Welcome to the 54th Annual Home & Lifestyle Expo On behalf of the Columbia Home builders Association, I would like to welcome you and let you know about this year’s exciting events. This year marks the 54th annual Home and Lifestyle Expo. This event has become a tradition in the Columbia area in the spring when many folks are looking to the nice weather and thinking about upgrades to their homes and yards. We had great success last year when we moved the event to the Central Missouri Event Center — Home of the Boone County Fair. We are in the same location this year and are looking forward to even greater attendance. Admission is free to the public again this year so an easy way to enjoy the weekend without spending much money. Things have grown quite a bit this year as we are including a kid’s zone with games and prizes, a hot air balloon contest and balloon glow, and a Beer Garden. There will be multiple daily door prizes with lots of fun and exciting things to see and do. If you have an idea for an upgrade to your current home or thinking about a brand new home, the Expo is the place to get ideas and information. Additionally this year, we invite you to attend the HBA Spring Parade of Homes. This event will be held the prior weekend to the Expo, on April 5 and 6, from 1 to 5 p.m. This will allow plenty of time to tour a selected group of brand new homes along with remodeling projects produced by Columbia’s finest home builders. Travel around and tour the homes, talk to the builders and get ideas. The following weekend you can follow up with the Home and Lifestyle Expo, where you can see more cool new concepts and ideas and have fun at the same time. Two full weekends of home and lifestyle ideas! We invite you to come out to both events. Learn…enjoy… and have fun!

Simple DIY home decorating trends (BPT) Whether you are personalizing a new home or revitalizing an old room, here are four easy and affordable DIY tips to bring 2014’s trends into your home. Don’t just spring clean, spring create. Spring cleaning doesn’t have to mean getting rid of everything in the garage. Familiar pieces showcased in a special way can be a conversation starter. Love cycling, but have an old bicycle that you don’t ride anymore? Consider using its components to construct a unique piece of furniture to showcase your passion for the sport. Go ahead, mix materials. Vintage and contemporary design elements come together to create rustic contemporary looks. “Reclaimed materials will heavily influence DIYers, and contrasting shiny and rustic materials in projects will definitely be trending in 2014,” says KariAnne Wood, designer, blogger

and owner of Thistlewood Farms. Metal, wood, glass, ceramic – all of these key materials play essential roles in making your home the center of attention. Mixing two, or even all, of these will give you an edge in creating a unique space. Consider gluing pieces of metal and wood together to construct an industrial-style coffee table. Give piece(s) a chance. Recycled wooden pallets and cable spools are trending now on Pinterest, as DIYers turn them into coffee tables, desks and wall art.

“Homeowners are finding ways to bring an element of surprise to staple pieces. Taking utilitarian items and helping them live a new, more beautiful life will enhance any space this season,” Wood says. Organize organically. Most people kick spring off with a little time devoted to organizing. There are easy ways to make your current space functional without sacrificing your design preferences. Don’t let closet space get cluttered. Instead, make use of a space you usually ignore. People are discovering new ways to make beautiful items more functional. That fabulous bench in your entryway may be storing winter coats in a secret storage space but your guests never need to know. No time to build anything? Not to worry. Simply hang a shoe rack on the back of a door, and you have a perfect set of compartments to hold supplies in any room.

he most important thing is that, while we are new to the Columbia market, we’ve been building homes for over 15 years in the central Missouri area. Over those 15 years we’ve built great relationships with many dependable subcontractors and suppliers throughout the entire Midwest region. Because of those close relationships, we’re able to offer the same great homes over a very broad scale. Whether it’s a home at Lake of the Ozarks or a home in Columbia we’re able to move with the demand. Because we bring with us the same subcontractors we’ve worked with over that past 15 years, we know what kind of quality and price we can count on, and that means a lot in an ever-changing housing market.

For an author, a home that ‘loves people’ BY MICHELE LERNER

Special To The Washington Post. When cookbook author Joan Nathan and her husband built their home 26 years ago, she knew that she wanted a home that “loves people” and would function as her laboratory for testing recipes, a warm home for her family and a welcoming place for entertaining as often as possible. Nathan, who has written 10 cookbooks and is working on her 11th, is a regular contributor to the New York Times, Food Arts magazine and Tablet Magazine. Her former PBS television series, “Jewish Cooking in America with Joan Nathan,” was nominated in 2000 for the James Beard Award for the best national television food show. On a recent snowy day, a complex soup was bubbling gently on her six-burner cook top. “Although I have a study upstairs above the kitchen, I do most of my writing right at the kitchen counter,” Nathan says. It’s easy to see why: Nathan’s kitchen opens to a casual family room with a two-story ceiling and a floor-to-ceiling stone, wood-burning fireplace. Both the kitchen and family room are wrapped in tall windows and have skylights to fill the spaces with light and to offer glimpses of Rock

Photo by Michele Lerner, special to the Washington Post

Creek Park and Nathan’s secluded front porch and garden. The dining room includes tall windows framing views of the park, a glass door to one of the home’s many decks, two doorways into the foyer and two doorways into the living room. Nathan’s kitchen includes dozens of drawers in varying sizes and shapes, many still with a strip of masking tape inside with her handwritten notes from 1988 about what belongs in each space. An enormous butcher block on wheels functions as a cutting board and serving table. Nathan insisted on a skylight to the baking section of her kitchen, which also

has a built-in desk and shelves for her cookbook collection. A matching loft, built on the opposite side of the family room above the kitchen, is Nathan’s office. The office holds her extensive collection of books and research materials. Gerson’s firstfloor study rests on a corner of the house wrapped in windows overlooking the woods. Nathan’s home won the Southern Home Award in 1990 from Southern Living magazine, and without any renovation since then, the residence functions just as planned, as a warm and comfortable setting for friends and family.

Tips for cutting your air-conditioning bills (StatePoint) Does the warmer weather that is just around the corner have to mean higher energy bills, too? No. There are numerous ways to keep your home cool and bills low this summer. After a few months off, it is vital to check that your air conditioning system is still working in an efficient and optimal manner. If you have a central air conditioning system, for peace of mind, you might want to have your system checked by an HVACR professional. In order to save, be sure to shop around for special deals, which are not difficult to find for seasonal preventive maintenance. Understand, however, that the proficiency of HVACR technicians differs greatly. Once an HVACR technician has inspected your system for efficiency, there are a number of things you can do to keep energy bills low: Clean your air filters. Check

them every couple of weeks and change them at least twice in the season, or as directed by the manufacturer. Don’t obstruct airflow around air conditioner units — keep them clear of plants and debris. Raise the thermostat about five degrees, because each degree you raise the thermostat will save you a percentage off your cooling energy bill. Compare energy bills from last year. If your costs have significantly increased, simply contact a

qualified HVACR technician — he or she can help determine the source of the problem. Remember, just because you have an energy-approved, eco-friendly, high-efficiency product, it does not mean automatic money and energy savings. For substantive results, proper installation, service and maintenance are important too. SBy taking preventive measures, you can rest assured that this season you will be cool while saving money and energy.

The future is now with smart appliances (StatePoint) When you think of “smart technology,” you may think of your smartphone, tablet or vehicle, but soon, you may also think of such household appliances as your dishwasher, refrigerator or laundry pair. H o m e b u i l d i n g professionals nationwide increasingly are working with manufacturers to install smart appliances into new and remodeled homes, in light of new government standards, technology advances and a focus on energy efficiency. “Smart appliances provide greater convenience, reduce energy consumption and help people live a more sustainable lifestyle,” says Maureen Sertich of Whirlpool Corp., which manufactures Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air and Amana appliance brands. “These transformative technologies allow consumers to learn about their energy use and

connect to their appliances online to actively manage their homes’ energy consumption.” According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 13 percent of the energy used in a typical home can be attributed to just four common appliances — the refrigerator, dishwasher, clothes washer and clothes dryer. But that will soon change, as leading companies take steps to improve upon energy efficient designs of these four appliances, with the added assistance of smart

appliance technology. For example, Whirlpool recently launched its Sixth Sense Live technology, which allows homeowners to control appliances from their computer or smartphone. Homeowners can, for instance, activate a washer’s fan for forgotten wet clothes; and the refrigerator will send a text message when the power supply has been disrupted. Smart appliances from these pioneering brands can also track energy consumption and connect to the “smart grid,” a modernized electric grid being rolled out nationwide that uses communications technology to more effectively manage electricity demand. This means that, with consumer permission, the appliance can respond to utility signals asking it to postpone or cut back operations when energy demand is high or more expensive.

Perk up your home with pattern (BPT) - Energize your home this spring with bright colors and bold patterns. “Patterns are hot, hot, hot,” says Cathie Pliess, program coordinator of design for The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and a certified interior designer. “Look for oversized patterns in bold colors on a white background.” Spring design is trending to naturals — florals, ethnic patterns, textures. Here are some tips on this year’s spring trends and how to use them to update your home easily and without spending a fortune. Big florals This year, florals are big and bright - think tropical blooms, not delicate wildflowers. Go to your local botanical garden, or visit a florist for inspiration.

“Floral patterns can bring color and life into a room,” Juli Sproules, an interior designer, says. Ethnic pizzazz Patterns are also becoming more inspired by global design. “This includes motifs with influences from African, Mexican and Islamic design stylized patterns, often in oversized translation,” Pliess notes. Mix, not match Don’t be afraid to mix patterns and textures. “Patterns used in

a room - stripes, florals, hand-painted designs or geometric prints shouldn’t be too ‘matchymatchy,’” Pliess says. “Instead, juxtapose old and new, soft and rough, various textures and patterns, like it’s been collected over time.” Sparkle it up Bring in this season’s metallics trend with warm bronzy colors. “You can mix metallics now too perhaps a soft rubbed bronze with highly polished silver or nickel,” Sproules says. Blue is the hue The cool calmness of blue makes it the hot color for spring. From navy to turquoise, set off blue with natural brights unexpected colors inspired by nature, like the rich purple of a cut gemstone, the orange-red of tropical fruit or watermelon pink.
