Key victory for Old Town Club pro

harles Frost, the head pro at Old Town Club in Winston Salem, won the 2017 Carolinas PGA Professional Championship – a victory that will earn him a spot a PGA Tour event in North Carolina next year. The 41-year-old Frost shot rounds of 69, 74 and 70 – a 3-under total -- at Trump National Golf Club in Mooresville to emerge victorious with a $9,000 check and two much more important added perks. The win earned Frost a spot in the 50th PGA Professional Championship to be held June 17-20, 2018 at Bayonet Black Horse in Seaside, Calif. That championship field includes 312 of the best PGA Professional players from across the country who will be attempting to finish in the top 20 and earn a bid to the 100th PGA Championship. Additionally Frost, as the CPGA professional champion, will get his choice of an exemption into the PGA Tour’s Wells Fargo or Wyndham Championship. Interestingly, it is very likely that

Linville: A humble instructor with humongous results

obert Linville has had a student qualify for the finals of the prestigious U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship three of the past four years. The tournament, commonly referred to as “the Mid-Am,” is the leading annual golf tournament in the United States for post-college amateur golfers. It’s organized by the USGA. High Point’s Scott Harvey, who won the Mid-Am in 2014 at Saucon Valley in Bethlehem, Pa., and finished second in 2016, has worked with Linville, the owner of Greensboro’s Precision Golf School & Tennis Academy, for about seven years. Kernersville’s Josh Nichols, who was runner-up in the 2017 Mid-Am played in October at the Capital City Club’s Crabapple Course in Milton, Ga., has been under Linville’s tutelage a little more than a year. But ask Linville about the role he’s played in the accomplishments of Harvey and Nichols and the best he’ll deliver is an unassuming shrug. “I take pride when the hard work they’ve put into the game is rewarded, but they deserve the credit, not me,” Linville said. “They’re both great players. I’ve just helped them as much as I can.” Harvey, 39, a veteran golfer who, in addition to his accomplishments in the Mid-Am, qualified for and participated in this year’s U.S. Open and played on the 2015 U.S. Walker Cup team, said it’s typical of Linville to downplay his role in the successes of his students.

“Robert’s a very humble guy,” Harvey said. “He’s not one to boast about his accomplishments.” But Harvey, who makes his living as a property manager, said Linville has played a great role in helping him improve his game. He admitted that when he started working with Linville, he was already a pretty

good golfer, vying for championships in many of the tournaments in which he competed. But for reasons Harvey couldn’t begin to comprehend -- in the middle of a number of those events -he’d be playing well when he’d unexpectedly hit a bad drive. It wasn’t unusual for another to follow. “There were times when those two bad shots would really hold me back,” Harvey said. Upon the recommendation of several of his golfing friends, Harvey sought the advice of Linville. He said Linville began working with him and studying his swing, determining what he was doing right and, more importantly, wrong. “He explained why I had misses and why it happened,” Harvey said. “I never knew before. He explained so much to me.” Harvey said one of Linville’s strong suits is his determination to change with the times, to keep up with the latest in golfing technology. He said it’s not unusual for Linville to come to him and say, “I just learned about this. Let’s give it a try.” “He’s not a teacher who thinks you’ve got to keep doing things a certain way because that’s how they’ve always been done,” Harvey said. Despite the number of years that have passed since Harvey began seeking instruction from Linville, the two still work together on a regular basis. Meanwhile, Nichols, 26, has been playing tournament golf for the better part of 15 years and was at one time the No. 1 player on the golf team at Appalachian State. from Linville in August 2016, “My game was a mess.” “I can’t begin to tell you everything I was doing wrong,” Nichols said. “I’d sort of try to self-diagnose. I’d set up a camera and study my swing and try to correct my problems myself, but it wasn’t working.” He said selecting Linville to try to help him correct his golfing woes was an obvious choice. “I told him, ‘I want to work with you,’” Nichols said. “I’ve seen the players he teaches. No one says anything bad about Robert.” Nichols said Linville spent a fair amount of time working with him on the physical side of his game, telling him inconsistencies he saw in his swing that were contributing to his breakdowns. But he also worked with Nichols on the mental portion of the sport. “He helped me accept bad results, to not let it get the best of me when I made a bad shot,” Nichols said. “From where I started with Robert to making it to the finals of a national tournament like the Mid-Am, that’s unbelievable.” Nichols lost to Matt Parziale, a firefighter from Brockton, Mass., in the finals of this year’s Mid-Am. Nichols shot a very respectable 69 in the first round of the two-round match play final, but couldn’t keep pace with Parziale who fired a blistering 63. He went on to close out Nichols 8 and 6. Linville said he’s proud of the improvements Nichols has made to his game over the past 15 months. “It was incredible to see his transformation,” Linville said. “We set some goals for him and decided what he has to do to accomplish those goals.” Of his work with Harvey, Linville said the two have been associated with one another so long they’ve become good friends in addition to being instructor and student. “Some years we work together more than others,” Linville said. “When we started together and were making a lot of changes to Scott’s game, we worked a lot.” Linville said he founded Precision Golf 28 years ago and has long since lost track of the number of students he’s had. “Some got better,” he said, chuckling at the memories. “Some didn’t.”

Is Chang North Carolina’s greatest prep golfer ever? Athens Drive senior finishes 19-under in final three prep events

ennifer Chang chuckles when she looks back at her freshmen photos as a young teenage golfer at Athens Drive High School in Raleigh. “It’s hard to imagine that was me,” she said. At the time, Chang was a talented junior player, but few knew what a remarkable future awaited the 15-yearold. Four years have passed and Chang will soon be heading off to the West Coast for a college golf career at powerhouse Southern Cal after graduating early from high school. She leaves behind arguably the greatest feat in North Carolina prep sports history – winning four straight 4-A golf titles. Chang capped off her four-peat in dominating fashion in late October at Pinehurst No. 1, winning this year’s championship by seven shots. Her first-round 69 was the only sub-70 round in the field of 78 golfers. “In the back of my mind there was that thought that I was trying to win four straight, but I didn’t want to put myself in an uncomfortable situation, so I just treated it like any other tournament. I relaxed and did some homework,” Chang said of her overnight stay at Pine Needles Resort between rounds one and two. She woke up the next day and carded a 70 – three shots better than any other golfer that day – to finish at 5-under. Her goal of carding a birdie on her final high school hole didn’t come to pass, but it was an emotional setting as she approached the green, which was ringed with her competitors to help her celebrate a feat that will likely never be matched. “The most memorable thing of all of my wins was the last hole this year, seeing everyone I’ve played with since my freshmen year and all the new

players and seeing my team up there,” she said. “There was nobody around her at the end and I just walked up to her and said, ‘You are just overly impressive and everything you do moving forward is almost like icing on the cake,”’ said rival coach Greg Greksa, whose Cardinal Gibbons team captured the state title. Cardinal Gibbons captured its second state 4-A title in the last three years, beating out Pinecrest by seven shots after holding a five-shot lead after the first round. The victory was accomplished without the team’s No. 1 player – University of Virginia signee Riley Smyth – who sat out the season with a hip injury. Megan Kanaby led the way for the Crusaders, finishing at 5-over to tie for third place. Meanwhile, Reagan came in fourth behind Gibbons, Pinecrest and Athens Drive – 40 shots off the pace. Sasha Hayes tied for eighth with rounds of 78 and 77. Reagan had no other golfer in the top 25. “We tried some different things this year and felt the team was loose going into states but we did not perform up to the level I expected the first day, but Cardinal Gibbons and Pinecrest both had five players so we could not have an off player with only three girls,” said coach Jay Allred, who has won nine conference championships at the school in 11 years. “Sasha Hayes was paired with Jennifer Chang and had it to within one stroke after 10 but Jennifer hit the accelerator at that point. The second day, I thought we performed up to the level I expected and played very well. I always try to tell these girls don’t worry about what place you are finishing, just enjoy the experience.” Chang’s final three prep tournaments were truly remarkable – a combined 19 under par. She shot a state record-breaking 61 at the conference finals at Pine Hollow in Clayton, where the pace of play was so slow that she was able to read three chapters of homework on the back nine and still set the course record. That was followed by a 68 at the East Regional in New Bern, and then her fourth state crown in runaway fashion.

“In today’s junior golf environment and with it being so competitive it takes a very special person to accomplish what Jenny has accomplished,” said Ben Hynson, Chang’s golf instructor at Lochmere Golf Club in Cary. Hynson said a big part of Chang’s success has been a physical conditioning program she started last October and the addition of a mental coach to her team. “Those things have made her a more complete player,” he said. Chang has won her state titles in varying fashion – as a young, innocent freshman in 2014, coming from three shots back in horrible weather conditions in 2015, by the narrow margin of one shot in 2016, and then this year’s romp. “My mental game has contributed a huge part, that’s that part that really drove me to shoot what I can and be capable of shooting what I can,” Chang added. “Just being able to overcome the negative thoughts and kind of set myself into neutral because it’s hard for a golfer to go from a negative to a positive, so try to keep it in neutral.” Chang said she is more excited than nervous to head to Southern Cal. “It’s a new chapter in my life. I know high school golf is totally different from college golf. There is more competition, people playing at your level so it’s definitely exciting.” Few have been able to play at Chang’s level so far. “It has been a lot of fun to watch her,” Greksa said. “She has proven to be a marquee player. I always say people don’t understand that golf is the most difficult sport there is, and for her to do what she did four years in absolutely amazing, it’s not really plausible.”

Joy, Rockingham County come away with 3-A hardware

By EDDIE SOUTHARDS ailey Joy overcame her nerves to win the 3-A state golf championship and lead Rockingham County to its third straight title. Joy, a senior, opened with the best round of the tournament, a 3-under 69, at Foxfire Resort & Golf Club. She struggled to a 76 in the final round for a 145 total but still won by three shots. “I was little disappointed in how I played, but I was really nervous,” Joy admitted. “So, I’m going to give myself a pass. I’ve only had the lead overnight a few times this summer, so I really haven’t gotten used to it. I was just trying keep it under control.” “The first round, I really didn’t set any expectations for myself scorewise. I just tried to play steady to give my team a good lead after the first day.” Chapel Hill’s Gina Kim, one of

the nation’s top junior players who is headed to Duke, did not compete in the high school tournament this year. Kim’s absence opened the door for a new champion this year. She had won the 3-A title two years in a row. Her coach, Ed Ibarguen, the director of golf at Duke University Golf Club, said Kim decided to take off the high school season because of the busy summer schedule she played. She competed in AJGA tournaments, the Junior Ryder Cup and even qualified for an LPGA tournament. “Her summer schedule was insane,” he said. “Coming into the high school season, she was tired. Her parents and I discussed if she was going to be able to do her school work and still play golf. We and Gina decided she should not play high school golf.” Joy had a four-shot lead after the first round and was firmly in control after shooting 1-under on the front nine in Day 2. But her nervousness

began to show as she shot 41 on the back nine, including a double bogey on the last hole. The second round was played under lift, clean and place conditions after heavy overnight rain. Joy, who has committed to play golf at UNC Greensboro next year, still finished three strokes ahead of Kayla Smith of Burlington Williams and Katharina Floyd of Pittsboro Northwood, who tied for second for the second straight year. They both shot 148. “I’ve always watched some really good girls win the state and to be a part of that group now means a lot to me,” Joy said. Rockingham County coach Mike Williams said of Joy’s round of 69, “That was amazing. She had a 3-putt so

Olivia John, who won the East Central Regional tournament with a 68, shot 78-74 for 152, and sophomore Victoria Cook shot 80-78 for 150 to account for the winning team score of 455. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This proves that hard work and determination will pay off,â&#x20AC;? Williams said of his teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s title run. The Cougars shot 227 in the first round to open a 22-shot lead over Northern Guilford. Joy said the team was afraid something might go wrong overnight. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were all scared somebody was going to get disqualified or stuck in an elevator,â&#x20AC;? she laughed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was afraid I was going to get food poisoning.â&#x20AC;? But no calamity befell the Cougars and they continued to pour it on in the second round, outscoring Northern Guilford 228 to 242, for a 36-shot win. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am glad I can end my senior year with a third one,â&#x20AC;? said John, who will play golf at Western Carolina next year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had a 22-stroke lead and that gave us confidence to relax.â&#x20AC;? Joy said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Three straight team titles is a memory I will not forget.â&#x20AC;? Cook, a sophomore, will become the team leader next year when the Cougars try to win their fourth straight title. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be good next year, still strong like we are now,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Being the leader next year, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to feel really different.â&#x20AC;? Williams is optimistic the team can keep its winning streak going. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re losing two seniors, but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll still be pretty good next year,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got a couple of good freshmen coming in, so we should be competitive. Winning kind of breeds winning. The girls at the middle school are excited about it. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all going to get lessons now.â&#x20AC;? Smith shot 75-73 to finish three shots behind Joy. Smith was six behind after the first round and was still in contention after a 1-under 35 on the front nine the second day. But she was derailed by a double bogey on the par-4 11th hole. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hitting the ball as well as I wanted to but I ended up managing pretty well,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I hit a wall for a little bit but then I tried to get back in my swing, found the rhythm and started functioning better.â&#x20AC;?

Smith, a junior, was part of a Burlington Williams team that finished second 25 shots behind Rockingham County last year. But the Bulldogs didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make it to the state tournament this year. First-year coach Caroline Crow said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kayla wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t particularly challenged in the county or the conference but stayed motivated by competing against herself and trying to improve her score every week. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s her own motivator, her own competitor.â&#x20AC;? For Northern Guilford, it was another runner-up finish behind the Cougars. The Nighthawks finished second in the conference and at the East Central Regional behind Rockingham County. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rockingham is just a tough team to beat,â&#x20AC;? Nighthawks coach Ted Bonham said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We would have had to really pull off a miracle and they would have had to had a really bad day for us to beat them.â&#x20AC;? Victoria Ladd led the Nighthawks with rounds of 77-75 for a 152 total. She tied for fourth place in the state in the individual standings. Siana Wong shot 82-83 for 165 and Anna Hillman had 91-84 for 175 to complete the team scoring at 491. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ladd has been getting better every year,â&#x20AC;? Bonham said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worked very hard on her game. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s turned the corner on it. She knows how to play and can get on the course and separate playing golf from playing golf swing. She knows when she doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have her best day, how to get it in the hole. Mentally, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s probably one of the strongest players that I have ever coached.â&#x20AC;? Ladd, a junior, returns along with Wong and Cami Rivas, who shot 190 at the state tournament. The nucleus gives Bonham hope the Nighthawks might be able to end Rockingham Countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s streak next year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Northern is a great team,â&#x20AC;? Williams said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I mean, they pushed us all year long and made us better.â&#x20AC;? But first, Williams is celebrating another title after winning the first one in 2015 by five shots over Lee County. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m so happy for the kids and for Hailey, too,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Olivia won the regional championship. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been solid all year long. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a great accomplishment. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m proud to be their coach. They have good attitudes and all of them are exemplary students. I just feel like Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m the luckiest coach in the world.â&#x20AC;?

Mount Airy team, Forbush’s Fobes finish as state 1A-2A runner-ups

n 1999, Mount Airy High School approached cafeteria manager Tommye Phillips with the idea of taking over the women’s golf program. “They knew I was a golfer and they needed someone to go with the girls and play, and 20 years ago I was enthusiastic,” chuckles the 58-year-old coach, who in late October lead the Granite Bears to a second-place team finish in the 1A-2A state championships – the school’s best ever. Phillips has guided Mount Airy to three straight conference titles, and hopes she can wind down her twodecade coaching career in style over the next few seasons. “I talk about retiring every year. It has gotten way above me, there is so much to learn now,” Phillips says. “The game has changed so much. I’m just a country golfer and the girls are high tech. I’m about to age out I think; I’m a dinosaur.” Mount Airy used a third-place finish in the 1A/2A Central Regional as motivation once getting to Longleaf in Southern Pines, Phillips said. Once again, it was junior Alyssa Cox leading the way with her third straight top 10 finish at states. Cox tied for seventh place after finishing fifth in 2016 and tied for ninth in 2015. Fielding a women’s golf team at the 1A-2A level can often be a challenge, with few players to pick from.

Phillips faces the same road blocks at Mount Airy. “Our membership at high school is 527 and we play the same time volleyball and tennis plays and that really hurts us. We’ve had girls who wanted to play golf that play those other sports, so we have a small pool to draw from,” she said. “But the atmosphere of golf around Mount Airy is good, and the caliber of girls we have now is so much better. And they want to win: they are very competitive girls now, very competitive.” Much like Cox, Forbush junior Mallory Fobes has made her mark over the last three years during the state championships. Fobes, headed to

UNC-Wilmington after next season, finished second this time around after shooting rounds of 78 and 76. Fobes tied for 16th in 2015 and fourth in 2016. Fobes played in the threesome with eventual winner Katherine Schuster of First Flight in Kill Devil Hills, who ran away from the field with rounds of 70 and 74, beating Fobes by 10 shots. “The first nine I hung with her, but then she just starting getting more and more birdies,” Fobes said of Schuster. “I didn’t know much about (Schuster) going in and we felt it would be a bit of an advantage playing with her because Mallory is usually so much longer than all the other girls she plays against, but that wasn’t the case,” said Forbush coach Matt Pruitt. “She outdrove us about half the time, so it was a little different for Mallory.” Pruitt, who also coaches the men’s golf team at Forbush, says Fobes is still deciding whether to tee it up with the males for her senior season in 2018. “She has always been long and really good off the tee, but I think Mallory’s short game has really improved,” Pruitt said. “She is just maturing as a golfer and I don’t really have to say much to her any more on the golf course. She understands what to do and where to be on certain holes.”

By STEVE WILLIAMS year and a day later, Mike Weill was at it again at Mill Creek Golf Club. It was on Oct. 31, 2016, when he accomplished the extremely rare feat of two holes-in-one in the same round. This time, on Nov. 1, it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite as spectacular as he stopped after making just one. Weill, a 72-year old Mebane resident, now has six career aces. The perfect shots last year were on Mill Creekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eighth and 13th holes. This year, his ace came with a 6-hybrid on the 142-yard fourth hole with Pete Delario, Steve Forsyth and Bill Hensley in his foursome. That leaves him with only the 17th on his home course to conquer -- maybe next year. There were a bunch of other great shots reported to Triad Golf Today since last issue, including:

A tough year spells goodbye

his has been a tough year, Bets. We’ve lost Arnold Palmer, a national treasure that golf will never be able to replace. My career in journalism goes far enough back that I actually covered some of the tournaments in which Arnold played. He was pure magic on the golf course or in the media room. There is no way Palmer will ever be forgotten, but the game goes on. Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson and a dozen other players give the game plenty of excitement. It’s not quite the Arnie magic but there is drama and excitement every week. I predict that some player will win two majors in the 2018 season. Winning all four majors is just a pipe dream. There are simply too many great players for one to dominate in that manner. I’d love to see it happen but it ain’t going to. It’s amazing how many really good golfers are on the Tour now. You can pick a dozen players each week who are capable of winning and you probably still wouldn’t pick the winner. Spieth, Thomas and Johnson are remi-

I would say that is good company. My personal sojourn into the published word is entirely your fault. I will never be able to thank you enough.
