A rebranded Challenge set to re-open in early August

he Challenge Golf Club, closed since the spring while undergoing some significant changes, is scheduled to re-open to the public Aug. 5. The Graham course, built in 1996, has converted its greens from bent to Bermuda grass, and redefined its fairways, among other improvements under owner Richard Belton, a local businessman and golf enthusiast. The course also has a new logo, said general manager and director of golf Todd Smith, who took over here in January after a stint at Stoney Creek. “When somebody played here before we closed and when they come out here again we want them to see a noticeable difference -from the appearance of the entrance to how they are treated in the pro shop to their experience on the golf course,” Smith said. Smith refused to disclose how much money Belton, who also built and owns nearby Quaker Creek in Mebane, invested in the Challenge improvements, but called the renovation “substantial.” “It was real easy for us to do, we really had no choice,” Smith said when asked about having to close the course for three months. “There have been a lot of different owners but Richie is committed

to making this a fantastic golf course. We talked at the beginning of the year that this absolutely had to be done to bring us up to the level we need to be.” “We needed some kind of catalyst to turn things around,” added Smith. “The greens look fantastic and the fairways have a whole different cut to them; we added some character and reshaped them.” Smith said ongoing work will continue on the Challenge’s bunkers and railroad ties that add a unique touch to the layout. “We’ve had just a huge punch list that we’ve been knocking out all summer,” he said.”We’ve replaced the wall on No. 14, and the railroad ties on a bridge on No. 18.” Tees have also been leveled, additional yardage added on a few holes, and yardage markers added on cart paths and sprinkler heads on all holes. The greens on holes 4 and 10 have also been changed somewhat, Smith said. “We feel like the market in the Triad area is pretty good now,” Smith said. “And we feel like with the quality of the golf course we have now that we’re the best value in the area.”

Inaugural Junior Hickory Fall Classic set for early October

eth Lomison had a fulfilling junior career. Now, the 20-year-old from Pfafftown figures it’s time to start giving back to the game. Lomison, who works for the Tarheel Golf Foundation, is launching the inaugural Junior Hickory Fall Classic, where juniors can learn how to play with old hickory clubs of yesteryear in a competitive setting. The event is scheduled for Oct. 7 at Wolf Creek Golf Course for boys and girls ages 9-15. “This event is not modern golf; I want to teach youngsters a hands on way about the roots of golf,” Lomison said. “Golf has taught me so much. I want to share this with others. Hickory golf is for people of

all ages, young and old, good and not so good players. It is just good, old-fashion fun. There isn’t anything like this for youth out there right now. We want to introduce hickory golf to the next generation.” Lomison, an intern with the National Hickory Championship for four years, has been playing modern golf for eight years, and pre-1900 Hickory golf for the last seven years. He is the 2016 CGA Jimmy Anderson champion and the current Foxburg Hickory champion. Hickory clubs will be provided to those entering the 18-hole October tournament, with a cookout and awards for the top three male and female finishers. “With hickory clubs you have to be

fluid and precise, compared to today’s golf, which is a grip it and rip it game,” Lomison said. “Hickory is about having fun hitting the ball and playing the course. Back in the day they didn’t have pars. It was about hitting the best score and beating the course. Hickory golf is different for each player. For some it is about the history, or the feel of the clubs, for others it’s the camaraderie and friendships. “Wolf Creek is a nice course because it is a short, open course that makes it perfect for hickory golf. Harvick Pro-Am starts Wyndham week

NASCAR drivers relish the PGA Tour spotlight

olf and auto racing, at first glance, seem an unlikely pairing. Two sports that some don’t even consider to be sports, one involving taking your life in your own hands driving high rates of speed around a track; the other trying to use as few a swings as possible with a stick to hit a little ball resting stationary on the ground in front of you. In fact, their differences may be what bring the two sports together. Turns out there are a growing contingent of NASCAR drivers who are avid golfers off the track, using the “other” sport to relax from their often-stressful professional careers. One of the leaders of the pack is Charlotte resident Kevin Harvick, a veteran driver and the 2014 Cup Series champion. On Monday, Aug. 14, for the eighth consecutive year his Kevin Harvick Foundation jumpstarts Wyndham Championship week at Greensboro’s Sedgefield Country Club by hosting a Pro-Am, presented by Technology Concepts &

Design, Inc., and BB&T, to help underprivileged children. Harvick and his wife, DeLana, a native of Kernersville, started their foundation in 2010 after a NASCAR fan poll gave Harvick a zero on the humanitarian side. “It’s not that we weren’t doing anything,” Harvick said. “We did a ton of stuff with the Victory Junction camp and different charities, but we never publicized it. We’d donate money and do our thing — shut down the race shop and take the com-

pany up to the Victory Junction camp, have a field day with the kids. But we never did it publicly.” The mission of the Kevin Harvick Foundation is to support programs that positively enrich the lives of children throughout the country. In 2013, as part of a continuing effort to support athletics at Harvick’s alma mater, North High School in Bakersfield, Calif., his foundation presented the school's boy's and girl's golf teams with a donation of 21 sets of new golf clubs, golf bags, putters and team apparel.

Harvick said events such as the Monday Pro-Am during the Wyndham Championship week have helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for good causes from North Carolina to Northern California. “Mark Brazil, his wonderful team at the Wyndham Championship and Bill Johnson of Technology Concepts & Design go above and beyond to lend a helping hand for so many children in need,” Harvick said. “I have gotten to know several members of the golf community fairly well in recent years, and have been amazed by their generosity and overwhelming support. The Kevin Harvick Foundation couldn’t do the work we do without the generosity of groups such as this.” Since taking up golf about a

decade ago, Harvick has become so addicted that when the California native moved to Charlotte, he built a par-3 hole in his back yard that is a replica of Augusta National’s iconic No. 12 hole. Harvick said golf is therapeutic for him, “to go and do something totally different” from racing — which is why he can often be found in the early evenings hitting balls in the backyard with his 5-yearold son, Keelan. “I don’t know that I can 100 percent blame it on Keelan, but he was definitely part of the excuse to convince Mom that we needed to put the golf hole in the backyard,” said Harvick, who said he was inspired to replicate No. 12 after attending the Masters a few years back and later playing a round at Augusta National. So who is the best golfer among the NASCAR drivers? Well, if the results from the new “Golf Guys Tour” — made up of 16 NASCAR drivers, team members and broadcasters — are any indication, that would be Denny Hamlin, who also happens to be one of the sport’s leading drivers. Calling themselves “the most frustrated amateurs on tour,” The Golf Guys Tour boasts its own Twitter account (@ TheGolfGuysTour) and website (www.thegolfguystour.com), which sells merchandise, and posts results and photos. Hamlin won the tour last year and already has built a large lead in this season’s standings as well. “I’m the best golfer,” said Hamlin, a member at The Peninsula Club just north of Charlotte, where he plays to a 4.2 handicap. Hamlin estimates he plays as many as 90 rounds a year. When he’s not on the course or the track Hamlin has a fullsized golf simulator in his home. “As soon as I started racing, I started playing golf,” he said. “A lot of the crew guys would go play on their time off. Wyndham from page 6 other sports that I did growing up, so I took it up and went out for a few rounds. The next thing you know, I kind of got addicted to it. I enjoy the challenge. Hopefully I’ll play a lot more once I retire.” During racing season, Hamlin said he and other drivers regularly tee it up following Saturday practices. He competed in this year’s Diamond Resorts Invitational — featuring legendary PGA Tour Champions, LPGA stars and over 40 celebrities from the world of sports and entertainment competing for their own prize purse. Hamlin finished 29th out of 47 celebrities. He is renowned among his fellow competitors for his putting. One professional golfer’s caddie called Hamlin “possibly the best amateur putter” he had ever seen. Hamlin said one of his fondest golf memories was last year’s Wells Fargo Championship Pro-Am, where he and former FedEx CEO Mike Glenn teamed up with PGA Tour star Adam Scott to shoot 56 and win the event by two shots. “It was so crazy how well we played brother-in-law golf,” said

Jimmy Buffet Hamlin, who recently posted a video of himself practicing his short game on a plane. One of Hamlin’s best friends and frequent partners on the golf course is Bubba Watson. Hamlin even caddied for his fellow lefthander during the Masters Par-3 Contest in 2012; the year Watson won his first of two green jackets. Like Harvick, Hamlin has a foundation in his name and also hosts a pro-am. One of his foundation’s two biggest fundraising events of the year is the “The Denis, Denny & Mark’s Pro-Am Jam,” a golf and concert event held each October at Daniel’s Island in Charleston, S.C., cosponsored by Hamlin, Hootie & the Blowfish’s Mark Bryan and entrepreneur Denis Gallagher. Last year’s fifth annual event raised a Pro-Am Jam record amount of $270,000, bringing the five-year fundraising tally to $990,000.

“Being on the verge of $1 million raised in only five short years is a testament to the generosity of all that support and participate in the Pro-Am Jam and the organizations it benefits,” Hamlin said. Indeed, NASCAR driver David Ragan said despite what people might think, he sees a lot of similarities between his sport and golf. "Golf is one of the sports -- like

NASCAR -- that really hasn't changed in how it's played since its inception," Ragan said. “They stick with a lot of the same procedures that have been in place since day one. Technology might help drive the ball farther on the golf course, just like technology helps give us more horsepower to go faster, but the core basics of the sport are still very much the same as they were when they first started."

North Carolina place to be for PGA Tour golf in August State hosts PGA Championship, Wyndham in consecutive weeks

By DAVID DROSCHAK f you love golf and love the state of North Carolina, then you will love the month of August here. For the first time ever, North Carolina will host PGA Tour events in consecutive weeks with the PGA Championship set for Aug. 10-13 at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, followed the next week by the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro. Pinehurst Resort did host back-to-back majors in 2014 on Course No. 2 when the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open were staged, but the state has never hosted the best men’s players in the world two straight weekends with a combined $16.3 million up for grabs. “There will be millions and millions and millions of eyeballs on our state,” said Mark Brazil, the longtime tournament director of the Wyndham Championship. “I’m always excited for others to have an opportunity to understand what the people of Charlotte and North Carolina are all about,” added Quail Hollow Club president Johnny Harris, one of the most influential men in Tar Heel golfing circles. “When people come and meet us they really connect with us. When you bring in the best players in the world you are going to have people here

from Japan, New Zealand, China, other parts of the world, and you never really think about interacting with them in the Carolinas but that is going to happen. And put that together with the game we all love and it’s going to be a very positive atmosphere. Charlotte is one of those places that opens up its arms to guests, so we are excited about showing off our city and our state -- and also showing off this great golf course.” Under the direction of Harris, Quail Hollow, which was originally designed by George Cobb in 1961 and redesigned by Tom Fazio in 1997, has become one of the PGA tour’s top destinations outside of the majors while hosting the Wells Fargo Championship each May. This year, the Wells Fargo was moved to Eagle Point in Wilmington as Quail Hollow was closed for some major course renovations, again under the direction of the Fazio design team. The new changes to the course were staged under an ambitious time table. Construction began May 9, 2016 and the course reopened Aug. 6 – an 89-day turnaround. Over 80,000 man-hours were required to complete the project with 43 acres of sod installed and 200,000 pounds of earth moved. Three new holes – Nos. 1, 4 and 5 -- were built. Trees were also removed and a new greenside bunker added to the 9th, while No. 11 was lengthened by 34 yards. In addition, all 18 greens were resurfaced with Champion Ultradwarf

Bermudagrass, approach areas, tees and collars were re-sodded with ¼-inch-cut Tifgrand and bunkering was re-edged and freshened with new sand -- the same type used at Augusta National. Kerry Haigh, the PGA of America chief championships officer, laughs now when recalling the phone call from Harris saying he and Fazio wanted to come to West Palm Beach, Fla., to chat. “My recollection of Johnny’s visit is a little different than his,” Haigh said. “He sort of called up and said Tom Fazio and I want to come down and just visit and we have a couple of ideas. And I said, ‘Great, come on down, we would love to see you both.’ I was thinking maybe they wanted to tweak a bunker here or there. They came into our board room and laid out these plans on the table. Luckily we were sitting down. It was 16 months before the 99th PGA Championship and they wanted to totally rebuild three holes and change the green on No. 11. After I had a glass of water and breathed a little bit I said, ‘Are we serious here? Let’s talk about this. Can you really do this?’ “We had the trust in Johnny, Tom Fazio and the club to get this done,” Haigh added. “We went into a full-court press for 90 days. I’m not sure there is anywhere else we could have had that faith to commit to such changes to what was already a fantastic golf course, a course that the players really talk about positively. That’s one of the main reasons we choose to come here. Everything they do here they want to be the best – and that’s what major championship golf is about.” The last time the PGA Championship was staged in North Carolina was 1974 when Tanglewood Park in Clemmons saw Lee Trevino take home the Wanamaker Trophy. Wow, how things have changed in 43 years. Trevino held off Jack Nicklaus by one shot to win $45,000. Last year’s PGA championship winner – Jimmy Walker -- pocketed $1.8 million and more than

200,000 spectators are expected to walk Quail Hollow in 2017. In April, Walker revealed he had Lyme disease. He says he’s close to 80 percent now and hopes to be fully recovered by the time he tees it up at Quail Hollow. “I think the new holes are great,” Walker said. “The first hole has a beautiful look to it. It’s reminiscent of the original tee shot and it opens up nice down there to the right, and the green, you can see the entire green. I love being able to see kind of where you’re going. “All the new green complexes are very nice. They are not too tricky. They have got a lot of flat spots. They have got some movement in them but they have got flat spots where you like to put the pins and there’s plenty of room. It’s going to be fun playing with all Bermuda. It will be a completely different test.” Walker said joining the major championship fraternity has been something special. “I’ve enjoyed teeing off this year and having that said before I tee off. It just sounds cool,” he said. “You stand a little taller. And I got a really cool parking spot at my club now. It’s got that logo. That was a cool moment. I also got text messages from guys like, “Welcome to the club” and this and that; Jack Nicklaus hand-writing you notes, just super special stuff.” Quail Hollow, Harris and its membership are also standing tall, with the prestigious Presidents Cup also scheduled for the private Charlotte course in 2021. “It’s a huge deal, the PGA Championship in the state’s biggest city on such a great golf course,” Brazil said of the August golfing doubleheader. “And to follow up with the Wyndham in back-toback weeks will be golf here at the highest level. And personally, it will be a lot easier for me to do that last-minute recruiting of players for the Wyndham.” Harris may have summed it up best. “We look forward to hosting the world,” he said.

New management firm aims to help golfers re-discover Forest Oaks

fter 30 years hosting a highlysuccessful PGA Tour event, it’s safe to say Forest Oaks Country Club has spent the better part of the last decade trying to find itself after the tournament moved cross-town. There have been numerous management groups that have come and gone since 2007, and general manager Anthony Miller has been on site for most of the fiscal difficulties and mental strain. Miller, 42, grew up in Burlington and used to come to the Greensboro tour stop on a regular basis as a kid, and then returned in 2005 as an assistant golf pro. In June, Miller was introduced to yet another new boss, this time it’s OB Sports Golf Management, a firm based in Arizona and with a good reputation in the business for turning venues around. Few would argue that Forest Oaks, once a thriving private club in southeast Greensboro, needs some major TLC. For starters, the club’s pool had been closed with insufficient funds to open the gates, the ABC license was lost in the restaurant

and bar, and the tennis courts are, shall I say, in disrepair. And that’s not even mentioning the golf course, which is still suffering from winter kill from two years ago, poor equipment, crumbling cart paths and a shrinking maintenance budget. “I’ve got such a deep history here, a lot of close friends with members,” Miller said. “If it wouldn’t have been in my interest in seeing this place through I would have been gone a long time ago. But I just know it has such potential with its history, and with the right upper tier management overlooking things it can be a success. “It has been neglected,” added Miller. “People have come in looking for an initial return and they were not willing to put up what it needed to take to get it where it needs to be to be a successful business and thrive like it used to. You’ve got the community and the market is here, it just needs a little care and a little money put into it to get it back to the standards.” Designed by noted architect Ellis Maples, Forest Oaks opened in 1962 to rave reviews. It was already known as one of the best tests in North Carolina, when it

was rated as a favorite PGA Tour stop by players. As the golf course matured, alterations to the course were necessary, and in 2002 the job of restoring the course was assigned to Davis Love III’s Love Design Group. During this renovation, the fairways were re-sprigged with TifSport Bermudagrass, a strain that handles the extremes of summer heat and winter wetness better than the old local strains. As a result, the fairways are able to be cut lower and smoother than ever before. The greens were planted with a mix of A4 and A1 bentgrass, which offers a faster and truer surface than the old Penn Links variety. Fast forward to today, and after opening for limited public play in 2014, OB Sports Golf Management is moving fast to restore the luster to Forest Oaks. The pool has been re-opened, the liquor license has been granted to the club again, and work has started on aggressive fertilization and equipment upgrade plans. “That is a huge thing. We are working with nothing out there,” Miller said. “The challenge is to re-establish the operations in a way that the programming

is there for the membership and strengthen the value of the membership,” said OB Sports chief operating officer Phil Green, who toured Forest Oaks for several days in June. “We have already limited outside play and are only taking a limited number of reservations for non-member play so that the membership has priority and preference on starting times.” Forest Oaks is OB Sports Golf Management’s only course in North Carolina. Green said OB Sports got connected with Forest Oaks through a relationship with the Japanese ownership group, which also owns a club in Florida that OB manages. “The golf course is in pretty good shape, but there are just a lot of little things that will take it to the next level pretty quickly that we’ll focus on,” Green said. “We’ve got to re-establish things in the golf shop as far as merchandising programs, and the food and beverage areas -- the restaurant, the catering. We have already started down that path. We’re revising all the menus and re-doing all the programming for the banquets and

Geez, where do you stop?” However, Green said Forest Oaks isn’t so far in the woods that it can’t recover and become a vibrant private club yet again. “I don’t think it’s a matter of being difficult, it’s a matter of time and patience and execution on a regular basis,” Green said. “It’s just that it’s going to take some time to regain and re-establish the club to where people have confidence in it and the membership is happy with that we’re doing. We’re taking the right steps; we’ve already got the swimming pool open and we’ve got a game plan on the agronomy side. We need to address the practice facilities, the tennis facilities; that will come next. I guess it’s what we refer to as blocking and tackling, checking off the boxes as we get to them.” For now, there are no more GolfNow purchases available. “Our goal is to re-establish the private club side of it,” Green added. “It has kind of turned more into a semi-private club, and that was out of necessity to a certain extent, and it’s not like we’re going to shut the faucet off completely, but we’re going to focus on making it more of a private club like it has in the past.” As Miller sits in his wood-paneled office surrounding by PGA Tour memorabilia, he is yet again optimistic that the course he once dreamed of playing as a teen-ager can make him proud. “The one thing I will say about OB Sports versus the previous management companies is look at their history. They have been in this business since 1972 so they know the right tools and what it takes to make a property work,” Miller said. “We want to start reaching out to the entire Triad again,” he added. “We feel we have a product here that is marketable – 30 years having a PGA Tour event here – I don’t see a problem attracting people from even the RaleighDurham area or Winston-Salem and west. Summer Escape: Converted brickyard one of Western North Carolina’s pristine getaways

or a half-century, Etowah Valley Golf & Resort has provided quality play for more than a million rounds and lodging for tens of thousands for visitors. And as the 27-hole layout in Henderson County celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, there are current and future plans to ensure those numbers of golfers playing and staying continue to grow at one of Western North Carolina’s most popular places to tee it up. Converted from a brickyard, Etowah Valley opened on July 8, 1967, 18 holes built by esteemed architect Edmund Ault. The original layout has remained virtually intact, South and West nines that feature a traditional look and style in the design of courses much older. Long, straight or slightly dogleg, treelined par-4s and par-5s dominate the terrain once used for brick mining, land long ago stripped of tons of clay that formed the famous Etowah Brick. Most par-4s on the original 18 demand not only a solid shot off the tee but often mid-irons or more into large greens, a challenge for many players who tire of the driver-wedge game of a lot of courses. Ault added nine holes in 1988, and the North nine is quite a departure from the South and West courses. A more open look with three reachable par-5s and a pair of par-3s that play less than 150 yards, the North also features three short par-4s that offers a chance to score more easily than the original 18. At the height of its summer season, Etowah Valley was in excellent condition during a recent visit, all 27 holes inviting and ready. If one plays the West Course first, the initial tee shot is an introduction to Etowah Valley and its stout test. The first hole is a straightaway par-4 of 431 yards, and even a long, straight tee shot leaves a lengthy approach that must clear a pond short and left of the green to a long and wide putting surface accustomed to receiving long irons and even hybrids and fairway woods. The 455-yard par-5 6th hole is the best chance for birdie, where a good drive around the corner of the dogleg right 14

can leave an iron approach to a slightly elevated green. The par-5 9th hole goes downhill and the tee ball must avoid small bodies of water left and right, setting up an uphill second shot to another wide, long green with multiple pin positions available. The signature hole is the fourth on the South side. A long pond of more than 200 yards sits down the right side of the par-4, forcing all but the longest of hitters to lay up on a narrow fairway left of the water, leaving a long approach to a flat green protected by sand left and right. The birdie chances on the North side begin on the short par-3 1st hole and ends with a classic risk/reward par-5 9th hole, where the second shot must be flown over a pond that protects a long, left-to-right green that is very narrow from front to back over the water. Rick Merrick, the head pro at the course, has been at Etowah for 26 years. He said many first-time visitors are surprised at the variety of the holes. “Most people think when they come to the mountains, they are going to play a real hilly course,” he said. “But we are in a valley. Our South nine is relatively flat… the West nine is kind of rolling hills, a little wider and a little bit longer. Then the North nine is a little shorter, with smaller greens and a totally different look.” And the non-golf time at Etowah

Valley offers plenty of choices. There are 65 lodge rooms and three restaurants on site, with a heated swimming pool and tennis. A 200-seat banquet facility and 200seat outdoor pavilion are available for parties and post-round tournament gatherings, and a short drive away is the quaint small-town atmosphere of Hendersonville, the county seat renowned for its dining and pub offerings. Frank Todd and his wife Betty Anne built Etowah Valley from the vision of Betty Anne’s father Bruce Drysdale, who owned the brickyard business. The Todd family owned and operated the golf course until 2013 and established a solid reputation as a top stay-and-play resort over the decades. The current ownership group of 14 partners took over in 2014 and is headed by local businessmen Dewey Andrew, Darrell Redmond and Tim Rice, who serves as general manager. Under leadership that invested nearly $2 million, the course has added a new fleet of golf carts and maintenance equipment and installed a new irrigation system to the South course. All the lodge rooms were renovated, along with the restaurants. Zeke’s Greenside Tavern seats 160 and is open 10 hours a day, seven days a week, with live entertainment on a patio that overlooks the course.

“We have a vision…and feel good about the plan and the execution after nearly three years,” said Rice. “Our members and resort guests are excited about our efforts. They see our dollars are being well spent.” Etowah Valley is a premier spot for Western North Carolina fund-raising tournaments. The annual Pro-Am benefits the Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County and has raised more than $300,000 over the past 20 years. The Asheville Tourists Children’s Fund, a charity that buys shoes for children in neighboring Buncombe County, holds its tournament at Etowah, as does the WNC Sports Awards Banquet tourney, which raises funds for its scholarship program. “We’re very proud of where we started from, evolving from a brickyard to a 27-hole facility,” Merrick said. “The new owners have worked hard to bring it back to where it used to be and to extend that even further. We are in the midst of short-range plans for improvement and there is a long-range plan to make things even better. Q & A with Wyndham Championship tournament director

he 78th annual Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 14-20 at Sedgefield MARK BRAZIL Country Club in Greensboro. Wyndham Championship tournament director Mark Brazil answered some questions about the tournament for Triad Golf Today. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in the home stretch heading into the Wyndham Championship. You always say the field will start taking shape after the Open Championship which appears to be the case again this year. We already have some great names in the field. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always nice when your defending champion can come back to defend his title, especially with Si Woo Kim who got his first win here last August and went on to win the Players Championship in May. He has struggled at times this year but played some beautiful golf down at Sawgrass, and that was fun to watch. I saw him at the Quicken Loans

event, and he seems to be in good spirits. Then to have three big horses like Webb (2011 champion Webb Simpson), Billy Haas and (2007 Wyndham winner) Brandt Snedeker commit early is a big deal. They are probably some of the biggest favorites we have in our region.â&#x20AC;? And then we announced on Media Day that three-time champion Davis Love III will be back and that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve given an exemption to his son, Dru. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had my eye on Druâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s progress as a junior golfer since he played our AJGA event at Sedgefield and when he was playing at Alabama. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s neat to see him turn pro and actually have a pretty good U.S. Open. He missed the cut by one, but I think thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where he realized he can actually play out there. Davis Love III, one of the most influential pro golfers associated with our tournament who won here in three different decades and might be the first grandfather to win our event, is as good a friend as weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever had. To be able to invite Dru and have Davis back after his injury last year and have a father-son playing will make it a special year at the Wyndham Championship.â&#x20AC;?

And they wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be the first fatherson duo to play in the same Wyndham Championship, will they? â&#x20AC;&#x153;We did the exact same thing in 2002 when we invited Bill Haas while he was an amateur and still in school at Wake Forest, and he played with his father, Jay. Back then, it was a lot easier for us to give exemptions to amateurs. Since we became the last event for players to keep their cards for the next season, our policy has been to give exemptions only to players trying to keep their cards or professionals trying to earn their cards for the first time, and the PGA TOUR completely supports our approach.â&#x20AC;? How do you see the field continuing to come together in the final few weeks? â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you look at the FedExCup rankings, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see some of our good buddies are fairly high up in the standings, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re hopeful some of them like Kevin Kisner, Adam Hadwin and Brendan Steele who are ranked in the top 15 will play here. And weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re hopeful for Kyle Stanley and Brian Harman, but

there are a lot of players that need to play well these next few weeks. If they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to need some starts to improve their FedExCup position before the playoffs. I look at players who are 50th and beyond because some big-name players are in that 50-70 range â&#x20AC;&#x201C; some of the top players in the world - and they need to improve their position if theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re interested in the huge payday at the TOUR Championship. They might have to look at the Wyndham Championship as a possibility. Then we look at those who are 70th and beyond; again some big names like Jim Furyk, Henrik Stenson, Ernie Els â&#x20AC;&#x201C; some of those guys will need to play well soon, and we might fit in their schedule.â&#x20AC;? When the first career ace is extra special

he first career ace is the one that is never forgotten, especially if there’s something special about it. Of the 24 aces reported since our July issue, there are 11 first-timers and several special ones. Chandler Metz: Learning the game solo

By KURT DUSTERBERG handler Metz flies under the radar among North Carolina junior golfers. The Wilkes Central High School graduate has never hoisted an individual tournament trophy. His name isn’t connected with a prominent golf instructor and you probably won’t find him honing his skills on the driving range. But he has a game that will take him to college in the fall. He just chose a path of his own making. “I don’t really have a golf coach,” Metz explains. “I’ve been self-taught. I feel like the tournaments help me improve more than anything, more than any advice anybody gave me. You see what parts of the game you need to improve on.” Metz earned a scholarship to Western Carolina University on the strength of a golf game he has cultivated since shortly before high school. “My eighth-grade summer I got pretty serious about it,” he says. “I didn’t really start playing tournaments

seriously until my sophomore year. I wish I would have started a little earlier, but better late than never, I guess.” His best finishes have come in recent high school tournaments. He shot 77-73 to lead Wilkes Central to second place in the 2-A state championship in May. He is consistently in the 70s wherever he plays, so he makes a good case for learning the game solo. “I just feel like golf is more of a mental game,” Metz says. “From my perspective, having a bunch of swing thoughts in my head is going to do more harm than good for me. I’m sure there are some positives, and if I got a golf coach I could probably improve, but I’ve made it this far without one, and I enjoy doing it on my own.” That’s not to say no one has ever weighed in on his swing. The pro at Oakwoods Country Club in Wilkesboro has taken a look at his posture and alignment a couple times, “but I’ve never had a real lesson,” Metz says. He goes against the grain when it comes to practicing too. Rather than spend hours on the driving range, he tries to play 18 holes most days. “I don’t enjoy beating balls on the range hours on end,” he says. “I prefer going out and playing. That’s the best practice for me.” And when he’s out on the course, he keeps the ball in play.

“I’m a pretty straight hitter,” he says. “I keep it out of trouble for the most part. I’m not the longest hitter, but I’m always right there in the fairway.” Metz doesn’t second-guess his methods. He has mastered the game on intuition and adjustments, and he has a Division I scholarship to show for his efforts – regardless of other accolades. “I’ve never really won a big tournament, but I always go out and try to compete with the best,” he says. “I’m not the greatest golfer out there, but I’m not far off. So I do the best I can and see how I stack up against everybody.” Best Round: A 65 at Oakwoods Country Club. “It’s not too difficult of a course. I hit a lot of wedges into the holes. If you just hit some fairway and greens and make a few putts, you can go pretty low.” Honors: Three-time Mountain Valley Conference player of the year. Magic Moment: “This year at our state tournament. Finishing up on 18, I was in the last group. Tapping in my last putt to seal the deal and go back-to-back (state titles). That was pretty amazing. Everybody was out there on the green.” Goals: “On the short term, I’d like to play pretty solid over the summer in tournaments to get prepared to go to Western Carolina. Once I get there, I want to get in the top five and make the traveling lineup. On the long term, it’s always been a goal to play professional golf. It’s pretty tough to do, but you never know.”

Mast headed in right direction with golf swing

By KURT DUSTERBERG achael Mast spent part of her summer in Puerto Rico on a mission trip with Tyro United Methodist Church. While her group put a new roof on a community center, she gave the walls a fresh coat of paint. “I’m learning a lot about the people here and how God moves in their lives, and how he can influence us,” she said with proper humility. Then she quickly shifted to a less theological observation. “And I got to knock down a wall with a sledgehammer,” she boasted. “So there’s that.” A sledgehammer swing might be only a distant cousin to the golf swing, but the West Davidson High School graduate and incoming freshman at UNCWilmington has made a swing transition before. “I played softball before I started playing golf, so I had more of a softball swing than a golf swing,” Mast said. “It was hard to figure out what to do.” For now, she has settled on

the golf swing. But she nearly ended up staying with softball. “My sister was on the high school golf team,” she said. “I guess you could say I was recruited by her. My family has always played golf. My grandfather started us on that.” During her first two years playing golf, Mast never took a lesson. But sensing she could raise her game, she began working with Chris Haarlow at Precision Golf. “I’ve improved a phenomenal amount,” she said. “Without him, I would not be where I am now.” She credits Haarlow with helping her earn a second place finish at the CGA’s North Carolina Junior Girls’ Championship at Bermuda Run Country Club in June (78-76154). Coming late to the game has left Mast playing catch-up with her skills, but she is long off the tee and is confident with the putter in her hands. Her biggest challenge is tackling the mental challenges of the game. “Probably not getting ahead of myself in the round,” she said. “If I’m on the 15th hole, it’s hard (not) counting what my score is. I just have to pace myself

and let whatever is going to happen, happen. I try not to force anything.” Regardless of her relatively short career, she is determined to accelerate her progress. “I learn every day,” she said. “You learn weaknesses and strengths of your game. The risk-reward part of it is the most immature part of my game.” Her biggest reward so far has been an invitation to join the Seahawks program. Wilmington was my only Division I offer. Coach Cindy Ho saw I had potential, so I committed last July. Honors: Central Carolina Conference player of the year 2016. Four-year all-conference player. All-region team three years. 2017 Victories: Low medalist (74) in the 1A/2A state Central Regional. Best Round: Carded 69 at the North Carolina Women’s Amateur at Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte in June. “I was doing everything well, striking the ball, putting, getting up and down.” Magic Moment: “In May, I holed out for an eagle in match play in the Tar Heel Cup at River Landing in Wallace. It was on a par-4 and I had 126 yards to an elevated green.” Goals: “At UNC-Wilmington, I really want to make a spot for myself to play. I’m excited to play for coach Cindy Ho. She runs a phenomenal program. I’m hoping the team reaches the goal of getting back to nationals and winning the conference. Then I hope to gain the experience I need to play professionally. If your ball is in the fairway you deserve a good lie. I also like the root rule. If your ball is in the trees, and one of those trees is in the way of your swing, you simply apply the root rule. There’s got to be a root there somewhere and you shouldn’t have to spend five minutes looking for it. Once you’re on the green, you only have to putt into the knock-back range, which is from wherever you feel like you can make the putt. Just think about all the time you can save by not having to line up and plumb-bob all those short putts. I get the yips just watching some of the PGA Tour golfers lining up all those tap-ins that would be gimmies under the Boss Hawg rules. At Gates Four, the only rule you have to understand is that Boss Hawg rules.
