Wyndham Championship, corporate, ticket sales brisk following pandemic year By DAVID DROSCHAK

pproaching the two-month mark from its Aug. 12-15 dates, the Wyndham Championship has a game plan that includes its loyal legion of sponsors, tens of thousands of fans and a top-notch field. In other words, normalcy is near for longtime tournament director Mark Brazil, who is celebrating 20 years on the job with an event that on the surface appears to be clear of COVID-19 restrictions. One year after crowning a champion without fans in attendance because of state of North Carolina pandemic restrictions, Brazil is planning on at least 15,000 fans per day at the longstanding PGA tournament in the Triad, along with an additional 3,000 sponsors and their guests. And depending on the circumstances a month or so from now, that number could increase at host site Sedgefield Country Club. “It would be our call (to increase attendance) with the blessing of the PGA Tour,” Brazil said. “There are some tournaments that have turned the spigot on but I have been fairly conservative with all of this. We just want to be in a spot that if things went bad or got worse for any particular reason we would be able to kind of stay where we are. But if the numbers of COVID infections are down further and deaths are down and vaccinations are up, and people are feeling more confident then I’m going to feel more confident about it. I’m studying the state’s numbers every day and I am not making a political statement but the more people who get vaccinated the better in terms of herd immunity it will all be.”

For the first time ever, all tickets will be presented at the gate digitally on phones and the fans will have access to watching the pro-am on Wednesday. “It takes the need for a Will Call out of the picture because you don’t have to leave tickets for anybody; you will just email them their tickets,” Brazil said. “I’m sure we’ll go through a little bit of growing pains with that just because it’s our first year but we’re on track with that. It’s a big change and a big savings for us, which is great.” Brazil said the Wyndham Championship will once again feature such cool locations as Margaritaville, as well as a return to a popular military and veterans component along the 10th fairway, while teenagers 15-and-under will receive free access to the event courtesy of Harris Teeter. “In the end, we run this golf tournament for the people of the Triad and central North Carolina, and our friends in other states that want to come, and for our sponsors and their guests to have a great time,” Brazil said. “For us to have a tournament with no fans in 2020 was just heartbreaking, but it was different circumstances and hopefully it was a onetime-only thing. We got through it and put on a good show last year but that memory is gone. Credit to the American people for taking this thing seriously and getting closer to being through with this -- cross my fingers -- so we’re really excited and very bullish on this tournament, to the point we’re kind of adding hospitality boxes right now that we didn’t plan on and my operations director is about to kill me.”

rounds, with as many as 34,000 in attendance the year Tiger Woods played. For now, Brazil will continue to work the phones, calling player agents in order to land the best field he can. He will take a trip to Memphis and maybe Minnesota in the coming weeks to recruit players. One key target is U.S. Open champion Jon Rahm, who Brazil gave a tournament exemption to during his 2016 rookie season. “I’ve always told people once Jon wins one major he is going to be a guy who is going to rack some up and it would not surprise me at the end of his career if he had 6-8 majors. Lessons Learned Dona Lerner, Kathy Bounds have changed thousands of young lives By David Droschak

pend more than five minutes with Dona Lerner and Kathy Bounds and it’s evident there is a true division of labor in the well-oiled machine that is the Dona Lerner Golf Academy. Lerner is the face of the business while Bounds is the worker bee. The common ground is a love for the game and the thousands of young lives they’ve touched in the state of North Carolina and beyond with equal parts golf and life lessons. The line is blurred for many of the students they have taught from South Carolina to Virginia, from North Raleigh to New Bern, hard to distinguish what “lesson” is more beneficial as the junior golfers have advanced from puberty to productive adults. “For me, it has always been about the relationships,” Lerner said. “Golf is a by-product.” The two will retire from their Brier Creek Country Club location in September, leaving behind a legacy that will be difficult, if not impossible to replace. They will head to Hilton Head to unplug, but they both may find that task more of a challenge than filling their retirement days with pickle ball games, some much missed time on the links or sipping fine wine. Many among their dedicated fan base across many sectors of golf knew this day would come since Lerner will turn 62 this winter and Bounds is 68. Still, the recent announcement was met with equal parts joy and sadness from students and their parents. Triad Golf Today and Triangle Golf Today will host a golf tournament on Aug. 2 at Devils Ridge in Holly Springs to honor the two award-winning golf instructors. Details on that event will be available in the coming weeks. Over the last decade, Lerner and Bounds have placed more than 50 golfers in college and influenced countless lives. It’s not uncommon for the Dona Lerner Golf Academy to teach 35 lessons a day while embracing its motto of “Hard Work Pays Off.” “A lot of my players will stay in touch with me from a coaching perspective, helping them with their heads and understanding golf, but I am hoping I will be able to walk away,” Lerner said. “But I will be honest, I anticipate several lesson inquires.” When asked, Bounds said she will not be changing her cell phone number. “I still want anyone who I ever taught to know I am there for them,” Bounds said. “I run our Early Starter Program and just the other day when we made the announcement of the retirement one parent told me ‘this is going to be so hard because my kid gets up at 8 o’clock in the morning and gets dressed and wants to know if he can go to the course, and the program doesn’t even start for them until 2 p.m.’ For a 3- or 4-year old to be that excited to come and learn, now that’s very rewarding.” High school coaches and junior tournament spectators can tell if one of their players is a graduate of the Dona Lerner Golf Academy – toes on the line, shirt tucked in, emotions in check. “With Dona, it’s about more than golf, it’s about developing,” said Megan Kanaby of Chapel Hill, now a star player for Washington and Lee University who has been receiving lessons from Lerner for a remarkable 16 years. “Yes, she is the greatest at developing your golf game, but she teaches us that golf is a game of integrity, sportsmanship; a lot of the lessons you learn on the golf course can

be applied to other areas of life.” Both Lerner and Bounds plan to remain heavily involved in running tournaments, including the U.S. Kids World Championship qualifier events. “Dona Lerner is a true superstar and has an unmatched passion for teaching the game of golf,” said Peter Stilwell, President of Tarheel Communications Solutions and the marketing and operations arm for U.S. Kids in Pinehurst. “Her drive and dedication to introduce, improve and perfect the golf swings of her students is amazing, and growing the game of golf is part of her DNA.” “When I became a golf professional all I wanted to do was help families carve out time together using golf as a vehicle,” Lerner said. “Everyone told me I would be poor, and now 23 years later everybody wants to know the secret.” Bounds, who as a youth caddied for her father at a local Laurinburg course, played on the first women’s golf team at N.C. State, and was an accomplished amateur golfer prior to turning pro. She played on seven Southeastern Women’s Amateur teams, representing North Carolina in the six-state event. Bounds was also ranked in the top 10 female amateurs in the state by the CGA for a decade, winning the 1986 World Golf Championship. Her love for the game blossomed under the tutelage of Hall of Famer Peggy Kirk Bell at Pine Needles Resort, where Bounds spent several years as an intern. “I talked to coach Bell about going on Tour and what I needed to do, but it was just financially impossible so I went into the working world,” Bounds said. Meanwhile, Lerner’s first love was horses and she was a world-class rider before breaking her back in a fall in competition in Canada at the age of 14. After a stint as a golf instructor, she landed in the automobile glass replacement business for 18 years from 1981-1998 before launching her “second” teaching career. “I traveled 37 weeks a year and it was a very grueling job,” Lerner said of her life before the Dona Lerner Golf Academy. “I used to have to look at the license plate on the rental car to see what state I was in. I remember calling my dad from Colorado Springs and telling him I was done, that I was going to retire and was going to pursue the LPGA – and then I held the phone away from my ear

because I was making a lot of money and I thought he was going to rip me. But I heard – ‘It’s about damn time.’ The rest is history.” Lerner, who launched her academy at The Preserve at Jordan Lake before moving to Brier Creek Country Club, and Bounds had been friends for years before connecting on a business level in 2009. “When my business career came to an end I came to Dona and asked what I could do because I didn’t want to go back to a cubicle,” Bounds said. “So we set out a path to get my Class A Professional teaching certificate.” Business partnerships can often be difficult, but Lerner and Bounds feed off each other’s strengths, and seldom, if ever, cross into each other’s territory. “In our partnership we have a very clear division of labor and we never overlap each other, we never compete with each other, we’re on the same page. I am the admin, I am the ops, I am the marketing, the strategic face, and Kathy is the behind-the-scenes, organizer, coordinator, get-it-done, hard worker, physical – she does all the things I’m not good at. Together we could really run the world,” Lerner said. “So, together we just trust one another, we talk about everything we’re going to do in a process. We recently had a 190-player event in Southern Pines, and we were absolutely 100 percent on the same page about it all. Our events run smoothly because we don’t compete with each other. We get there and we both go in our different directions and at the end of the weekend it’s all done.” With everything firing on all cylinders as golf interest skyrocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the two will walk away knowing they built a lasting legacy. However, Lerner remembers the early struggles establishing a foothold in the market. “I remember meeting with a couple of directors of golf asking for a position as outside staff and I was told I would have to learn how to get up at Dark 30 and go to bed at Dark 30, and they thought I was too soft to do that. But (professional) Fran James gave me a job at the Golf Center (in Durham) and that’s where it all started. She was wonderful and very supportive of me. From there things evolved and I went to the Preserve. I went to everything I could go to – every Boys Club, every Girls Club, every youth group, every YMCA – everything, just to get out there because I always wanted to teach families and kids. The wall in the DLGA office is covered with a massive amount of awards and honors that these two professional teachers have garnered. Both are LPGA Class A members, US Kids directors, Master US Kids teachers, LPGA/USGA site directors and North Carolina high school golf coaches. Lerner’s accomplishments range from prep coach of the year to LPGA Southeast Teacher of the Year with national honors to being named the 2017 National LPGA Junior Leader of the Year, as well as a Top 100 LPGA instructor. “Here we are 23 years later and we’ve made a little bit of a footprint,” Lerner said. “It is because we had a vision and we never, ever waivered from it. To this day it is still my vision, and even though we’re going to walk away from the lessons and coaching business, we are not going to walk away from the tournament business. We are still going to watch these kids that we started and spent so much time with and their families, we’re going to watch them grow and develop. That’s the reward.” Well done ladies, well done. U.S. Junior Amateur first in a series of USGA championships in Sandhills

he list of champions from prestigious tournaments staged at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst dating to the early 1970s is beyond impressive. That list includes Jack Nicklaus, Ben Crenshaw, Hal Sutton and current club member and PGA Tour star Webb Simpson. Is the next winner at the 73rd U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in late July at CCNC destined to be golf’s next big thing? We’ll see, but the first in a series of USGA championships will be staged July 19-24 with an expanded field of 264 players at the private club’s Dogwood and Cardinal layouts. This elite junior championship, which will include golfers from at least 16 foreign countries along with local club member and reigning 4-A state champion Jackson Van Paris, is a prelude to the 2022 U.S. Women’s Open at Pine Needles and the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. 10

The winner of the grueling two days of stroke play and then six matches required to be crowned the U.S. Junior Amateur champion will secure a spot on the 2022 U.S. Open and bragging rights as one of the best junior golfers in the world. “This is one of the greatest championships in junior golf because of its remarkable championship history, it takes place at golf’s grandest venues, and it’s considered the U.S. Open of junior golf,” said Greg Sanfilippo, U.S. Junior Amateur Championship Director. “There are 57 sectional qualifying sites, nearly 3,400 entries and only 264 players will earn a spot through qualifying,” added Sanfilippo. “That’s not a great percentage, so the players who earn their way here have really earned it. We’re not an invitational; we let players earn their way into this championship.” The Dogwood course, renovated in 2016 by Greensboro-based architect Kris Spence, is ranked the third-best layout in North Carolina, while the Cardinal is ranked 16th. The field was set to be

expanded by more than 100 golfers last year at Inverness, but COVID-19 cancelled that championship, so CCNC will be the first location to field 264 competing juniors. “We came up with a Plan A two years ago and well, here comes COVID, so all of the sudden we have no template to go by at Inverness, which was going to have the first expanded field. All the sudden we’re pivoting into Plan B and asking committee chairs to come up with a doable plan. And nobody grumbled,” said Robby Bennett, general chairman of the championship. “What comes with the expanded field is finding a site with two golf courses that support a USGA championship test, and there is great infrastructure within the grounds here at CCNC and we find two championship ready golf courses,” added Sanfilippo. “Both are remarkable and they will challenge these players. The USGA will strike a balance of tough yet fair test of golf through our presentation of rough management, course firmness, hole

locations, teeing ground locations. This will be the most comprehensive test within its demographics.” Simpson won the Southern Amateur here in 2007, and decorated junior player Van Paris comes in as one of the favorites considering his course knowledge and overall skill level. “It’s obviously exciting to have somebody from the host club playing in the event,” Sanfilippo said. “There are going to be 263 other players that Jackson will be thinking about but there is an element of the excitement, not only for the club but for the local media as well. “Jackson has played a lot of golf. He has been under pressure before and he has won AJGA major championships, so it’s not anything that he hasn’t walked yet. I think he’ll enjoy it.” Former U.S. Junior Amateur winners Buddy Baker (1958) and John Crooks (1967) said local knowledge is very important. Young Guns from page 10 Andy North for his title and is the longtime men’s and women’s golf coach at Campbell University in Buies Creek. “They need to walk around and look at the courses because the yardage listed for the courses, especially going into the greens, on most holes you are hitting uphill so they will play longer,” Baker said. “And on some of the greens if you hit it too far to the back you are in real trouble. You need to make sure you know where to hit it, but more importantly where not to hit it.” “This is one of the greatest golf courses in the United States,” Crooks added about the Dogwood layout. “When you are playing a great golf course that means every pin placement is going to require a different strategy. The person who can come in here and get comfortable, the person who can be the most observant during their practice rounds and absorb all the nuisances of the course, will have a good chance.” Previous winners who have also won at least one U.S. Open include Johnny Miller, Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth. “At the end of the day we want the

players to work through mental and physical situations on the golf course,” Sanfilippo said. “Being in July, it will be the heat and also when players have an opportunity to score or be defensive do they execute as intended or do they fail to do so.

“And part of the player preparation we look for is whether they’ve studied the architecture of every golf hole. Did that player understand the turf grass, the firmness, the weather impacting conditions? What is unique here is we have zoysia grass on the fairways on the

Champion Hills synonymous with four-season golf, elevated lifestyle By DAVID DROSCHAK

all of fame golf course architect Tom Fazio loves to rattle off his favorite features of mountain golf in North Carolina -hills, terrain, elevation, framing, definition, trees, natural streams, waterfalls. “All of these things come with the territory and then it’s just a matter of how you fit it in, how you make it work,” Fazio said. One of Fazio’s “early designs” was Champion Hills outside of Hendersonville, a 6,527-yard layout situated at elevations that reach to 3,000 feet yet the area retains a temperate four-season playability that has allowed the private club established in 1988 to gain in popularity over the last decade. Course executives have noted a recent trend where dozens of folks have sold their second homes in warmer climates and moved to Champion Hills permanently, while others from out-of-state have been lured to the club by its spirit of community, stunning scenery and spectacular signature Fazio golf. “People coming here are golf fanatics and looking to come to this fabulous town in western North Carolina that has a great reputation for a place to be, a great place to retire and enjoy all the environments that are here,” said Fazio, who still maintains an office in a building he purchased along Main Street. “We used to call it the ‘offseason’ and now we call it the winter season and the summer season,” said Champion Hills general manager Dana Schultz. “If the weather is good for a 10-day stretch it’s not uncommon that we’ll have a chili cookoff or something like that to get people out golfing. Fazio hand-picked the property that would comprise his “home course” layout that is affectionately called his “Mountain Masterpiece.” 14

“Fazio’s big demand was to touch it before any real estate touched it, so he got to lay out the course the way he saw it and that was very unusual for the day,” said Heather Myers, director of membership at Champion Hills. “This is one of his original courses and Tom has a lot of passion for Hendersonville and this golf course, and it shows every time he is here,” added Schultz. “He raised his kids in Hendersonville. Prospects know that and they are often reminded that it’s home for Tom.” Hendersonville, with a population of around 15,000, is located about 100 miles from Charlotte, 170 miles from Atlanta and 250 miles from Raleigh in a quaint corner of western North Carolina that is a peaceful throwback to yesteryear with a downtown filled with culinary treats, craft beer and delicious desserts. Myers notes that 63 percent of Champion Hills members and residents are now classified as year-round, compared to around 40-42 percent a decade ago. “We do have bent grass greens, tees and fairways so the golf course is pretty all year long,” Myers said. “The change in year-round members has been pretty cool to see. That doesn’t mean our people don’t travel in January and February, but they are gone for just a couple of weeks and then they come back. It is never really fully quiet here.” The expansive clubhouse, sitting at one of the highest points on the property, features breathtaking, panoramic views of the surrounding mountain range, and farm-to-table food from local farms. “This view does not get old -- not in any season, not in any weather,” Myers said. “Even when it is foggy, and it rolls out it looks kind of mystical. Every season is perfect here.” “For me, designing Champion Hills was like second nature, like taking candy from a baby,” Fazio said of the prime property and his affinity for designing mountain courses.

Greensboro golfer doubles up on aces at Bryan Park By STEVE WILLIAMS

ordon Johnson had five holes-inone in his long golf career when he teed it up on May 26. He left the Players Course at Bryan Park with seven. It was an incredible day on the links – never before seen at the popular 36-hole venue that opened in 1974. The 68-year old Greensboro resident, who has been golfing since he was 5 years old, starred in high school at Grimsley and went on to earn NAIA All-America honors while playing collegiately at Lenior-Rhyne. His first ace came during his college years at the original Rock Barn course in Hickory. He also remembered others at Tobacco Road, Oak Island and Olde Point. So it wasn’t anything to get too excited about when he made his sixth career ace on Bryan Park’s fifth hole with a 9-iron from 142 yards. But when he found his ball in the cup on No. 17 to give him two aces on the day – now that was a little different. “I was absolutely stunned,” Johnson said. “I had heard about it happening before when I worked out at Forest Oaks. That’s incredible.” While he saw the ball roll in the cup on No. 5, the ace on No. 17 with a 5-iron from 171 yards was a surprise. “We thought George Hannaum had made a hole-in-one because he hit a good shot. But when we got up there to the green, we saw his ball just to the left of the hole. Then I saw where my ball mark was, I knew it had to be in the hole.” Chip Beard, the third member of the group that day, encouraged Johnson to keep the ball and have it mounted or framed. But that would be something new for Johnson as he hadn’t kept mementoes from his previous aces. “We were really pretty subdued,” Beard said of the stunning turn of events. “A lot of people go bananas for something like that but we were just like ‘damn, another one.’” Johnson capped off his round with a birdie on the par-4 18th for a 74. “That’s always a tough hole for me so it was nice to finish 1-3.” A triple bogey on No. 7 kept him from breaking par. Johnson, who shot a second-round 63 at Green Valley Country Club while winning the Greensboro City Amateur in 1975, says he’s just an occasional golfer these days although he works part-time at Greensboro Country Club. 16

Gordon Johnson’s feat on May 26 at Bryan Park was the fourth time we’ve reported it happening at a Triad golf course since the magazine was founded. And we’re in our 28th year.
