FROM COLUMBIA TRIBUNE STAFF Thursday night, the first Columbia Daily Tribune Best of Prep Sports Awards gold carpet event was held at the Missouri Theatre. Athletes and coaches from 12 high schools in Boone County came together and were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments in sport. Over 450 attended the event to see the awards ceremony and hear from former MIZZOU player Jeremy Maclin. Former Missouri wide receiver Jeremy Maclin was the keynote speaker and spent 30 minutes on stage being interviewed by sports reporters Cameron Teague Robinson and Blake Toppmeyer. Maclin touched on his favorite memories at Missouri, in the NFL, and also gave some advice to the high school athletes in attendance. “To have Jeremy Maclin there speaking to the athletes was a crucial part of the event,” Teague Robinson said. “The night
was all about the athletes, but for the focus to be on Maclin in that moment and have him talk about the experiences that helped him become so successful, it is something the kids will never forget.” “It was an electric night” Deborah Marshall, Director of Advertising for the Columbia Daily Tribune said of the event. “It truly was a night to remember”. The event would not have been possible without the support of University of Missouri Health Care, Columbia Public Schools Athletic Department, Shelter Insurance; Nancy Allison, Mike Messer, Mitch Theede, Ed Hohlt, Show Me State Games, Veterans United, Moberly Area Community College and Central Bank of Boone County. The Best of Prep nominee selections are based on many things including statistics, postseason and state honors, the direct observations of our Tribune reporters as well as the opinion of many area coaches. There are 12 schools included in the standings. Best of Prep Tribbys Awards ice sculpture. Tribune/Timothy Tai

Missouri Teen First to Benefit From Mizzou BioJoint℠. In 2013, a high school football injury changed Jonathan Williams' outlook on life. The injury not only kept him from playing sports, but also prevented him from enjoying simple activities such as running and hiking. The traditional repair for this type of severe injury to knee cartilage involves replacing the joint using metal and plastic components. Although this procedure can resolve pain and ofer a return to low-impact activities, an artiicial joint has limitations, especially in young patients. However, a team of researchers and orthopaedic surgeons at the University of Missouri has developed a new tissue-graft preservation method to ofer patients like Williams a better, more natural repair. Williams is the irst patient to receive a graft preserved with this system. Today, a year and a half after Williams underwent surgery, he is working part-time at the Mizzou BioJoint℠ Center. One of his main roles is to give new patients a irst-hand description of the procedure from start to inish. He’s also pain-free and training to run a 5k.
For more information about Mizzou BioJoint℠, visit MIZZOUBIOJOINT.COM.
I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life not being active. I wanted to do things like jog, hike and surf. I missed doing those things. I really did take it for granted, and now I’m able to get back to doing them. It’s pretty exciting to be a part of this, but knowing I was the irst to get one of these grafts, well, honestly, I think that’s very cool.

Brock KHRISTEN Mauller BRYANT 2017 MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
2017 FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
WHY HE WON...
WHY SHE WON...
Brock had a dominant year, which included winning his third straight state wrestling championship. He finished the season 46-0 and at the state tournament defeated two of his four opponents by fall, another by 15-6 major decision and his state championship opponent by tech fall.
Bryant was absolutely dominant at the Class 1 track meet. She finished second in the long jump and 100 dash, while also finishing first in the 100 hurdles and winning her third pole vault championship. More impressively, Bryant set a new all-class record in the pole vault with a jump of 13 feet and scored 36 points, enough to push CIS into fourth-place as a team.
