CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS GUIDE The Curriculum Connections guide is a resource for the Tri-C faculty community to connect classroom lessons with performances, exhibits and artist visits. If you haven’t attended a Tri-C Presents Performing Arts event we encourage you to take full advantage of the variety of performances and artists we bring to Cleveland. In addition, we can arrange tickets for cultural and performing arts events from Cleveland organizations such as the Cleveland Museum of Art, Great Lakes Theater, and Cleveland Playhouse. The arts are embedded in how we understand and make sense of our world. Let us help you discover ways to bring the arts into your classroom and support the creativity in your students while encouraging connections to the objectives and goals of your class.

HI-LIGHTS

• Curriculum Connections are not just for Creative Arts faculty. Many of the performances and works have cultural, political, social and historical applications. Each performance identifies classes we think are a good fit, but I’m sure you can add many more. • Artists often visit Cleveland for a period ahead of their performance. As part of their residency, we can arrange for a workshop, demonstration or conversation in your class. • All of our programs are free to the public, or if it is ticketed, can be subsidized up to $20/per ticket through a generous fund by the Kulas Foundation and the Tri-C Foundation. • Join our year-long arts integration program: Project Gilgamesh To Learn more visit www.tri-c.edu/gilgamesh We look forward to working with you in the 2011-2012 academic year.

INGENUITY FEST 2011 IngenuityFest returns in 2011 to the Veteran’s Memorial (Detroit Superior) Bridge in Downtown Cleveland. The Festival, in its 7th year, highlights and explores the intersections between Art and Technology. A wide range of learning opportunities exists with the artists, technologists, and performers.

Squonk Opera

This year, Ingenuity features Squonk Opera’s Astro-rama. This multi-media live performance combines theater, music, projections, and social media. Squonk has performed across the country and around the world and was recently featured on America’s Got Talent.

Down and Out In The Magic Kingdom

Ingenuity will also be feature a theatrical adaptation of Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom. It’s the 22nd Century: money is obsolete, energy is plentiful, and everyone lives forever. So why is attraction designer, Julius having such a bad day? For starters he’s solving his own murder and a rival design group is hell bent on turning everything in The Magic Kingdom virtual. This theatrical adaptation combines graphic novel projections with live actors. The audience essentially experiences a radio play but watches projections of illustrations essentially creating a live graphic novel. The piece will later be produced for Vimeo to be shared online.

Opportunities for Students/Faculty

• Workshops in the classroom ranging from multimedia production to music composition and lyric writing to the impact of sound on the human body. • Visit Ingenuity’s site in the week prior to IngenuityFest to view the set being assembled on the Superior Viaduct and learn about the nuts and bolts of production and the nature of site-specific production. • Astro-rama provides the opportunity to explore viral marketing. The storyline of the show hinges on aliens crash landing in Cleveland. Facebook, twitter, and YouTube provide valuable outlets to tell the story of Squonk in a satirical fashion drawing an audience closer to examine if the phenomenon is real or not. • Acting improv also comes into play as Ingenuity is searching for groups to play protestors and MIB (Men in Black) to guard the UFO crash site. • Workshops with directors, actors, playwrights, illustrators to learn about adaptations. Theatre Willkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome! Take your seat at the Kit Kat Club, a decadent cabaret in pre-war Berlin where Clifford Bradshaw, a young American writer, falls in love with the club’s headlining performer, Sally Bowles. Playfully presided over by an outrageously rambunctious Emcee and bursting with a bevy of Broadway’s greatest hits, this Tony Award-winning tale of love, war and the struggle to survive in tumultuous times disarms and delights.

The greatest love story ever told, Shakespeare’s powerfully poetic and tragic tale of love and loss will steal your heart and leave you breathless. Transcending the hate of warring factions, in defiance of their parents and in secrecy from their closest friends, two young, star-crossed lovers risk all they have to be together.
