TRIBE NEWS & NOTES - William & Mary opened the 102nd season in school history Thursday night against Coppin State. It was the first meeting between the two teams. Over the years, the Tribe has amassed 696 wins, 116 under head coach Ed Swanson. - William and Mary opened the season against Coppin State. First game since January 24, 2021. The Tribe fell to Coppin State 73-56 in its first game of the season

Wagner currently ranks sixth in school history averaging 12.7 points per game and is 290 points from joining the 1,000 club. Senior Sydney Wagner led all playes in the NCAA last season with 3.92 - William & Mary shot 44% (20-45) from the field and 30% (6-of-15) from the three but were outscored 34-10 in the paint. three point baskets per game. The Tribe continued to excel in the classroom achieving a team GPA of 3.63 for the fall semester. In total, nine student-athletes had semester GPA of 3.5 or better, including four with a 4.0.

William & Mary will need to replace three starters from the 2020-21 season. Bailey Eichner, Nyla Pollard, and Gabby Rogers have all moved on from Williamsburg after logging a lot of minutes for coach Swanson’s team.
- William & Mary ranked second in the CAA in scoring defense (61.3 ppg), while leading the conference in three-point field goal percentage defense (23.1%).

A pair of graduate transfer students join the Tribe for the 2021-22 season. Riley Casey comes to the Green and Gold from Columbia while Kate Sramac comes to Williamsburg after three years of play at Cornell.
- W&M head coach Ed Swanson enjoyed a noteworthy 2019-20 season individually. He was named the CAA Co-Coach of the Year following the Tribe’s historic season. Swanson won his 500th career game on Nov. 26, became just the third coach in W&M history to win 100 games with the Tribe on Jan. 12, and was inducted into the Northeast Conference Hall of Fame in January.
- Last season, a fast start was pivotal to success for the Tribe. Coach Swanson’s team was 6-1 in games in which they led at halftime. Conversely, the team was winless in games in which they trailed at the break.
- Assistant Coach Kenia Cole is the newest member of the Tribe. Cole comes to the Tribe after spending the last two years as an assistant at Hampton University. Cole has four years of experience on the bench, beginning with Oberlin College in the 2017-18 season when she helped the team take home their first ever North Coast Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship. - As a team, the Tribe was picked eighth in the preseason standings by vote of the league coaches. Last season, W&M was picked eighth in the preseason before opting due to COVID for the remainder of the 2020-21 season on Feb. 12 after completing 13 games (6-7, 3-5 CAA).
- The Tribe posted the best season in school history in 2019-20 with program records in wins (21), CAA wins (12) and road wins (11). With a final RPI of 104, W&M was on the verge of earning a postseason berth to, at least, the WNIT for the first time in the program’s history before COVID-19 ended the season.

Coppin State outscored the Tribe, 22-10, in the third quarter to break the game open and used a 34-10 advantage in the paint to pick up the win. Bre Bellamy led W&M with 11 points. This will be the Tribe’s first meeting with Randolph College. Last season, Sydney Wagner scored 23 points to lead the Tribe to a win over Navy. W&M used a 15-2 run in the first half to gain control and never trailed. It was the Tribe’s first win in three meetings with Navy. The Tribe meets Mason for the second-straigth year. Mason leads the all-time series, 50-24, but W&M won in Fairfax, 48-43, last season behind Sydeny Wagner’s 27 points on six 3-pointers. W&M defeated UMES last season in the only meeting between the programs, 78-50. Sydney Wagner and Bre Bellamy each had 11 points in the win. The Tribe holds an 11-10 advantage in the all-time series with the Tribe Pirates. The teams have not played since 2009. The Green and Gold holds an 8-2 advantage in Williamsburg. The Cavaliers lead the all-time series at 11-1. Teams have not met since 1999. The Tribe’s lone win in the series came in 1973. The Tribe and the Monarchs meet for the 96th time in series history. ODU leads the all-time series 73-22, but W&M has won three of the last six meetings. W&M and Hampton meet for the second time in 2021, this time in Hampton. HU has won the last two meetings, including a 71-66 game in 2009. The oldest rivalry in school history, Richmond and W&M play for the 114th time. Richmond leads the all-time series at 84-28-1, however, the Tribe has won three of the last five meetings. W&M and Norfolk State meet for the seventh-straight season. Since 1998, the Tribe is 16-2 against the Spartans, including a 55-44 win in Norfolk last season. The two teams did not play last season due the Covid shortened season. W&M has won four straight against Elon. The Dukes have won the last six meetings between the two teams. The Green and Gold last knocked off the Dukes, 62-53, on the road in 2017. The teams did not meet last season. W&M has won the last two meetings both on the road and away between the two teams. The programs did not meet last season. In the 2019-20 season the teams split a pair of matchups. The Tribe won 63-55 finishing the game shooting 48.9% (22-of-45) from the field at Wilmington. W&M is 4-3 against Charleston at home. The teams split a pair of matchups last season. Last season the Tribe was 1-1 against Hofstra. W&M had season highs against the Pride in points (63), field goal percentage (42.6), and free throw attempts (18). W&M won its last meet-up with the Huskies 80-64. Northeastern leads the series 13-12. Last January agianst Delaware, Sydney Wagner dropped a career-high 31 points, the 11th-most by any Tribe player in the modern era (1975-present). She made 7 threes and was 6-6 from the free-throw line. The Tribe split a pair with the CAA Champs last season, winning 69-53 in Kaplan Arena last January. Bre Bellamy had a career-high 19 points in the game. W&M leads the series 21-14 against Towson and 8-7 at home. JMU leads the all-time series 74-17. W&M last won against the Dukes in 2017 in Harrisonburg. Since CofC joined the CAA, W&M holds a 10-7 advantage in the all-time series, including a 5-4 mark at Charleston. W&M holds a 37-35 advantage in the all-time series with UNCW, but the Seahawks own a 21-14 mark against the Tribe in Wilmington. Northeastern holds a slim 13-12 advantage in the all-time series, but the Tribe leads the series, 9-3, in Williamsburg. Last season, Sydney Wagner scored 19 as the Tribe opened CAA play win over Hofstra Drexel leads the all-time series with W&M at 29-16, inlcuding a 13-8 margin in Philadelphia. Last year Chaniqwa Gilliam set a new career-high with 12 points in the game. Rebekah FrisbySmith (10) and Sydney Wagner (11) were also in double digits. W&M have won the last four meetings against Elon. Elon leads the overall series at 10-8. The Tribe did not compete in the CAA Championships last season and the 2020 event was canceled due to COVID. In two of its three previous trips to the CAA Championship, the Tribe won its first game.
