PROJECT GILGAMESH 2011-2012 Involve your students with this ambitious project and work with composer, violinist and artist-in-residence Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) 2
Mighty Gilgamesh dreams a friend. Standing together the two prevail, but gods decree death. Struggle-seek, there is no why. Build cities, write stories; All must die.
The Department of Creative Arts and the Tri-C Presents Performing Arts Series are proud to introduce Project Gilgamesh; a year-long campus wide exploration of poems, themes, songs and study of the world’s oldest story The Epic of Gilgamesh. Project Gilgamesh is sponsored by Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C Ž) and made possible in part by a grant from the Association of Performing Arts Presenters Creative Campus Innovations Grant Program, funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council. 3
Unfamiliar with The Epic of Gilgamesh? Uncertain about how to integrate the arts into your classroom? Looking to enrich your classroom by incorporating another perspective?
A variety of resources have been assembled to help you bring The Epic of Gilgamesh to life in your classroom. • The text of The Epic of Gilgamesh in different formats. • Lesson plans encompassing varied approaches to the epic. • A bibliographic guide to translations and scholarly books and articles. • Resources developed by partner organizations: lecture series, gallery talks and PowerPoints developed by The Cleveland Museum of Art; and writing prompts and scripts developed by Great Lakes Theater.
These resources and links can be found online at www.tri-c.edu/gilgamesh. 4
Project Gilgamesh has identified artists and content experts who can also serve as resources. • Members of the Project Gilgamesh faculty Advisory Council can offer guidance about how to incorporate the epic into your classroom. • Guest artists and content experts—whether Tri-C Faculty Members, local artists, or educators from The Cleveland Museum of Art or Great Lakes Theater -- can enhance your class by conducting a poetry workshop, offering reflections on the nature of leadership, or giving a lecture about the ancient Sumerians. Each workshop or lecture is 50-75 minutes in length. Find the roster and booking form online. • Tri-C Presents will sponsor a brown bag lunch lecture and workshop series featuring our guest artists and content experts. These events will take place on multiple Tri-C campuses. They will be free and open to the entire campus community and to the public at large. The schedule will be posted online.
Information about how to access these resources can be found online at www.tri-c.edu/gilgamesh. 5

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Composer-in-residence Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) will visit Tri-C in the fall to record his version of the Project Gilgamesh songbook with Tri-C student musicians, faculty and members of the community at the Center for Creative Arts recording studios. DBR will make the songbook and recording available to everyone at Tri-C to encourage students and faculty to create their own work using his music and recordings. Throughout the residency, DBR will work with students to shape their performances into two evenings of original work titled Songbook Unbound to be presented by Tri-C in the fall and spring.
In addition, DBR will conduct workshops and master classes about his creative method, the songbook and the recording process. In October of 2012, DBR will perform the songbook as part of the Tri-C Presents season. 8
Daniel Bernard Roumain
Having carved a reputation for himself as an innovative composer, performer, violinist, and band leader, Haitian-American artist Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) melds his classical music roots with his own cultural references and vibrant musical imagination. Proving that he’s “about as omnivorous as a contemporary artist gets” (New York Times), DBR is perhaps the only composer who has collaborated and performed with Philip Glass, Cassandra Wilson, Bill T. Jones, and Lady Gaga. He has received commissions from Carnegie Hall, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), the Library of Congress, and the sports channel ESPN. He has appeared on American Idol (FOX), America’s Assignment (CBS Evening News), E:60 (ESPN) and been voted one of the “Top 100 New Yorkers” (New York Resident), “Top 40 Under 40 business people” (Crain’s New York Business), “Top 5 Tomorrow’s Newsmakers” (1010 WINS Radio), and spotlighted as a “New Face of Classical Music” (Esquire Magazine). Most recently DBR has created a new evening length-work, Symphony for the Dance Floor, for the 2011 BAM Next Wave Festival and ASU Gammage, and composed music for the Atlanta Ballet, Home in 7, with the choreographer Amy Seiwert and the poet Marc Bamuthi Joseph. www.dbrmusic.com

Evaluation is an important component of Project Gilgamesh. The Creative Arts Division is working with Dr. Jennifer Spielvogel, Tri-C’s Vice President for Planning and Institutional Effectiveness, to measure progress on the project and to determine its impact. It is anticipated that Project Gilgamesh will add to the small body of evidence that has been produced to measure the impact of the arts at the college level, similar to that already demonstrated at the pre-collegiate level. We hope that Project Gilgamesh will generate the exceptional outcomes –for students, faculty, the College, the community, and participating artists – that can occur when artists help to unleash student potential through a uniquely integrated collaboration. Faculty members can assist in the evaluation process as follows. 1. Report that you are teaching The Epic of Gilgamesh in your classroom(s). Summarize your approach to the epic and relevant class assignments. Tell us whether or not you utilized any of the resources or links provided on this website and whether or not you integrated the arts into your instruction, either with the help of a guest artist or lecturer or on your own. 2.Have your students fill out a project evaluation form once your Gilgamesh-related lesson is finished. 3.Fill out a faculty evaluation form yourself. The relevant forms will be available on the Project Gilgamesh faculty resource website at www.tri-c.edu/gilgamesh under the heading “Evaluation.” Directions for downloading and returning these forms can be found online on the Evaluation page. 14
