A living golf lab that never slows down

he U.S. Kids Golf Foundation took its mission to heart three years ago and purchased the Longleaf Golf & Country Club in Southern Pines. Its goal was to help kids have fun learning the lifelong game of golf and to encourage family interaction that builds lasting memories. The group is making great strides in accomplishing that mission at Longleaf. “We are treating everything we do at Longleaf as a living laboratory for growing kids and family golf in a club environment,” said U.S. Kids Golf founder and president Dan Van Horn. “Our goal is to implement best practices in a real-life situation.” A state of the art U.S. Kids Golf Academy continues to evolve along with the Longleaf Tee System, which has properly scaled the golf course for players of all skill levels. The past 12 months have been a whirlwind of activity at Longleaf with the completion of several property enhancements to the facility. The clubhouse renovation has been completed and includes upgrades on the existing golf shop, locker rooms and public spaces on the inside and outside of the clubhouse. In August 2017, U.S. Kids Golf opened its first restaurant, Heartwood Grill & Greens, which has become a popular dining outlet for the club members and the Southern Pines community. The restaurant features a new bar and lounge, two separate dining areas, a private dining and meeting room, and an outdoor seating area with a halfway house style bar. The outdoor dining area is highlighted by a fire pit and extensive landscaping that is adjacent to the lighted practice putting course. U.S. Kids Golf hired executive chef Charles Toomer to lead its culinary team in making Heartwood a premier restaurant for the area, and Heartwood has earned high marks for the creativity of the menu and the quality of food and service. The restaurant is open to the public for lunch Tuesday-Sunday and dinner WednesdaySunday. Heartwood is also open for Sunday Brunch, which has become a popular addition for restaurant. The golf course has undergone extensive renovations and reopened last fall with brand new bermudagrass greens and improved design features for the rough and areas around the greens. Native grasses have been added to enhance the appearance of the course and to mirror the design characteristics of several area historical golf courses. The new putting surfaces are

more resilient to the high summer temperatures that are typical for the region. This year marks the 13th consecutive year that the U.S. Kids Golf World Championships will be hosted in the Pinehurst area. A recording breaking 2,400 junior golfers from over 55 different countries will compete in the world’s largest and most prestigious junior championship. The World Championships, which are actually made up of eight individual championships including two Parent/Child Championships, a Team Championship, a Teen and a Kids World Championship, two Van Horn Cup matches and a Junior Van Horn Cup match, will be played on a record 16 different golf courses from July 24-Aug.5. The Pinehurst and surrounding communities have benefitted greatly from this prestigious event over the last several years. In fact, the annual economic impact of the U.S. Kids Golf World Championships in the Pinehurst area exceeds $9.5 million per year, and the combined economic value for the community since U.S. Kids began coming to the “Home of American Golf” is over $120 million. Meanwhile, Longleaf Golf & Family Club introduced a cuttingedge redesign of the standard golf course teeing system with the new Longleaf Tee Initiative. The basis of the Longleaf Tee System is color-coded tees keyed to the overall driving distance of golfers. Players measure their drives on the practice range and match where they hit their drives to the corresponding color of one of seven tees on each golf course hole. This innovated system has been endorsed by the American Society of Golf Course Architects. “Scaling our course with multiple sets of tees makes golf more enjoyable for all

players,” Van Horn said. “We have seen significant results in increasing rounds of golf from golfers that are now teeing off from the proper tee distance to the green and the pace of play has improved dramatically.” U.S. Kids Golf sees this new tee system as a way to keep golfers with varied skill levels engaged in the game and to encourage new golfers to get involved in the game. U.S. Kids Golf will soon open the new U.S. Kids Golf Academy building that has been constructed as the centerpiece of the practice facilities at Longleaf. The building will provide a state-of-the-art teaching facility and includes two separate training bays. One of the bays will allow students to hit directly onto the driving range, and the other bay will contain a high-tech Foresight golf simulator. This will allow for teaching during inclement weather and at night. The Academy building

will also provide the location for custom club fitting, along with individual and group instruction activities. Since the establishment of the U.S. Kids Golf Academy in 2015, close to 350 students, ages 3-18, have received comprehensive instruction from Academy director Jim Hardy and golf coach John Wainwright. The Little Chippers program, which range from ages 3-5, introduces the game to the young golfers through a series of games and activities designed to hold the kids’ interest while learning the basics of the game of golf. The kids prog-

ress through multiple levels of U.S. Kids Golf Play & Learn curriculum and receive pins as they progress through Levels 1-5. The U.S. Kids Golf Academy has recently expanded the levels of instruction to go through Level 10. “It is rewarding to see the advancement of the Academy students as the move through the program,” Hardy said. “We continue to develop new ways to introduce and teach the fundamentals of the game to our students, all while they are learning and having fun. We have a couple of our older kids that started playing golf a couple of years ago and have recently qualified to play in the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship this year. U.S. Kids Golf is changing the way kids learn the game for the long term.” The U.S. Kids Golf Academy offers a wide variety of instruction options including individual and group lessons, kids’ camps, parent-child camps and daily after school and weekend clinics. The Academy also offers adult instruction options, and many of the members of Longleaf take advantage of the golf clinics that are offered as part of their club membership. In addition, the U.S. Kids Golf Academy serves as a destination for golf professionals and coaches to learn the fundamentals of teaching golf to kids and to become U.S. Kids Golf certified golf coaches. The Academy staff conducts several training seminars around the country and at Longleaf Golf & Family Club to “teach the teachers.” The Longleaf golf course is host to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state championships, the U.S. Kids Golf Red, White and Blue Invitational, and the 8, 9 and 13-year-old girls are returning this year at Longleaf for the U.S. Kids Golf Teen and Kid’s World Championships. “We try new things every day,” said Jeff Cowell, director of golf and general manager for Longleaf. “We are seeing more kids and parents developing interest in learning and playing the game. We are fulfilling the mission to provide lasting memories and having both kids and parents enjoying the game together. Our living laboratory never slows down.” Future plans for Longleaf Golf & Family Club include expansion of the pool, fitness and recreation areas. Pinehurst No. 4: A bold new look

hen Tom Fazio redesigned Course No. 4 it seemed like the right thing to do at the time. “I can remember being so excited at the photo shoot when it first opened and the 180 pot bunkers that were visually very stunning,” said Pinehurst Resort president Tom Pashley. “But when we starting looking at it the course just didn’t fit in with the overall Pinehurst esthetics anymore -- particularly in the original four golf courses. We just wanted it to look and feel more like what Pinehurst is known for.” Particularly since No. 4 shares some adjoining holes with legendary Pinehurst No. 2, which had undergone a major renovation by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw eight years ago, bringing back a sandy, native wiregrass feel to the original Donald Ross design. “We wanted both courses to be more consistent. But we didn’t want a replica of No. 2 either,” Pashley said of courses No. 2 and No. 4. “We wanted No. 4 to stand on its own;

it has more elevation changes and in my mind had more potential to be visually dramatic because of the elevation, the topography and the water.” Enter architect Gil Hanse, who was already doing work with the new nine-hole Cradle golf course at the resort, which opened last October and been met so far with overwhelming participation. Hanse and partner Jim Wagner, a hot design team ticket with the layout of The Olympic Course in Rio, among others, was awarded the job to redesign No. 4. The new look is bold and beautiful, with an opening expected in late September or early October. “The goal was to get the golf course to maximize the potential the site had, and then the hope was that we would build something compelling and interesting that would be a really nice companion for course No. 2,” Hanse said. “The work that Bill and Ben did to restore Ross’s golf course is world class and we’re just hopeful that No. 4 is a worthy companion.” Pinehurst No. 2 is a more treelined layout where each hole is an

entity to itself. Course No. 4 has a much different feel. “With No. 4 you start seeing multiple holes right after you finish playing the first hole, you get out to the second green and you can see three holes at once and the lake and it’s a preview of what is to come,” Pashley said. “That doesn’t happen on No. 2 so much. “And on the 12th green you can see six holes all at one time, and that’s kind of stunning, not only grass but you are seeing massive sand features, the wire grass and the lake -- it’s a feast for the senses,” Pashley added. “My hope is that No. 4 creates debate about what your favorite course is at Pinehurst. Each is going to offer different things to different people. The traditionalist and the historian are going to recount Ben Hogan’s first professional victory at Pinehurst in 1940. Somebody who wants more dramatic, visually stunning appearances is probably going to favor No. 4 and that’s a good thing. We’ll see.” Hanse says working on The Cradle in the preceding months was a major plus.

“It was definitely a warm up, not only for the methodology for how we proposed to construct No. 4 but it was a great warm up working side-by-side with the Pinehurst crew, understanding how they work with irrigation and grassing,” Hanse said. “That gave us a lot of confidence going into the construction of course No. 4; that we had a leg up. Sometimes when you start construction projects you have a learning curve that is a bit steeper when you get started and it can impact the schedule, but having done The Cradle there was zero learning curve when I got going on No. 4. It almost felt like we were continuing on.” True for Hanse, but his construction team had to re-adjust its conventional strategy with a piece of property at No. 4 that had already gone through architectural work over a number of decades from Ross, Robert Trent Jones, Rees Jones and Fazio. “It was the reversal of the normal process,” Hanse said. “If it is a virgin piece of ground we would go in and identify where the holes are going and then we would clear accordingly

Three-time ACC coach of the year leaves Virginia to head Wake Forest women’s golf program

im Lewellen had a tough time deciding to leave the University of Virginia, where she was the women’s golf coach to accept the same job at Wake Forest. Ultimately, she said, the fact that she’d be replacing Dianne Dailey, who recently retired after 30 years at Wake Forest, factored greatly into her decision. “Dianne is one of my closest friends, she’s an icon,” Lewellen said. “She recruited me as a junior golfer. There’s no one I think more highly of.” Lewellen, 47, takes over at Wake Forest on July 1 after having spent 11 seasons at Virginia. She coached the Cavaliers to some great successes, including a pair of ACC championships and the NCAA Championships on nine occasions. She was named the ACC coach of the year in 2008, 2015 and 2016. Lewellen was born in Salisbury, Md., but was raised in Raleigh where her mother still lives. She’s an only child and said her father died about five years ago. Her mother’s health is still good, Lewellen said, but she’s 80 and not as active as she once was. Lewellen said she’ll feel better living closer to her. “I feel like that area is home,” Lewellen said of central North Carolina. “I feel that I’m returning to my roots. And a job like Wake Forest doesn’t come open very often.” In addition to having grown up in the Triangle area, Lewellen graduated from UNC. She was in school there when she met her husband, John, who was enrolled at Duke. So there were lots of things pulling Lewellen back to North Carolina. But that’s not saying she won’t miss Charlottesville and Virginia. “My kids grew up here,” Lewellen said. “I’ve enjoyed UVA. I’ll always have a very soft spot for that program. I feel like I’m leaving the program in very good shape. Great

things will continue to happen at Virginia.” Lewellen and her husband have two sons, Jack and Simon. John Lewellen is an Episcopal priest and also coaches baseball and teaches at a high school in Charlottesville. Kim Lewellen said that because one of their sons is about to enter his senior year of high school, her husband plans to stay in Charlottesville for the coming year. He’ll keep teaching and coaching and their son won’t have to transfer from his school his senior year. Kim Lewellen is a graduate of Raleigh’s Broughton High School. She won back-to-back North Carolina Girls Junior Championships and was named an all-conference player while completing on the boys golf team at Broughton. She graduated from UNC in 1993 with a double major in speech communications and psychology. While at North Carolina, playing under her maiden name Byham, she was an All-ACC golfer during her junior and senior seasons, winning three collegiate tournaments, including the Lady Tar Heel Classic in 1992 and the Woodbridge Collegiate in 1993. In 2003 she was honored as a member of the ACC’s 50th Anniversary Women’s Golf Team. Upon graduating from North Carolina, Lewellen spent one season on the Women’s European Golf Tour and three more seasons on the Future’s Golf Tour where she won a tournament in 1997. She competed in several LPGA Tour tournaments from 1993 through 1997.

Lewellen’s role as a golf instructor dates to her undergraduate days when she worked as a teacher and counselor at North Carolina’s Golf School from 1992 to 1994. From 1995 to 1997 she worked as a teaching professional at Carmel Country Club in Charlotte. Lewellen was the men’s and women’s golf coach at The Citadel in 2003 and 2004 before taking over as women’s golf coach at East Carolina in 2006. From there she made the move to Virginia. Lewellen just returned from China where she was an instructor at a golf camp in Shanghai for children between the ages of 10 and 17. The camp took place in mid-June. Lewellen said that while not a lot of young people in China play golf, those who do are “very, very serious” about the sport. “It’s interesting watching how those from different cultures practice,” she said. Wake Forest’s golf team is expected to be very competitive in the coming season. They’ll be led by rising senior Jennifer Kupcho, who just recently won the NCAA individual championship. Also on the team is rising sophomore Emilia Migliaccio, who was the ACC freshman of the year.

Massei headed back to Pinehurst

att Massei, general manager of Prestonwood Country Club in Cary for 8 ½ years, has accepted a job at Pinehurst Resort. Massei, 52, has been named executive vice president of the iconic resort. Massei held many positions at Pinehurst from the early 1990s through 2006, including pro/ manager at The Centennial Course No. 8 when it opened. Massei shifted to hotel operations in 2001 and held his last position, as vice president of golf and club operations, before departing to become general manager of the Mount Washington Resort in New Hampshire. In 2009, Massei was named general manager of Prestonwood, a 54-hole private club with the largest clubhouse in the state of North Carolina and the annual site of the PGA Champions Tour’s SAS Championship. “When we first started talking it totally took me off guard because I really enjoyed my time at Prestonwood, the ownership was amazing and we did a lot of neat things investing into the property,” Massei said. “Things were going really well. But as I learned more about the things that are going on at Pinehurst, of which I had admired from afar, the moons kind of aligned and I felt like this was supposed to happen. “I’ve always had an incredible affinity for Pinehurst having spent 15 years here,” he added. “To think that after 12 years I could come back in this capacity and contribute again and be a part of moving Pinehurst further even more was a pull that I couldn’t resist.” In his new role as executive vice president at Pinehurst Resort, Massei will oversee resort, golf and club operations. Tanglewood Championship Course renovations on track

he renovation of Tanglewood’s Championship Golf Course is going well, with the facility on track to reopen around the first of October. “We haven’t experienced any major setbacks,” said Mike Wilcox, Tanglewood’s director of golf. “Our goal was to reopen Oct. 1, and with any luck, we’re going to hit it, or at least come awfully close.” The Championship Course closed May 14 for a major renovation that some say was years past due. The course’s 99 bunkers had become little more than large holes of mud and clay, washing badly when it rained and holding water for days following a storm. They’d become almost impossible to play from. New liners and sand are being installed in the bunkers, and their size is being reduced by about 40 percent. Other renovations happening during the closure include improvements to the cart paths and irrigation system, and the removal of multiple trees. Also, as part of the renovations, the course’s greens are being converted from bentgrass to Champion Bermudagrass. Wilcox said sprigging for the greens’ new grass will take place in mid-July. He said with exception of work to the greens, most of the improvements on the course’s front side are already finished. As of mid-June, improvements to five or six holes on the back side were also done.

The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners in January awarded Wadsworth Golf Construction Co. of Plainfield, Ill., a $2.4 million contract for the work. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the first of four payouts from a $15 million bond referendum for Forsyth County Parks and Recreation approved by voters in November 2016. The money for the parks and recreation work is part of a $430 million total bond package. Tanglewoodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s other two courses â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Reynolds and the Par 3 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; remain open while work is done to the Championship Course. The course is an historic one, home to the 1974 PGA Championship where Lee Trevino beat Jack Nicklaus by a stroke. Sam Snead, who was 62 at the time, finished three strokes behind Trevino. Pinehurst-based golf course architect Richard Mandell was selected to oversee the renovations to the Championship Course. He said he considers his selection an honor and is working to stay true to what he feels Robert Trent Jones Sr., the courseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legendary designer, would have wanted. While the course was built in the late 1950s, Jones redid it in many ways prior to the â&#x20AC;&#x2122;74 PGA, beefing it up to give it more punch against the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest golfers. Mandell said heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trying to return the course to the look it had for that PGA Championship. He agreed with Wilcox that the renovations are proceeding well. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If we can keep the rain away and get the grass planting done, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be fine,â&#x20AC;? Mandell said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everythingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s running smoothly.â&#x20AC;?

Reidsville’s Connor on verge of breakthrough victory

t’s a common talking point for followers of the PGA Tour: “the best player to never win a major.” In North Carolina junior golf circles that player may be Reidsville’s Noah Connor. It’s not that Connor hasn’t been successful. He’s won the Mid-State 3-A Conference individual championship the last two years while playing for Rockingham County High School and his state ranking record includes numerous top-10 finishes. In June, he narrowly missed qualifying for the U.S. Junior Boys championship and a week later he advanced to the quarterfinals of the N.C. Junior Championship. He also qualified and played in the N.C. Amateur earlier in June, one of his first forays into tournaments with adults. A busy upcoming summer schedule – with several non-junior tournaments included – will give Connor

plenty more opportunities. “I’m really close,” Conner said a day after falling in the N.C. Junior quarterfinals by a 1-up margin. “I feel really confident in my game. It’s usually just one of the three aspects (driving, irons, short game) of my game that keeps me from winning.” Connor noted that recent concentration on his short game and putting has been a key to his hot summer play. “It has been fun finding things that I used to be really good at or need to be improved and then to see the improvement over the past 6-8 months.” Connor recently received coaching from David Orr and Kelly Mitchum, a couple of noted shortgame experts. “Both have been extremely helpful in making me make some pushes forward in my game.” Over the winter, Connor switched from a left-hand-low putter grip

that he had used for about 2 years and is now honing his stroke with the traditional grip. “It is more making sure it’s consistent,” he said of the recent lessons. “There hasn’t been that much mechanical change. It’s exactly the same set up and the pace of stroke.” His swing coach is Kelly Phillips of Greensboro. “I see him as often as I can,” Connor said. “Throughout the school year, it’s about every two weeks. It’s less than that in the summer because of golf tournaments.” Rockingham High School coach Mike Williams has enjoyed working with Connor the last three seasons and is looking forward to his senior year. “He was the most advanced freshman that I’ve ever had,” Williams said. “He’s really motivated, and he’s got a great attitude on the golf course. When you watch him play, you don’t know if he’s shooting 3-under or 3-over. He’s a really solid player and he comes from a great family.” In the North Carolina Junior event, Connor won his first three matches by 3-and-2, 2-up and 2-and-1 margins before running into Drew Hackett of Charlotte, also a high school rising senior.

Hackett was hot early and went 3 up through eight holes before Connor rolled in three straight birdies to get square at the 14th. Connor took a 1-up lead at 15 before Hackett won the 16th hole with a birdie from inches away. Hackett took the 17th with a par and protected the lead with a routine par at the 18th. “He hit a lot of fantastic shots,” Connor said of Hackett. “As disappointing as it was, I missed the cut last year at that tournament and this year I walked away with a top-eight trophy.” Both players shot 68 in the round and Connor was 7-under-par for his 69 holes in four rounds of match play. Connor’s last win was in the Webb Simpson Challenge last July and he’ll attend that event again this year in late June at Mid Pines Inn and Lodge in Southern Pines. He tied for 15th in the Donald Ross Junior in December and had two top-10s in Tar Heel Golf Foundation events this spring. Following his strong June play, he will move up from his current ranking of 21st in the state junior rankings when the updated list is published in early July. Connor committed to UNC Greensboro as a sophomore and is excited about what lies ahead after his junior playing days. “I didn’t expect to be looked at that early by colleges,” he said. “I thought hard about committing that early, but I didn’t know if any other schools were going to offer anything. “After I looked at the school, I knew it was a great fit for me. My swing coach is 10 minutes down the road, the guy that works with all my equipment is another 10 minutes down the road. The facilities (at UNCG) are amazing, the guys on the team are fantastic and the coach is incredible. It was a no-brainer once I looked into the program.” www.triadgolf.com

Emelia Pack: Wearing Page pride on her back

melia Pack found herself in an unfamiliar position to start her summer. After suffering stomach pain in May, she was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel condition. After undergoing surgery in June, she hopes to make a full recovery and get back on the golf course in early August. That’s when she can try to take a full swing. Until then, she figures she can work on the one part of her game that doesn’t require her core. “I’ll get really good at putting,” she laughs. Pack is looking forward to her senior year at Greensboro Page High School. In an era when many junior golfers forego their high school teams, she wants to lead her team to the 4-A state championship. “During that time (of the year), it’s my top priority,” Pack says. “I

take it very seriously. I carry my school pride on my back. I love my team and competing for my conference. I care a lot about how we do with ‘Page’ on our shirts.” Pack tied for eighth in the individual competition last season, so she hopes to make a run at a 4-A title. “Coming into this year, it’s one of the goals I was really striving for. Obviously with the surgery, it will be a slight setback. But it’s still in the front of my mind, and it would be one of the things I would love to do this year.” Debbie Jones is her coach at Page. “She’s a great kid, as a studentathlete and a person,” Jones says. “I’ve never seen anyone work harder at the game of golf in my 11 years as a coach. When she started as a freshman she was worried that she wasn’t long off the tee. She has improved immensely from that time to now.” Pack was a late bloomer, slow to reach the physical maturity needed to play golf at a high level, but that was also the reason she began playing golf in the first place. From the age of 5, her passion was softball. But after seven years, she noticed her peers in travel ball were making strides that she was not. “It was a heavy load of softball, but I loved it,” she says. “But everyone was getting a lot bigger and stronger and I started to not love it as much. My dad had played golf his entire life, but he didn’t let me play because it messed up my softball swing. I said, ‘Dad, you’ve got to let me do something else!’” Her father gave in, and with more help from her grandfather, a club pro in Virginia, Pack began to fall in love with golf. Her game has come together steadily in recent years, but she made a breakthrough last October at the Jimmy Anderson Junior Girls tournament, an event staged by the Carolinas Golf Association and the Peggy Kirk Bell Tour. She shot 74-72 to finish third. Suddenly, she began to recognize her own potential. “When you do well at a tournament, it really opens your eyes that you can compete with these people. Beforehand, I thought I had the game to do it, but you still have in the back of your mind, ‘what if this is just a fluke?’ When you play like that and you finish (near) the top of

the leaderboard it’s eye-opening that you do know what you’re doing, you do know how to play.” When she took up golf, Pack made her initial strides by working on her putting. But she did eventually catch up to her peers with her tee shots. Today, swinging the driver is right up there with putting. “I love to hit the driver -- hitting it in the middle of the fairway, but also shaping my drive, having to hit a cut off a drive or a draw to get around a corner,” she says. “When I do pull off a shot with the driver -since it’s such a hard club for people to hit -- it’s very confidence boosting.” With two top-10 finishes on the PKB Tour this year, Pack’s game continues to round into shape, largely using her own instincts. In an era where many junior golfers work tirelessly with swing coaches, the rising prep senior likes to solve the mysteries of the game on the course. “I do get lessons, probably about once a month, but I’m more of a believer in just getting out there and playing because experience shows you how to handle a situation,” she says. “You’re not going to be able to learn that hitting 50 balls on the range instead of having that one shot where you have to hit to a tight pin position on the green.” Pack has verbally committed to play golf at Division II Queens University in Charlotte. She began her search looking at Division I programs, but she worried about getting caught in a numbers game where she might not be an impact player. “At D-2, I can be on a stronger team where I can compete for a conference championship,” she says. “We might go to nationals. For me, I felt like that would a much more enjoyable thing to do.” That decision comes as no surprise to her high school coach. “She truly is one of those student-athletes who cares about the team first, and then her own individual play,” Jones says. “She brings something more to the table as a person. Even if they are perfect to wear, I like watching Freddie tug his sleeve up before every shot. It is one of the finest pre-shot routines of all time. But, you know, guys (oops, men) your age have been grumbling about the younger generation for years. Instead of whining about muscles, they just mutter “damned flat-bellies” under their breath. Nothing new here. No matter the physique of the player, I agree that raw power has taken over sports. The thing is, I am more impressed with a player who can finesse a shot than by any Bay Street Bomber. Inside the Wyndham Championship with Mark Brazil

he 79th annual Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 14-19 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro. Wyndham Championship tournament director Mark Brazil answered some questions about the tournament for Triad Golf Today. The U.S. Open was pretty interesting this year – what did you think? It was certainly riveting TV with the combination of the Mickelson episode and the golf course getting a little difficult on Saturday afternoon because of the wind. Those were unfortunate situations, but at the end of the day, I thought it was a really good U.S. Open. I thought the best player won. Brooks Koepka will win a lot of tournaments, and I think he’ll continue to win majors. Brooks is a heck of a talent and an amazing athlete – when he has his ‘A Game’ there’s not a better player out there. I think it might be safe to say that one day down the road we might see Karl Vilips win a U.S. Open. What a performance at the AJGA Wyndham Invitational presented by BB&T! He’s a 16-year-old Australian kid with a couple of years of high school to go before he goes to Stanford. At Sedgefield’s Dye Course, from the back tees on one of the hardest courses in the country, he shoots a number nobody thought was possible in the third round.

He had 10 birdies and two bogeys and shot 62 to take a nine-stroke lead into the final round. He coasted to victory to win by six. Every now and then at our AJGA tournament, like Justin Thomas in 2009, it’s easy to wonder if we’re seeing the future of the PGA TOUR. I would put a lot of money on Karl Vilips being the future of the PGA TOUR. We’re getting plenty of hot weather now, so how is the winter kill at Sedgefield’s Ross Course healing? It’s making progress, and I’d say by the first week of July, the golf course will be really good, and by the middle of July, it should be excellent. How are hospitality sales? Hospitality is moving – we’re selling the last parts of it now. Pro-Ams are virtually sold out; we say virtually because we save some spots in case any celebrities want to play. We’re doing well, and I think we’ll finish strong in the final weeks. What’s left at this point if someone wants to make a late buy? The Champions Club is a great opportunity with food and beverage inside the Sedgefield clubhouse, but that package also includes access to five viewing platforms with full bars around the course, mainly on the back side. They’re on Nos. 7, 11, 12, 15 and 17 – those are

great spots to congregate and watch the tournament. We also have some small groups of tickets in some sky boxes in groups of two, four or maybe as many as 10 for the week -- that’s a great option with food and a full bar in the air conditioning and an outdoor area in front. We’ll also be announcing some things we’re doing with some Triad universities that we’re really excited about -- we’ll get to that a little later in July. We’re getting to the point where people are starting to ask about the field; it’s early, but how does it look? It starts coming together about now. We’ll be trying to get our past champions to play -- we’d love to have Patrick Reed back especially since he’s the reigning Masters Champion. It’s good to see Brandt Snedeker playing well again, he’ll be back. PLAYERS Championship winner Webb Simpson will be back, and Bill Haas will be back, so we’ll have a good lineup, but it’s really about who needs some points heading into the playoffs. You’ll see guys trying to keep their card, guys trying to get into the top-70 to secure a couple of playoff events and some guys around 60th in points that want to play well enough to move into the top 30 so they don’t have so much pressure in the first two playoff events. The PGA TOUR schedule for 2019 and beyond has been a hot topic this year. Where are we on the new schedule? There are definitely some big changes coming. I think the announcement will be soon. It’ll be a shortened schedule to get away from college and pro football. The PLAYERS Championship moves to March, the PGA Championship moves to May so those big five events, the four Majors and the PLAYERS, will be March through July. There will be four or five events that will finish the season, and we’ll be right in the middle of it in 2019. We’ll play a significant role showcasing the playoffs as the final regular-season event. Overall, I think it will benefit the Wyndham Championship.

Perseverance pays off for Burlington golfer It was worth the wait â&#x20AC;&#x201C; twice â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for Jack Troutman. The Burlington resident played more than 30 years before scoring his first holein-one and almost 30 more years before getting his second. Troutman, now age 90, started golfing in the 1950s at the old nine-hole Dogwood course in Mebane and was one of the first to play Shamrock Golf Course in Burlington when it opened in 1956. He finally scored his first ace at Shamrockâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s No. 2 hole during a parentchild tournament Aug. 19, 1989, with son Jeff. His second came while playing in the Midweek Seniorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; captainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s choice tournament at Quaker Creek Golf Club on June 13. Troutmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pitching wedge shot from 72 yards out on Quaker Creekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s island green 11th hole didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take the conventional route. It glanced off one of the rocks that fronts the green and bounced a couple times before landing in the cup to the amazement of playing partners Van Graves, Jim Mayfield and Curtis Haizlip.
