A TAKE ON MODERN DANCE, VISUAL ART Alex Lewontin for Triangle Today If you’ve ever felt like you don’t get experimental modern dance, you’re not alone. “There’s sort of a PR problem we have with modern dance,” says Justin Tornow. “People are a little like, ‘I don’t know what I’m getting into!’” Tornow is one of the minds behind “SHOW,” a new multimedia project by a group of Durham creatives that includes Tornow’s dance company, COMPANY, which was founded in 2013. Visual artist Heather Gordon and filmmaker Alex Maness and lighting designer Chris Fleming round out the set of collaborators. Tonight “SHOW” will take over the The Fruit in Durham, a warehouse that once housed industrial coolers for produce, and now serves as a space for modern art. “SHOW” is truly a mixed-media project, comprised of dance, live sound mixing, visual art installations, complex lighting de-

sign, videography and photography. The parts are all tied together by a thematic thread. “The prompt we’re all working under is the idea of absence and presence,” Tornow said. “There’s a lot of layers of ‘When are we present, when are we absent?’ Is it by agency and choice, or is it not?” How those themes are conveyed will be subtle. For example, dancers — a different group each night — won’t dance on a traditional stage. Instead, the audience is almost part of the cast with the interactions varying from night to night. They’ll view the performance from all sides. Three sides will have seating, but from those three sides, the dancers will be somewhat obscured by a gauzy screen. The fourth side will be open and easily visible, but without seating. “I keep things wide open for a reason,” Tornow said. “Not to be vague and mys-

terious, but to invite people to participate as an audience member. I don’t want to lead anyone into thinking that there’s a right answer in my mind.” “SHOW” is being developed as a framework for future performances so it can be restaged in different venues by different collaborators. “We’re honing in on what we’ve been trying to accomplish since beginning our work together,” Gordon said in a news release. “We are providing an idea, a framework, a seed in the hopes creating a laboratory for other groups of artists to experiment in. It’s a way to set-up collaborations without hindering personal interests and exploration, where all the inquiries strengthen the conceptual whole.” However, if the meaning behind artistic

decisions aren’t immediately apparent, Tornow wants the audience to know that’s OK. “I just want to have a meet-up to talk to people about how they don’t have to get it,” Tornow said. “I just want them to come and see, and feel like they have enough agency to do that and participate. See what you see, I’m not trying to tell you anything. Just enjoy. There’s no answer; there’s nothing to decode.”

NC STATE FAIR RANKS NINTH IN THE COUNTRY

Roy C. Dicks for Triangle Today

Abbie Bennett for Triangle Today

This month, theatre fans may want to squeeze in some time between beach trips and mountain vacations for these productions.

The North Carolina State Fair is No. 9 among all other fairs in the country.

That is, if you believe MSN’s ranking. The fair that attracts about 1 million people to Raleigh for 11 days each year is the largest agriculture event in the nation, MSN reported, adding that the fair features “a horse show, livestock show and a Krispy Kreme cheeseburger” — and that doesn’t even scratch the surface of the Tar Heel state’s annual fair. But which fairs topped it? Here are MSN’s top 10 fairs in the United States: 1. The Minnesota State Fair: The second-largest fair in the U.S., it had nearly 2 million visitors last year and covers 320 acres. The “pizzarito” and “Miracle of Life barn” are highlights, according to MSN.

8. The Iowa State Fair: It features a cow sculpture made of butter and 82 different foods on a stick. It’s inspired books, three movies and a Broadway musical, according to MSN. 9. The North Carolina State Fair: This year’s fair is Oct. 11-21. 10. The Fryeburg Fair in Maine: The largest steer and oxen show, plus wreath-making demonstrations and the “cast-iron skillet throw.” The North Carolina State Fair was founded in 1853. It was canceled in 1861-68 during the Civil War and Reconstruction. And, President Theodore Roosevelt spoke at the fair in 1905. Here’s more state fair history: • Cary United Methodist Church served the first — now iconic — ham biscuit at the fair in 1916.

2. The State Fair of Texas: It’s twice as long as North Carolina’s fair and the largest fair in the country. It features deep-fried Froot Loops and funnel cake bacon queso burgers. Say that five times fast.

• In 1958, State College scientists operated an atomic reactor during the fair.

3. The San Diego County Fair: With about 1.6 million visitors each year, it’s one of the largest county fairs in the U.S. with corn husking contests, gem and mineral shows and turkey legs wrapped in bacon.

• President Bill Clinton held a meeting at the fair in September 1996 to speak to workers using the fairgrounds as an emergency staging area for disaster response after Hurricane Fran.

4. The Eastern States Exposition: “New England’s great state fair” features a wine and cheese barn and a signature dessert, “the Big E Cream Puff.”

• In 1965, black and white 4-H groups were allowed to compete together at the fair for the first time. • President Gerald Ford spoke at the fair in 1976.

• In 2005, Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler and fairgoers filled an old barn with tobacco and let it cure throughout the fair. • The fair hosted its first Military Appreciation Day in 2006.

5. The Deerfield Fair: It’s known as “New England’s oldest family fair.”

• A beer brewing competition was introduced in 2012.

6. The OC Fair in Costa Mesa: Wine seminars (whatever those are), plus chocolate-covered bacon, deep-fried butter and, of course, fried zucchini — because it’s California.

For more information on this year’s upcoming North Carolina State Fair, go to ncstatefair. org/2018.

7. The Wisconsin State Fair: Known for its cream puffs — and it sells more than 350,000 of them each year.

• In 2016, the fair introduced the first permanent ride on the fairgrounds — the State Fair Flyer.
