AMERICAN DANCE FESTIVAL presented by
FROM MAJOR DEBUTS TO CROWD FAVORITES kidstown.triangletoday.com
Linda Haac for Triangle Today
We dove into through this year’s lineup to pick some of our best bets. Use this as your guide.
Putting together a dance season is never an easy task, nor is it easy to predict how a live performance will turn out. But Jodee Nimerichter, executive director of the American Dance Festival, wants as many people as possible to see acclaimed performances from national dance companies and choreographers, whether attendees are first-timers or longtime season ticket-holders.
Must-see performances at Carolina Theatre
Plus, there is a new feature — an ADF alumni weekend with a first-ever concert by five former ADF students — and, as always, an ADF faculty concert and a musicians’ concert with ADF School musicians. There will be tours, parties and hundreds of young dancers in Durham. The American Dance Festival began to make Durham its year-round home almost 10 years ago, and it continues to draw a dizzying array of talent. This year’s festival will feature 53 performances by 26 companies and choreographers in 7 different venues. All are in Durham except for the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh.

“Wondrous Women” features five women, five solos — five works created by women at a time when women are raising their voices like never before — a showcase for the diversity of female choreographers in dance today. The shows are scheduled for The Carolina Theatre in downtown Durham, a handsome, old historic space, although not usually an ADF venue. Friday, July 13, 8 p.m., and Saturday, July 14, 7 p.m. Crowd-Pleasers and more at Durham Performing Arts Center Pilobolus is back again with another ADF-commissioned world premiere slated for the big stage, for the first time showcasing a female trio of dancers in what was once an all-male company. Given the line-up, the show should be a sumptuous look at why a company made history with its astonishing physicality — acrobatic, sculptural, even comic. Also included will be “Gnomen,” featuring a male

EVEN IF YOU DRESS CONSERVATIVELY AT WORK, YOU CAN EXPRESS YOURSELF WITH FUN SOCKS
Exec Socks is a sock monthly subscription service based in Raleigh delivering new pairs of executive-style socks to members. Courtesy of Exec Socks
Jennifer Bringle for Triangle Today Working in a corporate environment, Suresh Bhagchandani enjoyed indulging his love of fashion through tailored suits and pops of color and pattern with his neckties. But as dress codes began to relax, and suits and ties became less common in favor of business casual attire, Bhagchandani discovered he actually enjoyed accessorizing with his ties. In search of a similar accessory that would allow him to explore his flair for fashion in a relaxed office environment, he realized the answer was at his feet: socks. “It’s amazing how socks have been one of the most overlooked items in men’s wardrobes. Socks can add a lot of depth to one’s outfit,” he says. “They are a great way to elevate your mood and show your confidence.” But as he began shopping for socks that were fun and fashionable, while also being work-appropriate, he found the options lacking. So, he decided to create his own line, selling the socks as a subscription service called Exec Socks. The socks come in a rainbow of colors and fun, yet office-appropriate, designs that include argyles, polka dots and stripes. And they don’t just look good. Bhangchandani wanted them to
feel good, too. “We also are committed to quality and comfort,” he says. “This is a top priority because we understand when wearing something for six to eight hours a day, it needs to be comfortable. Our socks are made of 90 percent cotton, which helps absorb any sweat and is smooth on your feet.” As the business has grown over the past two years, Bhangchandani has looked for ways to support the local community. This month, he partners with Oak City Outreach Center, a local nonprofit working to end hunger and homelessness in the Triangle. For every subscription order placed through Father’s Day, June 17, using the promo code DADSOCKS, Exec Socks will donate a pair of socks to the center. “When we first began connecting charities in the community, we learned that socks were one of the most needed, but least donated, items available to men, women and children in need,” he says. “Think about it: When people donate clothing items, it’s usually shirts, pants and shoes. We all need socks as well.” For Bhangchandani, these partnerships with local charities are a way to say thank you to the community that has supported him and allowed his business to thrive.

Who is Willie Nelson bringing to his Charlotte makeup concert?

Théoden Janes for Triangle Today When Willie Nelson returns to Charlotte’s PNC Music Pavilion this week to make up the concert he couldn’t perform last month, he’ll be bringing along an entirely new lineup of guests. The most noteworthy? The Avett Brothers, the three-time Grammy Award-nominated folk-rock group that hails from Concord. Country music artist Jamey Johnson will co-headline with the Avetts and Willie Nelson (performing with his Family band) at the Outlaw Music Festival redux on Wednesday, June 20; the opening act will be Sarah Shook & The Disarmers, an alt-country band from Chapel Hill. The 2018 incarnation of the festival
originally came to Charlotte on May 26, when Sturgill Simpson, Old Crow Medicine Show, Wild Feathers and Mitchell Lee performed ahead of what was to be a night-capping set by Nelson. But the 85-year-old Country Music Hall of Famer twice came on stage and almost immediately walked back off of it, and his set was eventually scrapped without him ever playing or singing a single note. Promoter Live Nation announced late that evening that he was unable to perform “due to illness.” Fans who saw that show will be able to return on June 20 with the same tickets, which will be honored again. Additionally, tickets for the makeup date are on sale now at livenation.com.
