Best of Prep Tribby Sports Awards

A LETTER TO THE READERS

Thank you

BattleSpartans.org HickmanKewpies.org RockBridgeBruins.org

FROM COLUMBIA TRIBUNE STAFF The second Columbia Daily Tribune Best of Prep Sports Awards gold carpet event was held at the Missouri Theatre on Thursday night. Athletes and coaches from 12 high schools in Boone County came together and were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments in sports. Over 450 attended the event to see the awards ceremony and hear from former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith, who will play for the Washington Redskins this season. Smith was the keynote speaker and spent 30 minutes on stage being interviewed by Sports Reporter Cameron Teague Robinson and Sports Editor Garrick Hodge. Smith touched on his favorite memories playing in the NFL, and also gave some advice to the high school athletes in attendance. “This is one of my favorite events all year.” Deborah Marshall said, Director of Advertising at the Columbia Daily Tribune. “It is always exciting to be part of an event that not only recognizes the great talent in our community but also

recognizes the amazing sportsmanship and heart in our athletes.” Added Robinson: “For the second year in a row the Tribbys were a hit. Alex Smith’s speech stands out to me as the best part of it. Smith answered each of our questions in a way that every athlete in attendance was able to relate to. The awards are awesome. Honoring all of the athletes is awesome. But when a professional athlete can also give them advice that nobody else can, it’s an added bonus and makes the ceremony that much more fun for everybody involved.” The event would not have been possible without the support of University of Missouri Health Care, Columbia Public Schools Athletic Department and Show-Me State Games. The Best of Prep nominee selections are based on many things including statistics, postseason and state honors, the direct observations of our Tribune reporters as well as the opinion of many area coaches. There are 12 schools included in the standings.

to all of our partners who have given generously in providing additional funding for Activities and Athletics for our CPS Students.

Pitching well requires control, but there is no substitute for speed. Turning up the heat — safely — is the goal of the Throwing Velocity Program at MU Health Care’s Human Performance Institute. The Throwing Velocity Program is for male and female athletes of all ages and skill levels who want to throw harder. Classes meet two to three times a week for 90 minutes each. The irst half of those workouts, led by HPI assistant trainer Dylan Newcomer, is devoted to throwing-speciic exercises, including extensive arm-care training to maintain a healthy shoulder, as well as hurling weighted balls to develop arm strength and proper mechanics. The second half of the workouts, led by HPI head trainer Garrett Buschjost, focuses on general physical preparation. “Strength and conditioning and injury prevention are equally important,” said Aaron Gray, MD, the HPI medical director. “If we have a healthy athlete who is weak and slow or can’t throw hard, that’s not good for a team or a coach. If they’re really fast and strong, but they’re injured and broken down, that’s not good either. “One of the exciting things about HPI is we’re able to work on athlete performance and injury prevention in tandem. We can see how the pitchers’ strength and throwing velocity improves, and we can also track and make sure they are staying healthy.”

To learn more about HPI’s Throwing Velocity Program, contact Garrett Buschjost at BuschjostG@health.missouri.edu.
