James Dodson’s Farewell to Golf

By DAVID DROSCHAK hile it may be true people don’t read much anymore, they do read James Dodson. So it’s noteworthy that the accomplished awardwinning author from North Carolina has just released his 14th book, titled “The Range Bucket List.” It consists of 21 chapters, all of which can be read independently, and includes an interesting conversation at a Charlotte course between Dodson and Donald Trump. “That was four years ago and it didn’t raise a red flag at all with me, didn’t think twice about it,” Dodson said of now President Trump. “I congratulated him because four years

ago nobody was buying golf courses much less refurbishing them.” Dodson’s father was a newspaper man, and in college Dodson drifted into that field. “And I never looked back,” he said, becoming a two-time winner of the USGA’s Herbert Warren Wind Award for the best golf book of the year. “In my case, this book is my love letter to golf,” Dodson said. “I had the luckiest career anybody could have. For nearly 30 years I got to run around the golf world and meet wonderful people. This is really my love poem to golf, to great characters – some of them are well known and some of them are not. I hope people see universality in this book.”

The “everyman’s golf writer,” Dodson said this may be his last golf book. “It’s time to exit stage left,” the 64-year-old Dodson said. However, he’s not going to stop producing books. “I went to Africa with plant hunters, I love horticulture, so that may be a book,” he said. “But my next book is going to be about the Great Wagon Road, which is the road that brought all the Scots, Irish, Germans, Moravians and Quakers to North Carolina from Pennsylvania. I hope to drive it this summer and write a book about it.” Golf is the subject of nine of his 14 books. The Range Bucket List sells for $27 as a hardback. And just minutes away is Chimney Rock State Park, one of the state’s top tourist attractions, in addition to the surrounding Chimney Rock village, which is dominated by craft shops and restaurants. Apple Valley and Bald Mountain championship courses offer different layouts but similar feels of challenge, playability and visual pleasures produced by the surrounding water, foliage and mountains. Centrally located about an hour southeast of Asheville and two hours fromCharlotte and Winston-Salem, the golf courses are about a mile apart - Bald Mountain is inside the gate and the amenities circle, and Apple Valley is just down the road. Over the last year or so, a lot of work has been done to both courses, including some improved bunkering, a lot of pruning and a general sprucing up to give the course a cleaner look.

There are new golf carts on both courses - Bald Mountain's fleet includes USB ports, while carts at Apple Valley feature cushioned seats, bottled water, towel service and a GPS system to provide yardages and detailed drawings of each hole. "This past offseason, we took a hard look at what the golf courses needed and really started putting a lot of work and extra people on both so that our homeowners and our guests will be pleased with what they see," said Adam Bowles, Rumbling Bald's golf operations manager. "We moved the Legends restaurant across the street (from the Bald Mountain pro shop) in our old Lake View Restaurant, and it's got a theatre room, pool tables, games and that amazing view. Pinecrest captures third straight 4-A golf crown

t’s difficult to say which made Pinecrest High School men’s golf coach Lynne Beechler prouder – winning a third straight 4-A prep championship or seeing her son mobbed by teammates on the 18th green following his individual championship. “I have been so fortunate to have been able to coach him this whole time,” said Beechler, the mother and coach of senior A.J. Beechler, who carded a pair of 68s on Pinehurst No. 6 to win the 4-A championship by one shot over Matt Sharpstene of T.C. Roberson. “Players like Eric Bae and Josh Martin were really great players for him to look up to. He has really been working on his putting. His tempo is just right there. And he has really been focused this year – even though he has a girlfriend.”

Spoken like a true mother. The coach received quite an early Mother’s Day present as the Patriots won their third straight 4-A crown and fifth overall in the last decade. Beechler, who will play college golf at North Carolina-Greensboro, joins Bae (2015) and Jack Fields (2008) as individual champions from Pinecrest. Last year, Pinecrest defeated

Charlotte Myers Park by one shot, but there was no such late drama this time around, even though the Patriots trailed Green Hope by one shot heading into Day Two, with Myers Park another shot back. Pinecrest shot 10 strokes better in Round Two and won going away, beating Green Hope by 13 shots on a cool and damp day. “We didn’t give them a number to shoot because we’ve had confidence in their scores all season,” coach Beechler

said. “They had the lowest average of any Pinecrest team we’ve had. They were very relaxed when they came out.” “You know, repeating is hard to do,” added A.J. Beechler. “All the other teams keep getting better every year, too.” R.J. Reynolds was the best team from the Triad, but finished 40 shots off the pace in sixth. The top individual finisher from the area was Brandon Einstein of West Forsyth,

who carded rounds of 69 and 74 to tie for fourth at 1-under – seven shots behind Beechler. Einstein started the final round just one shot off the lead. Einstein’s team didn’t fare as well as the Titans finished last in the field. Beechler led by one shot going into the final round and in the end needed to get up-and-down after hitting his approach to No. 18 over the green. He chipped to 5 feet and sank the putt that he needed to avoid a playoff. “I took my time – I wasn’t going to miss that putt,” he said. Beechler also chipped in for a birdie on the 13th hole to help propel him to his 4-under-par round. “I was talking to the Myers Park coach and said, ‘You know, A.J. makes a lot of these’ and right then he hits the shot and it goes in,” said co-coach Rich Wainwright. “He got off the ground when that went in.” “That’s one of his Continued on page 11 www.triadgolf.com

In the end, it was a total team effort of consistency for Pinecrest, with junior Ben Crow, who has also verbally committed to UNC-G, stepping up to card rounds of 72 and 71 to tie for fourth, while Drew Viney (T15th) and Attie Giles (T20th) provided grinding, solid rounds. “The team worked hard with all the drills we do all year,” coach Beechler said. “Our favorite is they all can’t leave until they make a consecutive putt. So they have to make 10 putts in a row or they have to start all over again. That focuses them on the hole.” “We’ve had good teams, and we’ve had good players, but I’ve never seen a team shoot so well as a team,” added Wainwright. “This team just could go low.” Crow made a 25-foot putt on the 16th green, while Viney sank a 12-footer after changing putting grips for eagle on the 15th to help support Beechler’s remarkable play. “Coming down the stretch coach just kept smiling at us and said ‘Just keep doing what you’re doing,’” Crow said. “There was no stress at all. We were really comfortable with what we were doing and we just executed.” As the players hugged each other and offered fist bumps, Wainwright broke out a few sleeves of balls that had a simple word stamped in black -- Threepeat. The players were excited to accept his offering. “We started that last year with repeat,” he said. “What is next, fourpeat? I think I’m just going to put MJ on the balls for Michael Jordan. It gives them something to shoot for.” “Knowing the psychological part plays into it, too,” added coach Beechler. “Just like each student, each athlete is an individual and you have to know what they need at a certain time, when to back away and when to push.” And when to just be a mom. “She’s being modest when she talks about A.J.,” Wainwright said. “He’s a heck of a player.”

Burlington Williams finishes second in 3-A prep championship

he Burlington Williams team and Parker Chavis of South Rowan made strong runs at winning state titles in the 3-A men’s high school golf championship. But both had to settle for second place finishes at Foxfire Golf Club & Resort. Williams improved by 21 shots in the second round of the 36-hole event. The Bulldogs shot 303 in the second round, after opening with a 324, to finish 12 shots behind winner Marvin Ridge. Williams was led by freshman Garrett Clark, who tied for the best round of the tournament with a 70 in the second round. He managed that despite bogeying the last hole. He shot 79-70 for a 147 total that also gave him a tie for fifth place in the individual standings. “I didn't play that well the first day and I left a few out there in the second round,” said Clark, who made five birdies in his final round. “But all in all, I can't complain. Making the state tournament was the goal as a team. We wanted to win it but we wanted, at least, to come in the top three.” Senior Walker Beck shot 154, junior Grayson Butler had a 167 and senior Kaison King and junior Harrison Stuart each shot 173 to tie for the fourth team score. “We played extremely well,” said Williams coach Tommy Cole. “Three of my players cut nine shots off their scores from the first round.” The Bulldogs trailed first-round leader Tuscola by 12 shots. “You don't want to get too far behind the first day,” Cole said. “We saw the scores and they were awfully high (after the first round). We were back 12 shots and it might have been too much. I told the boys, ‘if we don't win it, let's finish second.’ We threw a solid number out there at 303.” Cole was effusive in his praise of Clark, who will lead a strong nucleus back next year for the Bulldogs. “He's got a bright, bright future,” Cole said. “He has a great swing, great technique and great fundamentals. He's going to get stronger attitude-wise and mentally tougher. He's just a baby right now but he's going to be a player. He's a talent.” Cole just finished his 33rd year as the golf coach at Williams and called himself

“the Mike Krzyzewski of high school golf.” He has won three state championships and finished second seven times. “I've been blessed,” said Cole, who also has won 24 conference titles. “There's not a whole lot I do. I get them to the golf course about an hour ahead of time.” He also jokingly explained how he puts a team together. “The first cut is if I beat them they don't make the team,” he said. “The second cut is I just play with their mind and try to get them mentally tough. It's a great game but it can rip you apart if you let it.” Chavis proved he was mentally strong in his bid to win the state individual title. He led after the first round with an evenpar 72. Then he was locked in a tense 5-hour battle with two playing partners in the second round. Chavis, Parker Boyette of Wilson Fike and Dalton Mauldin of Lee County were tied for the lead on the par-3 17th tee. But Chavis fell one shot behind when he missed a short par putt.

“I had a lot of nerves on the tee and I hit a bad 5-iron short right,” he said. “I chipped to 5 feet but I missed the putt.” Chavis knew he needed a birdie on the 18th hole. He hit a 3-wood off the tee of the 390-yard hole in the first round but this time he went with driver, risking hitting it through the fairway of the dogleg. “I was trying to put pressure on the other guys,” he said. “I put it in the fairway and had a good number of 145 yards with a 9-iron.” Chavis hit a good shot to about 10 feet but he missed the birdie putt. He ended up tied for second with Mauldin when Boyette birdied the last hole to win by two shots. Chavis shot 72-73 for a 1-over 145. “Parker played the best he has all year,” said South Rowan coach Steve Beaver. “It was so exciting to watch three good players go at it like that in the second round. Nobody ever got more than two shots ahead. It was fun to watch but it was also nerve wracking. That was high school golf at its best.”

Chavis said it was fun to play in the group. “I had a lot of pressure but it was very enjoyable,” he said. “They are both good players. I really wanted to win it. But all you can do is get into contention and see what happens.” Chavis managed a 72 in the first round despite making a double bogey and two bogeys on the par-5 holes. But he balanced that out with five birdies, including three in a row on holes 15 through 17. Chavis had only two birdies in the final round but one of them came on a 40-foot putt on the par-5 12th hole that he called, “the biggest putt of the tournament for me.” Chavis will continue his golf career in the fall at Pfeiffer University. “Pfeiffer is getting a better golfer than they think they are getting,” Beaver said. “Parker is an extremely hard worker. He doesn't play any other sports. He is dedicated to golf. The Mustangs shot 317-316 for 633 to finish 18 shots behind winner Marvin Ridge. Nick Lyerly, the 2015 individual state champion, led the Mustangs with a 150 total. Other scorers were William Garland (152), Bryson Sprinkle (154) and Alex Miller (179).

n 2-A at Beacon Ridge, Wilkes Central ran away from the competition to repeat as state champions, beating Lake Norman Charter by 32 shots. Four Wilkes Central players finished in the top 11, including Chandler Metz, who shot a second-round 73 to tie for second behind individual champion Logan McNeely of NewtonConover. McNeely trailed Metz by two shots heading into the final round, but was able to card a 70 – the low round of the championship – to capture the title. South Stokes came in third in the team race, while Forbush finished fourth. At the Country Club of Whispering Pines, Dylon Wooten of Alleghany came in second place in the 1-A championship, losing out by two shots to champion Nick Smith of Union Academy. The 1-A team title went to Lincoln Charter, which took a

12-stroke lead over Community School of Davidson after the first round and were never threatened, winning its first state golf title by 13 shots. Lincoln Charter was led by Justin Morgan who fired a 5-over 149 on his way to a third place finish. Meanwhile, in the independent schools championships, Michael Sanders of Cannon School birdied the second playoff hole to defeat Ryan Gerard of Raleigh Ravenscroft after each had finished 36 holes at 8-under-par at Whispering Pines for the 3-A title. Ravenscoft captured the team title behind Gerard and Quinn Riley, shot 69-70 to come in third. St. David’s captured the 2-A crown, while Jackson Van Paris of O’Neal School shot 70-67 to win the individual title by eight shots. In 1-A, Burlington School was tied with University Christian after the first round, but had to settle for second, losing the team title by three shots. Upstart Aggies surprise coach with late-season surge

orth Carolina A&T women’s golf coach Richard Watkins reluctantly accepted pats on the back this season as he launched the school’s first golf program in 125 years. Forgive Watkins for being a little hard on himself and his team – he wants to win like most coaches – even though the odds against this group were longer than a 600-yard par-5. Golf is difficult enough, let alone starting a program from scratch. “Everybody at A&T was all happy and very, very pleased, and some of our competitors were a little surprised by our play, but at the end of the day the only six people that weren’t extraordinary happy were the five golfers and their coach,” Watkins said. “We just weren’t as excited as everybody else was. We didn’t win; we want to do better.” Success is relative, so looking back on the season the A&T women actually accomplished a ton after finishing dead last in their first tournament, eventually coming in second at the MEAC Championship, and then recently placing fourth in the 2017 PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship in Florida. “I got very, very fortunate this year because I recruited five young ladies that weren’t afraid of hard work,” Watkins said. “And that’s probably the biggest tribute I can pay to them. If they missed practice it was because of a class or lab. They worked.” Watkins fielded a team of just five women this inaugural season, not because he couldn’t get players to join the program but because he wanted to build a program, not just start one. “I set it up that way,” Watkins said of his small roster. “I was trying to build some classes instead of just going out and getting a bunch of freshmen, and then you’ve got what you’ve got for four years. I just didn’t want to operate like that. I have two girls that will be seniors next year, three sophomores and I’m bringing in one junior college player and one freshman. And I’ve already identified

four players for the following year.” The Aggies set up shop at Bryan Park and Forest Oaks golf courses this past season, and then quietly went to work under the radar. “Both of those places and the people at those places have been tremendous,” Watkins said. “They were so good and my hat’s off to them, they really extended themselves and welcomed us with open arms and honestly treated us like we had been there for years.” At the Starmount Forest Fall Classic last October, the Aggies were 111 shots off the pace, finishing 11th out of 11 teams. “I wasn’t overly concerned that we finished last,” Watkins said. “I just wanted to use that strong field and those greens at Starmount as measuring sticks. They were perfect greens but they were like putting on your hardwood floor in your den. When you can’t stop uphill putts you are in trouble. They were the fastest greens we faced all year, but after those we

weren’t scared.” J.C. Harvison shot three straight 77s and produced the program’s first-ever top 10 individual finish in that event. Then when junior Sofia Alvarez finished third in the next spring event Watkins knew he had two good players. However, the rest of the team was a work in progress. No more so than Jocelyn Andrews of Southern Alamance High School. The freshman was a good prep player, but Watkins immediately knew Andrews was going to face a stern test at the college level. “So I did something to her that I promised that I wouldn’t ever do,” he said. “I just started in the middle of competition changing and revamping her golf swing. That was a compete disservice. I set up her up for failure. And she struggled early, and a lot of her struggles can be attributed to my decision. You can’t make changes to your swing and try to compete, too. But she struggled

through it, stuck with it and just got better and better.” How much better? Well, after not breaking 80 all season, Andrews carded an opening-round 73 at the minority national championship. She also was a factor three weeks earlier at the MEAC Championship. “The national minority kind of caught me off guard just because a couple of young ladies had struggled early and were making improvements but they were baby steps,” Watkins said. What was the season’s most satisfying moment? “There was a pretty good list of them,” Watkins said. “But honestly, the feeling of accomplishment that I got from seeing the girls when they realized they had finished second in the conference. We knew that we should be the second-best team in the MEAC but to go out and actually do it and be what you are supposed to be and move forward, and pulling for each other, was satisfying.” Watkins is a longtime coach and employee of A&T, having worked for the school since 1992. He’s a graduate of High Point College and played on the golf team while in school there. Now, he’s crafting his men’s golf roster for its inaugural season this fall. Watkins is going about it in the same meticulous manner, refusing to settle for par. “It hasn’t been easy, but part of the reason it hasn’t been easy has been me,” he said. “I could have put a men’s team together in a week if I would have just taken all the interest forms, all the phone calls and all the emails I got of kids wanting to play or walk-on. That’s not what I want. I have already commitments from a transfer from Charleston Southern and one from Mount Olive, and a freshman from California.” After a whirlwind recruiting trip up the East Coast from Florida to Georgia and then to the state championships in Pinehurst, Watkins was recently able to play a round of golf with buddies and exhale at Gillespie Golf Course in Greensboro. But he was back working the phones the next morning. “I’ve loved every minute of it,” Watkins said of starting two golf teams from scratch. www.triadgolf.com

Oak Hollow: An early Pete Dye design worth seeking out

By JOHN BRASIER wned and operated by the city of High Point, Oak Hollow Golf Course shares a legacy with the likes of TPC Sawgrass, Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course, The Honors Course and Harbour Town — it was designed by famed architect Pete Dye. But tee times at Oak Hollow are much easier to make, and much easier to afford, if you get one. Completed in 1972, three years after Dye made a name for himself by designing Harbour Town — longtime home of the PGA Tour’s Heritage Classic — with some input from Jack Nicklaus, Dye laid out a beauty along Oak Hollow Lake. In addition to eight water holes, Dye utilized many of his famous trademarks, most notably small, undulating and peninsular greens, railroad ties and a memorable island tee. Though Oak Hollow isn’t as famous as Dye’s layouts that play host to annual PGA Tour events or occasional major championships its famous pedigree attracts players from throughout the country. “Certainly Pete Dye is famous and some golfers come here just because they want to play his golf courses,” said Steve High, director of golf at Oak Hollow and sister city course Blair Park. “We get people from everywhere -- people on golf vacations to Pinehurst, Myrtle Beach or Florida stop here on their way. We’re almost like a tourist area. We get a lot of people from all over the state, and from all over the Southeast. “If you’re a senior playing on a weekday, where else can you play a Pete Dye course for $24?” And High Point has kept its Dye design pretty much

intact, High said, pointing out that the biggest change he knows of is the replacement of a few weathered railroad ties. You don’t have to be 55 to get a great deal. The standard weekday price for greens fee and cart is $32 and $39 before noon on weekends. Walkers can play 18 holes for $17 on weekdays. And the rates drop in December, January and February. On the course, there is one major difference between Oak Hollow and some of Dye’s most dastardly difficult designs. Oak Hollow, which plays to par 72, isn’t extremely long, measuring only 6,564 yards from the back tees. But the small, sloping putting surfaces, water hazards and undulating terrain add difficulty that can’t be appreciated on the scorecard. And the challenges presented by the small, bentgrass greens are increased by the shortage of easy pin placements. Approaches and chips left above the hole can often result in three putts. “We have small greens with a lot of undulation,” High said. “It’s very target-oriented.” Yet Oak Hollow’s bent greens are smooth and true, providing good opportunities on uphill or flat putts. “We’re very comfortable with how they are now,” High said. Oak Hollow isn’t taxing throughout. At least two of the par-4s are reachable from the second tees. The two par-5s on the front nine measure fewer than 500 yards from the tips. As at many courses, local knowledge helps at Oak Hollow, especially at No. 2, a short par-5, where many players will hit drives over a hill, leaving only a mid-iron to a tiny green only 11 yards deep and protected by a pair of bunkers and sharp drop-off to the left. The imposing target makes laying up a reasonable option from less than 200 yards out. Oak Hollow Lake dominates the landscape, making its first appearance at No. 4 with a modest carry over the water required to the 170-yard par-3. The short par-5 fifth forces a carry over the water off the tee then stretches slightly left along the shore, with the lake eventually wrapping around the back of the green.

The signature hole is the par-4 sixth hole, which presents a challenging drive from an island tee from the tips, and a heroic opportunity to drive the green from the other sets of tees, as it bends left around the lake. From the 420-yard back markers on the tiny island, players must avoid the water on the left and trees on the right to leave a mid- to short-iron approach to the putting surface. From the second tee blocks, players have the option of hitting an iron or fairway wood straight down the fairway, drawing a drive around a portion of the dogleg or taking direct aim over the lake — often into a prevailing breeze — to the green about 250 yards away. Turning away from the lake at Nos. 7 and 8, the course provides a classic Dye look at No. 9, a short par-4 with fairway tiers separated by railroad tees. Drives left of the target drop to a lowered landing area and an approach likely blocked by trees. The back nine is longer and slightly more difficult from the start, a 588yard monster that forces players to hit two solid shots to have a clear approach as the hole bends sharply left over the final 100 yards. No. 11 is perhaps the most difficult hole on the course. Oak Hollow Lake extends down the entire left side on the par-4, which measures 437 yards from the back tees. Trees pinch in from the right at the green, which is only 14 paces deep. Going for the green in two at the 526-yard 15th hole takes steely nerves and superior skill with a fairway wood or long-iron. The small green sits upon a plateau with the left side of the putting surface perched precariously above a steep drop into a gully. At 17, players can try their luck at reaching the green 300 yards off the tee. But the putting surface is only 14 paces across, making it extremely rare for drives to come to rest on the putting surface. A long, accurate drive is a must on the finishing hole, a 448-yard par-4 bending left as the green approaches. Respectable drives to the left side of the fairway can be blocked from the green.

New Pudding Ridge owner turns dream into reality

By ROBERT KIMBALL ome of us dream of a day when we can retire and live on a golf course. One man is doing just that; except he’s not retired and his definition of living on the course might seem a bit different from most. Only 10 minutes off Interstate 40 sits Pudding Ridge Golf Course. Golfers have been playing this Davie County layout since 1994, and now there is new life at the course. Liked the bentgrass greens? How about the fairways? Nice sand in the bunkers? What about that wicked pin placement on 12? George Waranowitz is happy to hear all about it. In fact, you probably will see him on the course, no matter when or what day you play. He is the superintendent, mower, sprayer, hole cutter, turf grass expert, mechanic, weather forecaster, customer service representative -- and by the way -new owner of Pudding Ridge. “I’m the jack of all trades and master of none,” he joked. Waranowitz (pronounced War-ano-witz) simply goes by George around the clubhouse. “I don’t expect anyone to correctly pronounce my name; I feel a bit like Coach K sometimes,” he laughed. Waranowitz and his business partner bought the course in April 2017 and he has

made his home two miles away. “This is a great area out here,” he said. “I love the open spaces and fields that surround the property.” He has since jumped into his work, arriving at sunrise often to twilight. Ten-to12 hour days Monday through Friday are the norm; Saturday and Sunday he’ll knock off around lunchtime depending on what is going on. Sure, the hours are long, but the tradeoff is good for Waranowitz. He can do something he loves and make a living doing it. “We didn’t buy this course because we’re millionaire investors looking to make a big profit. We bought it because we want to run a golf course and love the work involved with it. I can sum it up with the motto -- I love to work but I hate having a job. So, I don’t consider this my job but my lifestyle,” he said. George comes to Pudding Ridge by way of Southern Maryland, where as a student at the University of Maryland’s turf grass school, he first worked on a sod farm that was turned into a driving range and par-3 course. He pretty much single-handedly oversaw the construction of the course, and grew to love caring for and managing the grounds. From there, he moved to Hilton Head in South Carolina to work for

a golf course construction company. The position included extended travel, and it was here he got a taste of the Triad area, when he was involved in the restoration of Lexington Golf Club in 2002. From there he moved to Savannah, Ga., for a non-golf related engineering job and finally back to Southern Maryland. His goal was to work for himself in the golf business and, after a deal fell through in Maryland, he scouted out potential sites in 2016. He focused on Pudding Ridge because he enjoyed the simplicity of it. “The course is simple in a good way. It’s pretty open and not overly challenging. It has good bones.” Tie that in with an already good flow of clientele and it was too good to pass on. “We felt we could attract Winston-Salem golf-

ers who were moving out towards the Clemmons area, and even some northern Charlotte demographics, and that puts us in a good location with potential.” Pudding Ridge plays to a maximum yardage of 6,813 with a slope of 133. The par-71 layout features a large pond in the middle of the course that comes into play on numerous holes, both on tee shots and approaches. Waranowitz is pleased with the current conditions, and plans to improve them over time. However, two weeks after he signed the ownership papers, the area experienced an extended period of rain. The creeks and ponds became flooded and many of the holes were saturated. “I was a little freaked out,” he said. “I thought we were going to lose some wood bridges and sustain damage to the course. It’s nice to have things back to the condition where we can perform daily maintenance.” Waranowitz was pleased with the current staff and kept them all on when he purchased the property, so the faces will be familiar to longtime guests. He is around all the time, but doesn’t see himself as a micro-manager. “I’m not a control freak, but as an owner-operator I like staying on top of things. There is always something I can be doing out here,” he said. The decision to uproot and move to Mocksville wasn’t taken lightly, but George admits it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of his family. His wife, Rebecca, a California native whom he met while working in Savannah, has been behind him the whole way. “She’s my rock, no doubt about it. Without her, this wouldn’t have happened,” he said. One of the fringe benefits of living so close to work, and being the boss, is every day his wife and two children come to the clubhouse for lunch with dad. “That really means a lot to me. It brings it all together.” So, what does he do when he’s not at work on the golf course? Does he actually play any golf? George laughs and says no he doesn’t play that much. “But, when I do play, I always like to play with a group. I enjoy the social aspect of the game. I am pretty much an average bogey golfer.”

Guilford runner-up in NCAA Division III Championship

uilford College finished its season on a roll. After 11th and 17th-place finishes in March events, and a 10th-of-15 mark in an early April tournament, the Quakers were slipping in the national rankings. But they finally put it all together by winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship in late April. That victory produced one of 33 automatic bids to the Division III national championship in mid-May. With only nine at-large bids available to round out the 42-team field, it was doubtful 19thranked Guilford would receive a ticket to the nationals without the ODAC title. Talk about taking advantage of an opportunity. Guilford narrowly missed bringing home a national championship, falling just two shots short of Wittenberg University in the four-day event at Mission Inn Resort in Florida. A first-round 300 left the Quakers in eighth place but they made a steady climb into contention with a 293-296293 effort. It took a dramatic finish by Wittenberg to lift the Ohio school to its first national title. The Tigers played the final two holes at 4-under while Guilford played the same stretch even par. Texas-Tyler ended third, six shots back of Guilford while top-ranked Huntingdon College of Alabama settled for a fourth-place tie with Greensboro College, 10 shots off Wittenberg’s pace. Methodist posted a tournament-best 288 to climb into seventh, giving N.C. three of the top seven teams. Guilford previously won NCAA Divison III titles in 2002 and 2005 and this was its third runner-up finish. The Quakers came up one shot short in both 2001 and 2010. Ty Palmer, a senior from Kernersville, closed with a an eagle on the par-4 16th and a birdie at the 18th for an even-par 72 to lead Guilford’s charge. Freshman Zachary Evans also matched par in the final round, sophomore Josh Hill shot 74 and Harrison Frye, a junior from High Point, posted 75. Palmer was the only Guilford player to have his score count all four days, a show of the team’s balance. Hill’s 12th was the best individual finish in the 26

215-man field. Palmer and freshman Kell Graham tied for 24th, Evans tied for 30th and Frye tied for 42nd. Palmer finished with a 75.6 career stroke average, 13th-best in school history. Addison Lambeth, who returned to college after a break for a five-year tour with the Marines, completed his brilliant two-year career at Huntingdon with a ninth-place finish. A year ago, Huntingdon and Lambeth were both runners-up in the NCAA championships. Lambeth tied for first individually but lost in a three-way playoff for the national title. A year after setting Huntingdon's NCAA-era scoring average record at 72.37, Lambeth improved it in 2017 with a 71.4 in 27 rounds. Greensboro College was led in the final round by Grant Powell, a freshman from Northwest Guilford. His 73 com-

bined with 74 by Sean O’Conner, 75 by Luke Grogan and 77 by Levi Grogan for the 299 total.

Carolina, Duke make NCAA field

Four ACC teams will be among the 30 who assemble for the NCAA Championship May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. The top five teams from each of six regionals played in mid-May advanced. North Carolina, standing eighth after 36 holes, fired a final round 277 and edged out Georgia Tech by one shot for the fifth spot out of the Stanford Regional. Freshman Austin Hitt shot 67 and juniors Ben Griffin and Jose Montaño added 69s to lead the Tar Heels’ rally. William Register, a junior from Burlington, had Carolina’s fourth score in the final round. His 2-over-par 72

came in grind-it-out fashion as he was 4 over after the first five holes. The Tar Heels will be making their first trip to the nationals since 2007. Duke placed second to LSU in the Baton Rouge Regional led by the play of sophomore Alex Smalley and freshman Chandler Eaton, who tied for third individually. Virginia also advanced out of the Baton Rouge regional with a fourth-place finish. Thomas Walsh, a sophomore from High Point, scored all three rounds for the Cavs and ended in a 17th-place tie individually. Clemson earned its spot with a tie for second in the College Grove Regional. Wake Forest narrowly missed advancing from the Austin Regional, ending sixth, four shots back of Arizona State. The Deacons will be represented individually by junior Will Zalatoris, who tied for fifth with 69-72-69.

that is easily obtained by caddies stepping off the measurements in pre-round preparations. Allowing the use of lasers would only ease the pre-round work by caddies. I don’t see the difference as far as legality is concerned. Again, I agree with you on the greenmapping issue. Reading a green is something that players and caddies should be required to figure out on their own. After all, they are the best in the world at this sort of thing. Well, all is not lost as you point out that the USGA is probably going to allow the laser and outlaw the green mapping. These guys today are so good in every phase of the game that they don’t really need any artificial help. It has gotten to the point that you expect a Tour player to hole every putt inside 15 feet. Meanwhile, let’s get back to that Fayetteville mumble you were talking about. I’ll have you know that my muttering comes from being born and raised on a farm near Chadbourn. First Tee, first ace go hand in hand for Sadie Mecham

adie Mecham has been playing golf for four years and signed up with First Tee of the Triad when she and her family moved to WinstonSalem from Virginia last summer. Now the First Tee regular has her first hole-inone. Playing in Tanglewood Park’s Par-3 series April 15, she aced the 15th hole on the par-3 course, using an 8-iron for the 70-yard shot. She knew it was a great shot, but she didn’t know it was a hole-in-one until they found the ball at the bottom of the cup. Her father, Brad, was on hand to witness the shot. “Wow! I got a hole-in-one,” Sadie said. “It was neat to be there with my dad because we could talk about it and celebrate together.” “The green is elevated so we didn’t see it go in, but I knew it was a great shot when she hit it,” Brad said. “When we got up there, one of the parents said, ‘I think it’s in the hole!’ Sadie was really quite speechless; we both kept smiling for the rest of the round.” Sadie, a fourth grader at Whitaker

Elementary School in Winston-Salem, is a regular in the Tanglewood Par-3 series, which ties in with First Tee and takes it a step further by providing on-course competition. She finished second in last fall’s series and was playing in the spring series when she scored the ace. She also plans to play this summer. “Our programs teach kids life skills through golf, but we’re also teaching them how to play this great sport,” The First Tee of the Triad CEO Mike Barber said. “We can teach kids how to hit balls on the practice range, but it’s vital that they take what we teach them on the range and apply it to playing the game on the course. “That’s why we offer so many playing opportunities – so our students can begin to understand how to play the

Brandon Einstein: Growing his game

hen Brandon Einstein talks about growing his golf game, he often starts with a story about just plain, old growing. It all started in the summer after his freshman year. “I went from 5-foot-6 to 5-10,” said Einstein, a junior at West Forsyth High School. “I’m 5-11 right now. And I went from 115 pounds to 150 pounds.” The growth spurt affected his golf game right away. “Before I knew it, I was switching from senior flex and regular flex to stiff flex,” he said. “And I was just hitting it longer.” It didn’t take long to see the results on his scorecard. “My scores dropped very, very fast,” Einstein said. He notched three junior wins in a one-month span in the summer of 2016. Einstein had two more wins in the fall, including the Tarheel Youth Golf Association’s state championship, where he shot 73-73. As he grows his game, he’s noticing too what it takes to win.

“From the tournaments I’ve played, I can see that everyone out there in the field can swing a golf club,” he said. “It’s those that can put rounds together who will succeed. Those who have the mental game to get their way around 18 holes are the ones who end up time-and-time again in the top 10.” From age six to 12, Einstein was content to split his time between golf and baseball. But in the summer before 8th grade he realized he was having more fun working at his golf game. He got a little nudge, too, from his father, an accomplished golfer. “It was my dad,” he said. “He wanted me to get back into it because he was following me around the baseball fields. So I said, ‘I’ll come play with you.”’ Einstein has used his time wisely, sharpening his game by engaging his imagination. “My strongest point is my short game,” he said. “I have really good hands and a lot of creativity around the greens. That comes in handy. I can take a 55-degree wedge

and turn it into a 60-degree or turn it into a gap wedge around the greens. I like messing around like that with each club.” All that tinkering can fill up an afternoon at Bermuda Run Country Club. “I try to get my homework done in class so I can go out to the golf course,” he said. While golf is Einstein’s priority, he likes to make time for his hobby – fishing. Fortunately, the golf course does double duty. “If I cut my practice short, I’ll have an hour maybe three or four times a week,” he says. “Bermuda Run has lots of ponds. I just go there. It’s where all my golf balls lay that I’ve hit in the water.” Honors: 2017 Central Piedmont Conference player of the year. He shot 66 in the conference tournament. 2017 Victories: Shot 71 at the TYGA one-day tournament at Mid Pines in April. Best Round: “At Tanglewood (Golf Club), I shot 1-under (34) on the front, then I came to the back nine and birdied 10 through 15, and 17 to shoot 28. I finished with a 62.” Magic Moment: “Two years ago at the Forsyth Invitational. We had three generations of Einsteins out there that day. My dad (Greg) and I played and my grandfather (Freddie) followed us around. My grandfather won it (in 1973). That was really cool.” Goals: “I would like to finish in the top 10 in all the junior majors. And I would like to win the Forsyth Junior. My grandfather has won it, my dad has come close to winning it, so I would like to win it.”

Kayla Smith: A late bloomer in the junior ranks

By KURT DUSTERBERG ayla Smith is like so many accomplished junior golfers. Her online profile shows plenty of top-10 finishes and rounds in the 70s. What separates her from the others, however, is how quickly she made her way into the top tier of junior golf in North Carolina. Until this time last year, Smith had only dabbled in golf. Now a sophomore at Williams High School in Burlington, she is finding her game. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was a late bloomer to golf,â&#x20AC;? Smith said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve only had one full year of competitive golf just because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been playing other sports throughout my childhood.â&#x20AC;? After years of soccer, swimming, basketball and softball, she finally returned to the sport her father introduced her to when she was seven. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Compared to all the other sports, golf was the one that clicked with me and the one that I had the drive to continue playing competitively,â&#x20AC;? she said. These days, Smith is a one-sport athlete. She works on her game at Alamance Country Club under

the direction of Heather Hauk, the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s teaching pro. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m at the golf course pretty much every day,â&#x20AC;? Smith said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I try to balance school work with golf, which can be pretty tough sometimes. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m always doing something out on the course.â&#x20AC;? When she made the decision play in competitive junior events, she knew there would be a learning curve. Most of her competitors had years of experience managing nerves and handling the pressure of big shots. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was very nervous, pushing myself out in the big world of competitive golf,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think now that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m somewhat used to it, I feel like Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve learned a lot of new things.â&#x20AC;? In her first Peggy Kirk Bell tour event in 2016, Smith finished tied for 15th, shooting in the 70s all three rounds. She followed up with a second-place finish in a Tarheel Youth Golf Association event, posting a 74 in a one-day tournament. Whatever she lacked in experience, she quickly made up for in poise. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not necessarily focused on being new to competitive golf, I just feel like I want to go out there and play my game and not concern myself with (the competition),â&#x20AC;? she said. She capped off 2016 by finishing tied for second in the 3-A high school state championships

(76-74), leading Williams to a second-place overall finish. After one season of solidifying her status as a strong tournament player, she added her first win early in 2017. She shot 75 in a one-day PKB event in April. Now, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ready to build on that momentum. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My summer is going to be very packed because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m relatively new to the sport competitively,â&#x20AC;? she said â&#x20AC;&#x153;That will be good to really push me out there and see exactly whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s around me.â&#x20AC;? Once sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s out among her peers, she wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think about being a newbie â&#x20AC;&#x201C; just a golfer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a competitive person,â&#x20AC;? Smith said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m kind of a perfectionist, so I like to make sure everything is on square before I go to a tournament. That really helps with my drive in the sport.â&#x20AC;? Honors: 2016 Mid-State Athletic Conference, all-conference team. 2017 Victories: She shot 75 in PKB One-Day Series in April. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I ended up having to go to a playoff. Having a playoff for your first win was kind of nerve-racking.â&#x20AC;? Best Round: Recorded a 69 at Greensboro National Golf Club to win the Mid-State conference tournament. Magic Moment: â&#x20AC;&#x153;After I won my tournament in April, I walked off the green right to my dad, and he was smiling. It was just great for him to be there because he introduced me to the sport.â&#x20AC;? Goals: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want to improve my ranking, play competitively and get up toward the top of the leaderboard consistently. In the future, I want to go to college and play at an ACC or an SEC school, and hopefully make it to the professional level.â&#x20AC;?
