WEEKLY HONORS PLAYER OF THE WEEK AARON ESTRADA | Hofstra
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK JYARE DAVIS | Delaware
Estrada wins his league-leading fifth honor of the year and second-consecutive selection after three more stellar performances in Hofstra wins. The guard from New Jersey averaged 25.3 points per game on 55% from the field and 60% (12-of-20) from three while adding 6.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. Estrada scored 23 points in a two-point win over first-place UNCW, poured in 32 in a win at Drexel, and scored 21 in a victory at Drexel. He has scored 20 or more points in 11 of 13 CAA games.
Davis collects his third-straight Rookie of the Week honor with 14.0 points per game on 63% shooting while grabbing 4.0 rebounds per game. The forward from Newark scored 12 points on 6-of-9 from the field while adding five rebounds, two assists, and two blocks in Thursday’s victory over Northeastern before tallying 16 points in Saturday’s clash with Hofstra. NEWS AND NOTES
ALL FOUR FOR ONE Four teams remain in contention for the CAA regular-season title. A win by Towson (11-3) over UNCW (12-3) on Thursday night pulled the Tigers within a half-game of first, while bringing idle Hofstra (10-4) within 1.5 games of the top spot. Delaware’s victory moved the Blue Hens to 9-5. The only remaining games between the top four involve Delaware, which hosts UNCW next Saturday before completing a suspended game at Towson on February 28. The Blue Hens lead the Tigers, 38-29, with 18:42 to go. OH MY, OMAR! Hofstra’s Omar Silverio provided a record-setting performance in the Pride’s road victory Tuesday, scoring 40 points and breaking the CAA single-game record with 11 made threes. Silverio went 11-of-16 from distance on his way to breaking the program and conference marks. Four players in CAA history made 10 threes in a game prior Tuesday. Silverio’s 40-point performance was the highest total by a CAA player since former Hofstra teammate Desure Buie scored 44 against Elon on Jan. 4, 2020. LUCKY NUMBER NINE? UNCW leads the CAA at 12-3 after opening conference play with nine straight victories. The Seahawks were picked ninth in the CAA preseason poll - the same spot occupied the previous October by 2021 regular season champion James Madison. YEAR OF THE TIGER? Towson has risen 224 spots in KenPom from the end of last year, climbing from 298 to 74 as of Friday. The last CAA team to finish the year higher was UNCW at No. 59 in 2016-17. Towson was as high as No. 62 in the NET this season (a CAA record) and leads the state of Maryland in the NCAA’s metric. Towson’s 20 wins this season lead the CAA and the 20-7 start is the Tigers’ best through 27 games in the program’s Division I history.
