ennifer Kupcho is returning to Wake Forest for her senior season with some nice hardware. She has won the 2018 Mark H. McCormack Medal as the top-ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings after the final elite event of the year. She is the first American woman to receive the honor since the female award was established in 2011. “It’s a really big honor to get this medal,” Kupcho said. “Obviously it’s been a long stretch of hard work, and it’s great to see it pay off and to have the pride of coming out on top. I’m looking forward to the college season.” The honor caps a stellar 2017-18 season for Kupcho, who became Wake Forest’s first women’s golfer to receive national player of the year honors when she won the Honda Award.

After receiving an exemption into the LPGA Marathon Classic in July, she posted a tie for 16th while competing as an amateur. The USGA and the R&A co-award the McCormack Medal annually. It is named after Mark H. McCormack, who founded sports marketing company IMG and was a great supporter of amateur golf. With the honor, Kupcho was awarded exemptions into the 2019 U.S. Women’s Open and Women’s British Open, if she remains an amateur.

Her historic year was highlighted with her victory at the 2018 NCAA Championship. Her junior season featured four victories and two other top-5 finishes as she finished under par in a school-record eight events. Her scoring average of 70.60 set a school record, breaking the previous mark of 70.61 that she set during her sophomore season. Kupcho tied her own school 54-hole scoring record with a 15-under perfor-

Architect Spotlight Kris Spence so much more than a Ross restorer

By BRAD KING olf course architect Kris Spence faced a standing room only crowd of 400-plus gathered in Providence Country Club’s Grand Ballroom in early January for a presentation of the club’s upcoming golf course renovation. Tall and broad-shouldered with auburn hair and a chiseled countenance, Spence was dressed in a dark suit and a stylish white dress shirt with a cutaway collar — far from his typical field attire. When a technical glitch forced Spence to present 12 holes to the membership from memory, he never missed a beat. Speaking in a soft-spoken, Midwestern drawl, Spence is astutely loquacious and the members loved what they heard. “The excitement level was through the roof,” said Providence CC director of golf Kevin Reardon.

Spence, 56, lives and works in Greensboro in a relatively nondescript office on West Friendly Avenue near PTI airport. Despite the unpretentious surrounds, he has earned a reputation as one of the country’s top restorers of Donald Ross courses and other classically designed layouts. His firm, Spence Golf Design, which he opened in 2000, now boasts nearly two-dozen employees and has carved out a productive niche around the Southeast. Spence has renovated, restored or worked on about 30 courses in North Carolina, most notably Sedgefield CC, site of the PGA Tour’s annual Wyndham Championship, Roaring Gap Club — ranked No. 82 in Golfweek’s Top 100 Classic Courses — Country Club of North Carolina’s Dogwood Course, Forsyth CC, Mimosa Hills, Grove Park, Blowing Rock, Cape Fear and Myers Park. “I’ve worked on around 20 Ross courses,

with several being his best work in North Carolina,” Spence said. “I’d like to think I’ve played a significant role in improving the quality of golf architecture throughout the state.” Raleigh-based McConnell Golf purchased Providence CC in early 2016 and immediately announced it would spend the next few years providing substantial improvements around the club and renovating Providence’s golf course. Spence was hired to function dually as the architect for the project as well as the construction manager. “Kris is a visionary in implementing new features and modernization when he updates an existing course,” said McConnell Golf CEO John McConnell. Spence previously worked with McConnell Golf on the restoration of the Ellis Maples-designed Brook Valley Country Club in Greenville, N.C. At Providence, things have come full circle as Spence renovated the design work of Maples’ son, Dan. “People pigeonhole me as a ‘Ross guy,’” Spence said. “But I’ve done plenty of restorations that don’t look like a Ross course.”

Like Ross and Maples, Spence comes at architecture from the perspective of a golf course superintendent. He grew up in Steele, Mo., in the state's southeast corner — the “boot heel,” Spence says, where “nobody in town played the game but me.” Spence says he learned golf watching Nicklaus, Trevino and Watson on TV. Despite not having a high school golf team, Spence was good enough to earn a college scholarship to Arkansas State. Following graduation in 1985, Spence was working for the legendary golf course superintendent Jim Ganley at the Atlanta Athletic Club, when John Hughes — then the owner of Greensboro’s Forest Oaks CC — reached out to Ganley looking for a young new superintendent. Ganley suggested he look no further than Spence. “I oversaw my first GGO at the age of 23, in 1986, and haven’t looked back,” Spence said. Following Forest Oaks, Spence moved on to direct the construction of the Governors Club in Chapel Hill, before coming back to Greensboro Country Club for a decade. CCNC Dogwood Course I think the members will find that they have a course that they can be proud to show their friends and guests that is significantly different than their neighbors in the Charlotte market.” Spence typically spends two or three days a week on site. “Actually, going onto the site is the part that people like to see, where I’m out throwing pin flags, I’m painting lines and I’m conferring with shapers,” he said. “I’m very hands-on and I’m in the field a lot. I approve every feature on every project. There’s a lot going on when I’m on site.”

During the Providence renovation, Spence drove back and forth to Charlotte when he was able, but after long days he spent the night at his place on High Rock Lake, about 45 minutes from the club. Meanwhile, Spence was also flying down to Florida to oversee a major Ross restoration at Sara Bay CC in Sarasota, which was a winter hangout for Bobby Jones where he played exhibition matches against Walter Hagen and other wellknown professionals of the day. Jones was even hired to help sell real estate for the original owner and development when the club was formed. “Sara Bay will have the most authentic Ross greens in the state of Florida,” Spence said. “We utilized his drawings in laying them out during the shaping process.” Closer to home in the North Carolina mountains, Spence is finishing a bunker, tee and fairway remodel project at Jefferson Landing, about 20 miles northeast of Boone. “We’re also designing a new nine-hole par-3 course near the clubhouse area as an added amenity for members and guests,” he said. When Spence needs to refuel his creative juices, he occasionally travels across the pond to the game’s birthplace. In early June, Spence made his third trip to Scotland, this time with his brother-inlaw and two nephews, playing a strong rotation of classic golf courses including Lundin Links, Carnoustie, the Old Course, Jubiliee, North Berwick, Gullane, Dunbar and Old Musselburgh — which they played with hickory clubs. “This was my first time visiting the East Lothian area,” Spence said. “We saw a lot of great stuff. My focus was to improve my use of undulation and variety in the approaches of my work. I learned so much from my visit and can’t wait to return in a year or two.” TRIAD GOLF TODAY • SEPTEMBER 2018

Coach shows the kids he can still play Haas wins Carolinas Open, cards top 20 Champions Tour finish this summer

By DAVID DROSCHAK erry Haas was sitting by himself in the clubhouse watching the rain fall on a grey New York day as he was preparing to compete in a Champions Tour event, a lonely moment that just reinforced his decision to pursue college coaching in the latter part of his life rather than professional golf. The competitive rounds for the long-time Wake Forest men’s coach are sporadic these days, but Haas drove up to Endicott, N.Y., after winning the 94th Carolinas Open this summer to see if he could Monday qualify for the DICK’S Sporting Goods Open on a course where he played his first PGA Tour tournament. He did, and then shot impressive rounds of 69-68-71 to tie for 19th, and with several golfers, among those his brother Jay Haas, who has won 33 professional events, including 18 on the Champions Tour. The 54-year-old Jerry Haas is at peace with his golfing arc, so much so that he scratched some course management plans on the back of a Biscuitville place mat from former Wake Forest player Chad Wilfong prior to his opening-round 63 at the Carolinas Open at Starmount Forest in Greensboro. “I followed everything Chad told me, and everything he told me was perfect,” Haas said of his execution that enabled him to shoot 11-under over 54 holes for a three-shot victory in July. “It’s funny how the mind works when you want to play well somewhere,” Haas said. “I knew my uncle won the Greensboro Open on that course 60 years ago and I had heard the stories from him many times about how he birdied the last two holes to win.” The uncle Haas talks about is Bob Goalby, who held off the likes of Sam Snead, Art Wall Jr., Don January and Tony Lema to win the 1958 Greater Greensboro Open at Starmount. 10

To say Jerry Haas comes from a golfing family may be the understatement of the century. There is Goalby, older brother Jay, and nephew Bill Hass, who won the Tour Championship in 2011 after being coached by Jerry at Wake Forest. Even Jerry’s son Kyle has made the varsity golf team at Forsyth Country Day School as a 7th grader. And Jerry Haas was… and still is a very good player. In 1985, Haas was named second team AllAmerican in his final year at Wake Forest and was also selected to the American Walker Cup team. He finished an impressive tied for 31st at the 1985 Masters Tournament as an amateur and turned professional in 1986. Haas played on the European Tour in 1988 and 1989. He finished 57th on the money list in 1989 and third at qualifying school, earning him his 1990 PGA Tour card. He played on the PGA Tour full-time in 1990 and 1991 and split time between the Nationwide Tour and the PGA Tour in 1992. He won three Nationwide Tour events in 1994 to help him gain PGA Tour card again for 1995 but he would have to go back to the Nationwide Tour the following year.

In 1997, Haas stopped playing professionally without a PGA Tour victory under his belt and spent a year as a commentator for The Golf Channel before taking over the Wake Forest program in September of that year. “I quit playing when I was 33,” Haas said. “I didn’t want the game of golf to beat me up mentally. I am pretty fresh for 54 golf-wise. I was just saying the other day to Jay how lonely this life must be and he has done it for 45 years. It takes a special person to do that. Listen, 35 of us were playing for a Monday qualifying spot in New York and 31 didn’t get one. That’s not fun for these guys, but I love the game and I don’t get frustrated with it anymore. It is what it is.” Heading into his 22nd season at Wake Forest’s men’s coach, these occasional competitive rounds give Haas some perspective he likely wouldn’t have had had he chosen to keep grinding on Tour. “I just love to play. I was taught well and I’m a golf fan,” said Haas, who has coached 19 All-Americans at Wake Forest. “I played the second and third rounds of the Carolinas Open with college kids. And they had questions for me and we talked about golf on the course between shots, what my philosophy was and what was I thinking. I try to pass on as much knowledge as I have. The thing I try to stress to the players on my Wake Forest team is I didn’t just walk out to the Carolinas Open and play, I stretch every morning, I stretch every night. “I’ll tell you I hardly ever hit a ball or play a practice round, but I think back to something my brother Jay told me once that when he goes out and plays. His goal on the first hole is to get the ball in the fairway – that’s his only goal – and the goal from there is to get it on the green, and then the goal from there is to try to get a decent look at it and try to make the putt. Don’t go out and say ‘I’m going to shoot 65 today.’’’ Carding a top 20 finish at a Champions Tour event despite few competitive rounds per year -- finishing ahead of dozens of accomplished pros -- doesn’t necessarily give Haas the itch to play more pro events. “Some people say ‘Well, take more

batting practice.’ Well, that has nothing to do with it most times,” he says. “I practiced plenty, trust me, it just didn’t work out. Now, I can help the players, telling them what works and what doesn’t work, but at the end of the day it is their journey and they have to figure out their path.” Take it from a guy who marched to his own beat. “I have gotten to be a way better player since I’ve been coaching,” he added. “Just sitting there and watching from the outside you realize how difficult we tend to make it as a player, just simple stuff. I’ve always said ‘it’s a great game of ‘what if’s.’ As a player you make decisions and you have to live with them because everybody always second guesses everything, like saying a kid doesn’t have good course management. They do have good course management they just don’t have good ball control. I feel good and I still feel pretty young, and I hope I still have a lot to give these kids.”

Future bright for Wyndham Championship

By BRAD KING round the Piedmont Triad, they don’t call it the “ol’ GGO” quite as much as they

used to. No, the Wyndham Championship has charted a course all its own during the past decade. In the late 1980s the Greater Greensboro Open — the GGO — was kick started by a couple of sponsors, Kmart and Chrysler. But the most dynamic branding change took place in 2007, when Wyndham Rewards took over sponsorship and removed “Greensboro” from the tournament title — largely in recognition of the Piedmont Triad’s evolution into a single market for economic development. The tournament’s 2008 move back to Sedgefield Country Club and its central Triad position furthered the regionalism concept. The proximity to Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point and Burlington has lured residents to take a greater ownership stake in the tournament’s success. Sedgefield owner McConnell Golf has been a huge supporter and in 2015, Wyndham and Winston-Salem-based BB&T agreed to a 10-year extension to keep both associated through 2026. No matter what its name, however, the PGA Tour’s sixth oldest tournament and Greensboro’s flagship sporting event is steeped in history. Three of the first four and seven of the first 11 GGOs were won by Sam Snead, Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson. Snead captured the inaugural event in 1938 and would go on to win a PGA Tour record eight GGOs, including his last in 1965 at the age of 52. Charlie Sifford became the first African American to play a PGA Tournament in the South when he was invited to the 1961 GGO. Seve Ballesteros won his first tournament on American soil in Greensboro in 1978. Davis Love III has won titles

Meanwhile, the Wyndham Championship has served as a philanthropic engine for the Triad and beyond. The Piedmont Triad Charitable Foundation board that runs the tournament has used foundation proceeds to fund not only charities, but economic development as well. Every year, the Wyndham Championship donates thousands of dollars to non-profits ranging from Habitat for Humanity to area backpack programs — among many others. The entire family feel came full circle in August, when Brandt Snedeker made history at Sedgefield and went wire-to-wire in winning the 2018 Wyndham title. In Thursday’s opening round, Snedeker found himself 1 over after

three holes, yet went on to fire a course- and tournament-record 59, the 10th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history. Snedeker became the fifth golfer to win an event after shooting a score below 60. He backed up his first round with a 67-68-65 finish (-21) to take home the Sam Snead Cup by three shots over C.T. Pan and 2011 Wyndham champion Webb Simpson, who closed with a 62. At one point on Sunday, all three were tied for the lead. The victory was Snedeker’s ninth on the PGA Tour, but his first in 2 ½ years. With a handful of family members on hand including his wife and two young children, Snedeker added an exclamation point by draining a 20-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole, becoming the 10th player to win multiple times in Greensboro. His victory as a rookie — at Forest Oaks in 2007 — was the first of Snedeker’s career and he signed with Wyndham as a sponsor, a relationship that has remained strong in the decadeplus since. Snedeker was emotional in describing what his victory meant. “I guess I’m turning into Bubba Watson and wanting to cry every two seconds out here,” Snedeker said. “But being my first Tour win, having Wyndham believe in me in 2007 when I was a 26-year-old kid and being my longest term corporate sponsor out here and a family really … to do it here, to shoot 59 on Thursday, to be in the lead all week, to deal with that pressure every night, to be able to step up to the plate and shoot 65 when I had to means the world to me. “Coming out here with Wyndham on my chest — Greensboro’s adopted son I feel like — and to be able to deliver like I did this afternoon ... I feel like so many people were enjoying this with me. It’s not just my win, it’s a community win.” For much of its history, the GGO was a spring event held in April or May. A schedule change in 2003 moved it toward the end of the season, where it will remain for the foreseeable future. But change is on the horizon in 2019. Next year, the PGA Championship transitions from August, the week Continued on page 13 www.triadgolf.com

Wyndham from page 12 before the Wyndham, to mid-May. This major move highlighted July’s highly anticipated release of the 2019 PGA Tour schedule. The tour has moved up its entire schedule — away from the opening week of college football season and wrapping up before the NFL season kicks off. As a result, next year’s 80th Wyndham Championship will be bumped up two weeks — two weeks after the British Open, with a World Golf Championship tournament and an adjacent minor tournament the week before. Tournament director Mark Brazil said after 2019, the order will be the British Open followed by another tournament — likely a tournament in Minneapolis — then the WGC and then the Wyndham. However, the Wyndham Championship will remain the PGA Tour’s final regular-season event and the last opportunity for players to move in — or out — of the postseason. All of which translates into a nerve-racking finish for those on the bubble. The top 125 after the Wyndham not only advance to the lucrative playoffs, but they retain PGA Tour cards for the following year. Brazil, who has been tournament director since 2001 and served as chairman of the PGA Tour’s Tournament

Advisory Council, described the Wyndham as “the playoff play-in event.” “Whoever wins here gets to move on,” he said. The Tour also announced a condensed, three-week playoff after the Wyndham versus the current four tournaments over five weeks. Next year, only the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings will advance after the first playoff event, the Northern Trust, and only 30 will advance from the sec-

ond event, the BMW Championship, to qualify for the Tour Championship. Brazil pointed out that fewer events translate into increased significance for the remaining three. “There’s a lot more emphasis on being in the right spot because you don’t have four more tournaments,” Brazil said. “I think that brings more importance to us.” While players near the top of the rankings may still take the week off to get ready for the playoffs, more big names could show up in Greensboro

With three playoff tournaments instead of four, those hoping to have a legitimate shot at winning the Tour Championship will have one less week to do it and a greater sense of urgency, making the last stop on the regular-season schedule an even more important opportunity. “Your position going into the playoffs dictates a lot of your chances of winning the FedExCup Playoffs, dictates how you can think and play, your realistic chances of winning or not winning,” Snedeker said. “As somebody who's been fortunate enough to win before, I realize how important it is to be in a good position going into the playoffs and also to play well when you're there.” In addition, every other year the Ryder Cup will be looming at Wyndham time — another advantage, as captain’s picks will be made immediately after the tournament ends, so bubble players will be trying to impress. Through it all, the Wyndham Championship’s future appears bright. “To be perfectly frank, I didn't have any chance at all of winning the FedExCup Playoffs when I showed up (at the Wyndham Championship) and there's just no way, as far back as I was, I didn't see it happening,” Snedeker said. “(Now) I feel like I have a chance, I feel like I kind of put myself in position where three good weeks going to East Lake, you never know what's going to happen.” TRIAD GOLF TODAY • SEPTEMBER 2018

This is the second year Adams has competed full time on the Symetra Tour. She said her improvements from a

year ago have been considerable. “Last year, it was more like I was getting my feet wet,” she said. “There’s so much to learn.” If a top 10 finish isn’t realized this year, Adams plans to attempt to make it to the LPGA next spring through qualifying school. Adams got her start in golf when she was just 7 when her father, Steve, introduced her to the sport at Indian Valley, close to the family’s home in northern Alamance County. She played golf and several other sports until reaching high school when her father told her she needed to select one on which to concentrate. For Adams, it was golf. Asked if she ever wishes she’d chosen soccer instead, Adams laughed. “No,” she said. “Golf’s been good to me. I’ve enjoyed it.” Adams suffered with mononucleosis as a sophomore in high school, for six weeks not able to so much as putt a ball, much less drive one. The illness affected the attention she received from college coaches. But UNC Wilmington’s Cindy Ho eventually saw Adams play in a tournament in

Durham and invited her to the campus for a visit. Adams said she’ll be forever grateful to Ho for taking a chance on her. “I visited Wilmington and loved the campus,” she said. “I loved all four years I spent there.” In 2013-14, her senior year, Adams capped a brilliant career by making her fourth-consecutive postseason appearance at the NCAA East Regional in Tallahassee, Fla. She was the Colonial Athletic Association’s top player in 2012-13, collecting CAA player of the year honors and winding up second in the CAA Championship as the Seahawks finished runner-up. Adams earned an individual entry into the NCAA Central Regional in Norman, Okla., where she placed eighth overall. One person who thinks Adams has what it takes to make it to the LPGA Tour is Jason Widener, who teaches at Mebane’s Mill Creek Golf Club. Widener has worked with Adams for eight years. “She’s reached the stage where she really doesn’t have any weaknesses,” Widener said. “She’s always been able to bomb the ball off the tee and her short game has caught up to her long game. She’s getting more and more confident, she’s got all the tools.” He said the progression he’s seen in Adams’ play has been remarkable. “Each year she gets better,” Widener said. Paul Hunt owns Burlington’s Hunt Golf. He has known Adams since she was about 12 and began competing in area youth tournaments. Hunt said he’s kept up with Adams and helped her get a deal with Wilson Staff to provide her clubs and other equipment. He said as much as he admires Adams as a golfer, he admires her even more as a person. “She’s a grinder, she’s worked for everything she’s got,” Hunt said. Like Widener, Hunt said he’s impressed by Adams’ improvements, and feels she’s only going to continue getting better. “She’s throwing darts now,” he said. “And she can flat crush a ball off the tee.” Adams said she appreciates the kind words, and said she hopes to one day reward those who have invested so much in her success. She also hopes to one day earn enough to replace her aged Element, but for the time being, she’s remaining true to her roots. “I’m a country girl,” Adams said. “I like to fish and ride a four-wheeler. When I’m home, that’s what I do. We’re a country family.”

The U.S. Amateur torch has been passed from one famous resort to another in August

t’s a great time to be among the world’s best amateur players, considering the recent venues for the U.S. Amateur Championship. The proverbial torch was passed in mid August from Pebble Beach to Pinehurst as the Sandhills area will now take a firm grip and spotlight on several high-profile USGA championships over a five-year period, starting with the 2019 U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst Resort. A team of eight from Pinehurst Resort – from golf maintenance to golf operations to media relations to volunteer leaders – have returned from an August fact-finding trip to the West Coast as the 2018 U.S. Amateur was staged at rival resort Pebble Beach. “It has been since 2008 that we last hosted the U.S. Amateur and a lot of people have changed on our team and on the USGA team, so the trip was to make sure we’re all on the same page,” said Pinehurst Resort president Tom Pashley. “And it helps us get a shot in the arm because we’ve got a lot going on here and have been running in a bunch of different 2017 U.S. Amateur champion Viktor Hovland

It’s a great opportunity to get people focused and realize it’s less than 365 days before it’s going to be here.” It will be the third time Pinehurst has hosted the U.S. Amateur and 10th overall USGA championship at the iconic resort. Pinehurst was the stage of Labron Harris’ triumph in 1962, and in 2008 Danny Lee romped to victory, becoming the youngest player to win the U.S. Amateur at the time. Pinehurst has been home to amateur golf since the early years of its founding, serving as the home to the longest consecutively running amateur championships in the United States, the North & South Amateur. It is at Pinehurst where Richard Tufts penned the “Creed of the Amateur,” wherein he writes, “Amateurism, after all, must be the backbone of all sport– golf or otherwise.” In addition to the U.S. Amateur, the USGA will stage the U.S. Senior

Quail Ridge:

Rising from the ashes

o just how did Quail Ridge Golf Club return to form after the previously dilapidated course had zero takers at auction? A call from the Coca-Cola man, of course. But this success story really has nothing to do with soda pop at all, other than a phone call between friends that set off a chain of events that has now placed Quail Ridge Golf Club back in the rotation for snowbirds heading south on U.S. 1 to Pinehurst, along with Triad and Triangle golfers. “The golf club was in very, very poor shape,” said Mike Hendley, now one of three principal owners who have helped revive an Ellis Maples design that once hosted an ACC men’s golf championship and U.S. Open qualifier. “We bought it in January 2017. It was not closed but it was getting ready to be. They tried to auction it off and it didn’t work. There just wasn’t 20

any grass out here at all, and the greens weren’t good. The fairways were nothing – they were actually sand.” “It’s pretty bad when you can’t auction a place off,” added Joe Gay, the former director of golf at nearby Tobacco Road who left golf 2 ½ years ago to go into the restaurant business. Gay, born and raised in Sanford, has briefly returned to the golf business to help promote Quail Ridge. “I really wasn’t ready to jump back in (to golf) but I’m just stepping my toe in the water because I had a personal interest in this place being a hometown boy and my family’s roots run deep here,” Gay said. “You just want a place like this to thrive and now that it’s in great shape you want people to know about it.”

How far had Quail Ridge fallen since Wake Forest won the 1968 ACC title here by 31 strokes? Well, the snack bar/grill had been closed since 2004 and rounds were selling online for as cheap as $10. In the course’s heyday it logged close to 30,000 rounds, but that number had dipped to around 8,000. “And that’s being generous,” said Randy Dallas, a consultant and course superintendent. “I would say on a sale of 1-10 the course was a 2 when we sprayed it out,” Dallas added about the turf retooling effort that has taken place. “It was basically weeds. There wasn’t any grass here… I don’t know how people were playing.” Well, they weren’t, and rumors pointed to apartments being planned for the 156-acre property. And that’s where the

Hendley, one of the first two golf professionals here in 1967, received a phone call out of the blue in 2017 about Quail Ridge. “The Coca-Cola guy was just a church friend,” he said. “(Current partner) Lib Kelly Smith had approached him because he’s very wealthy and they were friends. He said ‘Mike I have this friend that is looking at Quail Ridge and what do you think?’ I said, ‘it’s a good idea’ and Lib called me that night and wanted to know if I wanted to invest in it. I thought about it and thought about it and I felt it would be smart to do. I have done this because of the history. I didn’t know if I would make any money or not, but I knew if I didn’t then I could afford the investment part. This was in October 2017 and we closed it in January and went to work.” Smith was in charge of redoing the clubhouse and opening the grill, while Dallas began the turf portion of the course’s $1.2 million investment.

Gay said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you dig down six feet you are hitting sand the whole way. Craig Cox knows that as well as anyone and you might want him as a good luck charm in your foursome the next time you play at Holly Ridge Golf Links. Cox was in the group when Justin Rickard scored his first ace on the 16th hole in the second round of the Holly Ridge Golf Classic on Aug. 5. Three days later – on the same hole – he watched Jake Clodfelter make his first ace. Maybe one day it will be Craig joining the hole-in-one club, although witnessing is an easy way to get some notoriety in Triad Golf Today. ohn McConnell has certainly packed a lot of golf into the last 15 years. What began as the historical preservation of Donald Ross’s last design in east Raleigh in 2003 has blossomed into a portfolio of championship golf courses stretching from the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee to the Carolina coast. “I can’t believe it has gone this fast,” says McConnell, the CEO of one of the nation’s most unique golfing portfolios and membership opportunities. “You know, we had our best year ever last year; our golf rounds were up 15 percent against the national average that was 1-2 percent up, so I feel very good about what our company is doing as far as growing the game of golf,” he says. Raleigh-based McConnell Golf has emerged as an industry leader by offering its members access to a collection of pristine golf courses designed by legendary architects such as such Donald Ross, Pete Dye, and Arnold Palmer. “We have by far the best membership value on the East Coast, and it may be broader than that,” McConnell says. “We’ve got 12 championship golf courses, and board rooms and tennis courts that you are a member of, and www.triadgolf.com

each course is different and they are in pristine condition throughout the year. So, if you like to play golf I can’t think of a better value than we offer. When I play at Pinehurst and I want to play more than 18 holes I pay a second fee, with our product you can go out and play all day for cart fee if you’re a member.” What has fostered the success? “I have no idea, other than it seemed like people liked what they saw and I kept getting calls from people who wanted to be a part of our organization. It was unplanned,” McConnell says of the collection of golf courses his team has assembled that includes Raleigh Country Club, Treyburn and TPC Wakefield Plantation in the Triangle. “It seemed like it was hard to turn away some of these golf courses like a Musgrove Mill (in South Carolina) or Holston Hills (in Tennessee) when you know these are layouts you just can’t build again.” Now well into his 60s, McConnell hints that he may not be done just yet, saying he’s looking at one or two additional courses in North Carolina that he may add in the near future that would benefit “our overall brand.” “But it’s harder and harder to find courses that fit our model now because we’ve got some pretty highend products, and usually if it’s a quality product now the clubs are doing OK,” he says.

North Carolina Golf: A Perfect 10

n case you havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been keeping count, North Carolina now has more than 10 million residents and is the 10th most populous state. Having lived in the Triangle area for 35 years and enjoyed the heyday of the golfing boom when as many as 20 new courses opened across North Carolina in a year, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to assume all of our new golfing friends are conscious of all the ins-and-outs of where to play and what to see. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not necessarily the case as I often run across golfers who are in need of some muchneeded guidance. So, here are my top five â&#x20AC;&#x153;must doâ&#x20AC;? golfing experiences if you live here. Take a trip to Pinehurst Resort. Known around the world for the famed No. 2 course, the resort located in the Sandhills area is so much more these days. Just a walk through the clubhouse hallway will inspire you to pick up a club. Attend a professional golf tournament, or better yet, splurge and play in a pro-am. So many states donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a single event. We are lucky here to have four profes-

Almost free access to the best courses around and they feed you lunch, too. Championship golf cannot function without dedicated volunteers. There are many opportunities right here in our state. There is a massive run of USGA championships coming. And this September, the U.S. Mid Am is at Charlotte Country Club. It is short notice but they might still need some help. Next year, the USGA will be at Pine Needles in Southern Pines for the U.S. Senior Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Open, Pinehurst Resort has the U.S. Amateur, and Old Chatham has the U.S. Senior Amateur. You can sign up now for one or all on the USGA website. If you want to play golf at some good golf courses at a reasonable rate, here are some to consider; near the beach â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Oak Island and any of the Ocean Ridge courses. Moving west into the Sandhills, try Hyland Hills and Legacy. Continuing southwest you will find a good Donald Ross at Monroe Country Club. Shifting north is the challenging Lonnie Poole. Most have heard of Tobacco Road but close to Asheboro is Tot Hill Farm by the same architect, Mike Strantz. And on the western edge of the state there is Mount Mitchell, Maggie Valley and Beech Mountain.
