[TR] Who is Prince B Charles?
a full-fledged emcee?
[PBC] I am a very authentic and regal minded emcee. I am very accomplished and ambitious, and I am the CEO of my own future Gold Mine, my indie recording label ... Imperial Goose Music!
[PBC] I’ve been rapping and free-styling since the age of 12; but I can say I became a full-fledged emcee in high school which was when I around the age of 14. My friends and I would skip class and go to the cafeteria. One of my friends would do drum beats on the lunchroom table while we’d all take turn freestyling for hours. Over time crowds of kids would start gathering around while to get into our Cyphers. Then soon enough other rappers would come and try to test my team and we would always thoroughly represent. I really started to master my freestyle around that time and utilized it in times of battle. Till this day, I can proudly say I am undefeated in rap battles.
[TR] What does hip-hop mean to you? What do you love about hip-hop? [PBC] These two questions coincide with each other so I would answer both with this... HipHop is and has always been the perfect way to communicate my creativity and the culture represents my ideal self, given my upbringing in Brooklyn, NY. Along with the pureness of expression it allows me to deliver, I get a high from it that I cannot explain. So the answer would be in short... It’s my truest expression.
[TR] Where do you find the determi[TR] When did you first become aware nation, will-power and authenticity of hip-hop? to stay relevant? [PBC] One of my earliest Hip Hop related memories is from when I was an early teen. We used to rush home from school every day to record to VCR, Hip Hop music videos that came on Uncle Ralph McDaniel’s “Video Music Box”, and we stayed up super late to watch Bobby Simmons’ “Flava Videos” show.
[PBC] My determination and will-power to do this is innate. I believe this is what I am suppose to be doing, and to stay relative I just keep my senses geared towards what’s going on all over mainstream Hip Hop and international Hip Hop. I also stay up-to-date with current affairs.
[PBC] I knew that I wanted to be a hip hop artist from young because I was always in some type of elite crew that was making major moves. (S/O My DeadEnd Block Fam & Every other rap crew or group I was in). But officially, by the age of 16 when I had my first official recording studio session, I was introduced to a Track Masters affiliate, Kurt Gowdy, I knew then that this was what I wanted to do with my life.
ing and performing music to pursue a career in video/film production back in 2002 - 2007. I chose that path because at the time in the early 2000’s I felt that music was becoming very dry and uninspiring. I took courses in college and worked in the TV station (S/O to LIU-TV). I also have a brother-in-law that was in the industry shooting music videos, films, and commercials. I threw myself in the field and learned the craft paid my dues by

working my way up from Production Assistant to Producer. I met a lot of the industry’s elites and got to work on visual productions w/ Fantasia (“Free Yourself” music video), Jermaine Dupri (Documentary and tour footage of his artists Dem Franchise Boys and Da Brat), Rapper Maino, DJ Scratch, legendary Kango Crew member Dana Dane, Big Daddy Kane, Uncle Murda, and the list goes on.
Kool! You betta tell us some funny/ tasty/nasty story about the industry! [PBC] The craziest story I have from my vid/film production days was when I was shooting behind the scenes footage of Dem Franchize boys at BET with my brother-in-law. I was asked by their manager to stop shooting and put on the So So Def mascott costume and join the guys on stage with Da Brat while they performed the “They Like Me” remix. I got on that stage w/ that costume on and started doing the snap dance! They all loved it and the crowd loved it.

You seem to have a unique connection with Brooklyn and its community. What is unique about Brooklyn? How does this connection is reflected in your rhymes? Brooklyn to me is like the Mecca of Stardom. I mean in a sense of Brooklyn birthed so many of the “World’s Greatest”, so it seems like if you are a talented individual and you are from Brooklyn, you could be destined for Mega Stardom. People from Brooklyn have a certain type of moxie in the way we carry ourselves. The era I came up in, was literally like “Do or Die!” in Brooklyn, just like the late great Notorious said. It was like a concrete jungle and only the strongest survived. There were robberies, murders, crooked cops, block wars, etc. every day. It seemed like if you were to survived all of that, it meant you were born to win, not only on a local, or domestic level, but on an international, world-wide level! That’s where I believe that Regal Essence stems from. The fact that you overcame
those many obstacles meant you were ready and fit for a crown. Plus, Let’s not forget Brooklyn is also known as “KINGS COUNTY”! (California also has a Kings County but we know who had the name 1st! Lol) In my music you will hear these things. It illustrates my points-of-view and stories about my come-up in Brooklyn and the mentality I’ve gained from my experiences. It is a mindset that is directed toward staying Regal and Extravagant, gaining Wisdom & remaining Confident, and expressing oneself through art, primarily through lyrics and music, in a true and authentic New York fashion.
What is your opinion on foreign hiphop? I mean, Outside-Brooklyn-HipHop LOL ... And what is your opinion on the international hiphop scene? (I mean, Outside- US-Hip-Hop :) In my “HipHop Studies” I definitely have taken the time to check out other cultures and countries that have took to Hip Hop. I can see why there is an attraction
and that there are more raw and underground rap artists. Seems like when a new region explodes with Hip Hop culture it always finds a way to generally root itself in urban areas where more lower class and lower income people are, and where there is a struggle. I’ve heard artists from Germany, France, Somalia, Brazil, Puerto Rico and they all came across real raw in their presentation. At first when I listened to International Hip Hop they all for the most part seemed real hardcore, but I’ve noticed that once the Hip Hop became recognized as a mainstream American genre, and artists being internationally known became the mainstream norm. This is when I started hearing more pop-like international artists. So I guess I can say they also followed the trend which is part of the natural evolution of Hip Hop so far. There are some phenomenal international artists I like listening to: MIA, Tego Calderon, K’naan, Booba, Bushido & my Dude P-Noise from Montreal QC.

features of a modernday classic Hip-hop album? In other words tell us about your forthcoming album “I’m It: Goose Season Vol.1” (GSV1)
Thank you for your reference to my latest album “I’M IT”: GOOSE SEASON VOL.1 (GSVOL1: I’M IT) concerning modern day [TR] What are the main classics!
To me a classic album is an album that can literally possess you and take you on a journey through song to places that other less substantial artists cannot. A classic album possesses: character, innovative ideas, amusing stories and the ability to deeply connect you to it whenever you listen to it. These are all qualities my latest album has, (which can be
tr 21
purchased via iTunes, Amazon and CD Baby and other major retailers right now!) that is why it is referred to as a “Modern Day Classic” album.
[TR] Do you think hiphop can be an agent for social change? In other words, what do you think about socially and politically conscious hiphop? (e.g. Public Enemy) [PBC] I believe Hip Hop has always been used for social change. The architects like Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, KRS-One, Public Enemy, NWA, and even Biggie Smalls and Diddy dealt with social issues and the things that affected our communities. They told us about ideals that we as a people in a struggle should hold on to in order to rise out of our conditions. They even provided us with real life depictions of what it is to be young, black and successful in America. Because of how these notions were handled by these artists, I can proudly say the crime rates and murder rates in particular in my birthplace have gone down. Since
tr 22
their True-Skool reigns, there are many more successful black people in America not looking for work, but hiring people to assist them in building their own small enterprises. At its core, Hip Hop is the post-civil rights movement voice of the new black America, and it has taken the world by storm. And because of that voice, we now have an even more prominent position in the new globalized world, and so does other people from disadvantaged communities all over. Now that’s social change for that ass! Lol
[TR] Nas said that hiphop is dead. Comment this provocative statement...
[PBC] I believe the Internet has become a good filter for all the “extra bs” you get from the regular mainstream media. Artists not fortunate enough to get a “deal” can gain access to fans globally and make their own moves. This is the essence of the Independent Artist and the new and revamped music industry. Once you’ve hit your peak you’ll gain the option of possibly becoming a “Mainstream Commodity”. The internet just gives us the “choice” now to play the game our own way and on our own terms. I Choose To Play It ReGal.
[PBC] Nas was right when he said Hip Hop is dead. As it once was, it has died, but it is resurrected through me and all other new artists like myself that thrive off of innovation, inspiration [TR] Thank You for Your and dedication and the Time, Prince B Charles... true spirit of Hip Hop, which Good Luck and Always is by the way likely the first international CULTURE, which has been spread so far from its roots in the hood to the cultured in the palaces and museums.
Keep It Re[g]al!
[TR] Do you think the Internet is providing new opportunities or is it hurting the game?

OF VANUATU AN INTERVIEW WITH PHOTOGRAPHER GRAHAM CRUMB: <<I’VE LEARNED THAT SIMPLICITY IS THE GREATEST GOAL. THAT’S WHY MOST OF MY SHOTS ARE CRUDELY SIMPLE, STRAIGHT-ON CLOSEUPS OF A SINGLE INDIVIDUAL WITH NOTHING BUT A GLINT IN THE EYE OR THE HINT OF A SMILE AS THE MESSAGE. [tr] You know, I was fascinated by the genuine vibes of your portraits. Please, tell us more about your Humans of Vanuatu (HOV) project... [gc] The project itself is the brainchild of Facebook user Fleur DeLys, a Ni Vanuatu woman currently based in Fiji. The first I heard of it was when I received a notification saying that I’d been made admin for the page. My first reaction was: WTF is Humans of Vanuatu? At the time, the page had nothing on it but a cryptic reference to Brandon Stanton’s Humans of New York. I didn’t know anything about his work, but a quick visit to his site and the HoNY Facebook page really resonated with what I’ve been doing since I arrived in Vanuatu in 2003. I’m not crazy about the lazier, more voyeuristic aspects of what’s become known as Street Photography, but what Stanton does is unique and engaging. It goes straight to the heart of what makes photography interesting for me - those moments of interaction between strangers, and the (often unspoken) agreement of the subjects to expose some integral part of themselves, to share something essential about themselves with the world at large. [tr] You said the HOV project “brings you closer to the human lives of Vanuatu”, can you elaborate more on the subject? [gc] I’m Canadian. I first came to Vanuatu as a volunteer back in 2003. I

never left. To do so now would break my heart. As with most of the world, my first reaction to being told about Vanuatu was, ‘Vanuatu? Where is that? Africa?’ I did a little searching online, but the amount of information of any value was tiny. My day job is in IT, so bringing the people of Vanuatu online is an abiding concern. And the key to that is to share those unique aspects of Vanuatu society and lifestyle that make it such a beautiful, peaceful place. There are tons of problems and challenges, and many people live in poverty, but life here is rich and mostly rewarding. And that’s most of what I want the rest of the world to see. HoV is a tiny thing still, and honestly, I can’t see it ever growing beyond a drop in the torrent of beautiful images on the web today. Just try following the ‘Fresh’ stream on 500px.com. It’ll overwhelm you. HoV is quiet and unassuming, just like the people it portrays, and though it might not ever matter much to those outside the Pacific, we don’t really care. It’s Us, and we love it. [tr] Please, tell us more about Vanuatu... [gc] Wow. How to bundle up 3000 years of living culture into a paragaph or two? Vanuatu is one of the few places remaining in the world where true community still exists. It’s small enough that people still know each other, and big enough to embrace really wide cultural diversity.

There are over 100 languages spoken here in addition to French, English and Bislama, the local pidgin. Life on a small island requires that you accommodate people and behaviour that you wouldn’t necessarily choose if you lived in a big

existence, is that Vanuatu culture is mostly polite, respectful and full of stress-relieving laughter. The key to living in Vanuatu is understanding the difference between Peace and Justice. Peace requires that everyone get along. Justice, on the

chief: One for causing the problem in the first place, and the other for turning the situation into a fight that requires his intervention. Take a look at the photo I took of Chief Roy Yasur on the HoV page. He explains the issue really well. And when you’re done reading his explanation for how Kastom works, take another look at that smile of his. He’s a very, very canny, subtle-minded man who understands his people remarkably well. He manages their affairs with deftness, cunning and tact but then, that’s the hallmark of a good chief in Vanuatu. [tr] How do you choose the subject of your portraits? [gc] They choose me, for the most part. There are a few portraits on the page that were posed, but they’re a really tiny minority. My standard procedure is simply to choose a neighbourhood I haven’t visited in a while, and to wander around. People spot me way before I spot them (it’s still pretty unusual to see a white guy with an expensive camera in Port Vila’s residential neighbourhoods, let alone in the villages). They’re always curious and sometimes a trifle
suspicious, but I speak Bislama pretty well and know a few words in about a dozen other island languages, so I just explain what I’m up to and where I’m going. (This is de rigeur in Vanuatu. Here, ‘where are you going?’ is how people say ‘hi’ when they meet.) Most people are really eager to have their photo taken. Quite often I have to take a few token shots that I have no intention of using, just to placate the demand and to get them to relax a little. [tr] What is happening around you, while you are taking pictures? How do people react and behave? Wow, that varies as much as the subjects themselves. My goal is ultimately to capture as many aspects of day to day life in Vanuatu as possible, so I guess I could say, everything is happening around me, all the time. I never leave the house without my camera, lenses, a full battery and an empty memory card. And I’ll pull out the camera at the drop of a hat. Most of the time, there’s a ton of laughter and enjoyment. People outside the frame often make cheeky comments to the subject, just to

at first, but it’s not at all unusual to meet someone for the first time in months, only to have them ask you about something you did just yesterday. Once you get used to living in the middle of a very curious - and surprisingly well-informed - community, you realise that it’s really quite liberating to share your life with everyone else. So even when I’m walking down a road I’ve never traveled before, there are still likely people who will know who I am. [tr] From your pictures I see you meet inspiring people. Tell us some anecdotes... [gc] I think the biggest gift I can share with people is reminding them that they matter. It’s easy to feel forgotten by the world when you live in a tiny speck in the ocean. But when I show people the numbers who’ve been exposed to my website and to HoV, they’re genuinely gratified. There’s an immense well of dignity and pride in Vanuatu culture, and this is just one tiny moment of affirmation for it. But in Vanuatu, the little things matter.
hired a driver for the day to take me around the Lenakel area of Tanna island to do some research. We picked up Chief Ieru as he was walking from a kastom ceremony in Lenakel, back to his village about 8km away. We dropped him where the road led into the bush. Before he left, he sang one of his famous songs, an almost jazzlike improvisation thatmade sly observations about every neighbourhood in Port Vila, ending with my own Freswota. Judging by the glint in his eye, I think he knew where I lived, though for the life of me, I don’t know how. Chief Ieru is known throughout the island for his wisdom and his wit. He teaches young people kastomdancing now, keeping the fascinating Tannese culture alive.
[tr] Where can we experience your portraits?
[gc]Everything - the good, the bad and the ugly - goes up on my website:
http://imagicity.com/
I recently registered humansofvanuatu.com, and hope to have a website in place soon. If and when that happens, we’ll see Chief Ieru from more input from other great VanTanna was one of the most re- uatu photographers.. markable people I’ve ever met. He’s also the very first portrait I posted to HoV. I’d been shortlisted to write for Lonely Planet, so I’d

[tr] Future plans? [gc] Well, the HoV website is the first thing. The domain is registered, but this is a labour of love, so I can only move things along in my less-thancopious spare time. I want to publish work by a few other long-time photogs working in and around Vanuatu. There’s just so much more to see! After that: Humans of Melanesia. I want to expand the scope to include Fiji, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia and West Papua. There’s just so much great photography happening in this truly unique region. If you want a taste of it, check out my mate Ben Bohane’s remarkable photojournalism at wakaphotos.com. (Every time someone compliments my photography, I tell them, ‘No, I’m not a photographer - THAT’S a photographer!’)
Stones and Clash for their anger and energy and their willingness to offend. Desmond Decker and Jimmy Cliff for their songs of liberation and joy. [tr] Your Favorite Photographers? Capa (natch) and Don McKellen probably affected me the most. My mate Ben Bohane. [tr] Photographers Names to Watch? Watch out for more great shooters once the HoV website gets going, and even more when we embark onHumans of Melanesia. [tr] Favorite Festivals/Events?
These days? Nothing comes close to Vanuatu’s own Fest Napuan. It’s raw, sometimes downright unprofessional, but it’s one of the greatest expressions of Pacific culture you’ll ever find: from the high-polish of our international acts to the Monkey Boys, a gang from the Banks islands [tr]Forthcoming exhibition(s)? [gc] Exhibitions? Nyet. Nothing who do hilarious, uproariously raunplanned right now. Humans of Van- chy sketch humour. uatu is completely online and free. [tr] Preferred Food? Everyone who knows me at all knows [tr] Favorite artists? Hemingway and (all of) Graham they can always find me down at Greene, Marquez, Shakespeare and Port Vila’s Cafe au Peche Mignon. It’s a great little french patisserie, countless others. with fine coffee, great desserts and [tr] Musical Heroes? a clientele that cuts across all social Elvis Costello for his love of the boundaries. bon mot and the particularities of [tr] Preferred Drink? life. Bowie for his art. And the great voices of jazz (Holiday, Fitzger- Kava. It’s a Vanuatu institution. Conald, Vaughan, Cassandra Wilson) cocted from the roots of a local bush, for their sheer lyrical beauty. Early Try it some time!
