lder, wiser and admittedly with a few more grey hairs, Mark Brazil heads into his 20th year as tournament director of the Wyndham Championship. Regarded as one of the best at what he does on the PGA Tour, Brazil is optimistic that the Triad signature sporting event held outdoors can return to “normal” following a challenging 2020 tournament staged with no fans and scaled down hospitality opportunities because of COVID-19. With as many as 10,000 fans attending PGA Tour events in states such as Arizona and Florida over the last month, Brazil believes it’s a sign that a significant amount of fans across North Carolina will be able to watch some of the best golfers in the world in person later this summer at Sedgefield Country Club. “I’m feeling bullish about August and what we’re trying to do,” Brazil said of the Wyndham Championship to be staged Aug. 12-15. “We’re certainly planning on at least 12,000 fans, and I would say that’s a conservative number. It could be 15,000 but we’ll be working with the PGA Tour and the state of North Carolina on that. With all the vaccines and the herd immunity -- and if we’re able to avoid some of these virus strains -- the fact that we have an outside element to tour events is really important. Being inside in a crowd I still don’t think that is going to be any good in August, so being

Wyndham Championship banking on normalcy in 2021 outside is a really big part of this. You will see a lot of open-air hospitality units for fans. Those are the things we’re talking about every day.” Brazil stressed the importance of the PGA Tour, sponsors and private donors helping his team survive a lean year without spectators and various hospitality revenue sources. “Hats off to the PGA Tour, they took a (financial) hit last year, but they have been saving for this type of rainy day and they showed to be incredible partners to all of us,” Brazil said. “We kind of got through it. It was almost like a perfect storm in a negative way for us at the Wyndham Championship because we had just put down a lot of money with a new operations building, and then we build a new short-game area, too. We would have had no problem with a few normal years paying all that off and then this thing hits.” Brazil said interest in professional golf remained high because of TV exposure during the pandemic. “How great was that during the middle of this pandemic that we were able to watch golf, even if there were no fans,” he said. “We still got to watch the competition, golf at the highest level – we saw a Masters, a PGA Championship and a U.S. Open. The PGA Tour was so very appreciate of every tournament that agreed to have one because that meant that golf was going to be on TV and the PGA Tour product was strong. That part of it was good. The hospitality and pro-

Mark Brazil am end of it was tough though.” Brazil chuckled when asked about how “normal” things will look at the Wyndham Championship this summer.

“People still running around with masks on in August in North Carolina – there is not much normalcy in that,” he said. “But I think we’re going to take a major step toward normalcy in August. A lot of tournament directors I talk to they look at me and say ‘you are kind of lucky having a tournament so late’ and we were also kind of lucky we had one so late last year. “We always talk about the right of spring when Augusta comes around, well it almost feels like we’re gaining on a right to have a little fun, and having some fun at a PGA Tour event in August will be great,” added Brazil. “I will certainly be out there at the Wells Fargo Championship in May in Charlotte, and hopefully seeing 10,000 or 12,000 fans. I know they are ready and we’ll be ready. I think optimism is in the air right now.”

Another Ross renovation under way in North Carolina Sandhills By David Droschak

ith no new golf course construction across North Carolina since 2016, those of us who like “fresh experiences” have been relegated to playing restorations, renovations or the re-imagining of some of the state’s top layouts in recent years, including Tanglewood, Raleigh Country Club, Jefferson Landing and Pine Needles Resort. The latest project of note was announced early last year and is now under way at the Southern Pines Golf Club, a Donald Ross design that was operational as an 18-hole course starting in 1923. The Elks Club had owned the golf course for seven decades before it was purchased in 2020 by the Pine Needles/Mid Pines management firm run by company president Kelly Miller. Miller had tapped rising architectural star Kyle Franz to renovate Mid Pines and Pine Needles – also both classic Ross layouts two miles away as the crow flies – within the past decade before hiring him a third time to tackle the Southern Pines project. Franz recently completed a remarkable remake of Raleigh County Club – the final design of Ross -- and then quickly pivoted south to the Sandhills, where he began work at the Southern Pines Golf Club in mid December. Miller and Franz wanted some immediate buzz, so Franz began applying his touches on holes 1, 2, 17 and 18 to give those arriving at the course a dramatic first impression. “We wanted to dial in this section of the golf course right out of the gate, to sort of get some marketing caliber photos through this section of the property,” Franz said. “It is stunningly good; it has exceeded my expectations,” added Miller. “I wanted to start out with new holes close to the clubhouse to let people see it, and then we’ll kind of work our way back into the golf course.” Franz noted that Ross had a particular style during the late teens and early 1920s that included large, sweeping bunkers and waste areas crossing fairways that he called “jumps” to add challenge, shot value and risk-reward opportunities for every level of golfer. He also placed “islands” in bunkers. “His work during that time period was a little wilder, a little more rambunctious,” Franz said. “He was very aggressive with the overall concepts of the holes. Ross had more jumps between shots, not severe things like the ninth hole on Pinehurst Course No. 4, but www.triadgolf.com

sandy, hard-pan areas that break up the holes a little bit to make things a little more spicy. That’s really the style I have wanted to do here for 10 years. If you look at a map of all the Pinehurst courses in 1918 half of the holes would have these sandy carries. I’m not going to do that many because I don’t want to scare everybody away, but by 1923 Ross had anywhere between 3-6 of them on a golf course and that’s kind of what I’m centering in on here.” The bunkering will be dramatic right from the first tee, where Franz has restored a series of large bunkers down the right side of the fairway, added a sandy waste area on the left, along with additional sand near the green. It’s a dramatic opening downhill hole, while the closing hole that runs parallel to the first hole will see a large false front added to the green and massive cascading bunkers. “I’ve always said restoration architecture is part archeology and part architecture,” Franz said. “You try to put yourself in the position of someone like Donald Ross as best you can and try to figure out what he was trying to accomplish. A

prime example is here. We do the best we can to plan it out, but a lot of it is we find our way and back into it. Look at No. 1, these two bunkers on the right were missing off the tee as were the bunkers behind them down by the green Now, from the tee box it looks really, really narrow, it looks like there is almost no fairway out there, but the fairway is actually 70 yards wide in the middle. That’s what Ross was trying to accomplish, that’s why he put those bunkers there and the next set of bunkers where he did. It’s visual intimidation off the tee when in reality it’s a really gentle space down there.” The course will be closed at some point this summer, likely in June or July, to redo the greens, with an expected completion date of Sept. 1. In addition to the added bunkering, new greens and colorful native grasses throughout the course, golfers will experience a more open layout with a robust amount of trees removed across the property. “It has basically had 100 years of nothing being done in terms of trees so with any course it will grow over,” Miller

said. “Now it will be pretty cool to see through some of the areas.” Some length will also be added, with the most noticeable coming early in your round at the second, where the back tees will play 75 yards longer than its present layout. With the touches of Franz, Southern Pines Golf Club is setting up as a premium course in the Sandhills after being sort of an afterthought to some to the more prestigious and publicized courses across the Home of American Golf. Miller says he’s still working through a pricing structure in his mind. “Southern Pines has always been an affordable golf course. That always rings in my ears so I do want to keep it affordable, but more so for the locals than somebody coming from outside the area,” Miller said. “With purchasing it and then investing significantly in it with the renovation the rates are going to have to go up. But maybe not unlike the Old Course in Scotland in that it’s affordable if you live right there and not so much if you don’t to where you’ll be paying 300 pounds. I’m looking at that model.”

Opportunity Knocks Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Tour has successfully opened doors for female junior golfers for 15 years

mily Brooks recalls her first Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Tour event at Bermuda Run more than a decade ago as a tournament that was played in sloppy, wet conditions as her scores ballooned to well over par. As a middle school student, Brooks admits she was more interested in soccer at the time than her golf scorecard, but an unexpected side benefit hooked her into a sport that has consumed her life since. Paired that day with Lily Yatawara, the two became – and remain -- friends to this day, and Brooks’ cell phone contacts are dominated by girls who she played with or against on the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Tour (PKBGT), a Greensboro-based junior circuit celebrating 15 years of providing opportunity for young girls to play competitive golf on a level playing field. 10

With her only outlet at the time local club tournaments, Brooks says the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Tour gave her a golf game a purpose. “I think if I had a negative experience in that first event who knows where I would be now,” Brooks said. “It was just so positive. Getting into tournament golf really made me more serious about golf, which allowed me to play college golf, and to be honest with you now golf is ingrained into every part of my life.” Brooks, who lives in Rhode Island and is the social media lead for golf ball giant Titleist, was part of the early days of the PKBGT, which began with just 61 girls in 2007 and now serves more than 1,000 junior female golfers representing 34 states and Canada. It’s not unusual for players from as far away as California to make the trip east to North Carolina to compete on the developmental circuit and be seen by college coaches from the Atlantic Coast Conference

and Southeastern Conference. The PKBGT, along with the Carolinas Golf Association, offers junior female golfers in North Carolina and South Carolina a tremendous opportunity to shine on an affordable stage that won’t break the bank of mom and dad. AJGA national events can be costly and time consuming, while the PKBGT average price for a regional level, one-day tournament ranges from $35 to $65, with multi-day events ranging from $149 to $200. “One thing we’re proud of is our pricing is still under where the traditional for-profit tours are,” said longtime PKBGT director Mike Parker, who has been along for the ride since the start. “We aim for affordability. It is one of our core statements.” Hand-in-hand with affordability has been opportunity, which is provided on a number of fronts by generous private and sponsor donations, along with grants from such entities

as the LPGA and USGA. In January, the PKBGT was award a $20,000 grant from the LPGA*USGA Girls Golf program, which Parker says goes to help fund an annual PKBGT scholarship and tournament operating expenses, along with underwriting the costs for access when needed. “Our goal is to not turn away any girl who shows an interest and wants to play in a tournament,” Parker said. “It all comes back to our core mission and why the non-profit Triad Youth Golf Foundation, now branded as Girls Golf of America, was started. The goal was to create these opportunities for the girls to pursue golf in whatever direction they choose and to give them a larger platform to compete and be recognized.” Laura Diaz, director of operations for the LPGA Foundation, believes the PKBGT separates itself from other Continued on page 11 www.triadgolf.com

Opportunity from page 10 junior golf circuits by emphasizing the importance of the developmental aspect of the game as well as the competitive facet. “They want to make sure the girls can ease their way into the competitive stage,” Diaz said. “Sometimes newer golfers want to start playing tournaments but may get into a tournament that is too strong and get discouraged and not want to come back. But the PKB Tour has the appropriate age and skill levels for all the different girls, which is just great. There is a pathway that they create for all the girls to be able to achieve their competitive level, sort of meeting them where they are skill-wise, which is so very important.” Brooks says she played “too many to remember” PKBGT tournaments before heading to play college golf at Elon, while Yatawara also remained in North Carolina and took her skills to Appalachian State. “It definitely teaches you grit,” Brooks said of the PKBGT. “It’s not just a fluffy girls tour where you go and sign up and you get a pink bow, you go play and then go home. It’s competitive, and you are playing good set-ups and in tough conditions. It’s good preparation for sure.” Parker continues to branch out his PKBGT operation, with more than 130 tournaments in seven different regional series across 10 states. “It is just constant organic growth outward that we’ve been able to have, and from our foundation’s perspective we’ve just tried to meet those demands the best we can with the resources we have,” said Parker, noting that new states include Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. “The dream was always there (to grow the tour). It started as a mission to solve a problem of junior girls access to golf -- and we were very committed to that -- but as we got into it we realized the problem existed in so many places, it wasn’t just in the Carolinas. “The CGA has always done a wonderful job, they were ahead of the curve and still are as far as providing equitable access to girls on the tournament side, and yet we were still able to flourish because there was even more demand there,” Parker www.triadgolf.com

The girls are there. If you provide a product that is geared toward them, and engage them and show them there is a passion for their interest, they will turn out.’ That is what our growth has proven over these last 15 years.” Robert Linville, one of the tour’s founders and one of the most respected junior golf instructors in the Carolinas – gives much of the credit for the flourishing nature of the PKBGT to Parker, calling him the tour’s “driving force.” “He has been relentless on the mission of why we started it and to grow it, and to develop it to give these girls opportunities,” Linville said of Parker. “There was a huge need and the girls just getting the

opportunity to get somewhat of an equal playing platform to the boys was special to them – and still is to this day.” Brooks notes that the PKBGT doesn’t just talk the talk, but walks the walk when it comes to developing and drawing female juniors to the game. “There is a lot of chatter out there or really good initiatives to grow the game and wanting to get all these girls into the game, but at the end of the day you can introduce the game to as many people as you want but if there is no way to keep the people who are dedicated and really into it, then where are they going to go?,” Brooks said. “In the Carolinas, we’re so very blessed to have awesome organizations like the CGA and PKBGT to have opportunities. There are a lot of places in the country that don’t have that, and the only option for girls is to go play in a tournament where it’s a boys tournament with a

girls field tacked on to it, or go play an AJGA tournament and spend a lot of money traveling and most people can’t afford that. The PKBGT is really a great pipeline in North Carolina.” This past January in Southern Pines, the Linville Cup was once again staged to reward the top finishers of the PKBGT with a weekend of team golf and leadership seminars. The event, established in 2018, created additional lasting memories of past and present alumni of the tour. “Some of the girls who had gone on to professional golf came back to mentor the next generation,” Parker said. “So did some who are now in the business world to show the younger players they are still connected to the game. To see that lifelong connection that has been made, whether it was through their college path or otherwise, is a real proud moment, and I’m proud this foundation has been able to provide that kind of access.” TRIAD GOLF TODAY • APRIL 2021

Pinehurst Resort will also host a U.S. Open in 2024 and beyond, while Pine Needles in Southern Pines will stage the U.S. Women’s Open in 2022, not to mention the President’s Cup coming to Quail Hollow Club next year. “There is a ton of economic impact with golf,” said longtime Wyndham Championship tournament director Mark Brazil. “Our tournaments put North Carolina on the map in a number of ways, especially the two PGA Tour events, reaching 1.5 billion households. There are not that many events we have in the state of North Carolina that have that kind of reach worldwide.” In addition, North Carolina is home to one of the world’s iconic golf destination – Pinehurst Resort – and the United States Golf Association will be moving its second headquarters to the Sandhills soon. “The formation of a NC Golf Council is a tremendous opportunity for golf to tell its story,” said Chris Valauri, principal of the Valauri Group, LLC a lobbying/government relations firm based in Raleigh. “I like to say I stole this from former Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton, ‘that golf is in North Carolina’s DNA’ but it truly is. The NC Golf Council will give golf a permanent platform to talk about the sport and its importance to the state, its importance to the economy, and to community develop-

ment. This is a win-win-win.” Hardister notes that the seven NC Golf Council members would not be paid, with the $25,000 used to help offset administrative costs and travel for the council members. Once the NC Council is formed, additional promotional and marketing efforts would likely be added at various yet-to-be determined levels. If funding is approved for the NC Golf Council, Hardister said the panel of golf experts could be in place by this fall. In its present form, the NC Golf Council members would be appointed by the governor (3 spots), with the State House and the State Senate getting two appointments each. “The only opposition I would envision is that some people don’t think it’s necessary to create a governmental entity for this purpose,” Hardister said. “I am a free-market guy, and I’m in no means in favor of more government, but this is not adding any kind of bureaucracy -- this is North Carolina showing its commitment to the game of golf and its potential that it has, recognizing the extraordinary impact it currently has and then trying to put that spotlight on the game to take it to the next level.” “The NC Golf Council would be another tool in the tool box for North Carolina to promote golf as a destination, as an economic development engine and as a great place to live, play and retire –all of the above,” added Valauri.

Einstein on roll for High Point University

randon Einstein is making his mark in the High Point University record books. The redshirt sophomore from Clemmons claimed his second firstplace finish of the year when he tied for medalist in the Pinnacle Bank Intercollegiate at Palmetto Hall’s Arthur Hill Course in Hilton Head Island, S.C., to close out February. He had opened the 2021 schedBrandon Einstein ule with a win in a dual match with Gardner Webb in January, firing a 67 at Tanglewood’s Championship Course. The win at Hilton Head was achieved against a full field of 80 players representing 16 schools. There was no playoff after he birdied the final hole to tie Furman’s Keller Harper on the tightly-bunched leaderboard where the top 10 players were separated by six shots. Only four other golfers in HPU history have won multiple titles in the same season. Einstein followed up with a T-9 at the Linger Longer Invitational in midMarch, giving him four top-10s in six events this season. Einstein, who played his prep golf at Forsyth Country Day, was the Big South Conference Freshman of the Year after the 2018-19 campaign where he had a couple of runner-up finishes. The COVID-shortened 2019-20 season enabled to Einstein to redshirt, and he’s making the most of his the extra time. The Panthers have two more tournaments before heading into the Big South Tournament on April 18-20. As a freshman, Einstein tied for 11th in the conference championship.

Ladd, who played her prep golf at Northern Guilford, opened with a 71 and followed with 72 and 74. She closed with a birdie on the par-3 18th to get within two shots of tournament

champ Ragga Kristinsdottir of Eastern Kentucky. WCU finished third, 30 shots back of Eastern Kentucky in the 13-team event. A half-century of great shot-making By STEVE WILLIAMS

elvin Dodson and Bill Cassidy have been playing golf for more than five decades and collecting a lot of great memories – and aces – along the way. Dodson, an 82-year-old Sandy Ridge resident, scored his 13th career hole-inone March 9 at Hemlock Golf Club and Cassidy, a 77-year-old Greensboro resident, reached double digits with his 10th during a round at Deep Springs Country Club on Feb. 23. Dodson mostly plays at Hemlock, where he’s gone as low as 60 several times, but he also has multiple aces at Ponderosa (now Eagle Hills) and Riverview in Pine Hall. He doesn’t have the exact date, but he remembers making his first ace at Riverview some 50 years ago. He has also recorded aces at Tanglewood Park in a CGA event and at Old Mill Golf Club in southern Virginia. One of his aces was on a par-4 at Gordon Trent Golf Club. Winston-Salem tapped as one of America’s Best Cities for Golfers By BRAD KING

he on-line media outlet Coventry Direct recently named WinstonSalem one of its “Top 25 Cities for Golf” in the United States. The insurance-based website pulled some interesting data on America’s largest cities to determine which were best for golfers. They looked at factors such as hours of sunshine, days of precipitation annually, the number of golf courses and more. Winston-Salem was ranked No. 16 in the country, one spot behind Phoenix — nearby Scottsdale, Ariz., is No. 1 overall — and ahead of golf hotbeds such as Tucson, Ariz. (No. 17), Orlando (20) and Tampa (24). The Twin City was the only North Carolina city to make the Top 25 list.

“That (ranking) surprised me a little bit,” said Harold Kincaid, who has run Reynolds Park in Winston-Salem since 2008. “But, when you think about it, golf around this area is a bargain. And we’ve got a wide range.” Along with renowned private golf courses, such as Old Town Club, Forsyth Country Club and Maple Chase Golf & Country Club, Winston-Salem boasts an impressive array of public access layouts, including Reynolds Park, Winston Lake, Heather Hills and Wilshire Golf Club. “I don’t think of (Reynolds Park) as a ‘muni’ when you’ve got a famous designer like Perry Maxwell and Ellis Maples was involved later on,” Kincaid said. “Then, you’ve got Arnold Palmer (designed) courses, (Jack) Nicklaus designs, Hale Irwin at Meadowlands. So, we got a lot to offer around here. There are a lot of good

choices. All the golf courses here take pride in how well they maintain their golf courses. It’s just a good area around here to play.
