Coloring is a great way for children to build the fine motor skills needed to be able to write in school. If you don’t have a coloring sheet, let your child draw on the back of paper you were planning to throw away. Add a date at the bottom and hang your child’s work of art to admire as well as mark their accomplishments.

ary and her family stop once more for a stretch and a snack. Before leaving Yellowstone National Park, the dog and her traveling companions want to enjoy more of the park’s beauty and uniqueness. The areas around the Madison River on the western side of Yellowstone provide such opportunities. Not only might they see elk, but they may observe and hear some smaller creatures, too. Smaller animals also live in Yellowstone. Some are tiny songbirds, and some are small mammals. They may be found at the picnic areas, pull-outs along the roadways, and in campgrounds. They may be found in meadows and fields, wetlands and waterways, or in trees and rocky areas. However, you might not see them at all because they are small and can hide well. What kind of small creatures might be seen or heard in Yellowstone? Anything from insects to furry animals. Robins, wrens, chipmunks, and tree and ground squirrels are some of the little animals found in the park. Yellowstone is home to 300 species of birds, including tiny songbirds like yellow warblers and mountain chickadees; 11 different amphibians and reptiles (frogs, toads,

snakes, and lizards); and more than 30 different types of small mammals, from rabbits to porcupines. Red squirrels (also known in the west as pine squirrels) chatter from pine trees. Ground squirrels and marmots squeak from rocky areas. Robins hunt for worms and other food on the ground while hummingbirds seek the nectar of wildflowers for their food. As Mary, Cody, and their humans sit at a picnic table near the Madison River, the springer spaniel’s ears hear a sharp SQUEAK! Mary’s eyes look around. Soon, she sees movement among nearby rocks. She watches a ground squirrel sit on a rock and look at her, Cody, and their humans. The tiny rodent again says SQUEAK! Mary
barks. Then Cody barks. Both dogs strain against their leashes, which are tied to the picnic table. Each one barks again. Their people laugh, and everyone watches the furry squirrel dart under one of the larger rocks. Mary and Cody receive a treat from their human friends. After munching the baconflavored snack, the dogs sit near their people. They all watch the blazing orange sun begin to set behind the mountains. The sky turns from bright blue to rosy pink with yellow and orange hues. A coyote yips in the distance. As their people pick up the water and snacks from the picnic table, the woman says, “Time to leave the park, Mary and Cody. We have a cabin reserved for the night, so we need to be on our way.” She unties Mary and Cody from the leg of the picnic table. The man carries the food and water to the car. The woman follows, and the two dogs walk beside her. To be continued
