The Boone County Fair Ready for Another Year in Sturgeon
2016 Boone County Fair parade in Sturgeon. Tribune/Daniel Brenner
Ligers will make an appearance at the fair for the irst time in 15 years By Allie Berger Columbia Tribune The verdict is in: The Boone County Fair’s move to Sturgeon from Columbia in 2016 was a success. This year the fair will return to Sturgeon, and predicted members of the fair board, it will be just as successful and 2017 will also bring many improvements. Some of those improvements include more accessible parking, an improved demolition derby track, and hired entertainment such as live music from Halle Kearns the evening of Friday, July 21, and a lineup of some local Bluegrass bands on Saturday, July 22. Jef Cook, president of the fair board, said the change in scenery and the smaller location actually served in the fair’s favor, but emphasized it has really been the camaraderie of the citizens of 2
Sturgeon and the hard work of the Columbia Fair Board veterans that has him in hopes of an even better turnout this year. “If it wasn’t for the community we wouldn’t be able to have made the improvements we have,” he said. That community involvement has included the physical labor of the Sturgeon Fair Board in relation to the demolition derby track, a local Sturgeon citizen leasing his pasture for parking, Columbia Ready Mix’s concrete donation, and Merten’s Quary git of 2,400 tons of gravel. But along with all the improvements the move to Sturgeon has brought the fair, surprisingly it has also created some nostalgia. Cook said for him the move to Sturgeon provided fond memories of an “old country fair.” “It felt like a country fair should feel like,” he said. This year will be Cook’s fourth as the president, but it is his ifteenth year serving on the board. When he speaks about the fair, he emphasizes its importance to the county’s roots. The irst fair took place in 1835, only 15 years ater Columbia and Boone County were established. According to Cook,
2017 BOONE COUNTY FAIR GUIDE
back then the fair was important to everyone. As one example, it allowed residents to promote their top-quality livestock. “It was a place where people could showcase their talents” Cook explained. In a time before the internet and the popular media, the fair was a place where people could come together, exhibit their trades and skills, and share in the enjoyment that the fair’s sense of community had to ofer. Although the fair has changed (most signiicantly last year with the move) and will continue to adapt with modern times, for Cook continuing the tradition and staying true to the “roots of our county” for the sake of younger generations is important. “It’s what keeps me going — providing the fair for younger generations to see what it’s all about” he said. “That’s what is so important — to keep that (tradition) alive and to bring the younger generations up in that.” Keeping in the tune of tradition, this year the fair is bringing back its old carnival, the Sunshine Carnival. Cook explained that the move caused conlictions with the Saturday, July 15, 2017
carnival last year, but this year the crowd favorite is back. “People praise them for how nice they are” he said. Another group of entertainers, Woody’s Menagerie, an educational wildlife presentation, will be back ater 15 years with their ligers. A liger is a hybrid species produced from a male lion and female tiger (not to be confused with a tigon). The Last time Woody’s Menagerie was at the fair the ligers were just cubs, and Cook said he’s excitement to see these “1,500-pound cats.” Granpa Cratchet, another fair entertainment staple, will be around in his “trash truck” entertaining the crowds. He will also perform a puppet show for kids Wednesday, July 19. This year’s fair is deinitely a merge of the old with the new, a culmination of tradition and innovation, and a perfect example of the magic that can happen when people work together. The fair begins Saturday, July 15 and runs until Sunday, July 23. For a full list of events and schedules visit theboonecountyfair.com.

The woman behind the crown Pageant director Courtney Chandler ready for another year of royal service By Allie Berger Columbia Tribune During the annual Boone County Fair we admire the queens, teen queens and princess as they grace the stage in their evening wear and party dresses, and impress crowds with their talents. But just as impressive as the young girls and women who compete for the crown is the woman who organizes it all, Courtney Chandler. Chandler has been the Boone County Fair’s pageant director since 2014, when her father, who is on the fair board, told Chandler the fair was in need of a new pageant director. Although the position is a serious task – such as choreography for the opening number, writing scripts, selecting trophies and working with contestants – Chandler was eager to assume the role. Although Chandler, a past pageant competitor herself, spends an abundance of time organizing the pageant’s logistics, she says it’s the time spent with the contestants that makes the job the most rewarding. A week prior to the pageant consists of meetings and dress rehearsals, where she gets to know the girls who will be competing that year. “By the end,” she said, “I form a pretty close relationship with them.” The pageant takes place 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 18 at the Sturgeon columbiatribune.com
Fair Grounds, and consists of several events: opening number, evening gown wear (queens and the teen queens), on-stage questions, and this year’s new addition, the teen queen talent portion. Chandler said her close relationship with contestants makes her proud when she later watches them walk, dance, sing, and speak on that stage. “Getting to know the girls and seeing them blossom and look so comfortable on stage—it’s awesome,” Chandler said. According to Chandler, the fair’s move to Sturgeon has had only positive efects on the pageant. She said several contestants from Sturgeon who had never competed in a pageant before decided to give it a try since it was taking place on their home grounds. Chandler predicted that these positive efects will continue on, and she hopes to see more girls give the pageant a try in the future. What’s a fair without the food? By Allie Berger Columbia Tribune A day spent meandering around fair grounds is never complete without the food. As always, the Boone County Fair will serve their own concessions, operated by fair board members. One can expect just what they should when attending a fair: hamburgers, hot dogs, soda, curly fries, funnel cakes — a complete amalgamation of fair lavors. A fair staple, Sunshine Amusements Carnival Food, is back this year ater a lapse in tradition in 2016 due to some conlictions with the move. Like The Boone County concessions, they will also ofer favorite fair foods. A newer addition to the food selection is Steinman’s food truck from Mexico, Missouri. In addition to your standard hamburger, Stein-
man’s ofers hand-breaded catish sandwiches, pulled pork, breaded chicken wings, fried pickles and their crowd-favorite loaded nachos. This will be Steinman’s fourth year attending the Boone Count Fair and they are excited to be back this year, with hopes of grilling up some baby back ribs. The fair falls right in the middle of the summer, so Kona Ice COMO will have their truck parked on the grounds so fair goers can cool of and wrap up their day with a snow cone, a summer classic. And, to top it all of, the fair will have its annual ham breakfast, a tradition for about 75 years, said fair board president Jef Cook. The breakfast will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 22. Tickets are $20 and the fair board encourages those interested to reserve tickets in advance.
