hen Diane Dailey stepped down after three decades as the Wake Forest women’s golf coach she dreamed of playing more golf and of spending quality time with her older sister in the North Carolina mountains. Giving golf lessons and teaching the game that opened so many doors wasn’t necessarily in the cards. But as we all know, retirement plans can take a few unexpected twists and turns. Dailey was trying to get her game back in shape the other night at Maple Chase before heading to Blowing Rock for the summer months. She chuckled about the state of her swing. “It has been a little rough,” she said of the few holes she logged. “I just haven’t had a chance to play a lot and I have just lost a lot of distance and strength. I’ve been trying to work on that a little bit. It is starting to come back.” I can attest that part of that “distance thing” has to do with age, but in Dailey’s case it can also be traced to her lesson schedule, which has mushroomed to include a stable of players in both the Winston-Salem area and mountains, including three members of the state championship Reagan women’s team. “I was up at Blowing Rock recently and I had 12 lessons in a four-day period,” Dailey said. “I think I just hit just 10 balls myself the whole time I was up there. I had no idea I would be doing this. “I was teaching five or six lessons a week at Blowing Rock last year and it was fine, and then the pro there asked if I would like to teach in the summertime

and I thought ‘well, that might be fun,”’ she added. “I did it because my sister has a place up there so it as easy for me to be there, but I ended up really teaching a lot. I really enjoyed the people and the environment. It was just fun to get people hitting the ball again.” “I teach beginners and then I teach people who have played golf for awhile, but I always like to take them out on the golf course and teach them a little bit about how to play, how to manage the course, how to play uneven lies, how to adjust for distances. To see that smile come across their face when they start hitting it well is the biggest reward you can get.” Dailey, a four-time ACC coach of the year, took over the Wake Forest program in the summer of 1988, and during her three decades of leading the program the Demon Deacons won 30 team titles, 39 individual titles, four ACC Championships and qualified for 15 NCAA Championships. Her forte early in her college coaching career was helping players in the short-game area, but as time went on most college golfers had their own personal instructors and Dailey began teaching less and less. “The biggest piece coach Dailey helped me with was the mental side,” said All-American senior Emilia Migliaccio. “She’s the most positive person I know on the course. If I was down or frustrated I leaned on her a lot for words of encouragement and she always had the right ones, and a couple really awesome stories. She told me one time she hit only three greens and shot 3-under. She always believed in the ‘impossible’ and it was so inspiring and something I take with me on the golf course every single day.” While at Wake Forest, Dailey met Reagan High School head coach Jay Allred, whose daughter Victoria was a top-notch player. Dailey and Allred

and likes to go out on the course and watch the players in competition to see if there is something she is missing between the practice tee and competition.” Dailey was thrilled when Reagan freshman Macy Pate called to tell her she had won the individual state championship, and that teammates Morgan Ketchum and Anna Howerton helped secure the team title, too. “I wrote them and told them that all of their hard work had paid off,” Dailey said. “What a great thing to be a state champion. Nobody can ever take that away from you forever. It will always be in the record books that you are a state champion. I was just so excited for them. eaching the top in golf often requires tremendous sacrifices, including long hours on the practice range, a never-ending focus on fundamentals, mental toughness and course management, just to name a few. Macy Pate added one more item to the mix this past year. The Reagan High School freshman and her family had a meeting of the minds and decided it was best to leave the cold weather of Boone behind and move to the Triad area, in large part to help Pate live her golf dream. “Both of my parents got new jobs and now I go to a new school so everything is a little bit different,” said Pate, who carded a 68 to capture the 4-A individual state title at Pinehurst No. 1 in mid-May. “We’ve always talked about moving down to the Winston-Salem area so when COVID happened I said ‘you know what, I may want to move, I’m tired of the cold weather, I’m tired of not having great practice facilities.’ It turned out to be a good decision.” The 15-year-old’s 2-under score helped Reagan to the state team title with a 3-over team total to beat Green Hope by nine shots. Junior Morgan Ketchum shot even par to come in third, while Anna Howerton carded a 75 for a tie for 11th to cap the team’s remarkable season, in which it won the program’s 12th straight conference title and set new state records for the lowest ninehole score (100) and lowest 18-hole score (210). Reagan also won the 2018 state team title under head coach Jay Allred and assistant coach Mary Kate Bowman Choat, who proudly took photos with its players around the famed Pinehurst Putter Boy statue after yet another dominating performance. “Our three top girls are all great golfers and on any given day any one of them could have won the state individual title, but this year it was Macy’s day,” Allred said. “Anna led the conference www.triadgolf.com

the first four matches and Macy was third. At the conference tournament Macy wins by enough strokes to finish as the player of the year. The next week at regionals, Morgan wins, and the next week at states Macy wins. They all have great swings and great styles of play.” “I’m not really sure how it happened and I’m not sure Jay is exactly sure how it happened but it has been like if

you build it, they will come and that’s kind of what has been happening,” Bowman Choat said of the program’s recent dominance in women’s prep golf. “And we have some other great girls coming in next year and the following year, so hopefully we’re going to continue a long legacy – that’s the plan.” Grace Holcomb of Wilmington Laney was playing one group in front of Pate, who saw Holcomb birdie the final hole to forge a tie as she was awaiting her second shot at the par-5 out of the pine straw after her drive went left. “I saw Grace make her birdie putt and everybody was clapping so I knew I had to make a birdie, too,” Pate said of her 190-yard approach shot. “The ball was a little below my feet on my second shot and I was trying to hit a little hook around the tree but I ended up going just below the tree and had a fairway chip to the green for my third shot.” Pate kept her approach 12 feet below the hole and sank the putt, with the ball rolling all the way around the edge of the hole before hitting the bottom of the cup for the dramatic one-shot win over

Holcomb, who shot a 69. “I don’t think of it as pressure, it’s more motivation to try to win three more years,” Pate said about taking the individual title as a freshman. Pate, Ketchum and Howerton all take lessons from former Wake Forest women’s coach Diane Dailey, who teaches out of Maple Chase in the winter and spring months, and then spends the Memorial Day through October in the mountains at Blowing Rock Country Club. It was there where Dailey first met Pate on the range. “She was taking lessons from Wayne Smith and I just started talking to her a little bit, and her dad asked me about college golf,” Dailey said. “So, we set up a plan on what she needed to be doing and what college golf was like, and I sort of gave her an overview of that and different aspects of her game that she could work on in general. At the time I had not seen her play or worked with her at all.” The three Reagan players knew each other from junior golf and were friends, but became even closer when Pate moved to the area and all three logged lessons with Dailey. “When Macy was in Boone she didn’t have anybody to really push her,” Dailey said. “I told her that could really be helpful to her, that she would have a team and wouldn’t be the only person, and that she would have a place like Maple Chase to play all winter.” Ketchum and Pate also spend time practicing and playing with Maple Chase instructor Brad Luebchow. Pate’s addition to the team fit like a glove, while her father landed a job

at Old Town Club and her mother as a paralegal at a local law firm. “They just thrive on each other, they play games, they challenge each other and are each other’s best friends,” Dailey said of the three Reagan players. “When Macy won all Morgan could talk about was how her good friend won a state championship and how proud she was of her. There is no jealously at all; they just want to see how good they can get in such a healthy environment.” “Macy has just been such a blessing this year,” added Bowman Choat. “She has just been such a great asset to our team. She is super positive and always laser focused and just never gives up. That’s something that a lot of kids can’t do, they let the bad shots bring them down and she just doesn’t. I’m just really, really encouraged by her attitude and everything she does and the way she plays.” Ketchum, is a junior and as stellar in the classroom as she is on the golf course, said she has yet to choose a college. “She is definitely a Division I player; somebody is going to get a really good player,” Dailey said. “The problem the prep juniors have had this year was the college coaches couldn’t recruit because of COVID, and then a lot of college coaches are keeping players for a fifth year so that ties up scholarships. I can tell you no one is going to work harder than Morgan, she works all the time. She will come out to practice on two hours of sleep if she feels like she didn’t practice as much the day before. She is a workaholic and has a great long game and is extremely calm on the course.”

Pinecrest wins fifth team title since 2013 behind prep star Van Paris By DAVID DROSCHAK

ackson Van Paris has been one of the nation’s top junior golfers the last few years, accustomed to handling pressure situations. So, heading to the 18th hole at Pinehurst No. 2, needing a par on one of the hardest holes on the course to secure the North Carolina 4-A high school men’s championship, wasn’t all that daunting. Clinging to a one-shot lead in the final group of the day, Van Paris ripped a drive into the fairway, hit an 8-iron to the middle of the green, and then proceeded to twoputt to capture the prep individual crown as a senior as well as leading local favorite Pinecrest High School to its fifth team title since 2013. “Jackson is very seasoned and he just knows how to win it when you need to win it,” said Pinecrest coach Lynn Beechler. “He comes through when you need him to come through.” Van Paris, who in 2018 at Pebble Beach became the became youngest competitor

to win a match at the U.S. Amateur since Bobby Jones more than 100 years ago, joins Jack Fields (2008), Eric Bae (2015), and A.J. Beechler (2017, 2018) as individual state champions from the Southern Pines school.

“Playing in big tournaments and being in a situation like that before helped,” Van Paris said about his approach into the 18th hole. “Actually, playing for a team gets me much more nervous than playing for

4A from page 10 say to myself, ‘You’ve been here before, you know what to do, you’ve learned from your experiences.”’ Van Paris shot an even-par 72 to edge Hampton Roberts of Panther Creek and 9th-grader William Webb of Raleigh Broughton by one shot. Robert Gefaell of Winston-Salem Reynolds, who was 3-overpar, finished fourth. As a team, Pinecrest shot 20-over to beat Reynolds by 11 shots. Charlotte Myers Park finished in third, 14 shots off the pace. Van Paris won a state title in the 8th grade while at The O’Neal School, a private college prep school in Southern Pines, and two state team titles there, but decided to transfer five minutes down the road to Pinecrest for the 2019-2020 school year. However, the state championships were cancelled last year because of the COVID19 pandemic. “We had a good team and we thought we had a really good chance to win it all last year,” Beechler said. “So, this year was like redemption. With COVID everybody feels like they missed something last year. To us, it felt so good to be there at the end and to win. For everybody to just play golf and be here was such a blessing. For our kids to become a part of history at such

an historic and special course -- that is so loved by Pinehurst -- is just a great feeling.” Van Paris had played Pinehurst No. 2 more than two dozen times over the years prior to the state championship, but the 15-year-old Webb’s experience on the Donald Ross gem was confined to a practice round just two days prior to the state tournament. “He came home and said ‘wow, that was the hardest course I’ve ever played,” said father Woody Webb. “He kept score and all he would tell me was that he broke 80. But I’m sure just playing that practice round saved him 5-6 shots, and maybe more.” In fact, the youngster was leading heading into the final hole four groups ahead of Van Paris and poised for a major upset, but missed the green to the right, short-siding himself, and he would eventually three-putt for a double bogey. “I didn’t think about being a ninthgrader, I just went out and played,” Webb said. “What I love about golf is you can grind for as long as you want, and get to play courses like this.” Webb shot a 66 at Cutter Creek in regional play. “He works hard at it, works every day,

and he likes the big time, he really does,” said Broughton coach Steve Smith. “I told the other coaches they are going to get tired of seeing this young man.” Van Paris had gotten word from the Pinecrest coaching staff of Webb’s troubles on the final hole as he prepared to tee off on the par-3 17th hole with a slim lead. “When I heard that I started trying to play a little conservative, and didn’t do a great job of that on 17,” he said. “I hit it in the bunker and then I made a mess of that hole. But on the 18th hole I hit a great drive and then put it in the middle of the green so it made the walk up 18 feel a little bit better. “It was a grind, and even if I would have had my absolute best stuff it still would have been a grind on Pinehurst No. 2,” Van Paris said. “I was pretty proud of the way I hung in there. I hit a few shots that I feel like I don’t normally hit too often, but overall I played great. More importantly, to win it as a team was an even better feeling.” In the end, the Van Paris transfer to Pinecrest paid off as he’ll play college golf in the SEC at Vanderbilt. “I can’t wait for college golf; hopefully it will be a lot like this, playing for a team on a pretty big stage,” said Van Paris, who

plays out of the Country Club of North Carolina. “I have put in a lot of work,” he added. “It is one of those things that I kind of dedicated to the sport of golf the last few years and these are the moments you practice for, and the reason anybody who plays in these types of tournaments practices for and works hard all the time, to get a feeling like this. To know that my hard work is paying off is amazing.” Van Paris will now hit the amateur circuit over the next few months before heading off to Nashville, playing in events such as the Sunnehanna Amateur, Northeast Amateur, North & South Amateur at Pinehurst and U.S. Junior Championship on his home course this summer. “Coming to a school with a bunch of great players took the pressure off of me,” Van Paris said of Pinecrest, which went undefeated this season. “They made me better, which is the coolest part. We all want the best for each other and they were all extremely supportive, so to come into this type of culture made it so much easier.” “We all came together as a team -- it’s not just Jackson,” Beechler added. “But Jackson has a commitment, a desire to win deep inside. And he produces.”

Fazio’s design at High Hampton first new golf course in North Carolina in five years

onsidering his stellar work across North Carolina, it’s only fitting that favorite son Tom Fazio would be behind the design work of the first golf course to open in the state in five years. The “new” High Hampton was unveiled in late May to its members, and will start taking resort play in early July. The previous site of the golf course housed a 6,002-yard executive layout designed by George Cobb. The course, which features a massive rock-faced wall, had no sand traps and didn’t have much flair. Fazio, who still has an office in Hendersonville, was tapped to come in and create what will be his 19th golf course in the Tar Heel state and fourth in the Cashiers area of Jackson County. “Without question it’s a new golf course,” Fazio said told Triad Golf Today. “I was just asked that by the owners the other day. They asked, ‘what do we classify it as?’ First of all, you classify it by how much you spent, so what do you think it is? They spent a lot, a lot of money. But that’s what it takes. Nobody would call 14

this course an addition or a renovation. It’s a totally new golf course. “From the land that was golf that we did use we added another 40 percent more land to that envelope to create the golf course that is now there,” added the Hall of Fame architect. “It’s off the charts. I say it is Pebble Beach quality.” Prior to High Hampton, the last new golf course to open in North Carolina was Compass Pointe in 2016 in coastal Leland, south of Wilmington. It was designed by Rick Robbins. Fazio’s portfolio in the Cashiers area itself is beyond impressive, with the likes of Wade Hampton (1987) -- recently ranked as the No. 1 golf course in North Carolina by Golf Digest -- Headwaters (1999) and Mountaintop Golf and Lake Club (2006). Champion Hills is also in nearby Hendersonville. High Hampton has been a summer retreat in the North Carolina mountains for nearly a century. The property was originally constructed on 450 acres in the late 1800s. In 1922, Mr. E. Lyndon McKee and his wife, Gertrude Dills McKee, of Sylva, renovated the property, adapting it into the High Hampton Inn, which later would

become known as High Hampton. High Hampton currently resides on over 1,400 acres near the Nantahala National Forest. High Hampton is a partnership of passionate families and groups dedicated to revitalizing the iconic Cashiers destination. The team behind Blackberry Farm, along with guidance from the Beall Family and Sandy Beall, oversaw the revitalization of the historic inn, cottages and restaurants within the inn, while Arlington Family Offices and Daniel Communities, Blackberry’s partners in the overall property project, focused on the redevelopment the golf course and development of new club amenities and private ownership opportunities. Fazio said existing homes were on the property, but that 200 additional lots sold out before the course, with spectacular views of Rock Mountain, Chimney Top and Whiteside, opened May 20. “I think High Hampton will be compared to Wade Hampton, but it’s very different, which is also good,” Fazio said,. “And Mountaintop is a couple of miles away as the crow flies, and that’s different, too. They are very different environments; they face adjoining mountains but

they look different ways, with a rocky face mountain different than a chimney top hill. If you look at all the courses we’ve done in North Carolina, from Champion Hills to Wade Hampton to Mountaintop to Eagle Point, they are all different, they are all custom individual courses. None of them look alike, which is our general M.O., and that’s what we like doing.” Fazio, who turned 76 in February, said expectations of golf course designs have certainly changed over his lengthy and brilliant career. “When we did golf courses in the 1960s the best response you could get as an architect was ‘when this course matures it’s going to be very, very good,”’ Fazio said. “Well, today that is failure because the day it opens people compare it to the best place they have ever been because there have been so many new golf courses created in the last 30 years. If you look at North Carolina, and go play one of my brand new courses like High Hampton, what are they going to compare it to? Well, Wade Hampton. Where is Wade Hampton ranked? Well, best in the state. That’s all people care about, but that’s our job.” www.triadgolf.com

hat’s more memorable -shooting a career-low 28 or making your first hole-in-one? That was the question Shane Vestal had to ponder after he accomplished both May 5 in an outing at Silo Run Golf Club. “I’m not really sure,” he answered. After taking a moment to think about it, he added, “I’m probably more proud of the 28. There have been a lot of people that make holes-in-one, but I don’t know if many people have shot 28.” Vestal, who resides in the Surry County township of Lowgap, began his round with three birdies, then a par before carding an ace on the 85-yard fifth hole with a sand wedge. Roger Adams, playing in the threesome, told Vestal he was 5-under through five. “That’s when it kind of hit me,” Vestal said. Vestal narrowly missed birdie chanc-

es on holes 6 and 7, and made another par at 8, leaving him with only the par-5 ninth to play. “I told my son (15-year-old Lucas) if I can birdie here, I can shoot in the 20s,” he said. After a perfect drive to the middle of the fairway, Vestal hit a fairway metal up the hill to the elevated green, some 220 yards away. “The wind was a little into me and off the right and I usually hit a little draw anyway. I aimed at the right side of the green. When I got up there, it was three feet away,” he said. The eagle landed for the 7-under-par 28. Why no back nine for a chance to better his career 18-hole low of 65? “I was off work that Wednesday and I told my son that I would pick him up from school and we’d go play nine,” Vestal said. “It was getting late in the afternoon and we had already said we were just going to play nine.” And a half round turned out not half bad. Guilford takes third in NCAA DIII nationals By STEVE WILLIAMS

uilford rallied from ninth place after the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship to place third, 24 shots behind Illinois Wesleyan. The Quakers spotted Wesleyan a 12-shot lead with a first round 302, but then followed up with 286-295-296 to steadily climb the team leaderboard in the event played at Oglebay Resort and Golf Club in West Virginia on May 11-14. But Illinois Wesleyan proved impossible to catch while finishing at 1,555 (290-286287-292), the lowest score in the NCAAs since 1998 and its second straight title. The Titans won in 2019 and last year’s event was canceled due to COVID-19. Methodist finished runner-up at 1168, 13 back of Illinois Wesleyan and 11 ahead of Guilford. The third-place finish marked the Quakers’ fourth straight top-five in the NCAAs. Guilford was led by seniors James Mishoe and Jack Lee, who tied for 12th at 295. Fellow senior Addison Manring was a shot back at 296 and tied for 15th. Manring, who played his high school golf at McMichael, shot 78-74-72-72. Louis Lambert, another senior, had the Quakers’ low round of the tournament with a secondManring round 69, but settled for a tie for 57th at 205. Sam Davidson, a freshman from Asheboro, counted for Guilford in the first two rounds with 74-72, but he ended with 83-77 and tied for 62nd. Basil Boyd, a senior from Martinsville, tied for 15th with 296 (75-74-72-75). He made the cut individually after his team was eliminated after two rounds. Guilford earned its automatic berth to the nationals by winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship in late April at Bryan Park’s Champions Course. The Quakers edged Hampden-Sydney by two shots. Guilford trailed HampdenSydney by two shots after two rounds of the 54-hole tournament, but Mishoe fired a final-round 66 to carry the Quakers to their 18th ODAC championship. 212 (73-73-66), one shot back of HampdenSydney’s Hunter Martin (73-69-69). Lambert and Davidson tied for eighth, and Manring and Lee tied for 11th in the 57-player field.

Hinnant 7th at Sun Belt Peter Hinnant wrapped up an outstanding junior season at Louisiana at Lafayette with a tie for seventh in the Sun Belt Conference Championships. The WinstonSalem native had four Hinnant top-10s during the season, including a best T-5 last September at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate. He finished with a 73.1 average in 27 rounds, highlighted by six rounds in the 60s. He tied a school record for the lowest score, a 64 in the second round of the Louisiana Classics in March.

Wake Forest headed to NCAAs Wake Forest was among seven teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference to earn berths in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. North Carolina, N.C. State, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Louisville also will represent the conference May 28-June 2 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. The field includes 30 teams. Seven teams are the most ever from the ACC, breaking the previous mark of six, which was accomplished five times. Wake Forest will be making its 46th appearance in the NCAAs after placing third at the Cle Elum, Wash., Regional. East Tennessee State won the regional by 10 shots over San Francisco with Wake Forest ending 12 back with 850 (278-287285). It took a score of 858 or better to advance. Alex Fitzpatrick, a junior from England, led the Demon Deacons with a secondplace individual finish, firing 67-68-71. Parker Gillam, a senior from Cary, tied for 11th, sophomore Mark Power tied for 19th, senior Eric Bae tied for 22nd. Freshman Michael Brennan tied for 39th. All five players had their score count at least once. The NCAA championship features 72 holes of stroke play, with a cut to the top 15 after 54 holes. The top eight teams will then advance to the match play portion of the event.
