or every PGA Tour player, there are hundreds, even thousands of guys like Ben Schlottman. Schlottman was a state champion at Forsyth Country Day, a star college golfer at Auburn who was named SEC freshman of the year and won the prestigious North and South Men’s Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Resort in 2018. A PGA Tour career was certainly within reach. If it were only that easy. In a span of just three years, Schlottman’s life has literally spanned the globe as his golf game -- in his mind, heart and soul – became less and less important in his overall attitude, landing him in Quantico, Va., and a military path in the U.S. Marines. After his impressive North and South title, Schlottman got cut in the first stage of Q School and began playing mini tour golf with varied success before heading overseas, in large part to be close to his girlfriend, who was playing soccer in Israel. Schlottman discovered the MENA Tour (Middle East North Africa Golf Tour) and had some success there with a few top 10 finishes, and also secured his Asian Developmental Tour Card, traveling back and forth between Thailand and the Middle East. “And then I went on vacation to Amsterdam with my girlfriend and that was when we heard of COVID, and we all had to go home and suspend all of our plans,” he said. Back in the Triad, Schlottman once again began to ponder his future in golf.

Schlottman selects service over scorecards “The military is something that has always been on my mind,” said Schlottman, whose older brother served as well as his grandfather in World War II. “I remember in college I would think ‘why am I not serving our country and other people who are just as capable as I am are?’ I have always been very physically active and mentally I am relatively sharp, so I just thought to myself if other people are doing this why am I not doing this? In college, you always think, ‘oh, I’m going to play on the PGA Tour’ and once you get out into pro golf you realize what a grind it is. “And I wasn’t as technically gifted as many golfers I saw. It’s one of those things where it was a culmination of all those factors as well as personally wanting to make my own mark -- I really wanted to find some kind of independence. I don’t want to necessarily say ‘go on a soul searching journey,’ but sort of start a new chapter.” It’s hard to say if Schlottman would still be playing golf overseas had the pandemic not began in early 2020. “That’s a great question,” he said. “I think I would still be playing golf because I wasn’t planning on coming back to the United States anytime soon. I was planning on finishing out through May on the MENA Tour. I was doing a lot better as far as results than the mini tours in the United States. You want to find that group of competitors that challenge you but doesn’t demoralize you, and that’s how I felt on the MENA Tour. If I played well I could compete to win, and if I

didn’t play that well I would still make the cut. On the mini tours in the United States if you don’t play well there is a good chance you’re going home $1,000 poorer. “When I was over there my mindset became ‘I don’t care about playing on the PGA Tour,’ I want to play on the European Tour and travel, and enjoy this ride as long as I can. It was becoming a vessel for me to see the world and also scrounge out enough money to pay for my next flight kind of deal, and really be able to enjoy different cultures and different foods and I made so many good friends over there. Sometimes you are the only people in a country that speak English so you say, ‘Hey man, you want to go to dinner?’ Even if you don’t like the guy you’re going to dinner with him.’’ So in June 2020 while back in North Carolina, Schlottman pulled the trigger, and

reached out to a Marine officer selection office in Raleigh and signed up. “I was sitting on my butt at home and not doing much, and I was just not very happy with where I was at,” Schlottman said. “It was almost one of those things that nothing (with golf) seemed like it was going to get going with COVID. I was like, ‘well, I’m kind of getting old for the military now and if I’m ever going to do it it was probably the time to do it.” At 25, has traded in his black bushy hair for a crew cut, and this August graduated with honors from Officer Candidate School with the U.S. Marines. “When you get there you immediately say ‘Oh my God, why did I do this?’ Schlottman said. “Anyone who has been any type of military training understands the transition from regular civilian life to where you have so many freedoms and then you go into this little bubble and being yelled at what to do every second of the day and you have no freedom at all. It’s a weird adjustment, especially for me coming from playing professional golf and pretty much being my own boss. But it’s the best decision I’ve ever made.”

he first lunch meeting in February 2012 between Pine Needles Resort president Kelly Miller and golf course architect Kyle Franz hit on a wide range of topics. At one point, Southern Pines Golf Club came up, and Franz sat up in his chair. Franz had played the 115-year-old course numerous times while he was executing bunker work at Pinehurst No. 2 for Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw as a rookie architect in his late 20s, and considered it to be one of the more interesting Donald Ross layouts with sweeping vistas, stunning topography and a fun test of golf. At the time almost a decade ago, Miller was operating award-winning and USGA favorite layout Pine Needles and sister resort Mid Pines, but had always had one eye on Southern Pines Golf Club, which had been owned by the Elks Club since 1951. “I played it with my father-in-law dating back to 1981,” Miller said. “I’ve played a lot of rounds there and I’ve always loved Southern Pines. I’ve been trying to purchase it for 20-plus years, and it probably worked out best that I didn’t get it until now because no telling what I would have done 20 years ago.” When Miller acquired the former Elks Club course last year, he immediately swung Franz into action on a renovation project. Franz, now 40, had already done stunning work for Miller at Mid Pines (2013) and Pine Needles (2018), so he was the natural choice to work his magic on this Southern Pines course. There is no telling what Franz would have created if his Ross renovation work had been reversed. “I’m really glad I did this project third and last of the three because of the escalating requirements we’ve had at

The “soil stabilization” cart path product was first used by Franz during his renovation work at Raleigh Country Club last year and blends in more with the natural Sandhills scenery than concrete. Miller says golfers will immediately notice some fantastic design features by Franz. “First of all, the course is so much more open than what it was, and we still have some work to do as it relates to tree removal,” Miller said. “We’re raised the canopy so you can see through the golf course. Overall, this course has such phenomenal topography and the vistas here are spectacular. And one of the best set of par 3s, really anywhere, and Kyle has done great work on them. It is scaled properly for the average guy, but this is going to be quite a test at 6,900 yards as a par-70. This will be all anybody wants to play.” The second hole is the first of a half dozen where Franz restored and added back into the layout fairways “crossing features” that include mounding, native grasses and bunkers to create a series of forced carries through the course. The Franz design also reintroduces a “lost hole” that was deemed unsafe to play back in the day. It’s just another historic touch that Franz has added to create what golfers will surely find as yet another visually stimulating experience from the 40-year-old architect. “Southern Pines Golf Club has always been in my heart,” added Franz. “I’m so thrilled how it turned out.”

No small accomplishment for Smalley at Wyndham Championship By BRAD KING

lex Smalley didn’t quite play his way into the six-man playoff to determine the 2021 Wyndham Championship, eventually won by Kevin Kisner. Nevertheless, the former Duke star captured plenty of attention along the way. Playing on his home course at Sedgefield Country Club, the 24-year-old Smalley carded three rounds in the 60s, responding to the heat of Sunday’s finalround pressure in equally torrid fashion, finishing his day with three straight birdies and a 66. In just his fifth PGA Tour event, playing on a sponsor’s exemption in a full-field event on the last weekend of the 10

PGA Tour regular season, Smalley finished at 10-under par and tied for 29th. His top 30 effort earned him a check for $41,013 and a spot in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, the three-event series that determines PGA Tour eligibility for the 2021-22 season. Smalley has made the cut in all five of his PGA Tour starts, and earned enough FedExCup points to finish inside the top-200 and qualify for the first Korn Ferry playoff event in Boise, Idaho. On Saturday morning, having secured the Wyndham cut, Smalley reserved airline tickets to fly to Boise. “I don’t know that I can put it into words,” he said. “To have the opportunity to play for a PGA Tour card in the Korn Ferry finals is huge. To have the opportunity to not have to go to Korn Ferry Q (qualifying) school is huge. I just have to go play like I know

how to play.” Smalley was born in Rochester, N.Y., but grew up outside of Raleigh in Wake Forest, competing against peers such as current PGA Tour standout Doc Redman. His buttery smooth golf swing was built with help from instructor David Sykes at Heritage Golf Club in Wake Forest. But Smalley stopped taking lessons by the time he was 14. Throughout middle school and high school, he and his father, Terry, had a standing golf game every weekend. Terry got to know his son’s swing tendencies. “He told me what he saw and I would fix it,” Smalley said. “I haven’t really seen an instructor since then.” His family moved to Greensboro near the end of Smalley’s high school career, and he joined Sedgefield in June of 2020

and estimates he has played 75 rounds or more on the classic Donald Ross design. Smalley enjoyed plenty of local support during the week. Along with his father and his mother, Maria — both of whom have caddied for Smalley throughout his career — his sister, Katie, and numerous friends and playing partners from Sedgefield followed his group and rooted him on. “It was nice to hear the cheers out there,” Smalley said. “I don’t get to play in front of a whole lot of people very often. It’s pretty cool to have people scream at you after you make a putt.” Smalley’s grandmother, Ruby Lyons, even traveled down from Ohio to watch one of her nine grandchildren compete against some of the world’s best. “We’re Continued on page 11 www.triadgolf.com

Ruby walked with her grandson on Thursday and Saturday. “I was joking with my family,” Smalley said. “(My grandmother) didn’t walk with us in the second round on Friday and I shot 6 under, and Sunday I shot 4 under. So, I said she’s not coming out to watch anymore.” In Sunday’s final round, Smalley said he “had the break of a lifetime on 15,” after he hit his tee shot into the weeds on the right and assumed the ball was headed out of bounds. Instead, he found it deeply buried, but in bounds. A rules official said the ball was embedded, enabling Smalley to take a free drop on the matted part of the long grass. From there, he chipped out sideways, hit a 5-iron from 210 yards to 7 feet and made it “for an easy 4,” he said. On the par-3 16th, Smalley knocked it to 3 feet for a kick-in birdie. Though his tee shot on No. 17 found the rough — “not the greatest place to be with where that pin was” — Smalley was able to use the green’s slope and his approach ended up 15 feet from the hole. “That putt

ing hole found the fairway, Smalley hit it close again. “I told my caddie walking up 18 I wanted to get it to double digits,” he said. “I couldn’t have dreamt of a better finish.” Smalley knows how to go low. During an all-state high school career, he once shot 60 in the junior club championship at Heritage GC. The Duke University 2019 first-team All-American and Ben Hogan Award semifinalist also shot 61 at the 2018 Louisville Cardinal Challenge. Smalley was a four-year letterman at Duke and the 2019 ACC Men’s Golf Scholar Athlete of the Year, graduating with a 3.6 GPA studying environmental science. He left as one of Duke’s most decorated players ever, holding the best career scoring average, the best singleseason scoring average, the most top-5 finishes and the most sub-70 rounds in school history. At the 2016 U.S. Amateur, Smalley finished one shot back of the all-time scoring record during the stroke-play portion, capturing medalist honors by shooting 65-68. He also qualified for the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills in Wisconsin. In 2018 and 2019, he became the first player since Rickie Fowler to win backto-back Sunnehanna Amateurs, and later

he was a member of both the 2019 U.S. Arnold Palmer Cup team and the Walker Cup team, registering a 3-1-0 record in each event. More recently, Smalley posted backto-back finishes in the top five on the Forme Tour, an eight-event circuit providing U.S.-based players a route to the Korn Ferry Tour qualifying tournament, while the PGA Tour Canada has been off limits due to COVID-19 restrictions. Wyndham Championship tournament director Mark Brazil said he regularly sees Smalley practicing at the club and was happy to give him one of the sponsor’s exemptions. “He’s got some real game -- a great young man. I was excited about giving him a spot,” Brazil said. For Smalley, finishing strong in a PGA Tour event on his home course was a dream come true. Afterward, he took to Twitter to sum up the experience: “Wow, what a week! It’s tough to put into words how much this past week meant to me. Playing in front of a home crowd was incredible. I will be forever grateful to @WyndhamChamp for giving me this opportunity. Time to get back to work the next 3 weeks at the Korn Ferry Finals!”

North Carolina-based companies get creative during pandemic By BRAD KING

hough it may be slowing a bit, by most accounts golf’s “shutdown boom” has continued into the second half of 2021. The National Golf Foundation (NGF) reports that U.S. rounds are running 19 percent above the 2017-2019 average. Rounds at public courses are outpacing growth in rounds at private clubs, with public rounds played up 26 percent this year against a 13 percent increase in private loops. Meanwhile, quarterly results for the game’s two largest publicly-traded equipment companies similarly reflect the continuing positive surge. Callaway Golf reported golf equipment revenues that “rose 91 percent in the second quarter, while [Titleist parent company] Acushnet said golf club sales rose 111 14

percent and golf ball revenues were up 98.1 percent,” according to a Yahoo Finance report. All of which is welcome news for a pair of North Carolina companies that have long endeavored to carve out their own niche in the golf industry. Since 1983, Wilmington-based ProTag America Inc. (www.protag.com) has produced high-quality utility items and promotional products that project the image of a golf course in a lasting and dignified way. Six years ago, husband and wife Gordon and Leslie Schenk purchased ProTag from a husband-wife team who started the business nearly four decades earlier. “They were a real company that was very much focused on their customers and outstanding customer service,” said Gordon Schenk. “When they left

the business, it was important to them that their baby — they didn’t have any kids — would be carried along much the same way that they treated it.” The Schenks are a “passionate golf family,” according to Gordon, who was formerly a partner in an injection molding company in Indiana that produced the earth-friendly Eco Tee, made out of 100 percent recycled polymer. “You could easily use one of our tees for 10 rounds of golf,” Schenk said. ProTag generally participates in the world’s largest annual gathering of the golf industry, the PGA Merchandise Show each January. The 2021 edition of “The Show” was forced to shift to a virtual event to connect the international golf industry online. While there are typically several dozen North Carolina-based companies exhibiting their wares at the

merchandise show, in 2021 that number was reduced to just a small handful. And those who did pay to play found themselves needing to get creative. ProTag made moves that in hindsight appear prescient. Recognizing the important role that “face time” plays in the business, the ProTag team developed a zoom trade show booth, which includes product cameras and screen sharing capabilities. “Our goal was to make someone feel like they were standing across from us,” Schenk said. “Collaborating with customers over concepts, colors, designs, etc., in a private and unrushed zoom has actually improved the design process. Flynn’s rally in Forsyth tourney falls short despite ace By STEVE WILLIAMS

leven shots back and in a tie for 11th place after two rounds of the Forsyth Championship, Kenny Flynn of Winston-Salem needed a miraculous final round if he wanted to claim the title for the second time, some 10 years after he first won it. Flynn came close – thanks in part to a hole-in-one on the 160-yard 11th hole at Tanglewood Park’s Championship Course. His final round 66 was the low score of the day and it left him four shots off the pace of Michael Robb, who led wire-to-wire in the 74th playing of the tournament. Flynn’s ace came Aug. 8 with a 9-iron as Chris Logan, Lance Link and Dewayne Blakely witnessed. It was his third career ace – the other two registered at Reynolds Park’s second hole.
