GRILL & SPIRITS Greg Cox for Triangle Today
The first time you walk through the door at Bawarchi Grill & Spirits, you may well think you’ve got the wrong address. The decor yields virtually no clue that this is an Indian restaurant.
Does Bawarchi deliver on that promise? Well, yes and no.
In a way you have, though you won’t find wings or nachos on the menu. Bawarchi inherited its look from Rookie’s Sports Bar, the previous tenant where the Indian restaurant opened in January. The decision to retain its predecessor’s decor lock, stock and beer barrel was no doubt a cost-saving measure.
The food certainly holds up its end of the bargain. The “Grill” in this case is a tandoor, the Indian clay oven where veteran chef Gunasekar Arumugan turns out grilled and roasted meats and serves them up sizzling on a cast iron platter. Bawarchi’s tandoori offering is exceptionally broad, with a dozen options ranging from pomfret to mint-marinated chicken Hariyali kebab. The mixed grill is a shareable sampler of chicken tikka, tandoori chicken, lamb sausage (seekh kebab), shrimp tikka and a lamb chop. All but the shrimp (overcooked) were on the money when I ordered the mixed grill recently.
It could also be seen as setting the mood for the concept embodied in the “Grill & Spirits” part of the name. Aimed at broadening the appeal of Indian cuisine, the name promises an unintimidating experience for those less familiar with Indian cuisine.
A handful of items scattered throughout the rest of the menu reinforce the contemporary Westerner-friendly concept. Avocado kofta, for one, turn out to be delicately crisp fritters served with mango salsa and a small mixed green salad.
Everywhere you look are TV screens tuned to soccer matches, tennis tournaments and the NBA playoffs. Suspended from the rafters, college team banners and sponsor-emblazoned hoods of stock cars add to the illusion that you’ve stumbled into a sports bar.

HOPSCOTCH MUSIC FEST LINEUP David Menconi for Triangle Today
TRIANGLE TODAY | THE NEWS & OBSERVER
did you know? JUNE IS NATIONAL CAMPING MONTH Kids Town for Triangle Today
Liz Phair is one of the Hopscotch featured acts. Hopscotch Music Festival has rolled out its 2018 lineup of acts — all 80 of them — and so far the biggest headliner is Miguel, the acclaimed singer-songwriter. The Grammy Award winner also is the voice behind this year’s Oscar best song winner “Remember Me” from the film “Coco.” Hopscotch’s Red Hat Amphitheater and City Plaza main stages also will feature 1990s-vintage alternative-rock darling Liz Phair; MC50, a reconstituted version of Detroit power-rock band MC5 on a “Kick Out the Jams” 50-year anniversary tour; the cinematic indie-rock collective Grizzly Bear; and avant-bassist Thundercat. A fair number of North Carolina acts are in the mix, too, including Boulevards, Mipso and Zack Mexico on the main stage. Sarah Shook, Dex Romweber, Das Drip, Hot at Nights with Nicolay, Bangzz, Nance, Beauty World, Stevie, Greensboro’s Blueberry and Asheville’s Indigo De Souza and Space Heater are among the area acts playing the nightclub portion of Hopscotch. Also playing the clubs at Hopscotch will be The Revolution, the late Prince’s old band from 1984’s “Purple Rain”; alt-country forebears the Jayhawks; and rising indie-rock stars Waxahatchee, a band that records for Durhambased Merge Records. Tickets are $199 for a general-admission pass, with VIP packages starting at $299. Passes allow entry into all festival clubs, three City Plaza headlining shows, and three Red Hat Amphitheater headlining shows. Single show passes for all City Plaza and Red Hat shows as well as 1-Day passes will go on sale later this summer.

It’s time to pack your sleeping bags and get ready to pitch your tents because June is National Camping Month. Even if it’s just a simple popup tent and a sleeping bag in your backyard, get out there and reconnect with the great outdoors. Unwind, unplug and simply enjoy nature while spending some quality time with your loved ones. Plus, research shows that those who camp as a hobby tend to be happier and more relaxed in life. Looking back at American history, camping was simply considered the way of life and definitely not seen as a recreational hobby. This perspective changed during the 1800s, when a man named Thomas Hiram Holding began a mission to introduce camping as a hobby rather than a lifestyle. His passion for camping began to spread and later evolved into what we see camping as today. So whether backpacking through the woods or choosing campsites that offer more extravagant camping experiences (glamping, anyone?), or something in between, there is a way for everyone to enjoy some time away. Whichever you choose, don’t forget to pack the marshmallows and enjoy some s’mores under the stars!

Raleigh institution, The Mecca, passes the torch
TRAVEL THE WORLD IN THE HEART OF RALEIGH
By Drew Jackson for Triangle Today

The Mecca, an eight-decade time capsule on East Martin Street and the city’s oldest restaurant, has been sold. But its new owner promises the downtown Raleigh landmark will live on unchanged. The Dombalis family, who has operated the restaurant at 13 E. Martin St. for 88 years, announced the sale Tuesday to developer Greg Hatem and his restaurant group Empire Eats, which owns several downtown Raleigh restaurants. “I love The Mecca,” said Hatem, who took over the restaurant Friday. “I think The Mecca is a fantastic restaurant just the way it is. We’re excited about carrying the torch.” Hatem said he plans to keep the name, menu and staff. “A place like The Mecca, you don’t own it, you’re a steward of it, and we’re proud to keep it going,” Hatem said. In a statement, Mecca owner Floye
Dombalis said the sale came down to just needing a break. “The Mecca has weathered the myriad of changes to the downtown landscape and continues to thrive as more and more people choose downtown Raleigh as a destination,” Dombalis said. “But after almost 90 years, the day-to-day responsibilities of running a small business have taken a toll, and my son Paul and I have decided it’s time to retire.” Floye Dombalis, 91, and her late husband, John, were the second generation of Mecca owners, taking over the restaurant from John’s father, Nicholas Dombalis, who founded it in 1930. For the past 16 years, their son Paul Dombalis, 60, ran the restaurant, though Floye remained a fixture at the cash register, greeting diners as they came and went. Floye Dombalis retired from the restaurant late last summer.
