A Ross Trilogy Architect Kyle Franz ready to add Southern Pines Elks Golf Club to list of Sandhills successes By DAVID DROSCHAK

ith dozens of Donald Ross-designed golf courses scattered across the state of North Carolina from Asheville to Wilmington, golf enthusiasts have debated for decades the best of the best. One Ross course that has often flown under the radar has been the Southern Pines Elks Golf Club, especially over the last decade as the maintenance budget has dwindled on an historic layout designed more than a century ago. Potential buyers have come and gone – including prestigious McConnell Golf -- only to see deals fall apart at the 11th hour. There is now another serious suitor, and a closing on the property is expected to be executed soon. On Dec. 17, members of the Southern Pines Elks Club voted to sell “substantially all the assets” of the golf course property to Kaveri Investments, an investment group whose partners include Kelly Miller, the CEO of nearby Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club and Mid Pines Resort -- two other spectacular original Ross designs. . “I’ve always really loved the Southern Pines course,” Miller said. “It’s a phenomenal routing and one of the really cool creations by Ross. When I first moved to the area in 1981 there was a group of us guys that rotated playing between Pine Needles and Southern Pines and Whispering Pines, so I played a fair amount of golf there. “I even played in the National Elks Tournament there, which I won so many years ago,” added Miller. “In the last 15 years or so we tried to see if we could do something with them and it didn’t work out, and 2-3 years ago we also did a presentation and thought we had finally done something, and I don’t know what happened with it. So it has been a series of a little bit of disappointments with not being able to get anything done.” Continued on page 7 Photos by David Droschak

I remember my old boss (famed architect) Tom Doak saying he thought it was a rookie architect or a young architect’s dream come true to work on that course. It is going to be a lot of fun.” The Southern Pines Elks Golf Club measures just 6,354 yards from the tips, but plays much longer. There are three par 3s on the front nine and there is just one hole – the 542-par 5th hole – that measures more than 500 yards. “It has tremendous topography in terms of changes in elevations and lots of rolling hills,” Miller said. “There are very few holes there that are flat. You can see some of these little Ross features that have now grown over time.” A large lake in the center of the property borders a half dozen holes and adds additional character to an already accomplished layout. “One of the things that needs to be done is cutting down of a lot of www.triadgolf.com

that stuff done during the winter time – so the look of it will change this coming winter,” Miller said. “Then the summer of 2021 we would go in and work on the greens. There are number of greens there – maybe four or five -- that kind have been altered significantly by John LaFoy in the 1990s where we would have to come back in and start from scratch. But a lot of the other greens are really in pretty cool shape that we would modify just a little bit. It will take us until September 2021 to where we are done with it all.” “Yes, there are a few greens that are just out of character with the original Ross style,” added Franz. “However, we were able to find some plans to show cross-sections of what they were compared to what the heights are today so that gives us some flexibility to do some cool stuff.” The course is “short” by today’s standards, but adding length is not necessarily a goal of the Franz restoration. “There is plenty of acreage out there,” Franz said. “The way I always look at it is we’re not trying to chase length just for length purposes; we

just want the holes to play the way Ross originally intended. That’s my goal. “We really have no desire to go over there and make it a 7,000-yard course,” added Miller. “It will be what it is, which is a really cool and fun golf course where Ross was the master, where it’s fun for the average golfer yet a challenge for a good player.” Franz is excited to tackle yet another Ross gem in his backyard. Franz is from Oregon, but Miller convinced the upstart architect to move into a house adjacent to the 18th tee at Pine Needles. Needless to say, Southern Pines Elks Golf Club will get the “personal touch” by Franz. “There is not a weak hole on the property,” Franz said. “They are sound golf holes all the way through. We would like to center in on the period of architecture that Ross was most active. It will be one wing of his style that we haven’t done yet. I was always committed to doing whatever project came first, so it was Mid Pines, Pine Needles and now here we are in the early 1900s at Southern Pines. I can’t wait to get started.”

Operation 36 Golf North Carolina-based firm making a world-wide name for itself By BRAD KING

ernersville’s Peyton Wyatt started playing golf two years ago when he was 7 years old. After he immediately began showing progress, Peyton told his father, “Dad, I want to get into some tournaments.” With his son playing in his first few competitions, father Alex Wyatt met a few other parents who told him about Operation 36 Golf, a North Carolina-based, on-course development model and coaching program. Operation 36 is designed to take a beginner from their very first round of golf to becoming a lifelong golfer. Beginners play nine holes starting 25 yards from each green in events run by a facility’s professional staff. The challenge is to shoot par 36 — by taking four strokes or fewer on each hole. Once the golfer shoots 36 or better, they progress to Division 2, and start 50 yards from each green. All progress is tracked in the Operation 36 Mobile App. The challenge continues until the golfer can shoot par 36 from all 10 divisions — with the final division being 3,200+ yards for nine holes. Peyton and his sister, Emma, who is 8 years old, started participating in Operation 36 at The Cardinal by Pete Dye in Greensboro. Last March, McConnell Golf transitioned The Cardinal from a private club into a semi-private facility, and the club introduced Operation 36 Golf soon thereafter. The Cardinal professional Logan Peck said he uses much of what Operation 36 provides on its Website, but he also incorporates a lot of his own twists as well, such as getting the golfers on flight scope and getting their yardages. “But it’s doing a lot of games, warm-ups,” Peck said. “I have learned playing is becoming a lot more fun than practice and just hitting range balls. They love breaking 36 and moving to the next level and feeling that level of accomplishment. Continued on page 11

Operation 36 from page 10 “I use the Website and log in their practice sessions and events with me, and they can do their own individual practices and play dates,” Peck said. “Most practices are just getting them to show their grip, posture, etc., and then play games to make it fun, you then check off all the tasks they needed to pass each rank.” Designed through a decade-plus of study and experimentation, Operation 36 Golf is the brainchild of a pair of PGA professionals, Ryan Dailey and Matt Reagan, who first teamed up to start a long-term junior golf development program at Keith Hills Golf Club in Buies Creek. Their original goal was to increase family participation at the golf course with a focus on developing the juniors as athletes first, as well. Several incarnations later, they arrived at Operation 36 — an on-course development model with a 6-Rank curriculum program in which students and parents track their progress via an app, while professionals can interact with a student’s progress online and keep them motivated outside of class. “It sounds a lot easier than it is,” Alex Wyatt said. “It’s a great program that I have recommended to a lot of people. They have a great little group of friends. One girl, who is among the best 12-year olds maybe in the state, has been a tremendous influence on my daughter.” The program has gained widespread popularity during the past several years, growing to more than 525 facilities in eight countries and approaching 30,000 participants. Thirty-three clubs in North Carolina (46 total in the Carolinas) are currently using Operation 36, including 10 in the Triangle and five in the Triad. Other notable courses in the Carolinas include Colleton River, Pinehurst Resort, Kiawah Island and Greensboro Country Club. Operation 36 is based on a fun and structured plan to introduce beginning adults and juniors to playing the game on the course, with technology to support the entire experience. “Operation 36 is just a way better structured program,” said PGA Tour winner and Operation 36 parent William McGirt. “(With) the progression through the yardages and being play-based, everything is focused around playing golf.” During their odyssey, Dailey and Reagan have been recognized for their efforts by receiving the 2013 and 2014 Carolinas PGA Youth Player www.triadgolf.com

Development awards, as well as being voted best teachers in the state of North Carolina by Golf Digest in 2018 and 2019. Old North State Club, a Tom Faziodesigned private club along a 2 ½-mile peninsula of Badin Lake in New London, didn’t run an Operation 36 junior program, but the club boasted roughly a dozen men and the remainder women among its 40 participants. “The program, I feel, was primarily geared towards engaging youth in golf,” said Old North State golf pro Adam Davey. “At our facility, we don’t have many juniors who live out here full-time so (professional) Danielle (Haislip-Allen) and I kind of took the program and modified it somewhat. It’s a great program in that you can tailor it to your specific needs.” Old North State engaged in a three-month program, offering each participant a class every week, running three separate time slots to keep a low student-teacher ratio along with several on-course Operation 36 9-hole events that ran concurrently with the classes. There was a final presentation and cocktail event at the end. The classes would have a specific focus each week that would attempt to allow the students to pass their oncourse, nine-hole events; shooting 36 or less gross for nine holes from a designated yardage on each hole. “Obviously, we don’t expect our golfers to all of a sudden be able to shoot even par on the front side from the red tees, but we saw a huge benefit that stu-

dents were focusing on their short game and scoring better as a consequence,” Davey said. “We didn’t entirely neglect the longer clubs, but we beat chipping and pitching and putting to a pulp.” “I rarely missed what turned out to be one-and-a-half long sessions two times a week for, I believe, for eight weeks,” said Old North State member Brenda Niparts. The Niparts moved to Badin Lake about 17 years ago and Brenda joined the Women’s Golf Association, but she says golf was never a chief priority. Niparts says Operation 36 has jumpstarted her interest in the game. “We always got help with our individual needs through a variety of techniques and games,” she said. “There was plenty of opportunity for questions. My favorite

parts were the days that we started at either 25, 50, 75, or 100 yards on each hole, and hole out from there. We then entered our score into our app on our phone and if we did not meet the expected score, we had to do it again.” Niparts added that more than once she overheard her husband telling his friends how much time she was devoting to golf. “Some of our better women golfers remarked to me that they could see much improvement in my game when we played on our regular play days,” Niparts said. Indeed, at the end of the season she was named “Most Improved.” “I hope to start again this spring and I encourage all the beginners and the experienced golfers to join,” she said. “There really is something for everyone.” Another Old North State member, Ann Piehl, and her husband, Don, have lived at Uwharrie Point and been members of the Old North State Club for 17 years. She signed up for the full Operation 36 course and attended all but a couple of the sessions. “I especially liked the swing lessons that moved from putting to irons to fairway woods and drivers,” Piehl said. “I think the biggest attribute to the whole program was that it motivated me to come out to the range and also to play more rounds of golf in order to practice many of the drills we were taught.” Back at The Cardinal, Alex Wyatt said Operation 36 has made learning a challenging game much more enjoyable for his son. “A year ago, before Operation 36, Peyton would get frustrated when he shot 50 to 55, now he gets frustrated when he shoots 40 to 45. It’s been a nice turnaround,” Wyatt said.

A determined pair of ladies return mountain course to its former luster By BRAD KING

rett Miller has worn many hats in the Carolinas golf industry. He’s a lifetime member of the PGA of America and former longtime president of the Great Smokies Mountain Golf Association, the area’s regional co-op of golf course owners promoting golf tourism. Miller also played collegiately at Western Carolina University, where he was team captain and a threetime All Southern Conference selection, and is a member of the university’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Today, his company, MMA Golf, which Miller founded in 1996, focuses on buyer and seller brokerage, and consultation in the southeast region, where Miller works with a wide variety of clubs and owners. Miller says he has worked for just a few women in ownership positions at golf facilities during his three decade-plus golf course consulting and brokerage career — and all were involved through male family members or inheritances. So, when Reems Creek Golf Club in the heart of Weaverville, N.C. — 10 minutes north of downtown Asheville and picturesquely carved into the valley of the Blue Ridge mountain range — came up for sale last year through a bankruptcy, Miller assumed the deal would eventually be settled by either a closure, or a typical purchase by a local businessman or golf course industry professional.

But then, developers began discussing the idea of purchasing the golf course, closing it and instead developing more product for the area’s red-hot residential market. That was when a pair of determined women, Summer Greene and Pam Faerber, stepped forward and grabbed the reins. Greene and Faerber had recently retired and followed their dream of moving to a golf course com-

munity, between holes No. 13 and 14 at Reems Creek. Theirs was one of about 200 homes in the community nestled on 130 pristine acres. Reems Creek Golf Club was designed by Hawtree & Sons, a British firm that sculpted a layout reminiscent of the look and feel of the Scottish Highlands, including wall-to-wall bentgrass, in a relaxed and secluded setting that captures the area’s splendor and rustic beauty. The strategic holes offer plenty of elevation change, doglegs, blind shots and beautiful views, along with beautifully manicured greens and breathtaking views. Reems Creek tests your course management, along with your physical fitness with its sloping fairways and elevated greens. Yet during the past few years, the golf course — which is semi-private and has averaged 23,000 rounds, based on a season that runs from April to early November — had lost its luster. Most of the bunkers had become unplayable and not maintained. After heavy rains, many low points on the course were becoming water logged. The owner, Warrior Custom Golf, which had a golf equipment business and owned approximately 15 golf courses around the country, filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in early 2019. Enter Greene and Faerber. “If the course had been sold to a developer, it would have been devastating to the community and local golfers,” Greene said. “So, this is what our retirement now looks like. We’ve never owned a golf course or run a golf course, so we’re approaching this from new perspective.” Greene and Faerber closed the deal on the last day of 2019 and jumped feet first into renovations of the golf course, as well as the clubhouse. They are in the process of turning 35 sand traps into grass bunkers, with fescue grass, pompous grass or wildflowers, and have recently finished a major storm water, drainage and sinkhole project. They ground down all the tree roots on the cart paths, and a new fleet of golf carts with GPS is nearing arrival. “It’s a new day at Reems Creek,” Greene said. In addition, the new owners have just gutted the 4,000-square-foot clubhouse and are planning to triple the size of the bar, renovate the kitchen, reduce the footprint of the pro shop from 1,500 square feet to 800, and change the formal restaurant seating to more living room or family kitchen style. They are also busy constructing a 6-foot, linear, two-sided fireplace as a signature piece, and adding a fire pit and casual seating, so members and guests can enjoy the amazing sunset views. Greene said their goals are to focus on “pub grub” type food and alcohol sales. They are also adding craft draft beer to the bar menu. “The previous owner just did cans and bottles,” she said. “We will have very limited menu but have theme dinners monthly – making it a place for people to hang out after golf or early dinner and enjoy comfortable relaxing atmosphere.” Continued on page 15

Greene said they are only stocking basic goods such as tees, divot tools, balls, hats gloves, towels and some polo shirts in the pro shop. A grand re-opening at Reems Creek is planned in March. “This is quite inspirational to all for the game of golf,” said Miller, who worked with Greene and Faerber in their acquisition of Reems Creek. “They were very thorough in their investigation of the property and the ramifications if it was repurposed in a negative way. They took the lead, as their passion for the community is unsurpassed.” Greene and Faerber also recently hired Diane McHeffey as the club’s new director of golf and teaching pro. Recognized as the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional National Teacher of the Year, McHeffey was founder of the WNC Junior Golf Association, has coauthored golf lessons and tips with Dottie Pepper as well as Meg Mallon, and most recently served as head professional of the Newport Vermont Country Club. In the past 30 years, McHeffey has played on the LPGA Women’s Future Golf Tour, served as head professional at the Sombrero Country Club in the Florida Keys, and at one point owned her own 26-acre golf and game facility in Hendersonville. At Reems Creek, she will be teaching privately as well as offering clinics, league play and just plain fun stuff. McHeffey said her plan is to make golf at Reems Creek more inclusive and introduce new people to the sport because, “we believe golf is good for the whole family.” “The previous reputation of this course was it was not women friendly,” Greene said. “I experienced that first hand when we moved here last year. We wanted to send a message to the women in the area — we have 170 LPGA amateurs in our local chapter — that we were serious about engaging them.” Greene said Reems Creek started with zero members, yet within the first month had 45 founding members. “They were paid in full based on blind faith and a vision,” she said. “The winds of change are taking place in golf, with women like Summer and Pam blazing the trail,” Miller said.

Asheboro Country Club starts new chapter in rich history By STEVE HUFFMAN

sheboro Country Club is under new ownership and management, a move those affiliated with the golf course hope brings stability and improvements. “The excitement among the locals is big,” said Lee Souther, the course’s superintendent. “The word is getting out that good things are happening here.” Souther isn’t saying exactly who owns the course, other than that it’s an area individual who wants to remain anonymous and let improvements to the once-proud facility speak for themselves. “We’ve been given the green light to fix the things that need to be fixed,” Souther said. “I’m excited to be in a position where I feel improvements are happening.” Asheboro Country Club, opened in 1944 and re-designed by architect Jim Bivins, has had a rocky history in recent years. Warrior Golf Management was the most recent owner. The company had purchased the facility out of bankruptcy in 2010. Prior to that, the course was owned by Carolina Fairways LLC, a group that purchased it in 2001. But Warrior itself declared bankruptcy about a year ago, and Green Golf Partners, a course management and development company based out of Danville, Ind., had been overseeing the operation since. Souther said Green Golf Partners was largely a hands-off operation. The new owner, he said, closed on the purchase earlier this year. Souther said the sale includes about 180 acres and a pro shop, ball room, bar and meeting room. At the center of the course is a 22-acre spring-fed lake. Souther, 37, came to Asheboro Country in May 2018 when Warrior still owned the course. Despite his relative youth, he’s got about 20 years invested in golf course management and maintenance, having served as superintendent or assistant superintendent at such courses as Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C., New River Golf Club in Beaufort, Cherokee Plantation in Yemassee, S.C., and The Links at Mulberry Hill in Edenton. Souther said Asheboro Country Club has been in need of some tender loving care for quite some time. “It had been let go, and that’s what I like, coming in and returning things to the 18

way they once were,” he said. Souther said prior to the most recent change in ownership, fixing and repairing was a tough undertaking. The course, he said, lacked the equipment needed for even some of the most basic maintenance. “We’ve got tons of new equipment now,” he said. “I can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel. I’m excited about the new owner and all the changes he’s got planned.” For the time being, Souther is concentrating his efforts on the course’s tee boxes and bentgrass greens, places where improvements are most critical and obvious. He said improvements are also in the works to the course’s irrigation system. Other improvements soon coming to the course, Souther said, will be a cart barn and a covered structure where weddings and similar undertakings can be held. The facility’s new name – Asheboro Country Club and Event Center – reflects those planned changes. One thing the course hasn’t suffered, Souther said, is a lack of play. The course has always remained relatively busy, he said, with 16,000 to 18,000 rounds played

per year. Souther said he hopes improvements to the course will bump that number higher. He noted that on a recent weekday morning, 60 golfers had already either teed off or booked tee times by 11 a.m., a number that has him optimistic good things are in store for the course. “We’ve always had a loyal following,” Souther said. “The locals want to see the course succeed.” Steve Henderson is one of those locals. He has been a member of the country club since about 1990 and is a member of “The Gangsome,” a group whose members get together two or three times a week to play. There are some pretty good golfers in the bunch, Henderson said, but the main reason they congregate, and play is for the camaraderie and good-natured kidding they share with one another. The group’s membership has ebbed and flowed, maxing out at about 24 golfers, but falling off significantly at other times. The rise and fall, Henderson said, is largely associated with the condition of the course. No one, he said, enjoys playing a tract that isn’t well maintained.

“We’ve had our ups-and-downs with prior management,” Henderson said of the work that’s gone into keeping Asheboro Country Club a quality course. He said he and other gangsome members are optimistic the course has turned a corner with its new ownership. “They’re trying to capture back the beauty of the place,” Henderson said. Henderson is a semi-retired forester. He’s so committed to seeing the course succeed that he’s taken a job working there two or three days a week, helping in any way he can. “I wanted to come out and help pretty it up again,” is the way Henderson explained it. He said he feels basics like improving the irrigation system, a commitment to a chemical application plan and a renovation of the clubhouse will go a long way toward seeing that dream become a reality. “I just see it being good for the golfing community,” Henderson said. “Folks are itching for the golf season to return so they can come back around and get back to playing at Asheboro Country Club.” www.triadgolf.com

Wake Forest runner-up at Houston

With one of its upperclassmen enjoying an opportunity to play in a PGA Tour event, Wake Forest turned to its youngsters for a strong showing when the Demon Deacons opened the spring portion of their schedule with a runnerup finish. Team veteran Parker Gilliam received an exemption to play in the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open on Feb. 20-23, so he missed Wake’s trip to the Golf Club of Houston for the All-American Intercollegiate. Led by top-10 finishes from sophomore Alex Fitzpatrick and freshman Mark Power, the Demon Deacons shot 278-290276 and ended four shots off the pace of Sam Houston State in the 13-team event. “Finishing 20-under is a good way to start the spring season,” said coach Jerry Haas. “The golf course is a very difficult course and we played very well (in the final round). Sam Houston State had an outstanding week and as a coach I wish there was one more day.” Gilliam, meanwhile, shot 75-73 in his first PGA Tour appearance and missed the

cut. He had earned an exemption by winning the White Sands Intercollegiate in the Bahamas last November. An opening round 60, which set a school record, propelled the junior from Cary to a three-shot win, his second at Wake Forest. In the fall, the Demon Deacons won the Rod Myers Invitational and also had a pair of seconds and two fourth-place finishes. Wake Forest is ranked sixth in the country by Golfweek heading into early March.

Top 10s for Panthers High Point University sophomores Brandon Einstein and Olivia John began the spring schedule with top-10 finishes in separate tournaments. Einstein, the Big South Conference Freshman of the Year, used a final-round 69 to climb the leaderboard to a tie for fifth place in the Georgia Southern Individual in early February. Einstein, who played prep golf at Forsyth Country Day, had begun the final round tied for 12th. The 69 at Georgia Southern University Golf Course in Statesboro was two shots off his career best. John, part of the three-time state championship team at Rockingham County High, led HPU to a second-place finish in the Old Friends Invitational in mid-February at Tampa Palms Golf Club in Tampa, Fla. She bounced back from an openinground 82 to fire a 2-under-par 70 and then a team-best 74 on her way to a tie for sixth place. It was her first-ever top-10 finish and the 70 matched her previous standard set in a tournament last September.

Greensboro native named first coach at Johnson & Wales By STEVE WILLIAMS

ohnson & Wales University of Charlotte is adding men’s and women’s golf to its athletic program and Greensboro native Chris Jones has been tasked with putting the teams together. Jones, a Page High School graduate who played collegiate golf at Lenoir-Rhyne from 1993 to 1997, has more than 15 years of experience in the golf industry. He’s served as assistant coach for the golf teams at Belmont Abbey College the last four years. Prior to his years at Belmont Abbey, Jones was on the golf staff at Grandover Resort while also coaching the high school teams at Northern Guilford. He was the Nighthawks’ coach when the boys won the state championship in 2010. He also guided the Northern girls team to state runner-up finishes in 2011 and 2013. Ten of his former players went on to play collegiately. “It’s an honor to be named the first head golf coach at Johnson & Wales of Charlotte,” Jones said. “I want to thank Trudi Lacey, Director of Athletics, for giving me the opportunity to start these two programs at this outstanding university.” Johnson & Wales is a member of the Eastern Metro Athletic Association which is part of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. Not affiliated with the NCAA, the USCAA is the governing body for approximately 100 small schools across the country. They stage a national golf championship in October at Penn State University’s course. “We are excited to have Chris join our staff. He brings excellent experience, and is a dedicated coach,” said Lacey. Although the university doesn’t offer athletic scholarships and he only started his new job in early February, Jones is already at work putting together a roster for the fall. “It’s going to be a challenge coming from the DII ranks (Belmont Abbey),” Jones said. “We’ve got to find players who are interested in the school.” The fact that Johnson & Wales is one of the top culinary arts schools in the country could be a draw. “Golf and hospitality go hand in hand so I think it will be a good fit here,” Jones said. The campus is in downtown Charlotte, only a few blocks from Bank of America Stadium. A home golf course hasn’t been determined yet. www.triadgolf.com

Super seniors now in the mix at Triad Golf Today Tournament of Champions By STEVE WILLIAMS

uper seniors are one of the fastest growing segments of competitive golf and now the 65-and-over players will have their own tournament within a tournament at Greensboro National. The 24th annual Triad Golf Today Tournament of Champions and Interclub Challenge is set for April 4-5, and for the first time a super senior championship will be staged alongside events for regulars and seniors. The individual competitions are played in conjunction with a four-man team event representing Triad-area clubs and golf associations. The foursomes can be made up of any combination of regulars, seniors and super seniors. The Carolinas Golf Association is awarding points to the top finishers in all three of the age divisions.

“We have seen more and more tournaments adding super senior divisions,” said Rusty Harder, the CGA’s Director of Rules & Competitions. “That’s the beauty of the game that you can play in your later years and still be competitive. It’s good that we’re recognizing that and giving them the opportunity.” Harder said it wasn’t too many years ago that super senior events didn’t always fill up. “We’ve gone from our Carolinas Super Senior tournament where we could just take 112 golfers and execute a shotgun start to now, we have 170 or 180 with a waiting list,” Harder said. “It’s getting more and more competitive with more eligible golfers in that division.” Beginning just its fourth year, there’s a separate CGA points ranking for super seniors. Before that they were grouped with the age 55-and-over division. Continued on page 27

There hasn’t been a back-to-back winner since. Curtis Brotherton, playing out of High Point Country Club, will be attempting to end that streak this year. “Defending will be the goal,” Brotherton said. “Hopefully I can get it done again. I’m trying to bring the same mindset I had last year.” Brotherton had played Greensboro National only a few times before last year’s tournament, so he’s hoping the 2019 experience will be a plus. “It will be good that I’ll have a little more knowledge of the course,” he said. “It had been many years since I played in a qualifier there.” He was a wire-to-wire winner – well, sort of. He grabbed a three-shot first-round lead with a 73 but saw it evaporate in the first four holes of round two. He survived an out-ofbounds penalty on the par-5 third and a four-putt double bogey on the par-3 fourth by playing steady golf the rest of the way and closing with a 75 for a one-shot margin over Stoney Creek club champ Marco Nieto. “I got off to a terrible start in the second round and I really had to battle back,” Brotherton said. “I lost my lead very quickly. But my mental game is much better than it used to be. Back in college (he was a fouryear starter at High Point University) I would have gotten angry at myself and probably freaked out. You can have a lot of ups and downs in a golf round so I kept trying to tell myself that last year.” Brotherton has already proven his ability to defend a title. He’ll be going for a three-peat in the High Point Memorial later this spring. Bryan Park will be back to defend its team championship with Brock Elder and Craig Cathey leading the foursome. Elder, playing in the Interclub division last April, had the low score of the tournament, shooting 73-70. Cathey won the senior championship with 70-79, holding off Randy Beeson, Hugh Quinn and Steve Crouse by two shots. Paul Slomkowski and Andy Bower will round out the Bryan Park foursome. Maple Chase, the 2018 team champ, finished two shots behind Bryan Park last year. This year’s tournament is the third straight year the CGA will be awarding ranking points to the top finishers. The top five regulars, the top three seniors, and now, the top three super seniors, will all be awarded points. The non-senior players who are members of the interclub teams, who are not eligible for the T of C (open only to club champions or other tournament winners from the previous year) will have their own individual division. The winner of that competition – Brock Elder last year – will become eligible for the T of C in 2021. Take a tract like Foxfire just west of Pinehurst. This property features two Gene Hamm courses running through perfect Sandhills topography. The bones of these courses are terrific, but it’s hard to keep up the maintenance with a dwindling membership and the low price daily fees to keep the players coming. Harvey wins eighth CGA player of the year award

cott Harvey held true to his promise of reducing his tournament schedule to spend more time with his family. Heck, he didn’t pick up a club for four months. But once Harvey started practicing hard in March it was game on. The Kernersville native won three times in 2019 to capture the Richard S. Tufts Men’s Player of the Year award presented by the Carolinas Golf Association. Harvey has captured the honor every year since 2011 except in 2018, when Kevin O’Connell of Cary was honored. “It still means as much to me as it did the first time,” Harvey told Triad Golf Today. “When I went up there and to accept the award I was in tears again. I’ve never gone up there and not been so emotionally overwhelmed.” Harvey began 2019 with a late April victory at the 2019 George L. Coleman Invitational, carding rounds of 71-74-70 for a one shot win. “That’s one of the biggest strokeplay tournaments in the world and it was my first tournament of the year,” Harvey said. “That gave me a good jump start to the year.” In May, Harvey, the 2014 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, won the U.S. Men’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship with partner Todd Mitchell. “Any time you win a USGA event that’s extremely prestigious,” Harvey said. “Those aren’t easy to come by.” Harvey then capped off a remarkable three-month run in June by winning the George C. Thomas Invitational at Los Angeles Country Club for a fourth straight year, his second-round 67 propelling the 41-year-old to victory. “Those back-to-back-to-back wins really set me up for a great year,” he said. I would say so. By the fall, Harvey made it to match play at the 2019 U.S. MidAmateur Championship, claimed runner-up at the 2019 Crump Cup,

$ and finished off the year as a member of the winning Carolinas Team at the 74th Captain’s Putter Team Matches. “Through June I played in three tournaments to where in the past I may have played in seven,” Harvey said of his reduced schedule. “My quality of finishes was just higher. “Once again, I have not played since the middle of October,” Harvey added. “At the beginning of March I will start practicing hard. I have been able to relax more because in my mind I don’t really have anything to prove to anybody.” In addition to Harvey, Russ Perry of Winston-Salem was another Triadarea winner, capturing the player of the year award in the Super Senior Men’s division. It was the second straight season Perry, 65, has won the award. In August, Perry battled from four-shots back in the final round to capture his seventh CGA title at the 11th Carolinas Super Senior Championship. Perry played a bogeyfree final round to shoot a 4-underpar, 68. He also finished first twice and fourth twice in his four CPGA events in 2019.

lmo Cobb is a legend in Alamance County golf history. He built three golf courses in the area and owned and operated Confederate Acres (now Southwick) in Graham and Sourwood Forest in Snow Camp. He also built Quaker Creek golf course in Mebane. Cobb, now in his 90s, still plays golf a couple times a week and on Nov. 22 he made his seventh career hole-in-one. It was a perfect 7-iron from 99 yards on the eighth hole. It came on one of the first holes he designed more than 50 years ago. “My eyes are getting bad and I saw the first half of it,” Cobb said. “The other three guys (Mike Ward, Bill Hansen and Trevor Butcher) were standing there watching. I knew I hit it as good as I can hit it for a change. It was covering the pin all the way.” It was his second ace on the same hole, and one of three at Southwick. His first came on the fourth hole in the early 1970s. He also notched three aces at Sourwood Forest and one at a course in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Cobb said he purchased 50 acres from a friend a few years before he ever thought about building the course. “I was over at Shamrock and we couldn’t get over the fact they had so many players. I told the guys that I believe I could build one (a course) so I went home and started working on it.” Cobb started the project in 1967 and opened the front nine in 1969. The back nine, which has the Haw River as a border on the east side, opened five years later. Cobb said the course was renowned for its great greens and drew a lot of play. He noted that when he was operating the course, they often ran out of carts on weekends. Cobb plays in a senior group a couple times a week at Southwick. When the weather’s good, they tee it up on Wednesdays and Fridays. He’ll be out there at age 92 this spring trying for ace No. 8.
