Brazil and his staff have been brainstorming about ways to make sponsors “whole,” including fall and spring 2021 golf events at Sedgefield that may include lessons from a PGA Tour player, or golf outings at such locations as Pinehurst Resort, Eagle Point or Old North State Club. “The best part about these tournaments is watching little kids come out for the first time and freak out about getting autographs, that’s going to stink not seeing that,” Brazil said. “And not seeing the fans have a big time.”

eith Robertson has a hard time letting go of a distressed hemlock tree on the 4th hole. You see, it’s personal to him and his family. Hemlock Golf Club in rural Stokes County was built by his father Orel Robertson after he purchased the property from his father, who secured the 80 or so acres following the Great Depression. Orel was in the construction business and had never played a hole of golf in his life, but was talked into designing the course in the late 1960s by one of his work hands. “He did very well for what he had to work with and not knowing anything about the game,” Keith Robertson said about his father’s design. “If you would have seen this place before it was built you would have never thought my dad would have gotten a course in here. He took six months just to grade the front side.” Opened in 1969, Hemlock Golf Club was named after that lone hemlock tree on No. 4, although there are hundreds of hemlocks across from the course that line the hillside and banks along the scenic Dan River, which provides a splendid view off in the distance while teeing off on the downhill 163-yard 4th hole. “We’ve had some trees come crashing down on that hemlock tree and we’ve had to prune it, but I am saving two branches,” Keith Robertson says with a chuckle. “We’re hanging on to it. They wanted me to cut it down and I just wouldn’t do it.” Hemlock Golf Club plays at just 5,692 yards from the tips, but with more than 100 feet of elevation change, at least four drivable par-4s that measure less than 300 yards each, and small greens, it’s undoubtedly one of central North Carolina’s most unique golfing experiences. Brian Alley, the course’s former “cart boy” who is now the director of recreation at Primland Resort in Virginia, recalls the day 2002 North Carolina Amateur champ Derek Brown of Walnut Cove carded the course record of 54, or 16-under-par. “It was a pretty big deal to have that N.C. amateur trophy at Hemlock for a summer,” Alley recalled. “Derek was getting the ball in the hole that day and he was a guy who just knew how to play the game of golf. We were playing a little match with some older guys and they were getting upset because they are just getting drubbed by him, so they stopped playing after nine holes. But I was playing well so I continued on with Derek. Well, I shot a 64 and got beat by 10 strokes. Can you believe that? That scorecard is still hanging on the wall.” Orel Robertson passed away a few years ago, but Keith and his wife Cindy have kept the family golf tradition truckwww.triadgolf.com

You’ll find Keith and his son and teenage grandson working on the course seven days a week, while Cindy manages the facility, along with running the snack bar. The two say golfers from every state in the union except Alaska and Hawaii have teed it up at Hemlock over the years, as well as players from Canada, China, Japan and Saudi Arabia. And with the COVID-19 outbreak this summer, even more golfers are discovering the benefits of the sport as a recreational vehicle. “Would you believe we’ve got walkers who have started coming back,” Cindy Robertson said. “They just love the hills, they love the hollows; they love the site, the scenery. One guy even brought his wife with him just to walk.” The Robertsons say the course is on

pace for its most rounds since the 1980s. Keith Robertson says Hemlock Golf Club has undergone what he calls subtle changes over the years, including a new irrigation system that includes eight miles of pipe, 300 sprinkler heads and 100 valves. “It’s an old-fashioned system where we have to turn on the valves by hand but we finally have irrigation – all the fairways, all the tees, all the greens,” he said. The course was originally built with one set of tees, but there are now multiple sets of tees for seniors, females and juniors. And some of the holes, including Nos. 1 and 9, have been lengthened over the years to add more of a challenge. One not so subtle addition to the course can be seen on the third hole and a green complex ringed by a series of stacked rocks that sort of mirrors a prehistoric monument in England.

“The third hole was narrow and people were driving the green all the time so we wanted to cut a swale out in front to keep people from driving it as much, and when we started taking the sides down on the fairway we got into some rock,” Keith Robertson said. “As I was grading with the dozer I didn’t know what to do with these rocks and I got to thinking that I’ll just stack these things,” he added “Kind of reminds you of Stonehenge, doesn’t it?” Hemlock’s unique and short design, with two par-5s along the Dan River and a total of just three bunkers, is also priced right. You can walk nine holes during the week for just $11 and $14 on the weekends. Alley recalls how his North Stokes prep golf team had a tremendous “homefield advantage” playing its matches at Hemlock. “Hemlock is a course where if you know how to chip and putt, and know where you are hitting it you can shoot a 32, or you can shoot 52, too,” Alley said. “It taught us how to play golf starting at the hole and working our way out. “If you want to hit hero shots you have to pull them off,” added Alley. Cindy Robertson laughs when recalling her husband telling her if she marries him that she’s also marrying the golf course. “That’s has certainly been true,” she said. “It’s all challenging to me,” Keith Robertson added about the golf business. “But I’m the type that I’m not going to let it beat me. I am going to fix it to the best of my ability anytime I do anything.” That includes trying to save that lone hemlock tree as long as possible.

Asheboro native Brian Kearns keeps Primland Resort pristine By DAVID DROSCHAK

egendary English architect Donald Steel has designed just four golf courses in the United States, so he tends to keep a close eye on his layouts and how well they are accepted by the golfing public. Steel rests easy across The Pond knowing his most recognized and honored layout in the U.S. – The Highland Course about 20 minutes north of Mount Airy in the Virginia mountains – will be in prime shape year-round thanks to Asheboro native and N.C. State graduate Brian Kearns. Kearns, 46, worked as an assistant golf course superintendent at Raleigh Country Club for eight years before heading to Meadows of the Dan, Va., in 2004 to help grow in The Highland Course, which has consistently been ranked among the top 100 courses you can play in America for more than a decade. “Results speak for themselves,” Steel said of the work Kearns has done since the course opened in 2006. “Architects are heavily dependent on the skills of greenkeepers and Primland’s condition has been one of its appeals. To an architect living 3,500 miles away it is of enormous comfort.” Kearns is affectionately called “The Mayor” by the golf staff at Primland Resort. He has earned that reputation by being in charge but still delegating responsibilities, keeping morale and productivity up, and holding his crew to a high standard Kearns also meets. Primland from page 10 “How he manages his staff and how he gets the most out of his people are two of his strengths,” said Brian Alley, the director of golf and recreation at Primland Resort. “He runs a tight ship. There are no questions about that. You don’t see that at every golf course you go to. At some places Jim or Joe will call in and say they are going to be 15 minutes late, well not on Brian’s crew. And he is here on Saturdays, too. It would be easy for him not to be here every Saturday because he has such a good crew and it’s just a mow-andgo for them. But for him to make the 50-minute trip up the mountain it shows his dedication.” Kearns has settled in the rural Virginia town of Stuart, which has a population of less than 1,500. His first reaction to the area when applying for the job was like most who first make the trip up the picturesque mountain, past the Lover’s Leap overlook and to the Primland entrance. “Coming from Raleigh it was a culture shock,” he said. “There are two stop lights, a Hardees and a Subway in Stuart. But I’ve grown to love it. I met my wife here in Patrick County.” The Highland Course sits at an elevation of more than 3,000 feet, with stunning views of sharp peaks and even sharper drop offs to the Dan River below. Steel’s layout is a remarkable blend of challenge and playability despite the topography’s twists and turns. The award-winning layout features huge greens – 5 ½ acres in all – which is about twice as much as a normal golf course layout. There is an additional 4 ½ acres of sharply mowed surrounding green contours. “We have five guys on the crew that walk mow the greens every day or roll them,” Kearns said. “But our biggest challenge with labor is the surrounding green contours. You can’t really use a riding mower on them because there is so much movement to them, so we send out six people 2-3 days a week to walk mow those. That’s two people that would normally be riding versus six pushing mowers on the green surrounds.” Kearns and his crew often execute checkerboard fairways to add a touch not seen at many courses, and keep the course’s many native grass areas trimmed and “popping” with color at different times of the year.

“A lot of people think these native areas are low maintenance and they are really not,” Kearns said. “We do some manual weed control in these areas and try to keep them golden and that’s a huge challenge but we like to accomplish that completely to give the course ‘that look’ we’re trying to achieve.” “Unlike most other courses in Virginia and the Carolinas, Primland’s elevation meant that the dominant grasses were bent and fescues,” added Steel. “Brian was quick in adjusting to their needs. He is not a shouter from the rooftops but happy, too, to be judged by results. Unexpected happenings are many in his trade but his calmness under pressure accounts for his speed in spotting problems and making them right.” Alley sums up the quality Kearns brings to his post as “attention to detail.” “It’s those little things that separate Primland Resort from other courses. Very rarely in Brian’s line of work do little things fix themselves, they always become big things. He jumps on items pretty early,” Alley said. “I’ve been to Primland Resort several times,” added McConnell Golf director of agronomy Michael Shoun, Kearns’ former boss at Raleigh Country Club. “The golf course is always in perfect condition and Brian does a great job on a very, very difficult piece of property.” Shoun remembers Kearns standing out as one of his best assistant superintendents at historic Raleigh CC, one of North Carolina’s top private layouts. “He could see things that other people could not, and that’s the making of a good

superintendent,” Shoun said. “You don’t have to tell him things to do all the time, a lot of times he would come back and say ‘Hey, I see some things on the golf course that we need to do.’ Brian was that kind of guy. And he noticed things that didn’t necessarily cost a lot of money or take a lot of time, but it would be a fix that would really stand out and things that the members would notice. And Brian was willing to do whatever it took. There were many times if I told him we had to spray some insecticide in the late afternoon after play he would say ‘no problem let’s get it done.’ That’s the kind of attitude you want.” Kearns deals with everything from high winds, to afternoon dew removal on the bent grass fairways to chopping firewood for the Primland Resort lodge during the winter season. His crew was even in charge of clearing hiking trails this summer as more and more resort guests took to the outdoor paths because of COVID-19. “We do things a lot of maintenance staffs don’t do because Primland is such a big property,” Kearns said of the 12,000acre resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains. ”We help a lot of other departments and some of them help us because we’re a big team here. We maintain the 5 miles of hiking trails around the golf course, a 5 ½-mile trail called the Old Appalachian Trail, the disc golf course and we even built a new bike trail last year. We all take ownership in it. Some on our crew have gone through a naturalist program at Virginia Tech. We even have a guy we call The Nature Boy.” A round of golf at The Highland Course costs $245, a price it can demand because of its scenic beauty, course conditions and stunning layout. That steep cost is not lost on Kearns. “We’re seeing more and more golf in November and even in March now,” Kearns said of a resort course that approaches 9,500 rounds a year. “If you

are open in November and still charging a pretty good rate you feel obligated to treat the course for one person as you would treat it for 100 golfers. The first thing I tell a new hire is people are paying $245 per round to play here, and housekeepers should know people are paying $500 a night to stay here in a room. That’s where you feel some of the pressure, but if I didn’t like that type of pressure I would be somewhere else.” It can be easy to take the beauty of The Highland Course for granted after working on site for 16 years now, Kearns said. “But it could be your friend’s first time ever playing here and you’ve told him it’s special and we all know you’re told him it’s special,” Kearns said. Steel recalls the early days when ownership required a grow-in period for an entire year – mostly unheard of in the business – which allowed for one of the most pristine openings of a golf course in recent times. “Brian Kearns has been a doughty pillar of strength for Primland’s entire existence,” Steel said. “He joined the staff during the construction and grow-in period so he knows where everything is. Like all good superintendents, he uses his eyes and feet, precious qualities even in this highly mechanised and computerised age. Every day, powers of observation are necessary in spotting something that may have occurred overnight. Soles of the feet also tell you more about green surfaces than sophisticated measuring gadgets.” Kearns often has time to think as he winds his way up the mountain for work. “You have to pinch yourself coming in here every day,” he said. “It’s just such a beautiful place to work. You have to think about how much you would miss a place when you’re gone and I would miss this place tremendously if I were to go somewhere else.”

ess than 20 minutes into his final round at the 2020 Carolinas PGA Professional Championship, Tommy Gibson was forced to change his mind set. Gibson, 31, an assistant professional at WinstonSalem’s Old Town Club, had played rock-steady golf during the prestigious tournament’s first two rounds. He posted a pair of even-par 72s at Daniel Island Club in Charleston, S.C., which left him entering the final round in a three-way tie for seventh place, just three shots behind the leader. Yet, after a rare double bogey on the first hole of his final round, Gibson said he had to quickly rethink his strategy. He knew that only the top nine finishers at the event would qualify for next April’s PGA Professional Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla., and from there a chance to qualify for the 2021 PGA Championship. “So, I start with a double, so my focus probably shifted a little bit from trying to win the golf tournament,” he said. “Now, I’m just trying to play smart, so I can finish in the top nine to qualify for the National Club Pro. (I’m thinking) maybe I just need to back off a little bit, just make sure I’m hitting some greens, giving myself chances for birdie and not putting more pressure on myself.” Reducing the pressure seemed to do the trick as Gibson proceeded to reel off four birdies during the next 13 holes. “I’m not a big scoreboard watcher, so I never looked at the leaderboard one time during the final round, just because I’ve always felt looking at the board just causes more stress,” Gibson said. After lipping out an 8-footer for birdie on the final hole, Gibson received a surprise from his playing partner. “Aaron Black looked at me and said, ‘Man, that (putt) was to take the lead,’” Gibson said. “I said, ‘Take the lead for what?’ He said, ‘For the tournament.’ I said, ‘You’re kidding me.’ He said, ‘Haven’t you been watching the leaderboard?’ I said, ‘No, I’m just trying to make birdies the last few holes, you know?’” Gibson then began a tantalizing, half-hour wait for the final three groups to finish. He and one other competitor, Ray Franz, a professional at Daniel Island, were the leaders in the clubhouse at 1-under. “Most of these guys coming in are 1-under,” Gibson said. “I think five or six guys. Everybody’s hitting it up there to, you know, 10, 12 feet, missing; 10, 12 feet, missing. I started thinking, ‘I’m going to be a playoff. I gotta go the putting green. So, I ran to the putting green and hit about 30 or 40 putts.” By the end of the round, Gibson and Franz were joined by three others — former PGA Tour win14

ner Neal Lancaster, The Reserve Golf Club’s Ryan Tyndall and Matt Bova from the Country Club of Charleston — in a sudden-death playoff to determine the champion. “All of them are great players,” Gibson said. “We went to the 18th tee and we all hit pretty decent drives at the par-5, where it’s not really worth going for it in two. So, everybody laid up. I was the last one to hit. I think I had 82 yards and hit it to like a quarter of an inch from the hole.” After tapping in for birdie and watching Lancaster and Bova miss their birdie attempts, Gibson said he caught the eye of tournament director Mike Whitenack. “Mike says to me, ‘How special would it be if you won this thing?’ I said, ‘I first started playing golf at 3 years old. My dad was a club pro. He still is today. He played in the Honda Classic two years in a row, taught (LPGA standout) Cristie Kerr how to play golf,” Gibson said. “’Just to be able to play in a (PGA) Tour event would be unbelievably humbling and special for our family.’” Of course, there was one player still alive. Franz was the final member the fivesome to putt — and he calmly drained an 18-footer for birdie, sending the remaining two competitors back to the 18th tee box. “I said, ‘You gotta be kidding me,’” Gibson said, with a chuckle. “I’ve played professional

golf for about 8 or 9 years and I’ve come so close to making it so many times. Billy Mayfair knocked me out (of qualifying for the Wells Fargo Championship) at Quail Hollow one year. I missed the U.S. Open by two shots one year -- just one thing after another — just so close. Then to see it starting to crumble away again, you know you get that feeling like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is not going to happen again.’” Replaying the 18th hole for the third time in less than an hour, Franz and Gibson once again had good looks at birdie — Franz from 15 feet and Gibson from 8. Franz missed on his attempt. “I had this calm sensation and tingling all over my body,” Gibson said. “I was like, ‘You know, it’s all in your hands now. This is what you practice for. I’ve practiced these short putts for so long, for this moment.’ “I just went to my routine, got over it, looked at the hole one time, looked back and hit it. It got about 4 feet from the hole and my eyes just started watering, because I knew it was going to go dead center,” he said. “And it did. So that was pretty cool.” Along with a winner’s check for $8,500 and a spot in the 2021 PGA Professional Championship, Gibson also earned a spot in next April’s RBC Continued on page 15 www.triadgolf.com

Heritage Classic on Hilton Head Island, which will be his first PGA Tour appearance. “In 2012, I won on the Hooters Tour,” Gibson said. “There were 180 guys in the field and I won just under $15,000. It took 17-under to win a three-day event. But at that point, you don’t really get anything but a check. At this event, you get a pretty decent check and you get into a (PGA) Tour event. I would say this one might be my biggest win, because this one has better perks.” Gibson feels confident about his chances at next year’s PGA Professional Championship, to be contested April 25-28, 2021 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. “Fun fact about that golf course — that’s about 20 minutes south of where I used to work in Vero Beach, so I played in multiple mini tour events out there,” he said. “I know that golf course like the back of my hand. It’s pretty comforting to go somewhere that you know so well.” Gibson’s victory at the CPGA Professional Championship also continued Old Town Club’s stranglehold on the event. Wake Forest men’s golf coach Jerry Haas, an Old Town member, won the tournament in 2014. In 2017, Old Town head pro Charles Frost — who is Gibson’s swing coach — won the championship, followed in 2018 by another Old Town member, Steve Scott, who is most famous for his runner-up finish to Tiger Woods at the 1996 U.S. Amateur. “Old Town is the place to be right now, it really is,” Gibson said. “It’s very wide open off the tee, so it’s very friendly to someone who’s not a great driver of the golf ball, but you never have a flat lie on your second shot — the ball’s either below your feet or you’re tilting to a left or tilting to the right. And then there’s a ton of undulation on the greens. “When you add up the difficulty of the lies and the creativity you’ve got to have to play the golf course, I think that’s a big part of it. When you leave Old Town and you go to other places, it just makes other places seem so easy. It’s definitely a players’ club.”

Sibling Success The Mathews teens a dominating duo By DAVID DROSCHAK

ick and Emily Mathews often remind those writing about their accolades that the last name is spelled with just one “t” but there is no mistaking the prowess of these two when it comes to teeing it up. Nick is the top-ranked male junior in the Triad, according to the Tarheel Youth Golf Association’s most recent rankings, while little sister Emily is ranked second, fresh off her first victory at the prestigious Dogwood State Junior. The two teenagers from Mebane are arguably the best brother-sister golfing combo in the state. And while it’s common for older brothers to try to ditch their little sisters, these two are seemingly joined at the golfing hip. “It’s rare to find a brother and sister that are so motivated to help each other improve on their golf games and be each other’s biggest fans,” said Indian Valley golf pro Jonathan Dudley, who watched the siblings grow up while he was a pro at Mill Creek Golf Club. “These two pull for each other all the time and will literally practice for at least eight hours a day together. During COVID-19, I literally thought I was going to have to tell them to just take up fishing so that they would get off the golf course at some point.” Emily was in the driver’s seat at the 2019 Dogwood State Junior, taking a fiveshot lead into the final round with brother Nick on the bag. However, she was unable to close the deal, blowing a four-stroke lead on the back nine. Last month, the rising sophomore at Eastern Alamance High School rallied from a five-shot deficit to win by two strokes. Nick was unable to caddie because of virus restrictions, but was a cheering spectator for his little sister. “I just got caught up too much in the score last year; I didn’t stay in my own bubble. It was 99 percent mental,” Emily said. “Although I didn’t get the job done last year the Dogwood was probably my biggest golfing moment to date because I learned so much from it and it helped me win this year. It was awesome having Nick there to support me and keep my confidence up. I learned a lot from him in that 2019 tournament that helped me this year.” Mother Michelle Mathews and dad Jon Mathews met in the military in Texas and moved North Carolina in 2007. The couple then settled at Mill Creek Golf Club about six years ago with Emily and Nick. Jon is a recreational golfer who started taking Nick to the golf course when he was about six years old. “We found out that Nick had a talent for golf and patience for it early on,” Michelle said. “We got him started playing tournaments at around 8 or 9 years old. www.triadgolf.com

And we got Emily going when she was about 5 or 6 years old.” The two have been pounding balls ever since. “I guess they could be doing worse things, right?” Michelle said. “We’re extremely thankful for our parents, they have put us here and given us the resources and always support us,” Nick said. “Mill Creek also helps us out a ton; they are super helpful, super supportive. Before we lived out here my dad would have to leave work, drive me to a course and we would play just nine holes. If we weren’t doing that we were out chipping foam balls around the house. We are grateful and lucky to have this place to practice at. You can just improve your game at a much quicker rate.” Nick is left-handed, while Emily swings from the right side. “It’s cool that her and her brother can practice literally side-by-side because one is right-handed and one is left-handed, and they’ll just watch each other hit golf balls and critique each other,” Dudley said. “Nick is definitely the mechanics guy and Emily is definitely the one who has the mind for the game,” added Dudley. “They are both super hard workers and very impressive, but Emily definitely has a knack for getting around the golf course. I was always hard-pressed to get her to say a whole lot as she is very quiet and just goes about her business.” Nick was named the North Carolina Junior Golfer of the Year last year, and signed to play collegiate golf at North Carolina State this fall. In the 23 junior events Mathews played in 2019, he finished in the top ten 11 times and had a scoring average of 73.58. “Nick is a tremendous worker” said N.C. State coach Press McPhaul. “He has great love for the game. He is technically sound with great instruction. I have been consistently impressed by Nick’s game, work ethic and character as I have gotten the chance to know him. I am proud to have him at N.C. State.” Emily and Nick relish the routine of practicing and playing – and then repeating the method to the madness day-after-day. “We just love the process of improvement,” Nick said of the long hours he and his sister log on the range, course and putting green. “That ultimately is what it comes down to, trying to get better every day. We have very similar goals and the kind of things we’re striving for so it’s nice to have someone as ambitious as you are; we both push each other every day. “It’s cool, there is camaraderie, but there is also some competition,” added Nick. “We’ll go out and play and just the other day she was beating me in match

play. It’s a lot of fun and it pushes you to keep getting better and to stay sharp. You can’t get content practicing with someone as hard working as her – she is always trying to kick my butt. It keeps it interesting and it keeps it fun.” The two have been taking instruction from Raleigh’s Chase Duncan, who has given lessons to some of North Carolina’s best players, including professional golfer Akshay Bhatia, Wake Forest star Emilia Migliaccio and former ACC golfer of the year Stephen Franken. “We saw some solid players that we know of and heard of that were working with him and what we heard from everybody was Chase was a phenomenal coach,” Nick said of the choice of swing instructors. “It has been great. He wants the best for us.” “We’ve been gradually improving my swing for the two years we’ve been working together,” added Emily of Duncan. “He has helped me become more comfortable and more confident with my swing. I thank him for that because I’ve not always been super confident with my swing and it has gotten better and better. When I need it, we’ll execute certain tweaks just to improve it.” Nick will be leaving his little sister behind in a few weeks, exiting the junior ranks for college golf. He’s looking forward to the challenge, but will miss his loyal practice partner. “I have been gearing toward college

golf my whole junior career,” Nick said. “The resources I am going to have and the next level of competition is just really exciting. I am going to learn so much about myself and grow so much as a player. That’s all you can really ask for at each stage. Sure, I would love to play professional golf, but my goal right now is to just stay in the moment. “Golf has brought my family together so much,” he added. “When you are an athletic family you are always going to events and pulling for each other. They have held my phone, taking thousands of swing videos for me or throwing me back balls on the chipping range. The one thing I really love about the game it has brought us together a bunch.” There is no telling with two talented junior golfers just how many hours Michelle and Jon have also logged on the green grasses across North Carolina and beyond over the last decade – rooting for sibling success. “It pays off 100 percent seeing Emily winning, seeing Nick going to the school he wanted to go to,” Michelle said. “As a sport parent you want it as much if not more for your kid than they want it for themselves. To see her rally and come back like that at the Dogwood was this huge sense of joy and victory. You see them working so hard and to see it pay off is everything you want for your kid.”

An ace for the ages: Asheboro golfer scores first ace at age 80 By STEVE WILLIAMS

wen Deese has been playing golf for 60 years and he never gave up hope of making a hole-in-one. The wait ended on Father’s Day, June 21, when he holed out his tee shot on Asheboro Municipal’s fifth hole. “I started playing when I was about 20,” said Deese, who is now 80. “I’ve come close a couple of times. I’ve hit it within an inch or so a couple of times but you know aces are sort of luck. I’ll take it.” Regular playing partner Harold Stallings watched Deese sink his ace using a 7-iron from 112 yards. “It’s about 110 yards so it wasn’t a big shot,” Deese said. “It took me a 7-iron. I’ve lost a lot of distance.” Deese, who doesn’t recall ever seeing one of his playing partners make a hole-in-one, was able to watch his shot find the cup. “I didn’t really get that excited, but I was glad to make it of course.

It hit on the front of the green and rolled in. That green had a little break to the right and it rolled right in.” The next goal for Deese is to shoot his age, but he is realistic. “I shot 87 that day,” said Deese, who had an 8 handicap index at one time. “I play bogey golf now. I play par-4s personally as par-5s because I can’t reach them in two. If I do, the ground has to be really hard.” Golfers who have never made a hole-in-one shouldn’t give up. Wellness products helping golfers focus By BRAD KING

olfers around the Triad area and beyond seeking to improve the quality of their game by feeling better physically or sharper mentally are more often turning to “wellness” products, which have become one of the game’s fastest growing sectors. Many of these feel-good gamechangers include “CBD.” An acronym for “cannabidiol,” CBD is a compound found in industrial hemp. CBD is promoted to bolster sleep, emotional regulation and stress reduction. For golfers, this can mean optimizing focus and mental state, and in turn — hopefully — lowering their strokes per round. And while golf isn’t a contact sport, long days pounding buckets of balls on the driving range can produce overuse injuries throughout the body. Golfers are also attracted to the touted benefits of CBD that include reduction of inflammation, which helps promote injury recovery. Several golf outlets carry CBD products including Golf Galaxy, which has a large display of Myaderm CBD Cream in three sizes, a twopack for $5.99, a 1.7-ounce bottle of advanced therapy cream for $49.99 and a double strength cream for $79.99. Golf Galaxy employees say it sells well with a certain demographic, including older athletes, who use it for pain relief. The Brightfield Group, a cannabis and CBD market research company, predicts CBD products will soon be a $22 billion industry. Yet for many, there is still confusion about CBD — and whether it’s even legal. Both marijuana and hemp come from the same Cannabis sativa plant; the main distinguishing trait between the two is their levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (“THC”), the cannabinoid responsible for the “high” associated with marijuana. Industrial hemp has 0.3 percent THC and is therefore federally legal. Conversely, marijuana is bred to have higher THC concentrations and is federally illegal. With the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, the growth, production and manufacturing of hemp became federally

legalized — allowing hemp-derived products such as CBD oil to become more readily available. And with that, a formerly taboo topic that golfers were reluctant to discuss has suddenly become a bourgeoning industry. In 2019, there were six CBD-based companies displaying their wares at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando. At this year’s PGA Show in January, that number had more than tripled. Although the professional tours and the FDA have yet to endorse or regulate its use, CBD has found plenty of converts in the world of golf. Some golfers turn to the CBD pain relief roll-on, cream and gummies. For others, CBD is ingested orally, with vaping being the quickest and CBD edibles lasting the longest. CBD by itself is still not an approved treatment for any mood disorder. But early studies suggest that it can help people manage stressful situations, such as the first-tee jitters. Several tour professionals have reportedly added CBD oil to their regular health routine. Popular Champions Tour player Scott McCarron partnered with a Coloradobased CBD company to regularly improve his sleep and focus on the course. PGA Tour pros Charley Hoffman, Lucas Glover and Morgan Hoffmann endorse a brand called Medterra.

One North Carolina company with a major presence on the floor in Orlando was Charlotte-based cbdMD, a “seed-to-shelf” brand that has been breaking down barriers in the cannabis industry since its inception in 2015. With their U.S. headquarters in Charlotte and an international office in Northern Ireland, cbdMD does not operate any brick-and-mortar locations. Their products are grown and produced domestically, and available exclusively online. Before finding the perfect location to plant its roots, cbdMD visited three continents, 14 countries and eight states. The company says that with unique soil composition, a near-perfect climate for year-round growing and strict growing standards, domestically sourced hemp is superior in quality. cbdMD carries a wide variety of organic, non-GMO, vegan and gluten-free CBD products including tinctures, topicals, vaping oil, capsules, bath bombs, gummies and even pet products. The company, which offers programs for veterans as well as people with disabilities, stands out in the market for its high-quality product at an affordable price. Amongst many “firsts” – including, the first CBD company to join the New York Stock Exchange and the official founder of National CBD Day, cbdMD was the first CBD company to advertise in Times Square on the

famous Digital Billboard on New Year’s Eve. “As a whole, we’ve been denied advertising in many realms for a long time,” said Caryn Dunayer, president of cbdMD. “The Farm Bill and the general interest in CBD by the masses have allowed us to explore these types of mainstream marketing opportunities, not only for cbdMD, but for the entire industry.” Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson announced a partnership with cbdMD during last year’s PGA Championship and displays the company’s logo on both sides of his visor in tournament play. His sponsorship deal also includes a host of additional marketing and promotion for the growing brand. “We’re looking forward to the continued success of Bubba, while educating the public on the many benefits of hemp-derived CBD,” Dunayer said. “By joining forces with one of the biggest names in the sport, we’re excited to see how the golf community embraces the newfound popularity of CBD.” “I’ve personally felt the benefits of cbdMD’s products,” Watson said. Watson joined a stable of athletes promoting cbdMD from a wide range of sports, including track and field, beach volleyball, MMA fighting and more. Jonathan Stewart and Steve Smith Sr., two of the Carolina Panthers’ all-time great football players, join Watson as Team cbdMD athletes. “Those closest to me have seen what CBD can do firsthand,” Smith said. Smith hopes the partnership will help make the public more aware of CBD’s variety of properties and uses. Since signing the agreement, he has taken his message to the airwaves, most notably during the Freddie and Fitzsimmons Show on ESPN Radio. For Stewart, cbdMD products have allowed the former running back to live more comfortably in retirement — including his time on the golf course. “After the constant contact and injuries my body endured throughout my career in the NFL, cbdMD has been able to help me live a better quality of life during retirement, stay competitive with my golf game, and keep up with my little girl day in and day out,” Stewart said.
