Throughout our 130-year history, we have earned an unrivalled reputation for producing the very highest quality coffins and caskets, handcrafted by our in-house team of highly skilled craftsmen and women. As well as the traditionally styled coffins, we are also leading the way in the creation of more contemporary styled coffins as well as environmentally-friendly coffins from a range of materials such as seagrass and willow. Backed up with our prompt delivery service and first-class customer care, Bradnam Joinery is second to none in the funeral supplies industry.

STORY SO FAR
Throughout the years the company has always been at the forefront of quality, service and innovation. Bradnam Joinery prides itself on authentic craftmanship, using both traditional and modern techniques to design custom solutions.
Originally founded in 1890 as ‘F. Bradnam & Sons’ by Frederick Bradnam, who was a woodturner, the business has developed over the years, producing a wide range of wood products from fencing panels and sheds to trailers and cattle mangers. In the mid-50s, Fred’s son John took over the company and renamed it ‘J. Bradnam and Sons’. By the 1960s the business started manufacturing solid wood coffins and by 1967, introduced the production of veneered coffins to local funeral directors. The business started to grow rapidly and in 1976, Bradnam Joinery was established by Jack Bradnam (fourth generation of the company founder) to concentrate on coffin manufacture. In 1999, Bob Spittle was part of a management buyout of the business. His son David joined the company in 2004 and Bob took full ownership of Bradnam Joinery in 2009. Today, Bradnam Joinery continues to maintain a family ethos.
1890–1908
Frederick Bradnam, a woodturner and the great grandfather of Jack Bradnam, started the original family business ‘F. Bradnam & Sons’.
THE MID-50S
The company took on a new name – ‘J. Bradnam and Sons’ – which was comprised of John Bradnam (Fred’s son and his sons). This was based in Haverhill on Withersfield Road. During this time, ‘J. Bradnam and Sons’ mainly supplied packing cases, piers, fencing panels, sheds and paving slabs.
FROM THE 30S TO THE 50S
During this time, the family ran a sawmill business making trailers, gates and cattle mangers, and continued to trade throughout the war.
1976
Bradnam Joinery Limited was established by Jack Bradnam (fourth generation of the founder of the company) as a separate company to concentrate on coffin manufacturing.
THE 1960S
By the mid-late ‘60s, the business had developed into two broad areas of builders’ merchants and coffin manufacturer. During this time, solid wood coffins were more popular but Victor (Jack’s father) set out in introducing veneered coffins to the funeral directors in this area, to compete with the bigger manufacturing companies who were already producing these. Sales of veneered coffins started to increase and so the company began to grow.
1981
During its early years, the company saw rapid growth and in 1981, moved to larger premises on the Hollands Road industrial estate.
2004-2009
Jack Bradnam had established a successful management team, and then retired in 2004. By 2009, Bob Spittle was the only shareholder that remained and once again the company became a family-run business.
1994
Over the next 10 years, the company outgrew the Hollands Road premises and moved to its current location on Rookwood Way.
Today
The company is taking big strides in order to meet demand, by expanding its infrastructure and investing in first-rate machinery.
2018–2020
In 2018, the company acquired another site on Rookwood Way next to the main site and in 2020, work started on a 10,000 sq. ft warehouse which will be used to consolidate the company’s stock holdings.

Seagrass
Seagrass is highly renewable and, once spun into a strong yarn, is woven into this beautiful, curve ended coffin. Supplied with a fitted natural cotton lining and rope handles.
Willow
A traditional style, natural willow coffin suitable for cremation and burial. It features a wooden base, load-bearing handles and is supplied with a cotton lining and matching quilt and pillow.
