Inside the Wyndham Championship with Mark Brazil

he Wyndham Championship celebrates its 80th anniversary July 30-Aug. 4 at Sedgefield Country Club. Tournament Director Mark Brazil talks about the upcoming PGA event in the Q&A below:

Last month in Triad Golf Today, you explained the Wyndham Rewards Top 10, a new $10 Million bonus pool going to the top-10 golfers in FedExCup points following the Wyndham Championship. It has only been one month but do you have a better idea of how it may affect the field this summer? “We now have something brand new for pros to consider when they’re looking at their late-summer schedule, but I still think it will be after the U.S. Open, mid-June, before guys start looking at where they are and how things might play out as we get closer to Wyndham week. In talking to players and agents, it’s definitely on players’ radar in a big way. It was good to hear Rory (McIlroy) speak very positively about the Wyndham Rewards Top 10 during the Wells Fargo Championship. Congratulations to our friends in Charlotte on another terrific Wells Fargo Championship. One of the things I’m really watching is the top-five of the FedExCup rankings, which is also the top five of the Wyndham Rewards Top 10, and how many points separate them. After Brooks Koepka won the PGA Championship and moved to second, the top-four players were separated by 400 points. If that’s the case entering the Wyndham, No. 4 can win the Wyndham and 500 FedExCup points, take the points lead and win the $2 Million bonus plus the $1.16 Million he’ll win for winning the Wyndham, so those are the kinds of things we’re watching. There are a 100 different scenarios that could happen, and I think they’re all real positive for us.”

Q: A:

How has the re-stacked season been working out. Do you think the TOUR is happy with things so far? “I think the May date for the PGA worked out well for everybody…especially the PGA. It had more of a “U.S. Open feel” to it, and that’s positive. The golf course was built for long hitters – it’s a big-boy golf course. I

think they got what they wanted with DJ and Brooks coming down to the end, they’re two of the biggest hitters out there, two of the top players in the world.”

Q: A:

We’re inside two months until the Wyndham Championship – what’s going on with the tournament? “We’re putting in a lot of work on the houses we bought – we’re working on the yards, exteriors and interiors. We’re working with Sedgefield on a clearance for a new version of our main entrance so it’ll look a little different, and it’ll only get better over the next couple of years. We’re trying to improve the overall look and feel of the entrance. There’s a final two-month push for sponsor sales, and tickets went on sale at Ticketmaster.com earlier this month. We have a lot of new things taking shape right now that will be great for fans and sponsors, and we’re looking forward to unveiling them soon.”

Q: A:

And a year ago, the golf course itself was recovering from that crazy winter we had. “Yeah we were freaking out a little bit at this time last year because the golf course had so much damage from the severe winter. This year, we didn’t have a bad winter so the golf course is in great shape – they just punched the entire course a couple

weeks ago so it’s coming back just in time for the AJGA Wyndham Invitational presented by BB&T (June 11-14). Bobby Powell, our operations director, and I used to work at the AJGA. Our AJGA event is the one Justin Thomas won as a 16-year-old so we get many of the best junior golfers in the world. What we end up seeing out of this group of kids every year is that a few end up getting sponsor exemptions into the Wyndham Championship when they turn professional. It ends up being a great recruiting tool for us and a great event for sports tourism and economic development with 100 families coming to Greensboro for a week, staying in our hotels and eating in our restaurants. We appreciate the great support we get from organizations around the Triad, especially BB&T, but also the Greensboro Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Greensboro Sports Foundation and other local organizations.”

Q: A:

The list of Wyndham Invitational alumni on TOUR is really unbelievable. “It’s incredible! Guys like Brooks Koepka who just won the PGA Championship for his fourth Major championship win, Patrick Reed, Ricky Fowler, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth all played here as AJGA Junior golfers so it’s a big deal. First-year coach Kim Lewellen leads Wake Forest to second-place finish in NCAAs

s a first-team All-American golfer at the University of North Carolina in the early 1990s and more recently head women’s golf coach at Virginia for more than a decade, Kim Lewellen knows a thing or two about ACC rivalries. Lewellen is also accomplished at building winning collegiate programs, something she did at East Carolina and with the Cavaliers before taking over the Wake Forest program this season for longtime coaching legend Diane Dailey. Lewellen and her new team experi6

enced the ultimate ACC rivalry in mid May when the Demon Deacons and Duke Blue Devils advanced to face each other in NCAA Championship match play in the state of Arkansas. In the end, the outcome was razor thin, with Duke coming out on top on the final hole of the final match – three of which went to extra holes. Although not winning the title, it was the highest finish in school history for Wake Forest, and signaled what may become a more intense rivalry with the seven-time national champion Blue Devils in the near future. Lewellen grew up in Raleigh, competing on the boys’ golf teams at

Millbrook High School and then powerhouse Broughton after she was transferred because of school redistricting. It made her a better and mentally tougher player, and she feels this year’s final push to the season and NCAA experience will harden her talented returning players, which includes All-American Emilia Migliaccio of Cary. Lewellen was entrenched at Virginia, taking the Cavaliers to nine NCAA appearances in her 11 seasons, but her move to Wake Forest last summer was an easy decision, she said. “It was just home for me, and Diane Dailey is one of my closest friends and has always been my mentor so she

approached me with ‘hey, would you be interested in doing this?’” Lewellen said. “To follow such an icon in women’s golf was a great opportunity and she was there to help me in the transition -- it just became an obvious good fit.” However, for Lewellen it was a new team with new personalities. She remembers sitting down in her office – formally Dailey’s office – and looked around the room. “I kept every one of her photos in the office, and the reason was I was had competed against so many of the people in those pictures and they were

New Heights from page 6 my friends, we played junior golf against each other and college golf together and even some professional golf together,” she said. “And once I had got into coaching I had recruited them so you learn to love all of these players in that process. I just looked at them and said to myself ‘I’m new at this school but I’m not new to the young ladies that had competed here.’ It wasn’t as unfamiliar as it could have been for me in a different circumstance because I was just transferring from one ACC to another ACC school.” There was another key component to the move south to the state of North Carolina, Lewellen’s husband and kids would remain in Charlottesville, Va., until after the NCAA Championship, so the new coach had months and months of alone time – time she ended up spending with her new team members. “I spent almost every moment of my free time with the team or with somebody from the team, going to dinner with them, or riding bikes around campus with them,” Lewellen said. “I was immediately thrown into their lives pretty frequently. They became my family that I didn’t have here. Once you get to know those young ladies and understand their personalities and you figure out what works best practice-wise, you watch and you observe, and you watch some more

and observe some more, and figure out what parts of their games can get a little bit better, so as the year went on they continually got better and better and better, and the freshmen got older and older and more skilled.” After starting slowly in the fall season, Lewellen lead the Demon Deacons to three wins and three second-place finishes over the final six events dating to March, including the ACC Championship at Sedgefield. And while star Jennifer Kupcho stole most of the spotlight, Migliaccio emerged as one of the top-ranked college players in the nation, winning three times under the direction of Lewellen. “She (Lewellen) feels like my best friend,” Migliaccio said. “She is such an awesome person and coach. She’s so bubbly. We all talk about it, my teammates and I, when we reflect on the year. We didn’t know who was going to be coach after Dianne Dailey; she was so great. It was such a blessing that it was Kim because she’s really elevated our team. It’s been great.” Lewellen works with her golfer’s swings only if they ask. Migliaccio asked. “She started giving me a couple swing thoughts here and there and they were great,” the sophomore AllAmerican said. “It’s been a really cool experience to see how my ball striking has improved and become so consistent.”

Lewellen recruited Migliaccio while coaching at Virginia and had watched her play a lot of junior golf. In addition, Lewellen competed against Migliaccio’s mother in the NCAA tournament in 1993. “So we had a connection there immediately with the family,” Lewellen said. “Emilia is just a phenomenal player and an extremely hard worker. She is one of those players where there is never a day off and that shows in her game. She is a key component to this program. Emilia is going to be the heart of this team the next few years. Her work ethic is beyond anyone I‘ve ever seen.” Despite all the great moments for the program over the last two months, Lewellen had to deal with the heartbreak of the team falling one or two shots short of winning the national championship. Letizia Bagnoli, a freshman from Italy, ended up losing the final match when her second shot found the water. “The players actually managed that situation,” Lewellen said. “Sure, you could say hypothetically that shot lost the tournament but it did not. There were so many strokes from other players and so many things that could have turned the corner, like making a putt here or there, so it never comes down to that last shot like it looked like on TV, but that’s the excitement of TV isn’t it, but it’s none of that. And that’s what so good about this team, they immediately got together, huddled

and cried together, but they spent some time with each other and went through all the scenarios to make sure they all understood it’s a team effort whether you win or lose. Sometimes like in basketball that free throw shot doesn’t go in. “Our team manages these things among themselves very well and as coaches you allow them to do that because they have worked well as a unit all year, and then if you need to fill in and say anything that leaves no doubt then you will do that. But they have all been there before, either competing individually or playing team sports. They know the deal.” Bagnoli is just one of three international players in the starting lineup that also includes a golfer from China and Switzerland. Lewellen says she will continue to recruit along those lines, in additional to trying to find the best players in the states. “The international aspect fits very well at Wake Forest,” said she. “My philosophy has always been to ask myself “What does the student body look like?’ and try to mirror that with your team.” Lewellen will soon have more skin in the game at Wake Forest than just coaching the women’s golf team. Her son, a left-handed pitcher, has verbally committed to play baseball for the Demon Deacons in 2021. “How exciting is that?” she said.

Alluring Rumbling Bald offers a cool place to hang out, take in 36 holes

By DAVID DROSCHAK t’s fitting golf course architect Dan Maples spent some quality time with his legendary father Ellis Maples during the designing of Apple Valley at Rumbling Bald Resort, considering generations of families have for decades enjoyed special moments at the mountain retreat along with its splendid scenery and countless recreational offerings. The elder Maples enjoyed nothing more than walking his layouts during the construction phase, but failing health in the early 1980s prevented that from happening. So son Dan improvised, bulldozing a path so the two could drive through the proposed golf course property together. 10

“Dad used to always tell me that walking is a slower pace and you can see more things,” Dan Maples said. “I remember taking him around Apple Valley in a Wagonaire because it was the first course that he didn’t get to walk.” A slower pace at the Lake Lure resort is contagious, with a stunning lake and beach, along with 36 holes of golf just the beginning of all the activities available for families to enjoy during the spring, summer and fall months. “I was thinking that maybe we should change the national symbol from the bald eagle to a squirrel because we’re all scurrying around all the time, running here and running there,” said Rumbling Bald Resort general manager Jeff Geisler, . “Part of our brain simply needs to shut down. The idea of smoking a cigar and watching the smoke billow up, that abil-

ity to kind of disconnect is a vibrant part of who we are. Rumbling Bald Resort is the antidote for all of that. The whole point of this resort is to get you outside – it is to get you to the lake, to get you on a boat, to get you hiking or on our two golf courses. We want you to reconnect with the things that make us human.” At less than 6,300 yards, the Bald Mountain course was designed in 1968 by William B. Lewis, and features five par-5s and five pars 3s to create a unique golfing experience in the shadows of a stoned-faced mountain. A scene from the movie Dirty Dancing was filmed on the 16th hole so make sure to bring your camera to capture this scenic photo opportunity. Remember, leave your driver in the bag on some of the shorter, tree-lined holes, while putts tend to break toward

More than a decade later the two Maples designed Apple Valley, one of the better mountain courses in the state. “A second golf course at the resort made perfect sense because they have new people coming every week, which is great for golf course business,” Maples said. “What daddy and I liked about it was there was enough flat land to where you could get a golf course in. I’ve looked at 6,000 acres before in the mountains, and sure I could put a golf course in there for about $10-$15 million if you blast out enough rock you can build anything.” Apple Valley measures close to 6,800 yards and water comes into play on 12 of the 18 holes but is not overbearing. Rumbling Bald from page 10 of the apple trees from a large grove for which the course is named remains along the left side of the first hole. “I remember producing a golf shot analysis on Apple Valley to see what kind of golf course it was going to be and 75 percent of the shots were either level or downhill, which is a lot of hang time -- and everybody loves hang time so we always thought it would be a pretty popular golf course,” Dan Maples said. “So, threequarters of it played downhill, which is kind of unheard of in the mountains.” Rumbling Bald Resort on Lake Lure is modestly priced, offering condo rentals along the golf courses and house rentals that wind their way into the mountain setting. “We’re not here to do anything other than have families connect with each other, put the phone down, forget about the emails and enjoy what the resort has to offer,” Geisler said. Rumbling Bald Resort on Lake Lure is located in Rutherford County, which is also home to nearby Chimney Rock State Park. One little known fact about the county includes the minting of the first $1 gold coin in the United States in 1831. “We can’t turn the clock back on TV; we can’t turn the clock back on digital age -- not that we want to be because they have created so many wonderful things – but we’ve lost in a large way our ability to connect with the things that are most important,” added Geisler. “I hope people come to Rumbling Bald Resort on Lake Lure and just have time to sit on a chair outside of your house or condo and stare out into the forest and think about nothing. If you do that we’ve succeeded.”

Overflowing with talent Broughton’s Fountain runs away with 4-A state title By DAVID DROSCHAK

he Fountain name has been synonymous with golf talent in Raleigh for much of the last decade. First there was Richard Fountain, who went to Davidson and won a Southern Conference individual title. Then Preyer Fountain played golf at the University of North Carolina the last four years. Up next is little brother Peter Fountain, who just may be the best of the bunch.

Fountain, a junior from Raleigh Broughton, who verbally committed to play for the Tar Heels as a 15-year-old freshman, fired rounds of 69 and 68 to run away with the 4-A state high school men’s golf championship by eight strokes at Pinehurst No. 8. “It’s hard to compare them all, they are all good, I wouldn’t put any one of them over the other, but he’s the only one who has won the state championship,” Broughton coach Anderson Marlowe said of Peter Fountain as

the youngest of the golfing brother trio. Meanwhile, on the team side, after four second-place finishes over the last nine years, Charlotte Myers Park finally captured that elusive team championship, edging out New Bern by two strokes. “You play well at tournaments and if somebody plays better you tip your cap, but definitely it’s a relief we finally got over the edge and got this one done,” said Myers Park coach Jason Lockwood. “And of course we had to sweat it out until the very end, until all the numbers were posted.” Fountain had some extra motivation heading into this year’s championship. He lost a playoff for the title last year on Pinehurst No. 6 to A.J. Beechler of Pinecrest. “There was definitely a chip on my shoulder, it was frustrating losing to A.J. last year but I was happy he won it because he’s one of my closest golf friends,” Fountain said. “It definitely made me more determined to win this one, losing in a playoff. This was awesome.” Fountain won the East Regional by three shots over New Bern’s Randall Hudson, and led him by one stroke going into the final 18 holes of the 4-A state championship. Hudson ended up fading with

a 76, while Fountain went on a tear over a five-hole stretch midway through his round with birdies on four of five holes to at one point get to 5-under on his final round. He also eagled No. 12 to set himself apart from the field. “It was one of the better rounds of high school golf that I’ve ever seen,” Marlowe said of Fountain. “For two days, he was just solid as a rock. I think coming in he felt he should have won it last year and now he got it done so that’s awesome. “No question he did have a chip on his shoulder,” Marlowe added. ”We even talked about it some; I told him it was his to go get and he sure did.” Fountain has enjoyed battling it out on the links over the years with his older brothers. “It was fun growing up with them and playing with them because I wasn’t intimidated by anybody else since they were so good,” Fountain said. “They have made me better mentally; taught me how to work on my attitude and never let a bad shot get to me, to always focus on the next one. were carded over the two days at Pinehurst No. 8, and Fountain owned two of them. “There was definitely pressure going into the final round with just a one shot lead,” he said. “But in the first round my only over par scores were a 3-putt and a 4-putt so I felt really good about my game. I was pretty confident that if limited those I could win it.” Fountain will finish high school early and head to Chapel Hill for the spring semester of 2020. Clayson Good of Durham Jordan shot 73-72 to finish second at 1-over par, while Middle Creek senior Jack Marcotte was another shot back and in a three-way tie for third. On the team side, a half-dozen teams were within 10 shots after the opening round with New Bern holding a two-shot lead over Myers Park. But Myers Park, who finished runner-up to Broughton by three shots last season, was able to rally for the close win with Cardinal Gibbons coming in third. “I knew we had a really good team coming into the season,” Lockwood said. “We were five deep and that gave us an advantage because a lot of schools only have four good players and their fifth guy doesn’t count a lot. My fourth player at this tournament was our low player. That helps when you have a team where your top four can come from anywhere.” A nervous Lockwood pulled out his cell phone and began calculating the outcome around the large scoreboard as the scores trickled in. “You hope you’re doing your math right,” he said about not getting too excited too early. “It’s joy for the kids,” Lockwood added. “It will be good to kind of let it settle in, but I’ve had a lot of good teams over the years that have missed by just a couple of shots and you feel bad for them, but eventually we were going to get the job done. This is like a celebration for all those teams.”

New Golf Course in town

Colin Creek opens in Mocksville with new name, approach and amenities

half century ago, Hickory Hill Golf Club debuted in Mocksville along Highway 64 and quickly became a popular local layout. Then, about 15 years ago, a new owner took over and renamed the golf course Lake Louise. After that owner passed away, the golf course began to lose its luster and eventually closed. Last year, half of the piece of property on one side of the 90-acre Lake Louise was sold to a pair of doctors, who have renovated the remaining 12 holes into a unique new layout that they recently reopened with the name Colin Creek Golf & Country Club. Dr. David Duncan, a WinstonSalem thoracic surgeon, who has

lived in the area for 20 years, and Dr. Joel Edwards, a family practitioner in Davie County, purchased the club and made numerous renovations, with many more on the drawing board. Duncan said he had played the golf course through the years and had watched it deteriorate. When it closed, he began talking with several consultants about different options The new Colin Creek Golf & Country Club is a 12-hole layout, but the first six holes have multiple sets of tee boxes that allow the course to be played as 18 holes. So, golfers have the option of playing six, 12 or 18 holes. Among the best components of the new deal is the reasonable cost of the green fees. Golfers can walk 12 or 18 holes for $12, or they can take a golf cart for $3 every six holes. These prices are good every day of the week

and for all ages of player — juniors to seniors. A grand reopening cookout at Colin Creek Golf & Country Club took place in early May. Duncan took the opportunity to address a crowd of interested regulars and prospective members. “We wanted something that is very pretty and we wanted something that is very straightforward to play, that you can play in two hours,” Duncan told the crowd. “That’s the whole idea. People want to be able to play quick golf and get back home, and they want something that is cost effective. We have intentionally priced it very low.” Duncan said the golf course superintendent David Shelton had spent a lot of time educating him on what needed to be done during the transi-

tion. One item was transforming sand traps into grass bunkers. Now, the golf course offers beautiful views of rolling fairways and immaculately prepped greens, along with a relaxing atmosphere. “Dave and I had a vision that we wanted to reopen this golf course and make it better if we could — improve the greens and fairways — and I think we’ve gone a long way towards that,” Duncan said. “We’re really focused on aesthetics. We still have a long way to go with the rough. “It’s a process. It’s going to take us a few years with a good fertilization plan and David’s leadership to get back to where we really want it to be. He’s been very encouraging.” In addition, Justin Draughn Construction added a beautiful

A new restaurant at Colin Creek G&CC called 64 Bistro, which is owned and operated by Michael Burton and run by chef Ryan Krige, now offers casual and fine dining, with optional seating in the renovated clubhouse’s spacious dining room or the outside pavilion, which is also available for event rentals to host weddings, birthday parties or other large gatherings. I’ve known Michael (Burton) for 10 years, since I did surgery on his dad,” Duncan said. “We had talked about trying to open up a restaurant here. He has a great vision on that and he’s an excellent cook.” The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner featuring a full menu that includes barbeque, brisket, ribs, chicken, smoked wings, fish, tacos, salads and wraps. There will also be live music played at night during the weekends. “We’re going to serve good, quality food cooked with a lot of passion and a lot of love,” Burton said. The new Colin Creek G&CC ownership group is offering a membership deal: $600 for a family and $500 for an individual, where the initial membership has to be a two-year commitment. This fee includes unlimited golf — paying for a golf cart — along with unlimited use of the driving range and a 10 percent discount on food and beverage at 64 Bistro. On the drawing board at Colin Creek is a health park that is open to the public, with walking and biking trails that interconnect with the golf course, a children’s park and exercise area, as well as an adult physical fitness area and a dog park. There are

also plans to construct a dock for boating, canoes and kayaks, as well as fishing from the embankments. Colin Creek G&CC also has a swimming pool and tennis courts that are currently in need of repair before possibly reopening. “I’ve been asked about the swimming pool by everybody,” Duncan said. “‘Are you going to open the pool back?’ I would love to open the pool back, but there’s got to be a business component to justify doing that. “When this golf course opened in 1968, they had 320 members right off the bat, so I’m hoping we can get to

200,” Duncan said. “If we can get to 250 members, we will open the pool. We have to get back to the type of membership we had in 1968.” The club has a new name, a new look and new owners who have a renewed commitment to providing the value of a great product to the community. “My vision is to make this a true community facility — full families, churches, youth groups,” Duncan said. Julius Suiter — a popular, retired Davie High School principal and coach with many years of mentoring and supporting youth in Davie — runs the club as the general manager. “I can

guarantee you this golf course would have never re-opened without Julius and his persistence and staying on top of things,” Duncan said. “He’s been a great asset to the community. We absolutely love him for what he did getting all this set up.” Suiter was an original member of Hickory Hill in 1968. He said he is especially proud of the new Colin Creek G&CC. “It’s very exciting what we’ve got going on here,” Suiter said. “We need to spread the word that we are open and that there’s a new golf course in town.”

Three Alamance County teams come up short in 3-A championship

astern Alamance came into the 3-A men’s golf tournament at Foxfire Resort and Golf Club with high expectations. The Eagles had won the Mideast Regional at Keith Hills Golf Club with a 299 total and expected to contend for the state title. But they struggled to a 324 in the first round at Foxfire and were in sixth place after day one out of 12 teams. However, the Eagles rebounded with a 312, the second best team score in the final round, to claim fourth place. “I was proud of how they finished,” said Eastern Alamance coach J.T. Kirby. “We got off to a slow start in the first round. I think nerves played a little bit of a factor.” Kirby gave his team a realistic goal to shoot for in the final round. “We looked at how far behind we were,” he said. “I told the guys I’m not going to sugarcoat it. The odds aren’t great to go out there and win the thing. We were 18 shots out of second place so, hey, that’s our goal. Let’s shoot for that one. I told them to make a personal goal for yourself and go and do this for our team.” The Eagles were led by junior Nick Mathews who shot 81-72 – 153 to tie for 11th place in the individual standings. Sophomore Caden Baker shot 75-80 – 155. “Nick and Caden have the ability to go out any day and go under par,” Kirby said. “They both work at the game extremely hard. They do a good job of knowing how they have to play and they have a good plan going into it. I think that leads to their success. I’m glad they’re coming back.” Senior Zane Ector, who won the Mideast Regional with a 73, shot 82-76 – 158 for the Eagles and fellow senior Kameron Jones had 86-84 – 170. The Eagles finished fifth in the state in 2018 and were expecting to have another successful season. “You’ve got those expectations on you, especially our seniors,” Kirby said. “At times, you tend to press. It’s disappointing we didn’t have the kind of finish that we wanted but you can’t take away from what our seniors have done. “This is the most successful golf team we’ve had in our school history. I’m very proud of that and all their accomplishments.” Alamance County was well represented in the state tournament with three teams making the field. Besides Eastern Alamance, Williams High of Burlington shot 650 to place eighth and 22

Western Alamance was 10th with a 675. They were the top three finishers in the Mideast Regional. “Our county had three teams here so that was pretty cool,” said Williams golfer Garrett Clark. “I was cheering for Eastern Alamance. They have a really good team. I was hoping they could get it done.” Clark, a junior, was playing in the state tournament for the third straight year. He finished fifth as a freshman and third last year. So, he was disappointed to shoot 74-78 – 152 and tie for ninth place this year. “I wanted to get it done but I fell off this year,” Clark said. “I like the golf course; I just didn’t play too hot. I just made a few dumb mistakes and I just never got the putter rolling. Hopefully, next year is the year.” His most costly shot of the final round happened on the 11th hole where he had a wedge into the par 4. “I hit one of my best wedge shots of the day but I misjudged the wind,” he said. The ball dropped into the water in front of the green and led to a double bogey. A gusty wind created problems for the players both days of the tournament. “The wind was a big factor,” said Williams coach Tommy Cole. “I can’t remember when it was this bad. It was almost as bad as beach golf at times.” Cole has led his team to the state tournament in 25 of his 35 years as the golf coach at Williams. “We wanted to move up,” he said. “We bettered ourselves by eight shots. But you’ve got to play well both days.” Clark was hoping the Bulldogs would do better than their eighth place finish. “I thought we could be kind of a sleeper team here,” Clark said. “I think we were capable of it but we just didn’t play how we could.” Besides Clark, sophomore Garrett Hauk will return for the Bulldogs next year. He shot 78-79 – 157. The other two scorers for Williams were seniors Ellis Hawks who shot 87-80 – 167 and Alex Pardue (90-84 – 174). Western Alamance’s showing was impressive because it has such a young team with two freshmen and a sophomore. It was led by freshman Jake Clayton who shot 78-84 – 162. The team’s other scorers were sophomore Jack Dockrill (85-79 – 164), senior Spencer Wood (88-85 – 173) and freshman Brad Grajzar (86-92 – 178). ay Dee Draper is experiencing a homecoming of sorts with his recent hire as golf professional at Forest Park Country Club in Martinsville, Va. Draper, 42, assumed the role May 1 and said he wants to help return the course to its former glory, to the days in the 1990s when he played there as a member of the golf team at nearby Martinsville High School. “This was our Sedgefield, our Greensboro Country Club,” Draper said, comparing Forest Park to some of the more elite courses in the Triad. “At one time, this was the equal to any course around.” Measuring 6,624 yards, Forest Park was designed by Gene Hamm, a Raleigh native known for designing courses in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and New York. Though it was once a thriving place to play, Forest Park had more recently fallen on hard times. There hasn’t been a head professional at the course since 2004. The greens and fairways had both reached the stage where they needed plenty of work. The decline, say those involved in the revitalization, wasn’t the result of a lack of effort on the part of the staff as much it was because of a downturn in membership at Forest Park. The membership decline was symbolic of troubles in the Martinsville economy. Less members means less money to keep things top notch. “It has been a struggle, for sure,” said Chris Clark, a member of the Forest Park board of directors and chairman of the committee that selected Draper. But in his next breath, Clark emphasized, “In the last six months, we’ve seen a huge, huge comeback.” He said the goal of everyone at Forest Park is to return the facility to a healthy country club and golf course. Volunteers are helping in numerous instances and club officials are working to pay down a debt that had grown over the years. Clark said he thinks Draper will play a big role in realizing the dreams of returning Forest Park to a healthy, viable country club. He and Draper have known one another for decades and were once teammates on the golf team at Carlisle School, a private institution in Martinsville.

The Forest Park clubhouse sits on a hill looking down on the course below. “He’s very friendly, really a thinker,” Clark said. “Jay Dee brings ideas to the table. I know it’s cliché, but he really thinks outside-the-box.” Draper said he appreciates the kind words and agrees they’re already making headway in remaking Forest Park the country club and course it once was. “The course is returning to good shape,” Draper said. “We’re trying to build membership. We’re trying some new things that haven’t been tried in the area.” Clinics for junior golfers, veterans and women are part of the plans for Forest Park. Draper is a cancer survivor, having been diagnosed with lymphoma in 2005. He plans a tournament soon at Forest Park to raise money for cancer research. Meanwhile, the Aaron Kovac Memorial Golf Tournament held there in mid-May was a huge success with 55 teams participating and proceeds going to help invigorate interest in junior golf in the Martinsville area. Green fees have been sliced to $20 on weekdays and $26 on weekends to lure more golfers to the course. The

price of club memberships has also been cut with a special for those under the age of 40 and a special on family memberships. “Promotion,” Draper said, “is a big thing.” Draper has an interesting background. His father, David, was an area coaching legend and was for years golf coach at Martinsville High School. Though Jay Dee attended Martinsville, he eventually transferred to and graduated from nearby Carlisle, where he and Clark were teammates. After graduating high school, Draper attended Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte where he played on the golf team. After being out of school a few years, he enrolled at Winston-Salem State University where he also played golf. Draper isn’t the kind of guy to brag on himself, but noted he won the 2011 Winston-Salem State University Invitational Golf Tournament by seven strokes, which if isn’t a record, surely comes close. In recent years he has worked as a PGA apprentice at Rick Murphy Golf Academy in Greensboro, served as site

coordinator for The First Tee of the Triad and been an instructor for We Teach Golf. Draper thanks almost everyone on the staff at Rick Murphy Golf Academy for playing a role in his successes. “They’re a great bunch to work with,” he said. Draper also has nothing but kind words for the staff at Forest Park, and for those who gave him the opportunity he’s now seizing upon. He offered especial words of gratitude to Clark, George Casey, the club’s president, Scott Shytle, the general manager, and Mary Pickett, the finance manager. Others speak equally highly of Draper. “Jay Dee has a passion for golf and gets along well with people, which is a good combination,” said Jack Lewis, an instructor at Rick Murphy Golf Academy and former head golf coach at Wake Forest University. “He’s got a passion, and in order to be successful, you’ve got to have a passion.”

Mebane city employees share the glory at Mill Creek

olf’s the perfect vehicle to get folks who work together to play together. Collecting holes-in-one is an added bonus. “It’s a chance for city employees and city council members to get together once a week to play nine holes of golf after work,” said Aaron Davis, Recreation and Parks Director for the City of Mebane. “It’s an opportunity to get to know somebody you maybe have never met before.” Davis was one of two players in an outing at Mill Creek Golf Club on May 7 to hit a perfect shot. Jon Pendergraph, from the utilities department, was the other. By all accounts, the aces came within minutes of each other. In the shotgun start, Davis started on No. 3 and aced the 8th hole. Pendergraph started on No. 1 and aced the 4th hole. City manager David Cheek wasn’t a participant in the competition that day but he had a cart and was riding among the groups. “The city manager rolled up behind and asked how’s it going and I told him

It was Davis’ fourth hole-in-one and the first for Pendergraph. Davis was in a group with Keith Withers and Raymond Sharpe when he hit a pitching wedge on the 135-yard hole. Pendergraph used a 9-iron for his 135yard shot with Kurt Pearson, Tony Morris and Steve Fogelman in his foursome. In those days there were the starting holes of No. 3 & No. 5. This land has since been reworked into The Cradle, a marvelous and entertaining hour (or less) of golf that everyone should try. We eventually moved to Pinehurst and joined the ranks of Pinehurst Country Club several years ago. Payne Stewart’s posing statue dominates the view to the left of the 18th green. It is common to see a bird using his raised fist as a perch. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind. One of my regular pleasures is to watch all sorts of folks attempting to mimic Payne’s joyous kick and fist pump. More than one has taken a tumble in the attempt. Better yet is to step up and ask the gang trying to get a souvenir photo for everyone in the group. “Would you like me to take a picture of all of you together?” “Oh, wow! Yes, please.” It takes a while, but I wait until they have all figured out how to hold the pose long enough to get the money shot. I have many golf memories. The one I don’t have and have many times wished it could have been; one round with my dad. That would have been somethin’.

Guilford’s run for DIII title ends seven shots short

By STEVE WILLIAMS uilford’s bid for its third NCAA Division III national championship ended a few shots short –

again. The Quakers finished third this time at Keene Trace Golf Club in Kentucky as their 1181 total was seven shots off the pace of Illinois Wesleyan and four back of Huntingdon College. It marked Guilford’s fourth straight top-eight NCAA finish. The Quakers have placed ninth or better in 13 of their last 20 Division III Tournament appearances with nine Addison Manring top-five efforts. The Quakers won D-3 titles in 2002 and 2005. There were 42 teams in the field but it turned out to be a three-team race. Fourthplace Concordia was 12 behind Guilford. Methodist University, which won the national title a year ago, settled for fifth place, 23 shots off the pace.

Illinois Wesleyan and Huntingdon began the final round tied for the 54-hole lead, just two shots ahead of Guilford. It remained close for the first 12 holes before Wesleyan and Huntingdon pulled away. Guilford was coming off a disappointing second-place finish in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament when Washington & Lee surged from behind in the final round at Bryan Park’s

Champions Course with a sizzling 6-under-par charge. At the nationals, it was Illinois Wesleyan that made the move in the fourth round, especially over the final six holes where they played 2-under. It was Wesleyan’s first national golf title. Guilford had three of the top nine individual finishers. Junior James Mishoe of Cary placed fifth at 292; Josh Hill,

Guilford’s only senior, tied for sixth at 293 and Addison Manring, a sophomore from Stoneville, tied for ninth at 294. Manring was tied for fourth after posting 73-72-72 but he slipped to a 77 in the final round. Sophomore Louis Lambert came through with a second-round 72 and a fourth-round 74 to help the Quakers and Jack Lee, another sophomore, counted a first-round 75 and a fourth-round 77.

East Surry finishes second in 1-A State Championship

fter missing out on the team competition last year, East Surry returned to the 1-A state men’s high school golf championship this season and finished second at Pinehurst Resort No. 6 course. East Surry trailed by just three shots heading into round two, but fell off the pace and finished 17 shots behind winner Community School of Davidson. Landon Barnes was the top individual for East Surry, carding rounds of 80 and 84 to tie for 10th place, while freshmen Chase Harris and Bradley Davis turned in top 25 scores. Barnes finished tied for seventh last year. “Having the two freshmen playing in

spots 2-3 was a little unnerving for them,” said assistant coach Sam Randazzo. “It was their first time there and when you know you’re three back after the first day you try to play as well as you possibly can, and I think they got a little nervous. It was more of a learning experience more than anything else.” East Wilkes, East Surry and Community School of Davidson all tied at 326 in the Midwest Regional at Cedarbrook Country Club, with Barnes tied for second with a 75. “We started a junior, two freshmen and two seniors and our seniors are playing spots 4-5 so I think we’re going to be pretty good in the years to come,” Sam said. “And I’ve been working with a couple of really good ninth-graders on the range so we’re

going to be in real good shape going into next season with a solid six, seven players.” East Wilkes was the next best area team in the 1-A team standings, finishing fifth. In the individual championship, Caleb Surratt from Union Academy edged last year’s champion, Addison Beam from Highland Tech, by one shot. After an upand-down opening round of even-par, Surratt played a steady-handed round in day two, carding 1-under, 71, with three birdies. He earned the school’s second individual state title. Nick Smith won it in 2016. Meanwhile, Midway junior Logan Patrick won his second straight 2-A individual championship with rounds of 71 and 74 for a 1-over 145. And Lake Norman Charter earned the school’s first team state

championship in men’s golf after two straight years of second place finishes. Patrick came into the final round as the lone player under par in the field. While he gave a few shots back to the Longleaf course, he maintained a comfortable lead for the majority of the day. Trailing by five shots entering the second round, West Stanly’s Chase Clayton feverishly tried to chase Patrick down during the final round. Clayton posted a round with four of his five birdies on the back nine for a finalround 71 and second-place finish. Midway finished second in the team competition well off the pace of Lake Norman Charter, followed by West Lincoln and East Lincoln and Forbush. www.triadgolf.com
