Jeanne, Lisa and Barbara have been selected to lead the TriDistrict Community Education Department following the retirement of Dr. Bernadette McKenzie in June. Together, the three new Community Education Directors are working with the TriDistrict staff to continue our history of providing inspiring and high quality opportunities for learning experiences in the Inver Grove Heights, South St. Paul, and West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan school districts. We’ve put together some exciting opportunities for the community this winter, take a few minutes to browse our catalog and find a new activity to spark your passion. If you are interested in getting involved in TriDistrict Community Education in volunteer or leadership opportunities please contact your local director.

Join Our TriDistrict Community Education Advisory Council! We are seeking applications from community members who wish to help provide quality lifelong learning opportunities for all residents. Membership consists of up to 21 citizens and community members, school district employees and municipal representatives. Family Fun with The Raptor Center

Bring the whole family for a morning of fun and STEM learning. The Raptor Center will be presenting their program Raptors of Minnesota, where you'll explore the different raptors found in Minnesota and their role in the environment. Participants learn the three key features of all raptors and learn why they are different from other birds.This program will be FREE to all but preregistration is appreciated due to capacity. Valentine’s Cookies - Yum Yum!

Just in time for Valentine’s Day! What a fun time you will have baking the pre-made dough into heart-shaped cookies and decorating them so you will be all ready for Valentine’s Day. You may even want to give some as gifts! Working in teams of 4 (2 adults -2 kids) we will bake and decorate with pretty frosting and trims. Family Luminary Lit Snowshoe Trail of Fun

Join us at Thompson County Park to enjoy the park and trails at night with the stars overhead. Enjoy our Minnesota winter at night! We will have one loop lit with ice luminaries to follow throughout the park, but you can enjoy the whole park. Gather by the bonfire for ghost stories, hot chocolate, and roasted marshmallows afterward. Fee includes snowshoes, but you can also bring your own. Wabasha Street Cave Tour

Come hear and see the history of these sandstone caves as seen on the History Channel “Secret Passages”. You will explore the original mined caves and see the finished caves. If you took dance as a child, you would be surprised how much it is like riding a bike and how you have not forgotten as much as you think. Minnesota State Capitol Tour

Join us for a guided tour to see the restoration effort up close and get an overview of Capitol history, art, architecture, and state government. Some highlights include the second-largest selfsupported marble dome in the world, decorative art, murals, and paintings restored to original 1905 patterns and colors. And weather permitting, walk to the Quadriga (golden horses) on the roof. A portion of proceeds is donated to the Minnesota Historical Society. Glassblowing Fundamentals: Paperweights

Work with an instructor at Vandalia Glassworks to design and create a solid paperweight unique to you. The paperweight is the most fun and forgiving piece for first time glassblowers. You’ll learn basic fundamentals of glasswork including gathering, coloring, shaping, and transferring the piece off the pipe. Wear closed toe shoes, clothes you can get dirty, and dress in layers as the studio can get quite warm. Traditional Southern Cooking - A Dinner

Beginning in the 1690's, food in the U.S. deep south was heavily influenced by early settlers from France, Germany and Spain. Slaves from Senegal, Africa, then Cuban refugees and Cajuns from Nova Scotia, Canada also contributed to the medley of flavors using the wealth of local seafood, vegetables, poultry, livestock and pecans. Volunteer income tax preparers will be doing tax returns free of charge. These tax counselors are trained to assist with BASIC tax forms and problems, therefore, Tax Assistance will be provided to seniors who are 55 years or older and who are low income. Tax service will be provided only for uncomplicated income and property taxes (including rent rebates). Tax assistance guidelines are as follows:

Driver Safety Courses These driver improvement courses are taught by MN HWY Safety and Research Center trained instructors. The class will explore changes in laws, the latest vehicle technology and provide you with easy to use defensive driving tips. In addition, we will explore traffic safety and accident prevention. Course completion allows for a 10% reduction on automobile insurance premiums for those age 55 and over. An eight hour course is initially required, followed by a four hour refresher class every three years. Augusta Amish Tour

Arrive at The Norske Nook Restaurant in Osseo, WI. for a Norwegian meal. Menu: Lefse omelet wrap, hash browns, eggs, cheese, sausage links wrapped inside lefse along with a piece of their famous Norske Nook homemade pie. Next we will head to Augusta, WI to pick up a local guide at the Wood Shed store to tour the amazing Amish Community. See a living link with the past through the visible authentic lifestyle of the Amish. You may see horse-drawn buggies, one-room schools, Amish only grocery stores, horse teams in the fields and greenhouses. The Amish came to Augusta in 1978 and have grown to over 150 families. They have changed very little in their beliefs and way of life in over 250 years, living like our great-great grandparents did. At the end of driveways, they sell items such as baked goods, seed plants, eggs, maple syrup, and more. No pictures can be taken. Before returning to the Wood Shed, we will stop at Weavers Country Mennonite Store in Fall Creek, WI. It is a unique place that is operated by the Mennonites. The store offers bulk foods, cooking supplies and spices with lots of things to buy. All sales are cash only. Driver Education Classroom and Behind the Wheel

Our Driver Education program is taught by certified licensed instructors. The state of Minnesota requires anyone under the age of 18 wishing to obtain a MN Driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s License to complete an approved course in driver education. This course must include a minimum of 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. The classroom includes lecture, class discussion, guest speakers, films, written work from textbooks and written tests. Behind-the-wheel training allows a student to practice driving on public streets and highways with an instructor in a dual-control (two brake) car. The fee is $375. Payment can be made in full at the time of registration or pay $175 at the beginning of class and $200 at the end of the 30 hours prior to the student receiving the 'blue' card. Point of Impact Parent Class

Parents are invited to attend the Point of Impact, Teen Driver Safety Awareness Program. This course is FREE to parents. The goal of this program is to reduce the number of crashes, injuries and deaths involving novice teen drivers by increasing parent awareness of teen driver safety issues and enhancing parental involvement in developing safer teen drivers. You do not need to pre-register for this class.

Here is your chance to be part of a novelty percussion ensemble performing on items such as - Garbage Cans, Buckets, Brooms, Chairs, Wooden Poles, etc. This is a course designed for nonpercussion band students or young percussion students. Simley Theatre Presents: Simley Theatre Winter One Act Plays The Internet is Distract--OH LOOK A KITTEN!” - MSHSL Competition Performance Micah only has twenty minutes to finish her paper on The Great Gatsby. She just needs to check a few facts on the internet first. Unfortunately, the web is a nefariously wacky place where boxing cats, Facebook lurkers, and pig-throwing games threaten to take over Micah's schoolwork, or worse. Will she finish her paper and escape with her life before the school bell rings? A high-octane comedy that explores the rabbit hole of distraction we all go down every time we go online. “Fourteen Lines” Carly and her friends are all in danger of failing Senior English--and not graduating--if they don't do well on the final exam. And the exam is a killer. Ms. Drew, their teacher, has decided that the final grade exam grade will be based on one task alone: the memorization and recitation of a Shakespearean sonnet. While liberally spiced with many comic moments, Fourteen Lines manages to smuggle in Shakespeare and challenge both actors and audience alike with the crucial question, "What does love require?".

Adult Programs are open to everyone age 15 and older unless otherwise noted.

Registration begins when you receive your catalog and remains open until each class is filled or cancelled. Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. We encourage you to register early!

You will only hear from us in the event of a class change, cancellation or if the class is full.

Refunds

Requests for a refund by individuals who need to cancel must be received by our office seven days prior to the first class session. A $10 service charge may be added if you must cancel a class. No refunds are issued after the first class session.

Class & Activity Cancellation

If there is insufficient enrollment for a program, you will be notified by phone or e-mail and you will receive a full refund. Please include a phone number on your registration form where you can be contacted during the day. Community Education assumes no responsibility for reaching registrants who do not provide a daytime phone number.

Weather Cancellations

Classes may be cancelled due to inclement weather or for other unavoidable reasons. These sessions are made up whenever possible. Cancellations due to severe weather are announced on WCCO Radio (830 on the AM dial), Channel 4 (WCCO), Channel 5 (KSTP) and Channel 11 (KARE). You will be contacted by Community Education.

Photograph Use Policy

Photographs, videos and other documentation taken at school or Community Education activities may be submitted to newspapers, used on district web sites, social media sites or appear in publications. Written requests not to publish photos of specific students will be honored.

UCare

UCare members may be eligible for a $15 discount on most classes in this catalog. If a class is less than $15, the member may take the class free of charge. UCare for Seniors and EssentiaCare members may take one $15 discount per class per calendar year. Members must be a UCare member at the time of the registration, and throughout the duration of the class. Members need to include their UCare ID numbers when registering. Veterans Memorial Community Center National Guard Armory Building 8055 Barbara Avenue,Inver Grove Heights Activities and information for parents and children, ages birth through elementary school age. All family members are invited. Fun activities and places to go this summer! Many hands-on activities and safety tips are available, plus talk with experts from more than 70 agencies and organizations.
