Yu: A kid to keep an eye on

By STEVE HUFFMAN t the still-tender age of 11, Ellen Yu has participated in and won more tournaments than most golfers accomplish in a lifetime. But it doesn’t take her but a moment to rank the importance of her win in the U.S. Kids Golf Foundation’s World Championship, played the first week of August at Pinehurst No. 6. Ellen fired rounds of 69, 77 and 70 to claim a four-stroke victory in the tournament’s Girls 11 division. “It’s probably the biggest (tournament) I’ve won,” said Ellen, a High Point resident. “There was lots of competition, from all over.” Ellen is the daughter of Julia and Kale Yu. She got her start playing golf about four years ago when her father took her to a driving range to hit a few balls. Kale, a religion professor at High Point University, had observed his daughter’s strength and hand-eye coordination, and thought it might transfer to excellence at the game of golf. “He thought I’d be good at it,” Ellen said. Her father was right. Nowadays, despite standing just 4-foot-10 and weighing only 95 pounds, Ellen is capable of hitting a drive better than 200 yards. Her chipping and putting games are equally impressive. Ellen competes regularly in area Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Tour junior tournaments and this past April participated in the Chip, Drive and Putt national finals at Augusta National Country Club as a prelude to the Masters. Ellen’s goal is to qualify for the LPGA Tour. Her favorite player currently on that tour is Lydia Ko, a Korean-born New Zealand golfer. Ellen is also a fan of Tiger Woods. Ellen said her favorite course is Pine Needles Golf Club in Southern Pines. Closer to home, she spends much of her time at Colonial Country Club in Thomasville where she has a youth membership. Julia said it’s not unusual for her to drop her daughter off at Colonial, confident the golf staff and other members will help keep an eye on her. “She has lots of supporters, obviously,” said Julia, a family medicine specialist with Novant Health. Julia and her husband home school Ellen, a decision that came at the request of their daughter who wanted to be able to spend more time playing golf.

“Ellen asked so she could be more dedicated (to the sport),” Julia said. She and her husband obliged, though they make sure Ellen keeps her priorities in order, completing her school work in addition to spending as much as seven hours a day at the golf course. “She is very, very motivated,” Julia said. “We never have to tell her she needs to practice more.” The possibility of burnout doesn’t seem to be an issue, as Ellen maintains that golf for her remains noth-

ing but fun. She’s made many acquaintances through golf and is quick to note, “Most of my friends are golf friends.” Julia said she and her husband strive to see that their daughter (she has three older siblings) remains wellrounded, involved in activities other than sports. She’s active at Trinity United Methodist Church where her father is an associate pastor, and volunteers with The Pathways Center, a shelter program that provides temporary housing for the homeless. It’s part of Greensboro Urban Ministry. Since June, Ellen has been receiving golf lessons from Robert Linville at Precision Golf School at Bryan Park. Before that, Mike O’Briant, retired director of golf at Colonial Country, had been teaching her. Julia said O’Briant recommended that she and her husband sign Ellen up for lessons at Precision Golf, that Linville might be able to help take her game to the next level. Linville said that in the brief time he’s been working with Ellen, he’s been nothing but impressed. “She’s obviously a really good player,” he said. “She has a tremendous determination and mindset. She’s very focused.” Linville agreed with Julia that Ellen’s desire to one day rank among the world’s golf elite doesn’t come from her parents egging her on. This isn’t a case of a child pursuing a sport out of parental pressure, he said. “It’s not her parents pushing her,” Linville said. “This is what Ellen wants. That’s the reason it’s fun for her.” He said he could see her dream of qualifying for the LPGA Tour one day being realized. “She doesn’t back away from the moment,” Linville said.

Former Western Carolina University star shines at Sedgefield By BRAD KING

.T. Poston’s social media handle is “The Postman.” Given the way his career is arching, he might consider changing that nickname to “Mr. Clutch.” Poston’s Twitter profile says the Postman is, “Open on Sundays,” and he certainly was during the final round of the Wyndham Championship in early August. Bolstered by a supportive throng of family, friends and fellow Western Carolina University alumni, the Hickory born-and-bred product wrapped up a bogey-free week by firing a finalround 62 at Sedgefield Country Club to hold off Webb Simpson by a stroke. Poston’s performance equaled the lowest mark for a final round in tournament history, set by Davis Love III at Forest Oaks Country Club in 1992. He became the fifth North Carolina native to win the tournament in its 80-year history, joining Raymond Floyd, Scott Hoch, Love and Raleigh native Simpson. Entering the tournament ranked 164th in the world, Poston, 26, moved up to 27th on the FedEx Cup points list and earned a two-year exemption on the PGA TOUR, and an invitation to next year’s Masters, among other perks. Ultimately, Poston’s impressive late-season run ended when a tie for 16th at the BMW Championship left him two spots out of the top 30 advancing to the Tour Championship. “I haven't had that many bogey-free rounds this year,” Poston said. “To be able to do four in a row is pretty special, and finish it off with a 62 on Sunday is pretty awesome. To be able to do it here in North Carolina with a lot of friends and family -- I don’t think I could have drawn it up any better.” “This is a big day, no question about it,” said Western Carolina coach Tim Eckberg, who was in Poston’s gallery, along with former coaches Gorham Bradley and Bryant Odom, and a dozen or more former Catamount golfers. “To be here for it, following J.T. around … I’m speechless. “We all believed this was coming — he’s just so good. But to do it here in North Carolina with all of these people around him, I’m just so proud of what he accomplished.” The Postman’s Wyndham performance marked the culmination of a lifetime of clutch golf. After graduating from Western Carolina, Poston immediately turned professional in August 2015, but didn’t compete in a Web.com Tour event until late spring of the following season, when he Monday-qualified for the United Leasing & Finance Championship. On the 72nd hole of his debut event, Poston was facing a 20-yard chip shot when the horn sounded announcing a weather delay. A halfhour later, Poston returned to the same spot and chipped in for eagle, allowing him to finish inside the top 25 and gain entry into the next event, the Rex Hospital Open in Raleigh. There, Poston finished third and he continued his magical run the rest of the season all the way to earning his PGA TOUR card. “In his senior year at regionals at (UNC’s Finley Golf Course) we needed a birdie on the last hole to get into the NCAAs, and J.T. said he would do it,” said Odom, one of Poston’s coaches at WCU and now the head coach at Kennesaw State. “He makes that birdie putt and we go to the NCAAs. It was unreal.” J.T. stands for James Tyree. “I’ve been J.T. since I was born,” he said. Continued on page 7

The Postman from page 6 Poston’s father’s, James Tyree Sr. — who goes by Ty — along with his mother, Cheryl, and brother, Bailey, all watched anxiously from outside the ropes during the Wyndham Championship. Yet, perhaps the second-most celebrated person on that magical Sunday at Sedgefield was Poston’s 85-year-old grandfather, a Hickory commercial real-estate agent named Charles (“Doc”) Cunningham. When J.T. was 3, “Pa Doc,” as Poston calls him, cut down a persimmon 5-wood, pried off the sole and took the weight out to create his grandson’s first club. Poston said he inherited an ideal role model in his grandfather, who played in two U.S. Senior Amateurs and two British Senior Amateurs, and has shot his age more than 600 times. “I remember growing up, he just hit it — similar game to myself,” Poston said. “Nothing flashy off the tee, but he kept it in front of him and his short game was unbelievable. That was kind of how I learned to play golf was watching him at a competitive level, learning from him.” A talented all-around athlete, Poston grew up honing his skill at Lake Hickory Country Club — like Sedgefield, a Donald Ross-designed course. In 1999, when he was 6 years old, Poston watched Payne Stewart capture one of the most memorable U.S. Open golf tournaments ever at Pinehurst. That moment lit his fire for the sport. “I played a lot of basketball and baseball and golf,” Poston said. “I played some tennis when I was younger, and kind of got away from it for a while. Now I’d say tennis is probably one of my favorite sports to play, along with basketball, away from golf.” During an illustrious, four-year career at Hickory High School, Poston earned All-State honors three times and was conference player of the year all four seasons. His Hickory prep team won four conference championships, three Catawba County championships, two regional championships, and one state championship. Poston was a key member of the 2009 state champion golf team as a sophomore and captured the state individual title twice. Poston also owns a couple of North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) records that include shooting a 63 at Foxfire Golf Resort in Pinehurst — the lowest 18-hole round ever shot in a state championship. Poston appeared in the iconic “Faces in the Crowd” section of Sports Illustrated in 2011 after winning his second straight state title and setting a scoring record along the way. “His tremendous work ethic, focus, www.triadgolf.com

In route to Greensboro for the Wyndham Championship, Poston went to see McNeely at Diamond Creek Golf Club in Banner Elk, where McNeely is managing partner. “We were working a little bit on his takeaway,” McNeely said. “That’s kind of all we work on when we get together. It helped him turn away from the ball a little bit better and turn it over a little bit, create that right-to-left ball flight, which is what he likes to see.” “He just gave me one little thought that clicked, and it started working right away,” Poston said. Poston’s Wyndham Championship victory was extremely popular, not only around North Carolina, but across the PGA TOUR. Patton Kizzire waited behind the green for Poston to roll in the testy 4-footer for par on 18, while Denny McCarthy, was doing his best to get back to Sedgefield in time. “I’m in the middle of a laundry cycle at the hotel,” McCarthy said with a laugh. “And I just left my clothes in the wash right now. I wouldn’t miss this. He’s been a great friend to me the last couple years and he deserves this so much. He’s always shot me a text when I have success, or when I’m down.” Keith Mitchell, who won The Honda Classic earlier this season and rooms with Poston in a house in St. Simons Island, Ga., said he was trying to calm himself in front of the TV. Poston had been there waiting for Mitchell when he won The Honda, and Mitchell badly wanted to return the favor. He even tried to rent a plane to get to Greensboro in time to watch the back nine. Alas, Mitchell was told the weather was too poor. “We tried everything we could,” he said. But the happiest beneficiary may have been tiny Western Carolina University and its golf team. “Western Carolina golf just took a huge step,” Eckberg said. “This is great for our program in so many ways. He is such a class act and I couldn’t be prouder of him and what this does for him. Our team is going to come in this fall more fired up than ever before. It’s just like when he got his PGA TOUR card — it elevates our program and the way we’re viewed that we’re able to develop players like this. Party Time Wyndham Championship full of gripping drama, large crowds

ongtime Wyndham Championship tournament director Mark Brazil said the 2019 event in early August, despite moving to a few weeks earlier on the PGA TOUR schedule, was its most impressive showing since Tiger Woods made his one-and only Greensboro appearance in 2015. What wasn’t to like in the 80th playing of the PGA TOUR’s sixth-oldest event other than the majors? • A homegrown winner made history while holding off another North Carolinian. • There was gripping drama down the stretch as players fought for their livelihoods — as well as big-time payouts. 10

• Add in enthusiastic crowds and nearly perfect weather. While this year’s leaderboard had a distinctly international feel for much of the week, in the end the tournament’s theme turned into “home sweet home.” Hickory native and Western Carolina graduate J.T. Poston shot a final-round 62 and played 72 holes of bogey-free golf to rack up his first PGA Tour victory and become the 14th first-time winner this season with a first-time-in-decades achievement. Poston needed every one of his heroics to fend off 2011 champion and Wake Forest graduate Webb Simpson by a stroke, matching Henrik Stenson's tourney record at 22-under and becoming the first player since Lee Trevino in 1974 to win a 72-hole stroke-play event on Tour without any bogeys or worse. “For (Poston) to be a Carolina boy, for

him to get his first win here, very similar to Webb,” Brazil said. “J.T. can really play and I’ll tell you one thing I really like about him: He’s well liked inside the locker room. A lot of the players have a lot of respect for him. They really like the guy. We had a winner and a runner-up both from North Carolina, so that was pretty cool.” While naysayers may point to the 2019 Wyndham field’s lack of Top-10 star power, the Triad’s annual event at Greensboro’s Sedgefield Country Club was bolstered by the late addition of three-time major championship winner and 2015 FedEx Cup champion Jordan Spieth. And the looming FedEx Cup Playoffs race, along with the debut of the Wyndham Rewards Top 10, added drama. Nine players entered in position to challenge for a spot in the Wyndham

Rewards Top 10, while the field also included eight of the top 30 and 17 of the top 50 in FedEx Cup points. “Out of the 70, actually 69 players (who played) at the BMW Championship, 31 of them played the Wyndham — just about half,” Brazil said a few weeks following the tournament completion. “While I know that we might not have had a lot of the top 10 players, for us to have Webb (Simpson) and Brandt (Snedeker) and then Jordan Spieth in the field, those are huge deals. “Harold Varner is well liked and is starting to play some really good golf. Billy Horschel has been playing some really good golf ever since he won the FedEx Cup Championship several years ago. That’s why every player from No. 103 to 137 in the FedEx Cup rankings showed up in Greensboro. In the end, a pair of competitors who began the tournament outside the top 125 — No. 129 Patton Kizzire and No. 134 Andrew Landry — earned their way into the season-ending playoffs. An average of 2.7 players played their way into the top 125 in this tournament's previous dozen years as the tour's final pre-playoff event. “I definitely knew what I was playing for,” Kizzire said. In addition, the Wyndham now regularly features many of the top up-andcoming players such as Matthew Wolf, Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland, who fans have followed throughout their amateur and collegiate days. “Those are the best three I’ve seen and you include www.triadgolf.com

in the middle of central North Carolina — easy to get to, right off the two highways. I feel like we’re living up to the name of North Carolina's biggest party or North Carolina’s party of the year. “For Margaritaville, we actually brought in a bunch of different up-andcoming country music acts, mainly from Nashville and around the south. I’ve never seen Margaritaville that crowded in my life.” Brazil said he received a personal thrill from the return to Greensboro of the top CBS broadcast team, including Jim Nantz and Nick Faldo, for the first time in more than a decade. “There were some big things that we did this year because we moved our dates up two weeks,” Brazil said. “Jim Nantz on the call I thought really elevated the tournament. Jim did so many different things for us. He went to the Wyndham suites and talked to their people, other corporate appearances. It was amazing all the things he did for us this year.” Next year, the Wyndham Championship will move again, slightly, to Aug. 4-9, to accommodate the Olympics being contested one week earlier in Japan on July 30-Aug. 2. Brazil said he thought any effect the Olympics might have on the

Wyndham field would be positive. “The Olympics is the only tournament going on the week before our tournament,” Brazil said. “You only have four Americans, so all the other Americans and a whole bunch of the international players that might not be representing their countries, they have a week off. Some countries have four people representing them, but most of the countries only have two people representing them, so that really helps us. Brazil anticipates 2020 will be the Wyndham Championship’s best turnout in recent memory. “I really feel like we’ll see more of those top 10, or even the top 20 trying to get into the top 10, I think we'll see more of those guys next year,” he said. “So, I really feel like the schedule will play in our favor, whereas I felt like this year, if they would have played our tournament — the big hitters — then that would have been six (events) in a row. That wasn’t a great hand to be dealt the first year. I think next year is much different for us. “I’ve spoken to Jordan (Spieth), Justin Thomas, Rory (McIlroy), I’ve spoken to all of them. They all agree that's going to be great for us.”

hree years ago, Scott Petinga — a cancer survivor and, at the time, a divorced father of three young girls — decided to take up golf as a healthy outlet to spend quality time with his family. “I wanted to make sure the time I spent with my daughters was well served, so we all decided to take golf lessons,” Petinga said. “I love the aspect where, when you're on the course, we abandon technology and just live for the now. It’s a great time to stimulate conversation and get to know each other.” Petinga said one of the biggest obstacles he faced immediately was finding clothes that fit his daughters’ individual personalities, plus were appropriate for the links. “There’s a certain way that golfers need to dress and look,” he said. “When you walk into the big box (stores) of the world, they truly abandoned the young adult category — that junior category from 4 to 12 years old,” he said. “We struggled to find clothes.” Being an entrepreneur — or a “serialpreneur” as Petinga describes himself, having launched more than a dozen companies and three charitable foundations — he decided with his daughters’ assistance to create an entire, affordable line of clothes. The company would also include a philanthropic element to help Petinga impart some life lessons on his children. For four months, the family designed and redesigned an entire collection of junior golf clothing in hundreds of styles and colors. More time was devoted to fittings, all with an end goal of achieving a hip, fun and colorful assortment of apparel for boys and girls ages 4-12 that would make a “bold but subtle statement out on the course.” “I would sneak into school at lunch time so the girls could try on samples,” Petinga said with a chuckle. The brand they came up with is called “wynnr” (wynnr.com), which features a unique, moisture wicking and thermo control, along with noticeably soft clothing for optimal performance in all temperatures. Prices range from polos ($24.99) as well as shorts and skirts ($24.99), hoodies ($39.99), vest options ($59.99) and a dress option ($49.99). Fifty percent of wynnr’s profits are 14

donated towards providing young people from underserved and underrepresented communities with access to superior educational opportunities. In addition, wynnr is a gold partner of The First Tee and will donate a minimum of $25,000 in the next several years to help the organization fund its youth-focused programs at golf courses, elementary schools and other education centers. “It’s a children’s brand, it should help other children,” Petinga said. “Right now, we’re only on-line. It is a global, e-commerce solution, so we can ship anywhere in the world.” The wynnr mantra is a powerful, positive message to send to young people: ‘You have the heart of a warrior. Nothing about you is ordinary. You celebrate victories and learn from losses. You ask no favors and strive to be the very best. Wear the clothes that do the same.” “To me, it’s not about us making money because we essentially are just breaking even,” Petinga said. “It’s about the monumental impact we can have on society.” Now 46, Petinga was diagnosed with stage 1 testicular cancer in 2004, when he

was a 31-year-old newlywed. He found himself in the operating room within a week and eventually underwent nearly a dozen rounds of radiation. The U.S. Marine turned into a 120-pound skeleton of his former self. “Everyone said (testicular cancer) was the best kind of cancer you can get, since it had a survivor rate of 99 percent. But I wound up with every possible side effect known as well as a few ailments that are not,” said Petinga. “My world came crashing down.” Testicular is the most common cancer in men between the ages of 15 and 40. Almost 10,000 men get diagnosed every year. “I am trying to promote monthly self exams,” Petinga said. “Every woman, once she reaches puberty knows she needs to conduct a self exam, yet we’re not teaching our young men that it’s equally important.” After radiation left him unable to have children, Petinga’s intent was to use his annual bonus to fund invitro fertilization. Yet, his company decided not to give bonuses that year. “The only thing I ever wanted to be was a dad, so I was devastated that the opportunity

quickly slipped through my fingers like sand,” he said. “We desperately needed the $25,000 to at least begin the invitro process.” Deep in medical debt and despondent about his circumstance, Petinga quit his job and launched his flagship marketing agency — the data-driven communications agency AKQURACY — to solve marketing problems that he felt desperately needed solutions. “I found a void that other agencies weren’t doing and it just took off and did really, really well,” he said. Within five years, AKQURACY earned a spot on Inc. Magazine’s prestigious list of “Fastest-Growing Private Companies.” Petinga went on to be selected to join the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC) – an invite comprised of the world's most successful young entrepreneurs – plus he was a semi-finalist for Entrepreneur magazine’s “Entrepreneur of the Year” Award. During the past decade, Petinga has engaged in ventures that have changed the world for the better and redefined the meaning of success for all businesses.

In addition, he has collaborated on and funded several clinical trials with the University of Southern California’s Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of which is to better understand testicular cancer’s impact on male testosterone levels after treatment. Passionate about serving the community, Petinga has also founded the Fairy Foundation, the Center of Advocacy for Cancer of the Testes International (CACTI), and serves as a volunteer mentor with Imerman Angels of Chicago. Petinga gives motivational speeches and has written a book titled: “No One Ever Drowned in Sweat: G.R.I.T. — The Stuff of Leaders and Champions” “My book is about G.R.I.T. — guts, resilience, initiative and tenacity,” he said. “People like myself, Scott Hamilton, Elon Musk, Sir Richard Branson — we all have it. The main reason I decided to write the book was that if I'm not here to tell my story to my daughters, I want them to understand that you can achieve anything in life. It's all about working hard, persevering and never giving up.” “We take our health for granted,” he added. “Essentially battling cancer and the aftermath the last 15 years, I’m grateful to wake up every day. People forget that. Be happy that you get to experience the day, because so many people don't have that opportunity. So, for the ability to kiss my wife good morning and hold my kids, I mean, that's all I ask for. In remission from cancer for 13 years now, Petinga said his health issues transformed him into a new man with a vibrant, renewed appreciation for his family and loved ones. “I’m in and out of medical facilities every eight to 10 weeks for treatment,” he said. “It’s hard not to think about your legacy. A lot of the drive that I have, it’s so my kids can be proud of me when I’m no longer here. That’s what drives me to always put in 110 percent, no matter how horrible I feel.”

North Carolina boasts three female amateurs in world’s top 25

By KURT DUSTERBERG or as far back as Emilia Migliaccio can remember, Jennifer Chang and Gina Kim were part of her own golf story. “I was still slicing my drives and sculling my chips at the time,” Migliaccio says with a laugh. “I had just started golf and they were a lot better than I was at 10. As we got better, we were kind of the top three girls. I knew I had to beat both of them to win the tournament.” For nearly a decade, the three girls were the brightest lights on the North Carolina junior golf scene, making names for themselves in ever-broadening circles. Today, the three young women are still linked by their success on the course, but their impact on the game has reached new heights. Each is a 2018-19 NCAA All-America selection and ranked among the top 25 amateur golfers in the world. Migliaccio, a junior at Wake Forest University, is ranked 8th; Chang, a junior at University of Southern California is 13th; Kim, a sophomore at Duke University, is 22nd. “It’s kind of crazy to me, actually, three girls in the Triangle area,” Chang says. “It’s not that common.” In fact, they are the only threesome from the same metropolitan area among the 15 Americans ranked in the top 50 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. And while all three are top-rated rivals, they have something even better in common -they’re friends. For the past decade, they have played friendly rounds, fought for tournament titles and represented their country. Through it all, they’ve had each other’s backs. "I’m fortunate to have people like Jennifer and Emilia,” Kim says. “It’s hard

enough to find real good competition in your area, but also to have them as your friends. Being able to relate to them on the difficulties of having to travel, having to manage your life as college student-athletes, it’s just a blessing I’ve been given. I get to see them and how they handle pressure and learn from them.” Migliaccio and Chang both graduated from Athens Drive High School and live in Cary, while Kim lives in Chapel Hill. Now, between college commitments and summer tournament schedules, the friendships are mostly fostered on the road, where all three women share a clear priority. “Everyone is out there to win,” Chang says. “You’re friends off the golf course, but you’re not friends on the golf course. But we always support each other. When someone wins a tournament, we’re always like, ‘Great playing, you deserve it.’ So obviously, full-on support for both girls.” Even during tournaments, walking the line between competitors and friends isn’t difficult. “When you’re on the course, you want to win the tournament,” Migliaccio says. “But at the end of the day, if someone plays better, you’re just happy for them. We’re all supporting each other, while also being very competitive. But it’s not like a personal thing. Just play good golf and see what happens.” Sometimes that creates some heart-pounding drama. At the NCAA Women's Team Championship in May, Wake Forest and Duke met in the final, where Migliaccio faced Kim in match play. With their match tied after 17 holes, Migliaccio put her 156-yard approach shot within a foot of the cup to win the match 1-up. “I’ve played against Emilia before, so I knew how good she was,” Kim says. “Emilia played her heart out for her team.

I told told Emilia, ‘Great, great match. It was really fun playing with you.’” A few weeks after Duke earned a national championship with a 3-2 win, Migliaccio signed up for a no-

stress round at Duke University Golf Club. When Kim saw her name, she joined her. “It’s not like there was still tension because Duke beat Wake,” Migliaccio says. "It’s just completely normal.” So is the reality that the young women are rivals. They climbed past one another on tournament leaderboards over the summer, and their

So we asked them, “What do you admire about the other two players when they are on the golf course?” Jennifer’s take on … On Emilia: “Definitely her demeanor. She’s the one that everyone gets along with. She’s very outgoing. You look forward to playing with Emilia anytime you’re paired with her in a tournament. She has a lot of respect for the game and she works really hard to be where she’s at right now.” On Gina: ‘She’s one of the hardest-working players I’ve ever met. When I’m out practicing, she's probably practicing even longer. She’s such a great putter. When I see her putt, I think, I want to putt like Gina.” Gina's take on ... Jennifer: “Her course management is amazing. It blows my mind how consistent she can play. Even if she is having a bad day, you won’t be able to tell because she controls herself so well. She knows how to reduce mistakes and stay calm and keep fighting.” Emilia: “I love her distance control with any shot inside 100 yards. For pitch shots and wedge shots, she’s so consistent and deadly accurate. For match play, when you need those wedge shots to put some pressure on your opponent, she’s very, very good at that. It’s one of the reasons she’s so good in match play.” Emilia's take on ... Jennifer: “She has really good ball striking. She always has a one-yard draw. It’s a perfect, straight shot every time and she’s very consistent. Also, her wedges are very good.” Gina: “When we played partners at Junior Ryder Cup, she was so locked in the zone. She was like, ‘Emilia, we’ve got this!’ I feel like her mental strength is really, really good.” www.triadgolf.com

highly-ranked schools will meet again, too. As Migliaccio and Kim learned in the NCAA final, team competition only raises the stakes. “As much as I love Emilia and the close bonds we’ve created, I consider my team as part of my family at this point,” Kim said. The three women share one dream that may not be too far in the future. All three hope to play professionally on the LPGA Tour. Chang has taken the first steps, playing in the first stage of qualifying school in August. “We’ve known each other so long,” Chang says. “If we could continue our dream and play on the LPGA Tour with each other ... that would be a really neat experience.” In the meantime, they’ve made it all the way to adulthood, supplying a blend of competition and friendship that has paid off for each of them. “I’m proud of them, and we’re all proud of each other,” Migliaccio says. “It’s great to have people so close. We can all push each other to get to the top. It’s pretty awesome.”

We can argue in this column whether golf is supposed to be a leisurely stroll or a fast-paced exercise in precision. I prefer the latter and I’m sticking to my style. I walk fast, and swing faster. Pace officials are in the situation of investigation. It is not as cut-and-dry as a ball ending up in the water or rattling down the cart path. Here’s my plan – a shot clock. Start the time the same way rules officials have been taught for years to determine how long the player takes to get the shot away. As soon as the stop watch hits 40 seconds, the penalty is applied. No warning. But there is the reality of golf. A tee shot should not take 40 seconds. Easy approach shots should not take 40 seconds. Every single putt should not take 40 seconds. However, when the player’s stance is one foot in and one out of a bunker with a row of trees in the line of play, this could easily take more time. So, just like it other sports, the player is given a measure of time-outs. Let’s say, five. But, you are right about hanging over a shot. The other truth about golf; ball striking is not reactive. There’s the rub. Pokey players must be poked.

Magic numbers for Sullivan: 1 with The Wizard and 59 at Gaston

By STEVE WILLIAMS t has been an eventful year for Winston-Salem professional Ryan Sullivan. He qualified for the U.S. Open and, although he missed the cut, he had two memorable rounds at Pebble Beach. He has also had numerous top-10s on area developmental circuits and currently stands sixth on the SwingThought Tour money list, and eighth on the GPro Tour money list with close to $36,000 in combined earnings. And he achieved the magic number of shooting 59 for the first time on Aug. 12 at Gaston Country Club while playing in a tune-up for a SwingThought Tour event. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I made nine birdies and an eagle,â&#x20AC;? he said of the round on the par-70 course. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was just a money game with some other pros (Nathan Stamey, Josh Brock and Luke McClellan) and one of the other pros made a hole-in-one on the second hole. It was one of those weird days where birdies, eagles and low scores were flying. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had about a 12-footer on the ninth hole for all 3s on the front but I missed it. So that had to be the most disappointing 4 of my career.â&#x20AC;? The final numbers were 28-31--59. Sullivan, who turned pro in 2012 after playing at UNC Wilmington out of Forsyth Country Day, had posted 61 three previous times. But one of his biggest thrills was making a hole-in-one while playing with Ozzie Smith, the Major League Baseball hall-offamer known as The Wizard. It came on July 5 at Boone Valley Golf Club near St. Louis. Sullivan became acquainted with the former Cardinal great at the Metropolitan Open, a tournament in St. Louis, where he tied for fourth in June, winning $4,875. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I met Ozzie there last year and he invited me to come and play,â&#x20AC;? Sullivan said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had never played together before so it was a great time to make a hole-in-one.â&#x20AC;? The foursome also included Bobby Ray, who gained fame on the reality show Paradise Hotel earlier this year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were just out playing in a Saturday morning foursome,â&#x20AC;? Sullivan said. Sullivanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perfect shot came on the 8th hole, playing about 160 yards into the wind. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had to hit a hard 8-iron. I knew it was good in the air but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always a shock when it goes in.â&#x20AC;? Sullivan thinks it was his eighth ace. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s made a couple in competition, including a SwingThought Tour event at Tanglewood in 2018. One also came on a par-4 hole in Boise, Idaho. That one counts as an ace and also an albatross, one of his two double eagles. What kind of golfer is Ozzie Smith? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a heck of an athlete,â&#x20AC;? Sullivan said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Not many people his age (64) can move their lower body though the hitting area like he does. I was honestly really surprised how good a player he was. He gets it around and makes putts. It was really enjoyable to play with him. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a super nice guy.â&#x20AC;? Sullivan is hoping his strong play carries over to Q-School this fall where he will make another attempt to gain full status on the Korn Ferry Tour. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s working the Monday qualifier route this season and has made two events and while counting several close misses. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve played in two of them and missed getting in about four by a shot,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tough when you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have status.â&#x20AC;? Meanwhile, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s making the most of playing on the fringes of professional golf.
