable thing I have is my staff, and I appreciate all that they do with me and for me, day in and day out. I couldn’t run this business without their help, their knowledge or their dedication.” Built on trust, loyalty and relationships, Nufloors has prided itself on a name that Tri-City residents can count on for all their flooring needs. They are a full service store and offer full warranty on all products they carry and everything they install. Over half of Nufloors employees have been with the company for more than 20 years. That is a testament to the values of this family run business. You can be confident that, from your first interaction with the receptionist to your experience with their certified installers, that your satisfaction is Nufloors number one priority. In this era of information overload, Nufloors has the knowledge and experience to guide you as you make your flooring decisions. New flooring is one of the biggest purchases you will make for your home. Nufloors is committed to helping you choose a product that you not only love but is durable, reliable and manufactured by companies that have the same values as you do. Nufloors stands behind ever product they sell. Niki and her staff invite you to drop in, say hello and experience the Nufloors difference.

March 8th, International Women’s Day, is an excellent time to celebrate the accomplishments of women in business. Over the past 60 years women have made meaningful advances both as entrepreneurs and corporate leaders. Shopping at La Boutique is always a treat. The store is well laid out, clean and organized. Full of stylish options in a variety of sizes. Customers love the fact that Barbara posts many of her items on Instagram and Facebook giving them the convenience of browsing on line. A few days per week you can meet Barbara’s rescue dog Bella in the store…she is most definitely a favorite attraction. DR. MYRNA PEARCE

Dr Pearce graduated from the UBC School of Dentistry in 1985 and opened her own dental practice right out of school. She wanted to practice dentistry the way she thought it should be done, with an attention to detail and a focus on strong relationships with her patients and team members.
Dr. Candace Woodman studied Biology and Animal Physiology at Capilano College and Simon Fraser University for four years prior to dental school. CAROLE WEBBER 28th Anniversary, Reflections Books. After many years of dedicated work and good customer service, Carole is able to step back a little from her busy store and work only two days a week. Ordering and book-keeping are done at home. She opened Reflections with a business partner in 1988 and after buying him out nine years later, expanded with The Oasis Wellness Centre upstairs. The 1990’s were difficult for small stores like Reflections, as big box stores opened and internet buying began. However, Reflections diversified their store inventory, offered psychic readings daily and focused on serving their customers well. It has paid off and now there is a trend to ‘buy local’ and many small stores are booming again.

Dr. Carol Thorpe has been practicing dentistry in Coquitlam since 1985. She moved to the Port Coquitlam area in 1968 at the age of 10 years old. Originally from Penticton, her family moved to the Lower Mainland so her mother could seek cancer treatment that was available at Vancouver General Hospital. In her earlier years, Dr. Thorpe attended Glen Elementary, Mary Hill Junior Secondary and Port Coquitlam High School, all in the same classes as Terry Fox. She remembers having classes in the “old original building” at Glen School, where there were separate entrances for boys and girls. Her business is only blocks away from her elementary school! Dr. Thorpe has seen the substantial changes in the Tri-Cities over the years. After high school, she attended Simon Fraser University and obtained an honours degree in biology. During her first year, she taped science classes for Terry Fox so he could continue his studies while he was hospitalized for cancer treatment. Dr. Thorpe had to remind her female friends to “censor” their girl chat during classes because these tapes were going to be sent to a boy! It is quite possible Terry Fox listened to some humourous moments during his hospital stay.
Dr. Carol L. Thorpe, Dentist Dr. Carol Thorpe Inc.
Upon completing her honours degree, Dr. Thorpe was then accepted to the University of British Columbia to obtain doctorate in dental medicine. She then returned to her home turf and set up a brand new dental practice in 1985. She has been able to enjoy her profession and her community ever since. Being a small business owner is a challenging task, especially to a young professional, but dentistry felt natural and easy to Dr. Thorpe. Further, coming from a family of small business owners, she had some preparation for the business aspect of the profession. Dr. Thorpe would like to thank the community and salute all female business owners. It is steady challenge to juggle family and business. However, the rewards are definitely worth it. We have reached levels that would make our mothers and grandmothers extremely proud. As a community, we will continue to support our children to pursue their dreams to further expand opportunities for them.

THOMA DOEHRING
MLA, Anmore, Belcarra, Port Moody and Coquitlam
Funny things happen when your family owns and operates a business for 24 years. Your kids have run amuck in the store, worked in the store and then moved on from the store. Thoma’s teenagers have now grown up and moved on and as she watched her kids grow she also watched the community grow. Customers come in and tell us “my Parents came here for their paint”. Others reminisce about how Thoma came into their home and chose colours for their room when they were teenagers. They are now inviting Thoma into their first place to help them with their decorating needs. Thoma’s business started out as ‘just’ a paint store. But with your continued patronage and support, the business has expanded to serve all of your decorating needs. It’s really your families, not just ours, carrying on the tradition. We invite you to come in to Tri-City Paint and Design, your local Benjamin Moore store in Port Coquitlam and meet Thoma and her team of experts.
It is my honour to represent and serve the citizens I have in my constituency. I am particularly pleased to celebrate my female colleagues in business, all of whom make substantial contributions to our community. Best wishes for International Women’s Day, March 8th. Thank you for all that you do.

“Since January 2015 Little Gypsy’s Fine Jewelry, Gifts & Gallery has been home to the work of over 30 local B.C artists, featuring beautiful jewelry, pottery and ceramics, glassware, stone and wood carvings, custom knives, art cards and more.
H E R E
If you’re looking for custom jewelry design, repairs including bead stringing and pearl knotting, as well as shelf after shelf of beautiful, one-of-a-kind ready made jewelry, you’ll find it at Little Gypsy’s. Tucked into this tiny, freestanding heritage building is also an everexpanding selection of metaphysical tools, stones and crystals.
Owner, Lydia Podobnik can be reached at the gallery six days a week, and is often found on the porch chatting with customers as they leave the shop, because as far as she is concerned, the conversation doesn’t end once the sale is complete. Come on in, but with so much to see in such a tiny space, plan to stay a while!”

SONIA & SAVITA (MUM) TUGNAIT
GILLIAN KIRK CHAIR, TRI-CITIES CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Savita Tugnait & Sonia Tugnait a mother-daughter duo have opened up their restaurant in Port Coquitlam.
As the daughter of a strong feminist who marched in the women’s movement and who was a founding member of the Poco Women’s Centre in the ‘70s, it is my pleasure to celebrate International Women’s Day with our community.
Savita came to Canada in 1986 and started her journey not knowing much about the Canadian culture. As time passed she adapted. Savita opened her first indian restaurant on the Vancouver Island in Nanaimo which gained popularity & got 4.5 stars in the Times Colonist Newspaper. After the success of her first location, her daughter Sonia motivated her mother to open other locations of the family owned restaurant to other locations. The mother daughter duo opened their second location in Parksville & the third in Victoria. The mother-daughter were keen on introducing Amrikkos on the lower mainland & opened up in Port Coquitlam

This past year has been a significant one for me, both personally and professionally. I have experienced my highest highs and my lowest lows and in the end I have realized how resilient I am. I am truly humbled at the support we have at Hair We Are Beauty Boutique for us to be celebrating 7 years in business. I feel very blessed to get to wake up every day and live my vision by doing what I am passionate about, surrounded by an amazing team and circle of support. My profession allows me to build trusting personal connections with my clients while also connecting them with the community. The conversations behind my chair are not just about hair, they are often profound, informative and I get to learn and share about what really matters. Connection is a necessity in every aspect of my life and I believe that it is a tremendous part of my success. I have done a lot of personal development, which has really catapulted me into a higher level of awareness. I have been able to do things that I never believed were possible and I have been able to hold my own when people have doubted my ability or commitment. I pride myself on the fact that I positively impact lives and have the ability to help others find their passions in contribution. I live by inspiring others to fly. I continue to be an Ambassador with our Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce and will be stepping into my second year as Community Director for The Rotary Club of Coquitlam Sunrise. I am so grateful to have received the Award for Community Spirit at this years Business Excellence Gala as well as Rookie of the Year with Coquitlam Sunrise Rotary.
