DANCE BRINGS FAMILY TOGETHER, REMAINS

‘SOURCE OF LIFE’ Linda Haac for Triangle Today

When Jodee Nimerichter landed a college internship in New York City 27 years ago with the American Dance Festival, one of the country’s oldest modern-dance festivals, she set her life’s course — job, marriage, children, home. She rose through the ranks of ADF to become executive director of the annual Durham event that features acclaimed performances from national dance companies and choreographers. This year’s festival is June 14 to July 21, but ADF programming now spans the entire year. Through the festival, she met her husband, Gaspard Louis, a dancer from Haiti.

The couple, now married 13 years, have made Durham their home, leaving behind New York City and their 500-square-foot apartment. They have two children who spend time learning about the dance world that occupies their parents’ lives. “They’ve grown up going to performances,” Nimerichter said of their children. Before the dance festival kicks into overdrive, we sat down with Nimerichter and Louis to talk about the upcoming festival and how dance connects them. “The arts have always been a part of who we are,” Louis said.

MEALS TO MAKE WITH YOUR KIDS Kids Town for Triangle Today It’s no surprise that most kids love to help out in the kitchen. This quick and easy meal works perfect for breakfast or lunch. And, aside from the few minutes it takes to cook on the stove, your kids can get pretty hands on with this one. What you’ll need: • butter • 2 slices of bread • 2 eggs • salt and pepper, to taste • a glass To get started, have the kids take the glass and press down in the center of each piece of bread, cutting out a round piece of bread. These pieces can be put in the toaster. Next, have them lightly butter both sides of the remaining bread. While they’re doing this, preheat the pan on the stove over medium heat. Once the pan is ready and the bread is buttered, place the pieces of bread in the pan and crack one egg in the center of each. Salt and pepper to taste. Cook for approximately 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden and the eggs are cooked, making sure the yolk is still soft for dipping. Remove from pan, and have the kids butter their round pieces of toast. Now they’re all set to dip and enjoy! AVOCADO BLT WRAPS Not your traditional BLT, this wrap uses healthy avocado instead of dressing. What you’ll need: 1 avocado 1 tomato lettuce 4 slices of bacon 2 flour tortillas

Following package directions, have your kids cook the bacon in the microwave until desired crispiness and set aside. Next, with some help and guidance from you, slice the tomato and cut the avocado in half. Using spoons, the kids can scoop the avocado out and into a bowl, mashing it up until it’s a creamy consistency. Then, have them shred the lettuce. Once everything’s ready, spread a layer of the avocado on the tortilla and then layer the lettuce, tomato and bacon. Roll up and enjoy! MICROWAVE SCRAMBLE This one is as quick as it is easy. All you need are a couple of minutes! What you’ll need: • 2 coffee or soup mugs • 4 eggs • 2 tbs milk • shredded cheese of your choice • kids choice of fresh ingredients such as: cubed ham, chopped veggies, mushrooms, etc. salt and pepper, to taste In each mug, have your kids crack and add two eggs. Then have them put in 1 tbs of milk and stir. Next, they can add the amount of shredded cheese they’d like along with the other ingredients they prefer. Help them add the salt and pepper. Cooking one at a time, place a mug in the microwave for approximately 45 seconds. Have your child stir it and then cook for an additional 30-45 seconds. Repeat with the other mug. Your kids will love that they made their own delicious and healthy scrambled eggs!

At 19, Khalid is racking up awards and hits, and he’s just getting started Ed Condran for Triangle Today Khalid isn’t an overnight sensation but he’s close to sporting that tag. The R&B singer-songwriter, who is also known as Khalid Robinson, hit the Billboard charts in 2016 with the single “Location.” That was just a year after Khalid signed with RCA as a 17-year-old. Two years later, he went to the Grammy Awards with five nominations, including best new artist, best R&B song (“Location”) and song of the year. Just a few weeks ago, he won the top new artist award at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards. It’s an impressive rise for an uncompromising young recording artist, who crafts sensual, stylish and soothing tunes. Khalid will showcase songs from his debut album “American Teen,” including current hit “Young Dumb & Broke,” when he performs June 7 at Red Hat Amphitheater. Here’s what you should know about Khalid. 1. Khalid loves sonic diversity Lorde, Frank Ocean, Father John Misty, Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper, Grizzly Bear and James Blake are among his varied group of influences. No wonder “American Teen” is so eclectic. Khalid told the Indepen-

dent in 2017 that genres almost seem like unnecessary genres. “Music’s just so much bigger than… everything,” he told the British paper. “Genres were definitely created for radio, and radio is still a powerhouse but it’s not the way we receive music right now, we listen to it in so many different ways. So you always have so many different suggestions.”

2. Around the world His mother served in the Army, and Khalid grew up a military brat. He bounced around from Germany to Kentucky to New York to Texas. 3. Friends in high places Khalid has blown up in part because of tastemakers Kendall and Kylie Jenner. Like the famous sisters or not, the members of the Kardashian brood can make or break artists or products, and they love Khalid. The Jenners have tweeted and shared snapchats of themselves listening to his music. KHALID When: 8 p.m. June 7 Where: Red Hat Amphitheater, 500 S. McDowell St., Raleigh.
