Winston-Salem ranked best on the East Coast for golf and livability

ccording to a recent study by SmartAsset, North Carolina has some of the best cities for golfers to live in, with Winton-Salem ranking fourth overall. In order to find the best cities for golfers to live in, SmartAsset looked at data on factors relating to both golfing and livability. The study looked at the density of golf courses and clubhouses, the number of rainy days and days with extreme temperatures, as well as unemployment rates, housing costs and income after housing costs. The idea was to find a city that someone could reasonably expect to have a job and decent disposable income, also with

available golf courses and favorable playing weather. Portland, Ore., placed first in the study that was dominated by Arizona and North Carolina, with Winston-Salem placing in the top five, Raleigh coming in 11th and Greensboro 15th. For golfers who want to stay on the East Coast, the study says Winston-Salem is your best bet. Winston-Salem has 3.25 golf courses and country clubs per 100,000 residents, the 14th-most in the study. While this city is great for golfing, it may be even better for livability. It has some of the lowest housing costs in the study, with data showing the median housing cost in

Winston-Salem of $788 per month, seventh-lowest of any city the study looked at. Smaller cities tended to have more golf courses per capita. If you are a person looking to maximize time on the green, you may have to give up living in the big city. The five largest cities in the country, measured by population, are New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston and Philadelphia. All of these cities ranked in the bottom 30 for best cities for golfers to live. Bermuda Run Back in the game Private club in Advance attracting top-notch players, tournaments

s ClubCorp celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2017, Bermuda Run is celebrating its own resurgence of sorts. Once home to the popular Bing Crosby Clambake Pro-Am, and host to two NCAA men’s golf championships in the late 1970s and mid ‘80s, the private club west of WinstonSalem is starting to attract tournaments again as part of its make-over since being acquired two years ago by ClubCorp, the Dallas-based golf management firm. Bermuda Run hosted the North Carolina Junior Girls Championship in June on the heels of last year’s N.C. Women’s Match Play Championship, and more offerings are on the way as the club “invests” in a competitive golf atmosphere. 6

“Having these tournaments gives validation to the architecture, to the agronomy – to the whole team who is here,” said head pro Nathan Broyles. “When I first got here the very first meeting I had with the golf committee they mentioned they wanted to get back in the swing of things with tournaments. Basically, I took that to heart. It is a slow process and you can’t get everything right away but you can start to build things.” The tournament push at the 36-hole private club actually started somewhat by chance and from a previous relationship Broyles held with Carolinas PGA executive Cory Armstrong in South Carolina. Forest Oaks in Greensboro was set to host the Wyndham Championship qualifier in 2015, but couldn’t pull it off. So, Armstrong picked up the phone six weeks out from the event to ask

a favor of Broyles, to see if Bermuda Run could hold the event. He immediately said yes. “The biggest part Cory loved when he came here was the number of volunteers we had out here helping and how the players were treated during practice rounds by the membership,” Broyles said. “That’s the key. You can go into some places and it’s kind of cold, or you can go into some places and it’s warm and fuzzy. You can’t want to have the event for the acclaim and notoriety that it gives you without having -not just the staff but the membership -- supports it because the players who are there can tell instantly.” Membership director Paul Howard said Bermuda Run is a prime location for tournaments because it has a built-in advantage – 900 homes inside its gates.

“It is huge,” he said when asked about the proximity of its volunteer base. “With our longer term members the Crosby is still ingrained in them, so they love to entertain and host people. We’re trying to build that history with our younger members. Last year, we hosted the PGA Tour qualifier and the East Course is normally closed that day but there were members with their sons who took the day off of school to come out and walk around. It’s neat to see guys like Lee Janzen or some of the other name players and guys from all over the world. It’s sort of a pride thing with our members.” Bermuda Run’s East Course was designed by noted architect Ellis Maples and is considered its championship layout. Bermuda Run from page 6 Course is becoming more and more popular, especially since it has its own membership level that carries just a $1,000 initiation fee and $295 monthly dues. “Opening up a junior executive membership for 40 and under is reasonably priced too so now there are three levels of golf people can get involved in,” Broyles said. “You can find what fits your game or find a membership here that fits their lifestyle. It is not one size fits all. With ClubCorp, we don’t charge big initiation fees and we don’t charge assessments, so guys who are not used to being country club members can come in here and be a part of it.” Word of ClubCorp’s improvements to the playing surface over the last two years has spread across the Triad, and beyond. “We’re getting a lot of competitive golfers joining the club,” Broyles said. “You can get a pretty good game out here right now. Guys who were playing out at Tanglewood and other places have joined.” The proof is in the numbers. When ClubCorp took over membership stood at 910. It is approaching 1200 midway through 2017. “ClubCorp invests in golf,” Broyles said. “We are now the No. 1 player in golf in the United States and our CEO has been ranked as the No. 1 most powerful man in golf. Golf is a big focus of what we do.”

“One of the nice things is Bermuda Run is such a mature property,” added Howard. “You walk in and the clubhouse is awesome. And it’s not just the multiple levels of play here; it’s also the different age groups that are coming in now. When you get to that size of membership you look around and the demographics are very different than they were 10 years ago. This is a very, very active club. Families upon families are joining for the lifestyle. And we are the only private club on the west side of Winston-Salem. Yes, we maintain a private status but we make it approachable for a lot of people and that’s been our absolute niche in this market.” What’s next for the upstart Bermuda Run? Maybe a North Carolina Open or North Carolina Amateur Championship, Broyles said. “We’ve been fortunate that we’ve been asked instead of us asking,” Broyles said about hosting future championships. “Bermuda Run has a great variety of golf holes and elevation,” added Carolinas Golf Association executive director Jack Nance. “It has proven itself over the years as a true championship course having hosted U.S. Open qualifiers, CGA championships and of course NCAA championships. We are excited to be a part of the club’s resurgence and look forward to hosting more CGA championships.”

Longleaf: On the right track

Southern Pines course rejuvenating golfing spirit

hen most golfers think of Pinehurst, a high-end resort where U.S. Opens are held comes to mind. But 4 miles away on Midland Road in Southern Pines, Dan Van Horn has a different vision of golf. And he believes it's the future of the game. In fact, Van Horn may be the one of the most revolutionary figures in golf. More than 20 years ago, he founded U.S. Kids Golf, which is designed to bring youths into the game and hopefully keep them there for life. He developed a series of lighter golf clubs that kids could swing easier. Then he brought the U.S. Kids World Championship to the Pinehurst area, where it will be held for the 12th straight year in August. Two years ago, the Atlanta resident bought Longleaf Country Club in Southern Pines and renamed it Longleaf Golf & Family Club. It serves as sort of a headquarters for U.S. Kids Golf. Now, he is pouring money into renovating Longleaf. But his grandest idea yet is being implemented at the course. It is called the Longleaf Tee System. It gives the course seven sets of tees and golfers should use the tee based on how far they hit their driver. There is more information about the system at lonfleafteesystem.com. “We call this ‘a living laboratory of learning what to do’ and hope to be an inspiration for the whole industry,” Van Horn said. “We can bring professionals here and talk to them about our tee system and how it impacts people. We can talk to them about our junior program and how kids are brought in from the outside and learn how they stay with it.” The renovations at Longleaf began last year when a 10,000-square-foot putting green was installed, a six-hole, par-3 course was built and the practice range was enlarged. The nines were also reversed to put the first tee next to the practice range. Maybe it is Van Horn's attention to detail that has made U.S. Kids Golf successful. He is not satisfied with the putting green so it is going to be torn up and rebuilt with more undulations to make it more challenging. On a one-day visit to Longleaf in early June, Van Horn spent 10

10 minutes talking to a landscaper about where some trees should be planted to funnel golfers in the right direction as they walk off the 18th green. Of course, their conversation was nearly drowned out by the noise of saws and a beehive of workers moving all around them. “I'm trying to explore what it's really like to be in the golf club business,” Van Horn said, “and try to rejuvenate it or rekindle the spirit of it, and bring kids and families into the game. Until we got on this side of the business, I really didn't understand what it's like to run a course and what the challenges are to do that.” Figuring out the tee system is easy and begins on the practice range in the tee assessment area. A player hits his driver toward color-coded posts on the range that begin at 100 yards and are spaced 25 yards apart to 250. Based on how far the player can carry his driver in the air, that determines which set of tees he should use. All seven tees with yardages are marked on the Longleaf scorecard. Jeff Cowell, the Longleaf director of golf, said the tee system is not a suggestion. “Everyone should play the correct tees,” he said. “Then the course is scaled to your ability. It just makes so much sense.

There's no men's tee, there's no women's tee. Every tee is rated for men and women. It’s such an easy thing to understand. It's not based on age or gender, just ability. If you hit some good shots, you'll make birdies.” Jim Hardy, the director of the U.S. Kids Golf Academy at Longleaf, learned firsthand how well the system works. A female member asked him which tees she should play. Hardy took her to the assessment area and learned she should be playing from the shortest distance because she hit her driver about 100 yards in the air. “She broke 80 for the first time,” Hardy said. “I knew then we were on the right track for sure. We've had women make their first eagle or even their first birdie.” Besides making the game more enjoyable, the tee system speeds up play. Cowell said four-hour rounds are common at Longleaf now no matter what the player's ability is. “Dan started scaling the golf course for U.S. Kids tournaments so kids could have success. But this works for everybody,” Cowell said. Hardy, a Houston native, moved from Texas two years ago because he wanted to work with U.S. Kids Golf. “With the tee system, golfers can now

play the same game as the Tour pros where you hit a driver and a 7-iron to a par 4,” he said. “That's 475 yards for them, 425 for me and about 180 yards for Johnny 8-year-old. Age, gender and handicaps don't mean anything. It's all based on how far you hit your tee shot. “By scaling the tees apart, everybody can play the same two clubs into a hole. Now it's a fair fight.” Van Horn came up with the tee system because he wanted to keep his two children interested in playing golf. “The idea I had from 20 years ago was, if a kid plays golf he wants to make a par,” he said. “So, how was I going to get a 6-year-old to make a par? Well, I learned how far a 6-year-old could hit the ball and how to set up a course for that.” Longleaf has the traditional four sets of tee boxes that most courses have but then adds three more sets of tee markers at the edge of the fairway closer to the green, 25 yards apart. It's a system that the American Society of Golf Course Architects has endorsed. Noted architect Rees Jones has become the national spokesman for it. And it's a system that all involved believes every golf course should use. “It helps grow the game and keep people in the game longer,” Hardy said. “We are recommending it for all golf courses and people are listening,” Van Horn said. “Our senior women play 3,200 yards and they love it. A par is now a realistic score and it improves pace of play. “There's no going to a bigger hole, or doing foot golf or making the game different. It keeps all the traditions of the game alive, while making it more fun and making a good pace of play.” “It's a game changer,” added Cowell. “It makes people have fun. Everybody who has tried it, loves it. I've had a few people resist but not many. It's so logical, you can't argue with it.” Almost as popular as the tee system at Longleaf has been the par-3 course. It is called Bottlebrush because that is the stage of a longleaf pine tree when it is establishing its roots. The course is located between the 13th and 14th fairways and the longest hole is 100 yards. “It's a ton of fun,” Cowell said. “We play it all the time. You can play it in 20 minutes. It's a great warm-up for a round

Hailey Joy: From T-shirt to top player

ailey Joy won her first golf tournament at age 10. Aside from playing against a field of all boys, her lasting memory of that competition is her wardrobe. “I remember that day I wore a T-shirt because I forgot my golf clothes,” she says with a shy laugh. “So I have a picture with a brownie on my shirt with this big trophy.” Since then, Joy has dressed for the success that has followed her. She has won two Tarheel Youth Golf Association events and has a victory on the Peggy Kirk Bell Tour. The rising senior also has the winning touch in high school golf. She finished fourth in the 3-A championship, helping Rockingham County High School to its second straight team title. “That did mean a lot to me because it was the second year in a row we won,” says Joy, who finished fourth (79-72). “At my school, we don't really win a lot at sports, so I enjoy playing one

of the sports that brings a lot of fame to the Rockingham name.” After her taste of early success, she began playing with a purpose when she turned 12. “When I noticed how much better I was getting, I really enjoyed the competition," she says. "Whenever I won a tournament, it would just make me feel really good. That's why I started practicing all the time. And I wanted to be able to compete with people who were better than me.” To reach that goal, she works with Chris Haarlow and Robert Linville at Precision Golf School, and she puts in the necessary hours at her home course, Greensboro National Golf Club. Because Joy is already strong off the tee, she spends most of her time on the practice green. Joy finishes most days playing a five-hole loop where she can test most of her shots. And when it comes to the mental game of golf, she has a handle on how to manage her thoughts. “When there are girls in our rankings who are better than me, and I get paired with them, that's motivation for me,” she says. “I try not to think about it as competing against them that day. I'm competing against myself most

of the time in tournaments. When I make it about playing against other girls, it gets into my head and I start thinking too much. That doesn't help me at all.” Her next challenge will be college golf. Joy will attend UNC-Greensboro in the fall of 2018. She took a few months to consider the school's offer before finally choosing the Spartans. “Eventually I asked myself, ‘what am I waiting for? I already know I want to be there,”’ she says. "Whenever I go there, it feels like home to me. That's one of the things I love about it." Honors: 2016 Mid-State Conference player of the year, Rockingham County High School varsity golf MVP. 2017 Victories: Joy shot 73 in a TYGA Triad one-day tournament at Forest Oaks Country Club in February. Best Round: 69, last summer at Bryan Park Players Course. “My dad has a company league. They asked me to play every year to help them out and get their scores lower. I had three birdies in a row on the last three holes. I won a scorecard playoff. That was cool because I beat all these men who were way older than me.” Magic Moment: “Last year, we were in the high school regional tournament at Greensboro National, and I was 4-under going into the ninth hole. Then on the ninth hole I doublebogeyed. But I thought it was really exciting to go 4-under. I ended up shooting 72.” Goals: “To improve my chipping and putting overall. I've already seen improvements compared to all the other girls I do the drills with. It's really exciting to see the improvements."

Kayla Smith: A late bloomer in the junior ranks By KURT DUSTERBERG

ayla Smith is like so many accomplished junior golfers. Her online profile shows plenty of top-10 finishes and rounds in the 70s. What separates her from the others, however, is how quickly she made her way into the top tier of junior golf in North Carolina. Until this time last year, Smith had only dabbled in golf. A rising junior at Williams High School in Burlington, she is finding her game. “I was a late bloomer to golf,” Smith said. “I’ve only had one full year of competitive golf just because I’ve been playing other sports throughout my childhood.” After years of soccer, swimming, basketball and softball, she finally returned to the sport her father introduced her to when she was seven. “Compared to all the other sports, golf was the one that clicked with me and the one that I had the drive to continue playing competitively,” she said. Heather Hauk, the club’s teaching pro. “I’m at the golf course pretty much every day,” Smith said. “I try to balance school work with golf, which can be pretty tough sometimes. I’m always doing something out on the course.” When she made the decision play in competitive junior events, she knew there would be a learning curve. Most of her competitors had years of experience managing nerves and handling the pressure of big shots. “I was very nervous, pushing myself out in the big world of competitive golf,” she said. “I think now that I’m somewhat used to it, I feel like I’ve learned a lot of new things.” In her first Peggy Kirk Bell tour event in 2016, Smith finished tied for 15th, shooting in the 70s all three rounds. She followed up with a second-place finish in a Tarheel Youth Golf Association event, posting a 74 in a one-day tournament. Whatever she lacked in experience, she quickly made up for in poise. “I’m not necessarily focused on being new to competitive golf, I just feel like I want to go out there and play my game and not concern myself with (the competition),” she said. She capped off 2016 by finishing tied for second in the 3-A high school state championships (76-74), leading Williams to a secondplace overall finish.

After one season of solidifying her status as a strong tournament player, she added her first win early in 2017. She shot 75 in a one-day PKB event in April. Now, she’s ready to build on that momentum. “My summer is going to be very packed because I’m relatively new to the sport competitively,” she said “That will be good to really push me out there and see exactly who’s around me.” Once she’s out among her peers, she won’t think about being a newbie – just a golfer. “I’m a competitive person,” Smith said. “I’m kind of a perfectionist, so I like to make sure everything is on square before I go to a tournament. That really helps with my drive in the sport.” Honors: 2016 Mid-State Athletic Conference, all-conference team. 2017 Victories: She shot 75 in PKB One-Day Series in April. “I ended up having to go to a playoff. Having a playoff for your first win was kind of nerve-racking.” Best Round: Recorded a 69 at Greensboro National Golf Club to win the Mid-State conference tournament. Magic Moment: “After I won my tournament in April, I walked off the green right to my dad, and he was smiling. It was just great for him to be there because he introduced me to the sport.” Goals: “I want to improve my ranking, play competitively and get up toward the top of the leaderboard consistently. instead of banging balls on the range.” Three big projects are in progress this summer at Longleaf. The greens are being resurfaced with Mini Verde Bermuda grass to make them more heat tolerant. They should be ready for play by September. The inside of the large clubhouse is being remodeled with a new restaurant, kitchen and bar area. The rest of the clubhouse is getting new carpet and other upgrades. A new outdoor area is being established with a retaining wall. Finally, a building for the U.S. Kids Golf Academy will go up next to the practice range. It will have two hitting bays and be equipped with all the modern teaching technology such as launch monitors and simulators. Hardy, who has more than 200 youths now in his golf academy, said the building will be the centerpiece of the grand plan at Longleaf to keep families involved in golf. “The old scenario was dad spending six hours away from the family on Saturday and Sunday to play golf,” he said. “That was the rule of the past. We're flipping that around. Longleaf is the new model of the way the golf industry needs to go.” Van Horn's visionary thinking could help a golf industry that has struggled for more than a decade to keep players and attract new ones. Last year, the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship drew more than 1,500 players and their families to the Pinehurst area. They represented more than 50 countries. “I'm a dreamer,” Van Horn said. “We first came to Pinehurst in 2006. Coming to Pinehurst is a fantastic thing. The people here have really welcomed us. They like the event. It's good for business for everybody. “This is all about spending time with your kid. There's no other sport like it where you can actually be in the center of the ring. You can't be in a baseball game unless you're coaching and watching.” The focus on family is right there in the Longleaf name now and Hardy thinks that's a good idea. “Longleaf and U.S. Kids want to make this a great experience from the time you get into the parking lot,” he said. “Everything will be top notch. The seven sets of tees create a great experience for golfers of any level. It has been eye opening. Getting families involved is the only way junior golf will grow.”

Arnold Palmer course offers lasting memories

By DAVID DROSCHAK uch like the late Arnold Palmer did for so many years, Scotch Hall Preserve is extending a handshake to

all golfers. Known as much for its bite as its beauty on bluffs overlooking the expansive Albemarle Sound, the management and ownership team at the Palmer signature design have undertaken a softening of one of North Carolina’s most scenic layouts, giving high handicappers, ladies, seniors and juniors a more playable experience. There are now 15 new tee boxes that offer golfers a choice of avoiding some forced carries. And large sections of tall fescue rough have been trimmed closer to the ground, so errant balls can now be found … and played again. “As developers and operators we have to recognize that golf isn’t a problem because of how much time it takes,” said Michael Abbott, president of Beacon Land Development, the management group that was hired at Scotch Hall Preserve in 2015. “It’s really a value proposition on how you are enjoying your time. So, if we can solve the problem with how you get off the tee and if I can keep you in play we’re all going to enjoy golf better.

“The problem today is that if all four of us go play after we hit our tee shots we may not see each other again until getting to the green,” Abbott added. “We try to deal with that in how we’ve reconstructed our tees and the way we’ve changed some of the landing areas. We’ve made golf easier here -- and I think golf is ready for a little bit easier instead of harder.” Scotch Hall Preserve, about a four-hour drive from the Triad, has undergone its fair share of initiatives over the last decade, trying to at first plant the developmental real estate seed for second or vacation homes, to now driving home an offer as North Carolina’s next, great golf destination. The latest management team may finally be on to something. There are now sunset cruises, jet ski and boat rentals, fishing adventures, tennis courts and a pool deck overlooking the Albemarle Sound – the second largest estuary in the United States – as part of the course’s expanding potential. “It used to be that real estate drove everything here. It drove all the decisions because it is a spectacular piece of land,” said Thomas Niederkofler, president of the ownership group Rial Corporation. “Everyone thought that ‘look people are going to want to move here because it is so spectacular and when there are enough peo-

ple here then we’ll build out the operations.’ With Beacon we’ve taken the opposite approach, which is let’s get the operations dialed in and let’s make this a truly fantastic experience once you get here and then that will drive the real estate sales. We’ve kind of flipped around the approach.” And turning heads for those who have not experienced Scotch Hall Preserve within the last year. There are new accommodations along a fairway of the back nine, which is within walking distance of the restaurant, called The Shed, with its trendy interior armed with darts, drinks and daily specials. There are steak and seafood nights, fire pits and so much more. “We’ve really made a commitment to have overnight accommodations,” Abbott said. “One of the things before was say you drove an hourand-a-half to get here, where did you stay? Now we have 28 beds on property. A lot of folks who travel to play golf travel as groups of 8, 12 or 16, and now they have the ability to come here for a couple of days and play the golf course a couple of times and stay here overnight.” The Palmer signature course is one of a handful of courses you do want to sleep on it, and then get up and tackle it again. Wyndham Championship prepares for a successful summer

he 78th annual Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 14-20 at Sedgefield MARK BRAZIL Country Club in Greensboro. Wyndham Championship tournament director Mark Brazil answered some questions about the tournament for Triad Golf Today. Q: The Haas Family Invitational presented by BB&T wrapped up recently. Was it another great tournament with a battle between two future Southeastern Conference golfers? A: We really appreciate BB&T stepping into the role of our presenting sponsor. Eugene “The Machine” Hong from Orlando was back this year to defend his 2016 title, and he was right there all week. Trent Phillips from Inman, S.C., played a great tournament, too. These guys really battled all four rounds. Eugene had a birdie putt to win it in regulation, but it slid past the hole. Trent won the tournament on the first playoff hole; he took on probably the world’s best junior golfer that’s still playing junior golf events and beat him with a confident birdie on a hard par four in a playoff. Trent will play at the University of Georgia, and Eugene will go to Florida, so these guys will be seeing a lot of each other through their college careers, and I hope we’ll see them

back here in a few years playing in the Wyndham Championship. The best part about the Haas Family Invitational is that so many of these kids make it out on TOUR – 62 Haas Family Invitational alumni are now playing on the PGA TOUR. U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka played here, Rickie Fowler played in this tournament, so did Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed, Billy Horschel, Brian Harman, Justin Thomas won it, Peter Uihlein won it, and he’s playing the European Tour. So it’s an awesome recruiting opportunity and we see the next generation of PGA TOUR pros come through and play the Haas Family Invitational. Q: And how about that show Koepka put on in the final round of the U.S. Open? A: The three birdies in a row on the back nine finished one heck of a performance. Bobby Jones said something like nobody ever wins the Open, people just lose it. That was absolutely not the case with Brooks. Some guys backed up, but Brooks played great with a final-round 67 and won the U.S. Open. In that final round, Erin Hills showed its teeth a little bit. That performance from Brooks was one for the books - we’ll all remember that one. He’s an unbelievable talent; he’s one of the best athletes out there and has played the Wyndham Championship twice and finished tied for sixth in 2015. He’s going to have a tremendous career; he’s just getting started.

Q: Wasn’t it nice to see our defending champion win the Players Championship earlier this year? A: We always pull for our former champions - especially in the year after they win, but we really haven’t had a lot to pull for because Si Woo Kim has been injured. He’s missed some cuts and withdrew from some tournaments, and we’ve been wondering how badly he’s hurt. This guy has one of the best swings on TOUR; if he gets a little bit of confidence, he’ll be near the top of the leaderboard, and that’s what happened at the Players. He swung the club so well. It was so much fun for all of us here in the Triad to see Si Woo play well and finish if off in style. Probably the best part for us after he won was how he kept talking about how his experience at the Wyndham Championship propelled him to take that final round on, and he felt really calm because of what he learned during the final round of the Wyndham Championship. Then it was great to see him around the leaderboard at the U.S. Open. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him win again soon. Q: How are hospitality sales, and what’s still available? A: If somebody wants to come out and entertain a small group, maybe two people or four people for example, we’re going to offer that option in the Champions Club and possibly some other venues around the course. Our pro-ams, skyboxes and luxury suites are

Ownership and Beacon hired Beau Welling Design out of Greenville, S.C., to come in and look at every hole and figure out the best place to place the new tee boxes, designing the “forward tees” to measure between 4,300 and 4,500 yards instead of the previous 5,300. “It’s just more variety to pick from and more playability to pick from,” Abbott said. “Again, this is all about playability. We’re trying to make it to where everybody can play golf together. Distance has become a big deal and forced carries have become big deals and we’ve tried to eliminate that. A person who can’t get it out there that far now has a place to play from. For somebody who is a 10-15 handicap they benefit by the fact that we now mow some of the outer areas down. The beauty is more in the views of the water instead of maybe some of the tall grasses you’ve seen out

here. You’ll now be able to play the golf course with one ball instead of three. “Listen, the game has been screaming for it so we decided as a group that it was more important to groom the golf course in a way where it really played in optimal condition rather than have a golf course that played to optimal difficulty,” he added. “We took all the lions, tigers and bears away and said ‘Hey, go play.’ Because of the angles and the way this golf course sets up the lower handicappers will still get a premium challenge out here because it hasn’t affected the way they play the golf course.” Scotch Hall Preserve has also gotten some significant traction offering season passes -- $600 for 55-and-older for the year and $900 for anyone else, with renewals available at the end of your term. Attractively priced overnight packages are also driving Triangle area golf traffic to sleepy Merry Hill. “Coming to Scotch Hall for a week-

Wealth and access has taken him down many unusual roads seeking solutions to his injuries. These choices have now compounded his personal life status. Few thought that was possible. This is a cautionary tale for young athletes who came to the game hoping to emulate Tigerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meteoric career. Too many young athletes, even teenagers, suffer repetitive use injuries. The human body was not meant to throw curve balls, to be repeatedly clobbered in the head, or generate club head speeds nearing 130 mph. Sports coverage contributes to this need to be the best there ever was. It is a standard that makes little sense. You canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t compare Snead to Snedeker when the equipment has changed so much. My wish for every great athlete is to be the best they can be today; to be the best within the span of a career. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to annoy â&#x20AC;&#x153;stat boy,â&#x20AC;? but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m okay with that.

Eights add up to one for Andrew Kennedy at Oak Valley

ndrew Kennedy played a game of Crazy Eights while golfing at Oak Valley Golf Club on May 20. Using a Titleist No.8 ball and an 8-iron, Kennedy aced Oak Valley’s 146-yard No. 8 hole. “No. 8 has always been my favorite number,” Kennedy said. “A lot of my friends give me a hard time because I set my alarm clock on an 8 every single morning.” However, Kennedy said he doesn’t always play a ball with the number 8 stamp. “I usually play No. 4 just because they are a little more common. Sometimes it’s hard to find Titleist 5 through 8s but my dad (Paul) gave me a sleeve of Titleist 8s a couple days before and I just happened to using an 8 that day.” Paul and younger brother Brooks were in the threesome when Andrew made his second career hole-in-one. Neither father nor brother has ever scored a hole-in-one, but have witnessed both of Andrew’s. His first came while playing in a match his junior year (2014) at Mount Tabor High School at Maple Chase Country Club. After a standout career at Mount Tabor, Kennedy played a year of collegiate golf at Gardner-Webb before transferring to Wake Forest to focus on academics. He is a rising senior and serves as student manager of the golf team. He plays Oak Valley regularly and says the 8th hole fits his eye well. “It was into a stiff breeze and I hit a stock 8-iron right on a string. It was really a cool feeling with all of the 8s and it being one of my favorite holes out there.
