Salem Glen partners with Five Points restaurant Clemmons course now offers hamburgers to filet mignon

By Steve Huffman alem Glen has entered a partnership with Winston-Salem’s Five Points restaurant to offer dining at the country club in western Forsyth County. Five Points at Salem Glen is open for dinner from Wednesday through Saturday evenings. The hours of operation and more will expand in coming months. “It was definitely a missing part for us,” said Darren Mangus, who bought Salem Glen in Clemmons a little more than a year ago and has been working to improve the club’s amenities. He noted Salem Glen has a fine golf course, and said its golf academy and swimming pool are among the best. “But we didn’t have nicer dining,” Mangus said. “We do now.” Five Points is a popular Winston-Salem eatery known for a wide variety of menu items. Its restaurant on South Stratford Road won’t be affected by the addition of Five Points at Salem Glen, the hours of operation there remaining the same. But Mangus said the addition of the restaurant to Salem Glen will do much to improve the country club. He referred to its introduction in March as a “soft opening,” with news of the restaurant advertised solely by word of mouth.

Its first customers have been primarily those who live in the surrounding neighborhood. “The initial go has been very successful,” Mangus said. “We were looking for the right restaurant and we think we’ve found it.” Jack Welker and his wife, Pam, are managing partners with Five Points. Welker said he felt Salem Glen was a good fit for Five Points, noting the restaurant has been doing catering work there for years. “We decided the time was right,” Welker said. “We’ve been opening gradually, making sure we do things right. There’s no need to rush things.” He said Five Points at Salem Glen will offer basically the same menu items as the South Stratford Road eatery. Welker described the menu as “cuisine Southern regional,” Five Points offering everything from hamburger to filet mignon. The restaurant also advertises a lobster avocado salad, Reuben sandwiches and crab cakes. The more upscale restaurant won’t be the only thing Five Points is opening at Salem Glen. The Welkers are also operating Jack’s Bar & Grille, which offers sandwiches, salads and “turn food” for golfers who work up an appetite during the middle of a round. It’s all in a sports bar setting. The grill will soon be opened seven days a week and offer a Sunday brunch. All the dining facilities are open to the public, not just golfers.

Wake Forest rallies to finish third at ACC Championship

ake Forest finished third at the 2017 ACC Championship at Musgrove Mill Golf Club in South Carolina. The Demon Deacons jumped three positions from sixth place in the team standings as the final 36 holes were contested on the same day due to the forecast of inclement weather. Duke won the title, shooting 14-under over the three rounds. Clemson was the runner-up at 2-under, followed by the

Demon Deacons at 3-over, highlighted by a third round 286, the lowest round of the 18 holes contested in the afternoon. Paul McBride shot a second-round 71 before a final round 3-under 69 to finish in a four-way tie for first place at 5-under for the tournament. In the playoff to decide the individual title, Virginia’s Jimmy Stanger birdied the first hole of competition to win the championship. North Carolina’s Ben Griffin was also in the playoff after opening the tournament with a 67.

“I was so proud of Paul and how he competed,” said head coach Jerry Haas. “He made some big shots and put himself in position to win an ACC championship. Obviously third place isn’t what we wanted, but these guys played hard.” Will Zalatoris posted his fifth top-five finish of the season, tying for fifth place at 4-under, one shot out of the playoff. He shot the low round of the second round with a 4-under 68 before ending the day with a 71.

Restoring the character and spirit of the golf experience By BRAD KING

he “Home of American Golf” is getting a facelift. After making history in 2014 by hosting both the Men’s and Women’s U.S. Opens on its legendary No. 2 course, Pinehurst Resort & Country Club is continuing a master plan to further restore the original character and spirit to the Pinehurst golf experience. Pinehurst Owner and CEO Bob Dedman said it was the overwhelmingly positive feedback the resort received for the work on No. 2 prior to the back-to-back U.S. Opens that encouraged his team to explore options that would represent a continuation of that effort. Ben Crenshaw and his architect-partner Bill Coore restored No. 2 in 2011, regaining many of the elements that had been altered over the years from the original Donald Ross design. Now, architect Gil Hanse, who was chosen over many of the world’s most renowned designers to craft The Olympic Golf Course in Brazil, has been tapped to redesign Pinehurst No. 4 and build a short course. Unfolding in several stages over the next few years, the plan also includes restoring Ross’s original characteristics to Pinehurst No. 1 and No. 5, while enhancing its driving range — “Maniac Hill” as the country’s first practice area is affectionately referred — and “Thistle Dhu,” Pinehurst’s 18-hole putting course currently adjacent to the range and short-game practice area. “We think this is a thoughtful approach to the evolution of golf at Pinehurst, and we think Gil Hanse, with his timeless and natural design philosophy, is the right person for the project,” Dedman said. “There’s a unique character at Pinehurst because of the landscape Donald Ross found when he arrived in 1900. Back then, he may have been a minimalist by necessity, but we’re making a choice to present our historic golf courses in a natural state similar to that era.” Pinehurst consists of nine courses, with Nos. 1 through 5 surrounding the main clubhouse, while Nos. 6 through 9 are a short shuttle ride away. “The restoration of No. 2 was the game-changer," said Pinehurst President Tom Pashley, who was vice president six years ago when the Donald Ross original was restored. “When it became what it is, we started looking at everything differently.” The No. 4 project is scheduled to begin this fall, with the course reopening in the fall of 2018. Hanse’s design and routing, which seeks to create a landscape reminiscent of Pinehurst No. 2, will include exposed sand and native wire grass, wider fairways, natural topography and Ultradwarf Bermuda greens. “We think this approach will create a more authentic, visually interesting golf course and one that feels in tune with its unique surrounds,” Hanse said. “When you look at No. 4, you look at the scale, and the topography on it is really stunning. It’s more dramatic than what Bill (Coore) and Ben (Crenshaw) and Donald Ross had to work with on No. 2. We think as you look through the great vistas that come about there — there’s a beautiful lake in the center of the property — and there’s a lot more undulation to it. If we reintroduce these characteristics — the sandy, scrubby nature

Pinehurst from page 6 — on a scale that fits this piece of property, I think the potential is really pretty exciting.” Hanse said there were plenty of ways to incorporate Ross’s original spirit into No. 4. “(No. 4) is a golf course that’s been changed and altered. There’s no way to take it back to the original Ross design; a lot of those holes are gone,” Hanse said. “But looking at the Ross designs, his plans, were there elements of that that we could bring back into it that will make the course truly feel a lot more like Ross? So, some crosshazards, some more diagonal bunkering, looking at the green complexes and getting them to sit softly into the landscape, maybe some slight elevation changes as he did on No. 2.” The original Ross design of No. 4 opened in 1919. Robert Trent Jones Sr., made changes in the late 1950s and his son, Rees Jones, did the same in the early 1980s. Tom Fazio made significant alterations in 1999. “It’s just going back in and reimagining the look of it to fit in with what Bill and Ben did on No. 2 — that whole Pinehurst feel to it,” Hanse said. “As with any projects, if you’ve got sand underneath, we’re excited, so we’re excited to be playing in that sand.” Meanwhile, the new short course will be routed on 10 acres of property formerly occupied by the first holes of Pinehurst Nos. 3 and 5. Both of the greens from the original holes will remain in the short course routing. Hanse has sketched nine holes ranging in distances from 65 to 117 yards and featuring many of the elements players face on the restored Pinehurst No. 2, integrating the native sandscape and wiregrass commonly found at Pinehurst during Ross’s era. The short course’s greens will blend

into the landscape with tightly mown runoffs in the surrounds. Some of the greens will feature subtle contours while others will have a plateau style. The bunkers will have the rough-hewn nature of the original Ross bunkers and will also blend seamlessly with the exposed sand surrounds. Play on the short course will be easily viewed from the historic South Veranda of the Pinehurst clubhouse. “Pinehurst’s short course is designed to be enjoyed by all golfers, including regular players, beginners, friends on a buddy trip and families out to enjoy the game in a relaxed setting,” Hanse said. “The course will be a fun alternative or addition to a round while at the same time honoring the heritage and traditions of golf at Pinehurst.” Last December, Pinehurst closed No.

3 and began making changes to several holes before reopening in April as a par68 course. The former second hole of No. 3 was reversed and will become the first hole of No. 5. In addition, No. 1 and No. 5 will eventually undergo restoration work designed to return elements of Ross’s original designs. As for Maniac Hill, Pinehurst is planning to incorporate more native characteristics that will allow the range to seamlessly blend with the surroundings of No. 2 and the redesigned No. 4. Due to Thistle Dhu’s popularity and the work planned on No. 4, the 18-hole putting course will be enlarged and moved closer to the clubhouse. “We believe the beauty of the short course and Thistle Dhu will provide a magnificent front yard for Pinehurst,” Hanse said.

Last summer, the Pinehurst clubhouse debuted “The Deuce,” a new bar and grill that overlooks No. 2’s 18th green. Already, The Deuce is beginning to garner honors. Golf Inc. magazine recently revealed its annual Golden Fork Awards for some of the best dining options in all of golf and honored The Deuce with first place among new restaurants in golf. While the view overlooking the 18th green of No. 2 is perhaps the obvious selling point, Golf Inc. credited The Deuce’s tantalizing menu, specialty cocktails and craft beer selection for raising the bar for restaurants in golf. “The Deuce is adorned with vintage photographs and other memorabilia from Pinehurst No. 2,” the magazine wrote. “The historic resort went all out to bring the facility’s heritage to life.”

Chewing up the competition Maple Chase “rediscovered” with unique iron beavers

ark Slawter often wondered the purpose of his brief stint away from the game of golf. Now he knows. “I worked for St. Lawrence Homes in Raleigh for four years as an on-site agent for a neighborhood in Wake Forest and I watched these machines clear lots for about a week,” said the former N.C. State All-American golfer. “I saw how fast they did it, how efficient it was, and what blew my mind was it was just one guy on a machine and nothing had to be hauled away.” Now, years later, as the general manager of Maple Chase Golf and Country Club, Slawter’s task has been to resurrect a club that was once named Pinebrook, and was in such financial disaster that it conducted a logging exercise in 2008 in the middle of the course to get some hard, fast cash. When hired 3 ½ years ago, Slawter faced a bevy of potential improvement projects. Where would he spend his money? And on what? Constantly floating around in his mind were those fabulous mulching machines, dubbed by some as iron beavers, and an idea of how they could improve the historic Ellis Maples layout. Slawter began doing his homework and eventually traced down Mark Lee of ML Hydrocut in the Johnston

County town of Clayton. Billed as North Carolina's Commercial Land Clearing, Brush Cutting & Mulching Innovator, Slawter floated his idea of clearing out some overgrown areas and received a quote. “We committed to five days,” Slawter said. “About three days into those five days I knew that it was really working well and that we were going to want more than the five days.” New owner Lynn Murphy was out of the country so Slawter had to think fast. “I had to figure out quickly how I was going to keep them around and pay for it,” Slawter said. “So, I can up with a glorified pre-paid cart plan campaign that I had about 12 or so members sign up for it. That helped fund the next week.” The 10-day project, on several holes on the back nine, turned into a sideshow for Maple Chase’s membership. “The members would come from work and jump in a cart and ride out and all congregate wherever they were working and just watch these guys work and just see these vistas opening up slowly. We were all trying to imagine what it was ultimately going to look like. It was a really cool two weeks,” Slawter said. “I am not going to lie to you, I was pretty nervous because I struck my neck out a long ways on this one,” he added of the $50,000 project completed in early March. “I wasn’t sure what the end result was going

to be, but seeing the member reaction was amazing. I remember we were about halfway through the project and we were up on the 14th tee, and by this time you could see the majority of the front nine from the 14th tee, and in the past you couldn’t see anything from the 14th hole -- it was lined with trees. One of my current members whose father was a member here for many, many years and has since passed away was sitting on a cart and said something like ‘Man, I wish my dad could see this.’ That really did it for me, once I heard that it took all the anxiety out of me and worry and I thought ‘We’re doing the right thing here, this is going to be good.’ We just kind of ran with it from there.” The real test, though, would be the return of the big boss, Mr. Murphy. “He was pretty much gone the whole time. I was very eagerly awaiting his reaction. He was blown away, he loved it.” Lee’s machines virtually grind everything in their path, producing a mulched area that can eventually be grassed and then mowed. In addition to trees, stumps, small bushes and weeds, Lee’s crew ran into their fair share of lot golf balls, too. “There were golf balls galore,” said Maple Chase superintendent Len Fawcett. “There were places where literally you could not walk in there and look for your ball,” added Slawter. “I didn’t like that from an ascetic standpoint, from a turfgrass standpoint; it just didn’t sit well with me. And it was bad from a pace-of-play standpoint. We’re very proud of our golf course in a sense that our average round for a foursome, even walking, is well under 4 hours. I can only think this will enhance it now. There is very little ball hunting that has to be done now.” Continued on page 11

Fawcett says the clearing work has created even somewhat of a links look to Maple Chase. “The sight lines are just so much better now with these trees gone. I can now stand on No. 13 green and see No. 2 green,” Fawcett said. “It’s views, it’s air flow, it’s sunlight – it just feels better, it just feels more inviting, it really showcases just how good a piece of property this is,” added Slawter. “It’s kind of like ripping and bandages off after all these years and finding out probably what Ellis Maples saw back when he created it.” The job took approximately 180200 hours of machine work, Lee said. “We loved doing it,” Lee said of the clearing and mulching work. “Golf courses are well manicured places so that’s where we like to put on a show and shine as far as doing very good quality work.” “My wife says I’m OCD, but I take a lot of pride in what we do and so do my guys in making the customers happy,” he added. “Each job has its own hurdles and we try to work with them on those hurdles.” The reviews of the clearing work done by Lee and his crew have been over the top. “Anytime you can do a capital improvement it’s sort of like ‘OK, we’re going to spend X amount of dollars how big an impact can X amount of dollars have?”’ Slawter said. “With this project, I can’t imagine getting more bang for my buck for what we spent over two weeks and the amount of reaction and chatter that has come from it. “We also did some cart path work over the winter and it looks great but it’s one of those things that needed to be done, just a like a new roof. The tree stuff is something the members are going to tell five of their friends about. They are not going to tell five friends about new cart paths. As far as having an impact on the energy of Maple Chase I can’t think of anything we can do in that short of period of time without having to close the golf course that has that big of an impact.” And Slawter hinted that more clearing may be on the way this winter.

Summerfield firm’s high quality golf canopies producing bottom line results

fter a long career in the technical textile market supplying products to the consumer products and automobile industry, Michael Ambler was looking for a change, something that would keep him closer to home with an enjoyable environment and friendly customer base. Ambler had always wanted to own his own business and was intrigued in 2016 when he met the owners of what is now called CoverShots Mobile Canopies International. “I liked the product, I saw the potential and liked what it stood for,” Ambler said of the golf canopies company. And Ambler’s family had a common thread with the original owner – skin cancer. “The original owner was a golfer and developed skin cancer on his forearms and wanted to continue to enjoy hitting balls, and also saw this as a need in the market place,” Ambler said. “The first units were sold in 1998 and it started very small. “I have a parent and my wife has a parent that has had skin cancer due to sun exposure, and I enjoy the outdoors and just liked everything about the product. It is a high quality item and I wanted to continue that process.” Ambler’s clients run golf’s gamut – from high-end private clubs to muni tracks to resorts to test facilities and universities. His international clients include an Army base in Germany, a resort club in Singapore, and Middle East golf courses in Israel and Abu Dhabi. On the day I caught up with Ambler on the phone he was in the car driving to Georgia, on his way to see another potential client or two – a man on a mission to sell, sell, sell out of his Summerfield headquarters, which opened last March.

“I love golf, used to play a lot and I quit when I started traveling around the world because any free time I had was spent with my family,” he said. “So, I really didn’t play for 10-11 years. I’ve really enjoyed this past year getting back into that environment. My assessment when I bought the company was there was a lot of market that was still there.” He was correct. “I’ve been spending a lot of time in the marketplace with the customers. It is a niche market, so what we will eventually want to do is expand it into other markets. Right now we’re just trying to service our customer base in the golf industry and grow that business and getting it out to more customers.” One of those “expansion” markets has included a CoverShots unit purchased by the Mesa, Ariz., Police Department for their gun range. Ambler is also tapping into the university market, recently signing on the University of South Carolina. He also has units at the University of Texas, Texas A&M, Oregon and Tiger’s alma mater, Stanford. However, the wheelhouse for CoverShots is driving ranges or practice facilities, many seeing as much as a 30 percent increase in business after purchasing one of the canopy units.

“They don’t want cancellations, people not coming out because it’s too hot or it is raining,” Ambler said. “Ranges want to see a return on their investment. “When I go to see a potential client, I ask them what do you want to accomplish. How big is your range? Do you want it to generate revenue or accommodate member needs? Do you want it to make you a more competitive club, which it automatically does if you have one?” CoverShots supplies two options – a PTC (Professional Teaching Canopy) designed for up to three golfers and an instructor, while an Eclipse unit has coverage from 41 feet up to 104 feet, protecting up to 11 hitting stations. All units are custom build to client specifications. “We offer a lot of different options, like a retractable top vs. a fixed top, motorized vs. non-motorized, or painted vs. non-painted,” Ambler said. “All of our units are hot-dipped galvanized steel, which means they will not rust or corrode. Our units are intended to last 20-plus years. It is not an item you turn over every 3 years and have to replace. “We respect that our customers are making an investment so we are always looking for ways to help support the purchase. One way we are doing this is working with semi-private, daily fee, and commercial range clients on a concept to sell very nice looking logo space on the canopies, which is a perfect billboard and generates upfront revenue from businesses in the area who would like to advertise,” Ambler said. “Clients can then change the tarp out and have an ongoing revenue stream. We’ve already made an install that has six logos on it.” Ambler’s private club lists includes Congressional, Westchester and Trump International. That’s some pretty heady company. “We’re very proud of our client base and it brings some instant credibility to people who might be an international customer and a club that benchmarks itself against some of those people,” Ambler said. “We are in some really, really exclusive high-end clubs that don’t even want us to say, but at the same time we have a mission and a passion to get this product into clubs that service the local communities or to business owners with a commercial driving range or the teaching profession, who needs comfort in his so-called office. We don’t want that revenue from lessons to be interrupted.”

Shines Light on Eagle Point

he reputation of Wilmington’s Eagle Point Golf Club and some of the club’s prominent members were the deciding factors in the PGA Tour tapping the prestigious private enclave as a one-year replacement venue for the 2017 Wells Fargo Championship. Three years ago, during the same press conference that Wells Fargo announced it had extended its contract as title sponsor of the popular PGA Tour event through 2019, Tour officials announced the tournament would be contested at Eagle Point. The event’s regular venue, Charlotte’s Quail Hollow Club, is preparing to host this summer’s PGA Championship — one of the tour’s four major championships. Nestled a serene country mile from the Figure 8 Island security bridge that transports the rich and famous to the tranquil splendor of the state’s most vogue coastal getaway, Eagle Point was the brainchild of the late textile magnate Billy Armfield and a select group of founding members that included former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack.

During its near two decades of existence, Eagle Point has forged a reputation as the closest thing to Augusta National around the Southeast. Renowned modern-day golf course architect Tom Fazio designed Eagle Point just a few years following his impressive redesign work at Quail Hollow. The Tour’s one-year move demonstrated the PGA Tour’s faith in a pair of Eagle Point members: Bobby Long, the club’s current president — who also serves as chairman of the Piedmont Triad Charitable Foundation Board of Directors and oversees the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship in his hometown of Greensboro — and Johnny Harris, also an Eagle Point member and longtime president of Quail Hollow, which has hosted the Wells Fargo Championship since 2003. The 2017 Wells Fargo Championship, played May 1-7, received an added boost when world No. 1 Dustin Johnson committed to play in his first event since withdrawing from the Masters with a back injury. The winner of 15 career PGA Tour titles, Johnson returns to the Wells Fargo Championship for the

first time since 2011. A South Carolina native, Johnson’s best finish at the Wells Fargo Championship was a tie for 29th in 2010. In his two other starts, he missed the cut both times. “We are glad that Dustin is OK and will be returning to the PGA Tour,” said Wells Fargo Championship executive director Kym Hougham. “Local fans who have followed his career since he was an amateur player in this area are in for a real treat. He leads a group of players, currently in the field, who are among golf’s most dynamic and talented players in the world today.” Along with Johnson, there were six players among the top-20 in the world scheduled to compete at Eagle Point, including No. 11 Adam Scott, No. 12 Alex Noren, No. 13 Jon Rahm, No. 14 Patrick Reed, No. 20 Phil Mickelson, Hall of Famer Ernie Els and recent RBC Heritage champion Wesley Bryan. Previous Wells Fargo champions include two-time winner Rory McIlroy (2010, 2015), Rickie Fowler (2012), Tiger Woods (2007) and Jim Furyk (2006). In last year’s tournament at Quail Hollow, James Hahn held off McIlroy, Fowler, Mickelson and Justin Rose before

defeating Roberto Castro in a playoff for the title. This month’s event at Eagle Point represents the first time a PGA Tour event has been played in Wilmington since the Azalea Open was held at Cape Fear Country Club in 1971. Former PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said for him the event at Eagle Point would represent one of life’s cycles. “When I was 8 years old, I attended my first professional golf tourney in Wilmington with my grandfather,” Finchem said. “I got to see Arnold Palmer for the first time live. I'm doubly excited.” Event organizers forecast about 30,000 spectators at Eagle Point during the four-day tournament, and estimate a minimum of $30 million will be injected into the local economy along with millions of dollars in charitable donations. "Over 940 million households and [more than] 200 countries will be watching Wilmington, North Carolina," Long said. “We get the chance to showcase Wilmington to the whole world. Amateur tours were labor of love for Bruce Hallenbeck By STEVE WILLIAMS Ready golf, ready golf, ready golf. Those words became the battle cry of Bruce Hallenbeck just before 100 or so players were sent out to their respective holes for the shotgun start in that week’s Senior Amateur Tour or Golfweek Amateur Tour event. It was that way for 19 years from February-October. Hallenbeck didn’t need a microphone. His booming voice was enough. That voice grew silent in 2016 when cancer sent Hallenbeck to the sidelines. His last welcome at a tour event came in early April that year. A little more than a year later, his courageous battle with the disease ended on April 15. He was 68. Hallenbeck, a native of New York and a resident of Randleman, was the driving force for the Central Carolina tours, making the section one of the largest in the country. His events were well organized and the fact that he greeted every player by name when they checked in for a tournament was part of the success story. The tour regulars knew it was a labor of love. “I live a dream life,” Hallenbeck said in a 2010 interview with Triad Golf Today. “To do this for a living is the greatest

thing. I never lose sight of that, and I owe it all to every member of the tours.” Tom Kubla played in many of Hallenbeck’s events and became his assistant for 11 years before stepping in early in 2016 to keep the tours going. “I try to do everything the way he did after watching him 13 years,” said Kubla, who is now director of the senior tour. “But I can never fill those shoes.” The amateur tour was the brainchild of Dennis McCormac. He started it in Charlotte in 1995 and branched out to other areas a couple years later. There are now 45 Golfweek Tours in the country. Hallenbeck answered a newspaper ad to start tours in the Triad, Triangle and Sandhills. “He was my go-to guy when I was just starting out,” McCormac said.

“And he was a mentor to a lot of the guys who have been with me 10 or 15 years.” McCormac credited Hallenbeck for getting the Senior Amateur Tour going three years after the regular tour was launched. “Without him I wouldn’t have started the senior tour,” he said. “He and I basically started the senior tour together. That first year, I had about 50 guys (in Charlotte) and he had about 50 or 60. After that, it just took off.” There are now 15 seniors tours in the country. Hallenbeck’s enthusiasm was quickly evident when a prospective new member inquired. “The players knew what to expect from Bruce day in and day out,” McCormac said. “He made sure you had a great time when you were out there. It was just incred-

ible the way he treated all his players. By the time you played two of his events, he knew you, where you were from and what you did for a living.” Hallenbeck also had a way of making awards presentations special. “He announced just about all of my national championships,” McCormac said. “He would take his time on every one of them. He didn’t just announce the name of the winner; he would have a story about it.” Two of Hallenbeck’s loves were competing on the golf course and playing cards. “He had an uncanny way of stringing more cuss words together than you’ve ever heard,” McCormac remembered of golf rounds with his friend. “And they would make sense. “He also holed out more shots than anybody I ever saw. He’d be playing a hole terrible and he’d hole out for par.” There wasn’t a national championship that didn’t include Bruce being the bank in the poker game. “He was one of a kind,” McCormac added. “He broke the mold. There will never be one like him ever again.”

Pinehurst gearing up for unique USGA championship in May

By David Droschak inehurst Resort & Country Club begins an impressive run of United States Golf Association events in late May, hosting the third annual U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship on courses Nos. 2 and 8. In addition to the Four-Ball championship, Pinehurst will host the U.S. Amateur in 2019 and the U.S. Open in 2024. Those events will bring the total number of USGA championships hosted by the resort to 11 dating back to the 1962. “The memories of our last two historic championships in 2014 are still fresh in our minds, and walking down the hallway here is such a treat every day, getting to relive those memories and all the USGA championships,” said 22

Pinehurst Resort president Tom Pashley. “After 2014 we were always asked, ‘What is the next big championship at Pinehurst?’’’ added Pashley. “At the time we didn’t have that next big answer. Now we have three future USGA championships on our calendar, allowing us to anticipate and have something to look forward to. None of us here take any of this for granted. It requires great effort and teamwork.” The Triad area has four of the 14 players in the 256-player field from the Tar Heel state, led by highly-decorated amateur Scott Harvey of Greensboro. In addition, Anthony Baker of Walkertown, Bryan Colquitt of High Point and Greg Earnhardt of Greensboro (the 2015 runner-up with playing partner Sherrill Britt) will compete in the championship.

North Carolina has also settled into quite a proving ground for USGA golf. In addition to the Pinehurst championships, the state will also hold the 2018 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Charlotte Country Club, the 2019 U.S. Senior Women’s Open at Pine Needles in Southern Pines and the 2019 U.S. Senior Amateur at Old Chatham Golf Club in Durham just in the next few years. The U.S. Amateur Four-Ball is a new event for the USGA but has already gained immense popularity among the best amateurs in the world, and has been played at some of golf’s iconic courses – The Olympic Club in 2015, Winged Foot in 2016 and now Pinehurst No. 2 on May 27-31. The U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship is open to teams (or sides) of amateurs with a Handicap Index not exceeding 5.4. Partners comprising teams (or sides) do not have age restrictions and are not required to be from the same club, state or country. What is the difference between fourball and foursomes?

In four-ball, matches are played in pairs (a player and a partner, called a side, against another player and partner), with each golfer playing his or her own ball on each hole. At the end of each hole, the player with the lowest score wins that hole for the side. Lambeth goes low in tourney wins

untingdon College senior Addison Lambeth will be entering the NCAA Division III nationals with high team and individual championship goals. The former Marine from Greensboro is ranked No. 1 in the country in D-3 as is his team. That’s despite a third-place finish in the conference tournament. Fourth-ranked Methodist won the USA South Conference Tournament by seven shots over 10th-ranked Greensboro with favored Huntingdon taking third, 12 shots off the pace. Methodist earned the automatic bid to the NCAA D-3 championship at Mission Inn Resort in Florida on May 16-19 and Huntington will no doubt receive an at-large bid. It would be surprising if Greensboro didn’t also get an invitation when the field is set May 8. Lambeth settled for a tie for 13th in the conference tournament after coming off back-to-back championships in his previous two events. A back-nine 29 – featuring seven birdies – capped off a 64 in the final round of the Emory Spring Invitational in early April. He had shot back-to-back 67s a week earlier in the Wynlakes Invitational and has averaged 71.1 in 23 rounds this season. He has posted par-or-better scores in 14 rounds with seven rounds in the 60s. Huntingdon has won five tournaments this season. Last spring, Lambeth tied for first in the national championship but lost in a sudden death playoff. As a team, Huntingdon placed second. ❖❖❖ Lydia Randell is headed to the NAIA nationals. A sophomore at St. Andrews, Randell used a 70 in the first round to highlight her tie for first in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Direct Qualifier. She followed with a 77 and tied with Milligan’s Cassidy Gibson, who was the winning team. Matt Nelson another first-time winner of T of C

ith three former champions in the final foursome, odds were that the Triad Golf Today Tournament of Champions would have its first two-time winner since the year 2000. It didn’t happen. Instead, Matt Nelson of Winston-Salem became the 17th consecutive first-time champion of the 21st annual event. Nelson’s consistent play at Greensboro National Golf Club in the final round March 26 enabled him to move past Tony Byerly (the 2007 champ), Bret Kinney (2006) and Jeremy Ray (2016), who shared the firstround lead with 71s. Nelson shot 72-73 and emerged with a two-shot margin over Byerly and Ray. “I tried to stay focused and not bring any big numbers into play,” said Nelson, who has won the Pine Knolls club championship the last two years, and also won the 2016 Bud Kivett Memorial. “It was just a lot of twoputting and a lot of pars -- nothing really too exciting. I just stayed solid.” Meanwhile, big numbers early on the back nine ruined the hopes of Byerly and Kinney. Byerly had a one-shot lead until a series of mistakes on the par-4 12th derailed his chances. Kinney was within one shot at the turn but started bogey-bogey-double on the back. Ray, who won by two shots a year ago, had his big number on the front nine – a triple bogey on No. 5. Byerly, who had never previously played with Nelson, was impressed with his game. “He didn’t make any mistakes. Just straight down the middle,” Byerly said. “He didn’t do anything stupid or anything spectacular.” Byerly held the lead until his breakdown on the 12th. “I doubled 2 and tripled 12. That pretty much gave it away right there.” Still, he remained in contention and after Nelson bogeyed the par-3 16th, the margin was just one. But Nelson clinched it with a birdie-par finish. “I made a good birdie there,” Nelson said of his birdie at the par-4 17th. “I had about a 7-footer straight up the hill and it was one of few that I read correctly.” Dane Robertson, club champ at Dan Valley, finished fourth after posting the best round of the tournament, a second-round 70 for a major rebound from an opening 80. A 33 on the front nine keyed Robertson’s surge.

Nelson, who played high school golf at South Stokes, was a club champ at Hemlock Golf Club before he turned 20 and he played some collegiate golf at Guilford. Now at the age of 33, he’s hoping to play a lot more tournament golf, having fully recovered from a nagging wrist injury. Nelson’s play also helped Pine Knolls take the Interclub title, which was played in conjunction with the T of C. He teamed with Arlis Pike and Kyle Stockton. “It’s a great group of guys and there’s a lot of good competition there,” Nelson said of the Pine Knolls men’s association. “Arlis and Kyle were great teammates to have.” It was Pine Knolls’ second title in the last three years. In 2015, with a different scoring format, Pike and Stockton teamed up with Jake Lowder, Randy Beeson and Brandon Berrier on the winning fivesome. Sedgefield Country Club won the Interclub title three times (2008, 2010 and 2013) and Pine Knolls now joins Pennrose Park, Forest Oaks and Brookwood as twotime winners. Ten three-man teams competed, each counting the best two of three nine-hole scores each day. That method was modeled from the USGA’s State Team Championship. It was tight throughout before Pine Knolls emerged with a two-shot margin over Southwick and Reynolds Park. Southwick, led by Byerly and interclub medalist Tanner Gross along with a contribution from Scott Trent, held a one-shot lead after the first round and expanded it with a 70 on the front nine Sunday. A 78 on the final nine allowed Pine Knolls, which posted a closing 71, to make up seven shots. Pike and Nelson both birdied the 17th hole and that proved to be the margin. Gross carded 75-72 and ran away to a five-shot victory in the Interclub individual race with Pine Knolls’ Stockton taking second with 78-74. Mike Roland won the senior division with a pair of 73s. Reynolds Park teammate Jim Kemerling shot 74-74 and tied for second with Pike, who posted 76-72. Dennis Cooley, who provided a firstround 75, teamed with Roland and Kemerling on the all-senior Reynolds Park team. The senior division was added to the tournament mix in 2012 and Roland won that year. He became the first two-time winner in the age 55-over competition. Meanwhile, Chris Logan still stands as the only repeat winner in the main event. He won three in a row beginning in 1998.

It was only fitting that the long-awaited breakthrough would come at Augusta. After all, that’s the place where miracles happen. It had been far too long for Garcia. We’ve watched him mature from a wideeyed supposed-to-be phenom to a grizzled veteran who had almost accepted he would never win on the biggest stage. Well, no more. The monkey is off his back and it’s going to be interesting to see what happens now. Is it a breakthrough or just a phenomenon? Of course, everything on the PGA Tour seems to be larger than life these days. Every time you tune into a tournament there is some new guy who looks as if he is going to be the greatest thing since Ben Hogan. You would think that 20-year veteran Christie Kerr might make the cover over first-timer Wesley Bryan at the RBC Heritage. Especially since she shot 62-66 in the final two rounds to set a course record and beat today’s LPGA phenom -- Lydia Ko -by three strokes. Nope, four columns about the Heritage and one-half page based mostly on wire reports and a less than flattering picture of the Lotte Championship winner in Kerr. I seem to recall having a conversation with an old golf writer wearing a bad hat about why there is so little coverage of women’s golf. “Yeah, we need to do something about that”, said the guy wearing the new hat I bought him because that other hat just had to go. Sound familiar, Aitch?

Fred Burchett, 84, scores his second ace this year

wo of Fred Burchett’s five holesin-one were made at Triad courses with names that are no longer on the map. Now, at age 84, he’s putting himself on the map yet again. It was Oct. 4, 1970, when Burchett scored his first ace at Piedmont Crescent Country Club. He saved a newspaper clipping that hails his hole-in-one on the 17th hole as the first ever at the new Alamance County course. Piedmont Crescent became Quarry Hills, Cedar Forest and Quarry Hills again before closing in 2015. His next ace came in the mid 1970s on the 17th hole at Bel-Aire, a course renamed Pleasant Ridge in 2004. He aced the same hole on July 11, 2006. After an 11-year hiatus, the Colfax resident was back on it March 20 this year when he found the cup on the third hole at Pine Knolls. Less than a month later, while playing at Olde Homeplace on April 17, he aced the third hole from 122 yards with an 8-iron. His teammates in the captain’s choice event – Ernie Horvath, Dick Drushal and Harry Denny – had watched Burchett chip in twice earlier in the round that began

with a shotgun start on the 17th hole. Burchett plays three times a week with a group that is now named the Bill Lankford Seniors, in honor of the late Maple Leaf course owner. The group played at Maple Leaf until it closed after Lankford’s death last fall. “We have several players over 90 years old,” Burchett said. “A lot of them don’t hit all the shots but they still enjoy playing and they can still play captain’s choice.” Here’s the rundown on the other great shots reported to Triad Golf Today since our April issue.

Wake Forest golf teams head into NCAAs with confidence

his spring in Winston-Salem, the lights glowed a bit brighter inside the Haddock House. The 2016-2017 Wake Forest men’s and women’s golf programs both finished the regular season with top rankings; the men finishing 8th and the women 14th. Over the course of any competitive season, there are many different ebbs and flows the players and coaching staff must navigate. Injuries occur, putts don’t drop, swings become out of sorts. For this current group of student athletes, the good times have outnumbered the bad. What makes these Demon Deacons so good? It’s not a trick question. Great golfers, of course. But, in what is considered one of the most individualistic of sports, college golf relies just as much on teamwork and camaraderie as scoring and short game practice.

Ask the professionals what they enjoy so much about playing in the Ryder, Presidents or Solheim Cups and, aside from the honor of playing for their country, they say the opportunity to be a part of a team is what makes it a special experience. Most reflect on the time spent in college golf when the game was not so much a grind, but companionship and fun. Will Zalatoris, a junior and semifinalist for the Ben Hogan Award, believes the men’s team is peaking at the perfect time of the season. The beginning of spring can be difficult as most of the golfers haven’t been playing much during the winter break, and it takes a while to get going and get back into peak shape. “We played really well in the Querencia Cabo Collegiate (-11 as a team on the final day); that’s when I knew we were going to be good. Coming back like we did, and sneaking into a third-place finish was exciting.” Men’s head coach Jerry Haas con-

siders individual efforts as a catalyst to bring the team together. “Each day it’s someone different who is the low player,” Haas said. “When you have five guys who are all capable of winning the tournament or shooting the low round of the day, the others can play in 1 or 2 under; that allows us to shoot 4 or 5 under for the day. Combine that over three rounds and it is simple to figure out a way to win or place high on the leaderboard.” Haas takes pride in the team’s throw-out stroke average. This is the one round out of the five which doesn’t count towards the team score (only the top four are counted). “It’s nice to be able to throw out a 71 or 72. If all the guys are playing well, it takes a lot of pressure off the team result.” Zalatoris knows that team chemistry is a direct reflection of its leader. “I’ll tell you, when you have Coach Haas at the helm, you know it’s going Continued on page 33

There’s never a dull moment with him.” Haas has a knack for making road trips less of a chore, and “the random stuff he does just makes us laugh and he tells stories we’ll always remember,” he said. No explanation on what exactly ‘random stuff’ can be; some things are best saved for the travel van. Another key for the team is eliminating wasted shots around the green. “As long as we spend time doing what we’re doing – chipping and putting, especially lag putting – just trying to save as many shots as we can, we will be okay,” Zalatoris said. Zalatoris leads the team with a scoring average of 69.92 with 26 rounds played. Paul McBride is second with 71.46. Last October, the women Demon Deacons found their stride, finishing third in the Cougar Classic and posting consecutive wins in the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational and Landfall Tradition. However, the women have been battling injuries over the spring semester, but head coach Dianne Dailey is proud of the way her team has hung on as they head into NCAA regionals. “We’ve had to play two tournaments with just individuals, and we were just barely getting the rounds in for qualification for the NCAAs,

which requires a minimum of eight rounds in the spring. So, now that we’ve met the criteria to play, we are focused,” Dailey said. The women struggled in the ACC Championship in Pawley’s Island, S.C., finishing 12th. Because of injuries to starters Antonia Eberhard and Sierra Brooks, a pair of walk-ons rounded out the lineup. Monica Schumacher, who recently joined the team in April, made her collegiate debut, while Anna Wears made her first ACC Championship appearance. Dailey appreciates the effort made by the women in this short-handed situation. “Coming into the tournament, Monica didn’t know anybody on the team before she went to South Carolina to play for Wake. The other teammates embraced her and made her feel welcome; they had fun and laughed a lot. I think that was a nice event, not for the score, but for the women to be together and come together as a team,” Dailey said. Sophomore Jennifer Kupcho leads the team with a 70.60 scoring average in 25 rounds played. Sierra Sims, a senior, follows with a 72.04 average. The men’s team won the opening event of the season last fall, the Rod Myers Invitational in Durham, by 11 shots (-23 total). Two more wins in March and consecutive second-place finishes rounded out the regular season in April.
