THEATRE REVIEW

‘CRUMBLE (LAY ME DOWN, JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE)’ Roy C. Dicks for Triangle Today

Sheila Callaghan’s 70-minute one-act, “Crumble (Lay Me Down, Justin Timberlake),” is packed with insights on the loss of loved ones and parent-child dynamics, employing humorous and absurdist elements. The Women’s Theatre Festival’s excellent production sets a new standard for its offerings. Here’s the premise. It’s Christmastime, and 11-year-old Janice is still mourning the death of her father from a tragic accident

the previous Christmas. Her mother, Clara, is dealing with being a widow and must also grapple with Janice’s reclusive and often bizarre behavior. Janice imagines visits from pop star Justin Timberlake, who comforts her. Clara’s sister Barbara offers unhelpful advice based on being a “mother” to 57 cats. As Clara and Janice’s lives seem to crumble, so does their old apartment, which registers its resentment (anthropomorphically through another actor). The script Callaghan’s whimsical scenario

shows deeply felt sympathy for family struggles, as well as for wonderful architecture that becomes neglected. It takes a few minutes to get into the script’s special world, but it develops beautifully into a clever and moving experience. Kimmy Fiorentino as 11-year-old Janice, who is still

Jay-Z, Beyoncé release surprise album

Beyoncé and Jay-Z are the road again, this time for “On the Run II.” They’ll be in the Carolinas August 21 in Columbia. Aaron M. Sprecher PictureGroup Triangle Today/AP Jay-Z and Beyoncé are keeping up a family tradition, dropping a surprise album before anyone knew it was coming. The couple released a joint album that touches on the rapper’s disgust at this year’s Grammy Awards and features a shout out from their daughter Blue Ivy to her siblings. The nine-track album “Everything Is Love” dropped Saturday on the Tidal music streaming service that Jay-Z partially owns. It now appears to be available on other streaming services as well. The album features Beyoncé rapping on songs more than she has done on previous releases. One song that has a profanity in its title includes Jay-Z lashing out at the Grammys. He was the top nominee at February’s awards show, but left empty-handed. The rapper also says he turned down the NFL Super Bowl halftime show, rapping that the league needs him more than he needs them. Blue Ivy ends the song “BOSS” with a shout-out to her 1-year-old brother and sister, Rumi and Sir. In 2013, Beyoncé released the self-titled album “Beyoncé” without any notice.

MEAL DELIVERY KITS:

are they worth it for your family? Kids Town for Triangle Today Dinner can be a daunting and time-consuming task. Meal planning, grocery shopping, prepping, preparing, catering to multiple tiny mouths all with different tastes--just thinking about it can make you anxious and reaching for the takeout menu. In recent years, many new companies have popped up offering food delivery kits, places such as Blue Apron, Green Chef and HelloFresh just to name a few. It’s easy to see that there’s no shortage of these types of services available in most urban areas, but have you taken the plunge yet? Are you on the fence, wondering if it’s the right choice for your family? Although there are many types of food delivery companies, the majority seem to be aimed at dinnertime meals to help the stressed-out parent. Dinner options are abundant, ranging from gluten free to vegetarian, Paleo-inspired to all organic. Most services offer you the option to choose, but if your family is strict about their diet, make sure to seek out a food kit service that specializes specifically in your diet preferences. Pros • Convenient, hassle-free delivery. No more grocery shopping after work or dedicating a weekend day to fighting the crowds. Delivery services send out your packaged meals to your door in a refrigerated box, ensuring your food is safe until you can bring it inside. • No wasted food. Because the servings are pre-portioned, you receive only the amount you request. Does a recipe only call for 1/4 tablespoon of fresh dill? That’s what you’ll receive! No more wilting herbs or spoiling producing sitting in your fridge. Cutting down on food waste should be everyone’s priority and luckily food delivery services take the guess work out of it, helping the environment and your pocketbook. • No more meal planning. Delivery services offer a multitude of options each week for you to choose from, making a parent’s mental load a bit lighter as they no longer have to leaf through recipe books or consult the tiny critics in their house for the weekly menu. • Simple, easy-to-follow directions. Directions are laid out in a very black-and-white format making it easy for parents to prepare and allowing kids to help if desired.

Cons • Overabundance of packaging. Because everything is pre-portioned, each ingredient is typically in it’s own container. Ice packs and bubble wrap are also included in your box in order to provide safe shipping, items which usually end up in the trash. Most materials are recyclable and some companies even provide biodegradable packaging but the sheer volume of it can seem daunting and unnecessary. • Not enough meals for the week. Many companies only allow the option to choose three or four meals a week, leaving you scrambling to prepare other meals on top of what you receive from the service. • Expensive. For the average family, the prices may not be conducive to their budget. The prices of the service go up depending on how many people the meals feed, then families have to factor in money for breakfasts, lunches, and other snacks. Many of these services are geared toward the working parent who has no time to meal plan, prep, and shop. This convenient service takes out the few extra steps and provide simplicity. There are many pros and cons to each delivery service, but, as with anything, finding out if the services are worth it is up to each individual family and may take some trial and error.

BEST SUMMER BOOKS 2018

VACATION, BEACH READS Bridgette A. Lacy for Triangle Today Whether you’re looking for a beach book with a Southern belle or two, an adventure with a pirate on North Carolina’s coast or literary fiction that you can discuss at the next barbecue, local booksellers and publishers have plenty of suggestions for a summer read for you. What makes for a good summer read anyway? “I think it’s different things to different people,” said Jamie Fiocco, owner and general manager of Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill. “For some people, the traditional interpretation is an easy read that entertains. Maybe you want to laugh or cry, but you don’t want to be reminded about everyday challenges. “For other people, assuming they have more time to read, they may use this time they want to spend more time thinking about, which means it may be non-fiction, poetry or more literary fiction,” she says. Sue Lucey, co-owner of Page 158 Books in Wake Forest, craves a story that gives her a “book hangover.”

“That’s when you don’t want to leave that world because you have become attached to the characters,” Lucey said. Mamie Potter, a bookseller at Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh, believes a summer read should be more entertaining and more engrossing. She suggests literary works that you can’t put down. Sara Seten Berghausen, an associate curator of collections at Duke University, recommends books that create conversation. She sits on a committee that helps choose books for incoming freshmen to Duke. “It should be something intellectually enriching, fodder for discussion, a book that addresses significant issues, something meaty to talk about,” she said.
