Area Gibson lives his dream at RBC Heritage Insider

ommy Gibson has made his mark in North Carolina golf over the last decade. He’s one of the more successful players on the Carolinas PGA circuit and has held positions at such prestigious clubs as Quail Hollow, Charlotte Country Club and for the last five years at Old Town Club in Winston-Salem. But a little piece was missing for the 32-year-old assistant pro. Gibson, whose father Tom played in two Honda Classic tournaments in the mid 1980s, had never played in a PGA Tour event. “I started playing tournament golf at 6, and ever since then I said to myself I was going to grind and try to get out there and make it,” the younger Gibson said. When Gibson won the Carolinas PGA Professional Championship last July he qualified to tee it up in the RBC Heritage on Hilton Head Island. In order to help him prepare for his dream tournament this April, Gibson traveled to South Carolina in February with a few Old Town members to log two practice rounds at Harbour Town Golf Links, a course Gibson had never played before. “The course was a lot different than it was in the RBC Heritage,” Gibson said. “It was pretty wet and the ball wasn’t going very far. I played as far back as you could go, on the edge of every tee box just to get the full affect to see how hard it could play, how long it could play. The yardage is pretty similar to Old Town, around 7,100, so I was really comfortable with the yardage. I was a lot more comfortable than playing a place like Quail Hollow, where it’s like 7,600 yards and I’m hitting a 3-iron into every par-4. My first initial though was

have like 200 people following us and you felt the ground shake it was so loud,” Gibson said of his chip-in reaction. “Brad came running at me and hit my hand so hard it was numb for about 30 seconds.” On Gibson’s sixth hole his approach shot hit the flag stick. “Brad looks at me and says ‘You need to write a book on your first 6-hole experience.’ It was so silly,” Gibson said. Gibson’s two-day performance was more than respectable as he carded a 73 (which included two three-putts and two out-of-bounds penalty strokes) and a 71 to miss the cut by four shots. After all the excitement, Gibson was back at Old Town Club, taking tee times, giving lessons and playing a round or two with the members – and dreaming. “Hey, Tom Lehman was a golf pro and ended up getting on the PGA Tour,” of the first three holes. Gibson even got looser on the first tee when a PGA Tour official started rattling off a list of clubs during an equipment check. There was one catch, the sheet the official was reading from were for Tom Gibson, his father, not Tommy Gibson. “The guy comes up to me and says ‘You need some better equipment,”’ Gibson said. “My caddie and I are looking at each other and said, ‘What is he talking about?’ It kind of hit me since I used to play my dad’s hand-me-downs that those must have been my dad’s clubs he used from the early 1980s. I went over to my dad and said ‘you’ll never guess what happened; this guy is rattling off all these clubs that I remember playing when I was 10. It was hysterical, and that got the day off really smoothly, to have that kind of chuckle right before I teed off was so cool.” Gibson’s first few holes of his PGA Tour life were beyond memorable. He almost chipped in on his very first hole, hitting the cup. “Half of my pitch mark was in the hole and the other half was outside the hole, and when it hit the edge of the cup it killed it and it rolled to within 4 feet.” It was a simple putt – downhill and down grain – straight in the hole. “If you just blow on the ball it was going to roll into the hole,” Gibson said. “My hands were shaking so badly. I barely made contact with the ball and I left it short and left. Brad just looked at me and says ‘Really, that’s how we’re starting the day? You’re going to hit it to 4 feet and then leave it short?’’’ That would have been the easiest birdie

Migliaccio’s Mulligan Wake Forest star re-imaging her future

milia Migliaccio can pinpoint exactly when she began second-guessing her dream. The Wake Forest senior, one of the top-ranked amateurs in the world, was on top of her game on the final holes of the North & South Women’s Amateur at Pinehurst last summer. “I birdied the last three holes to finish even par, but I didn’t feel that sense of triumph I thought I would feel,” Migliaccio says. “That was the first time I had thoughts of, ‘I don’t know if I want to do this as a career.”’ For so many years, Migliaccio was driven to be the best woman golfer in the world. She welcomed the practice, the travel, the competition. She loved every hotel bed at every tournament. She embraced all the self-discipline that excellence required. But when her final season of college golf began in January, the doubts 6

had turned into something much more. That’s when she turned to Demon Deacons coach Kim Lewellen, right there in the middle of the first round of the first tournament. “I said, ‘Coach, all I’m thinking about is I don’t want to do this professionally.’ I just kind of dropped that bomb on her,” Migliaccio says with a laugh. The decision caught her coach off guard. “Was I surprised? Very much so,” Lewellen says. “We discussed it in that round and the next two. By the time we finished that golf tournament, I think we both realized that she had more things she was interested in doing, and that seemed to be the best step for her.” With that, Migliaccio began reimagining her future. She immediately scrapped plans to attend Q-School in the fall, a long-awaited first step toward playing on the LPGA Tour. Instead, she enrolled in a two-year

master’s program in communications at Wake Forest. And even before she returns to campus in the fall, she will take on a challenge that combines two of her passions — golf and writing. Migliaccio, who in 2018 published a romance novel, Just an Illusion, will join the editorial staff for the Golf Channel website as a reporter and editor. “It has been really cool to see so many things line up as soon as I listened to what the Lord was telling me to do,” she says. The soft landing has eased the transition, but Migliaccio is candid about how she got to this point. The years of competitive golf took a toll. Along the way to becoming the No. 3-ranked amateur in the world, Migliaccio took care to keep her golf career and her life in proper perspective. In addition to conventional coaches, she worked with experts on the mental side of the game. She also enjoyed the unwavering support of

her mother, Ulrika, an all-American golfer at the University of Arizona in 1992. As her college years progressed, Emilia cultivated a calm, in-themoment game. She won regularly in collegiate tournaments and thrived at the international level, winning a gold medal at the Pan-American Games in Peru in 2019. She was a complete player, a first-team all-American. Missed shots did not define her rounds, and golf did not define her individually. And yet, as her senior season approached, she could tell that the balance was not right. “A lot of confusion and frustration, a lot of anxiety, too,” the 22-year-old says. “After practice and before practice, I was always thinking about golf and my swing and my putting stroke, and I wasn’t able to turn off the switch. I could see it affecting my family even when I was trying to hold it in, but they knew I was really Continued on page 7 www.triadgolf.com

I could just see the pain in their eyes when I spoke about my frustration.” Migliaccio pauses, her voice hinting at how carefully she searched her heart. “I needed to tell myself that I was not going to pursue professional golf so that I could try to relieve some of that,” she says. Another turning point came when Lewellen and associate coach Ryan Potter encouraged her to examine her goal of becoming the best golfer in the world. “There is a difference between mastering a skill and trying to be the best,” Migliaccio says. “It was a really good perspective for me. That’s not life. Life is being around the people I love and going to the beach and playing golf with the people I love. That’s where life is.” For Migliaccio, life is also about giving her time. She leads a studentathlete community service group at Wake Forest. Lewellen believes that provides the best snapshot of her senior golfer. “If you take (golf) to the profes-

sional level, you have to be selfish and you have to be self-absorbed to a certain degree. That’s not who she is,” the Wake Forest coach says. “She wants to give a little bit of herself to a lot of people. She serves people and she has a big heart. She wants to make sure she can share that with people.” With a new outlook on her future, she set about the final semester of her collegiate golf career, including one last turn on the world stage at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur in early April. She calls the tournament and its field of 84 golfers, “100 percent the biggest tournament you can play in.” Migliaccio was the leader in

the clubhouse on the final day until 17-year-old Tsubasa Kajitani of Japan forced a playoff with a par at 18. Emelia lost on the first playoff hole when her approach shot found the bunker. “In the moment, I was really disappointed and sad, but I was very proud of myself, so there was definitely mixed emotions,” she says. The irony of delivering the best individual performance of her career after her career-changing decision is not lost on Migliaccio. But she prefers to focus on the happy ending, where she walked the hallowed fairways of Augusta National with her mother/caddie at her side. “It was so special,” she says. “I kept looking back at my mom. It was so wild to see her in the professional

(caddie) uniform and just being able to walk there with her.” The rewarding last chapter of her career has not swayed Migliaccio to reconsider professional golf. Her personal growth and self-awareness were hard-won, the lessons bittersweet but necessary. “If I would tell my younger self anything, I would say, ‘I promise, if you take this day off, it’s going to help,’” she says. “More is not always better. That’s where it’s easy to start placing your worth in golf.” Her unwavering commitment to golf may have come with an unexpected finish, but it’s a small price for the affable Migliaccio. She has played in two U.S. Women’s Opens, three Arnold Palmer Cups and tournaments in Japan, France and across the United States. “I’ve been all over the world and it’s been amazing,” she says. “Golf has taken me so far and golf will continue to take me further. Sometimes dreams change, and I’m learning to embrace that and look forward to new chapters with greater opportunities than I could ever imagine.”

McConnell also spent $5.5 million on a re-imagining design by Kyle Franz at Raleigh CC and is now moving into Virginia after previously keeping the firm’s footprint in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. McConnell Golf closed the year by announcing the purchase of The Water’s Edge Country Club and The Westlake. Both golf clubs are set along the shores of Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia’s Roanoke region, southeast of Roanoke and southwest of Lynchburg. The two courses are less than a two-hour drive from Winston-Salem and Greensboro. McConnell first started playing The Water’s Edge in Penhook, Va., with friends in the early 1990s. McConnell

own and I really don’t ever worry about getting my money back,” he said. “As a business you always have an exit strategy whether you sell it back to the members, or you sell it to a third party. I feel very confident we’ll be able to recoup all of our capital with no problem at some point.” When is enough enough for a golf lover who turned 70 years old this summer and still logs 75 or so golf rounds a year as a 10-handicap? “We’re getting close (to being done) just because you can get so spread out and there are a lot of things you don’t focus on as much as you thought you might be able to -- and it gets more challenging as it gets bigger,” McConnell said. “It’s very difficult to build a Chickfil-A model in the golf industry. We have our brand and we have our style of operation and best of breed management philosophies we’ve adopted, and you try to ingrain that in all the clubs, but honestly unless you have the manager there every day and on top of it it’s always a challenge of what I call keeping the brand awareness, and the loyalty, and kind of why we’re here in the first place throughout the organization. “You would have to get to a point and say ‘no masse,’ and there were a couple of times I probably felt that way, but then you keep seeing that light at the end of the tunnel and seeing that next club that is going to help us, you start finding what I call these jewels that you can now bring in and make such a financial difference to your whole network.”

Why exactly is McConnell here, at this point in his life, tackling these daily challenges that at times must seem unsustainable? Wouldn’t sipping a mixed drink on a Caribbean beach seem more peaceful, more enjoyable? “I don’t know why I keep doing this other than honestly it becomes seeing what you can build,” he said. “It started out as more of a passion and now it’s more of a challenge of what can you create from a model and an evaluation standpoint.” McConnell is a huge Virginia Tech football fan, and he loves going on family vacations. His trip to Scotland got postponed this year because of the pandemic, but he hopes to head across the pond in 2021. McConnell’s dream foursome would include Tiger Woods, former president Dwight D. Eisenhower, Bobby Jones and Arnold Palmer. How does McConnell believe he is viewed across the golf world? “The average golfer probably views me as the luckiest guy in the world, because they say ‘Hey, that guy not only has one course but he has multiple courses and they are all good.’ Kind of a feeling that I wish I could be like him. And then others are saying ‘why is he doing that, why did he get rid of his career and very successful business in order to go do this?’ You get two sides,” McConnell said. “The golfers are probably a bit envious and then the smart business people probably think I’ve gone off the deep end.”

Behind the Scenes Volunteer veteran Richard Lawson invaluable resource for Pinehurst-area championships By DAVID DROSCHAK

ichard Lawson has led a life that is beyond interesting and intriguing. He spent the “working portion” of his career as a government contractor designing and executing United States missile defense systems. The last two decades, Lawson has been the “behind the scenes” engine to help fuel Pinehurst-area volunteers for such high-profile events as U.S. Opens and U.S Kids Golf World Championships. Few across the nation do it better than Lawson, who blends organizational skills he fostered while working as a CIA contractor for AT&T Bell Labs in Burlington and Greensboro with the ability to delegate authority to team volunteer leaders. And the 86-year-old Lawson shows no signs of slowing down. He will be organizing several hundred volunteers again this summer for the U.S. Kids event at more than a dozen Sandhills golf courses, and is a vice-chair for volunteers for the U.S. Women’s Open at Pine Needles in 2022. God willing, Lawson will be around for the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in 2024 – a decade after he led a team of 3,000 volunteers for the historic back-to-back men’s and women’s national championships at Pinehurst Resort. “It was suspected that that would be a one-time event and it has been and I believe it will be,” Lawson said the massive undertaking of staging two major championships on the same golf course on consecutive weeks. “It was a unique experience for all the volunteers, and something they will never forget. I know I won’t.” Lawson holds post graduate degrees from N.C. State and Duke, and began his volunteering career in North Carolina with the U.S. Open in 1999. During most of the USGA championships in the last 20 years staged in and around Pinehurst, Lawson has been in charge of organizing volunteers for on-course duties such as marshals, scoring, pace-of-play and standard bearers. PGA Tour and LPGA players, along with the world’s up-and-coming star amateurs, have come to town to compete and then departed for the next challenge while Lawson has remained a constant rock for tournament organizers, who rely on his expertise, knowledge and leadership skills to help seamlessly execute events. “Richard is a lot like the man behind the curtain, working feverishly to make sure all of the volunteer leaders are in place, and every 14

volunteer position is filled,” said Peter Stilwell, who helps organize the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship. “He is truly a wizard at organization and leadership, and his love of the game of golf and passion for the events he operates is second to none. “Richard treats every event he is involved with like a major championship,” added Stilwell. “For 16 plus years he has worked diligently to make sure every player from around the world has the opportunity to feel like they are playing in a major tournament. He takes great pride in knowing that many of the kids who have played their way through the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship in Pinehurst are competing in today’s major championships.” Volunteer work at golf events is a vital cog in a tournament’s operating plan. Most of the jobs require hours in the hot North Carolina sun, with no pay. A lunch, a few bottles of water, a T-shirt and the experience of “rubbing elbows” with the players is the allure. “They couldn’t run tournaments economically without volunteers, that’s for sure,” Lawson said. Lawson has been married twice, each time for about 30 years. And he will also go to his grave with some top-secret U.S. intelligence that to this day he can’t discuss. However, he did hit on a few interesting jobs he was assigned to during

his career, some of which occurred 50 years ago that he now feels comfortable talking about. Lawson was involved with the defense system surrounding a conflict in Cuba during the tenure of President John Kennedy, as well as conducting atmospheric nuclear weapon testing systems, one of which required Lawson to design a program that would mount a nuclear warhead on the front of a missile and fire in such a position that it would explode in front of an ICBM. “I spent 81 hours one week working on that system,” he said. “It certainly was an interesting career. “I ended up as a senior vice president so I had a lot of people under me, so I had to organize and pick leaders who could take sections of a job and execute it,” he said. “Same thing with volunteering – I have 20 leaders and they are each assigned a particular function.” With so many moving parts, has Lawson ever woken up at night in a cold sweat, thinking he forgot a certain task? “No way,” he said, laughing. “I have mostly everything stored in my mind. Sure, you have to keep records on a computer and I have organization charts for the leaders, but I don’t write down the day-to-day activities. The secret to me is making sure you have leaders who know how to take responsibility and go do their jobs, then during the event it’s usually a relaxing time to me. “There are always a couple of things you can look back and realize they could have been done better but mostly we’ve done it for so long that it’s a pretty smooth running machine.” Lawson also doesn’t necessarily compare notes with any of his counterparts at other tournaments across the state, particularly for the massive U.S. Kids event. “It’s so different. We use 12-13 golf courses for that championship; all these other events use just one golf course,” Lawson said. “It’s a totally different function. I burn a couple of tanks of gas running around between all of the golf courses during the week’s events.” From the USGA to local championship organizers such as Stillwell with the U.S. Kids event, Lawson is just as important – if not more key – than the high-profile winner holding the trophy aloft. “Richard has been the leading advocate for the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship for over 16 years,” Stilwell said. “He understands the value of having kids from around the world competing in Pinehurst, and taking the positive experiences they had while in our community back to their countries.” “I do it because I like people; meeting new people keeps me motivated,” added Lawson. “And it’s a good way to create camaraderie for the whole area.” www.triadgolf.com

Duke women sweep ACC championships

dominating performance in match play sealed another Duke ACC women’s golf championship. After emerging from a tight battle with Wake Forest in the 54-hole medal play portion of the event at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, Duke got past Virginia 3-2 in the semifinal match. An anticipated championship showdown with Wake Forest didn’t happen thanks to Florida State’s 4-1 victory over the Demon Deacons in the other semifinal. The championship match on April 17 was Blue Devil domination in the form of a 5-0 sweep. Senior Jaravee Boonchant, junior Gina Kim, sophomore Erica Shepherd and the freshman duo of Anne Chen and Phoebe Brinker all won their matches against Florida State. It was the 22nd ACC title for the Blue Devils and the sixth in the last nine years, including four victories at Sedgefield. For long-time coach Dan Brooks, it marked his 21st ACC Championship in 37 years at Duke. “It feels a little bit like we won twice because of the stroke play and then match play,” Brooks said. ”I love Sedgefield, and I love the way they run this event.” It was the first time match play was added to the mix. “It was a little bit of an experiment throwing match play in. All of us coaches got together and decided to do this,” he added. “It feels a little bit like nationals and that is what we hope the conference does is sort of prepare you for further postseason.” The last time the nationals were played, Duke edged Wake Forest 3-2 in an epic championship match that saw three of the five matches go extra holes. That was almost two years ago as the 2020 championships were canceled because of COVID-19. The Blue Devils and Demon Deacons waged a back-and-forth battle in the medal play competition. Duke shot 286 in round one for a two-shot edge over Wake Forest and Florida 16

Einstein wins third title High Point’s Brandon Einstein, a redshirt sophomore from Clemmons, claimed his third victory of the season when he won the Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate in mid-April in Estero, Fla.

The win tied Einstein for the top spot in school history for single-season wins. Five birdies in a seven-hole span on the back nine helped Einstein close with a 69 and earn a one-shot victory in the 75-player event. He opened with 71-68. Einstein ended the season with a 70.9 average in 25 rounds, best in school history. He had 17 rounds of par or better. www.triadgolf.com
