What is Hypnotherapy? By Cheryle Cote

Hypnotherapy uses the state of hypnosis to affect positive change in a person’s life. Contrary to how the media and movies portray hypnosis, you are never “out”, “unconscious”, or made to do something against your will, morals or ethics. You are aware of what is being said and you are in full control at all times. What is the state of hypnosis you might ask? We drift in and out of natural hypnosis throughout the day while reading and using our imagination to create the scene in our mind from the words on the page, watching a movie, driving, daydreaming or watching television ads. It is a state of being open to suggestion at a deeper level of mind to access the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is about 95 per cent of your mind while your conscious mind is only about five per cent. The subconscious exists in a lower frequency range than the conscious mind does. Think of it as a different radio station. Utilizing the subconscious allows for transformations that change behaviours. Beta is your awake and aware conscious mind’s primary operating frequency (14 cycles per second and higher). This is the part of the mind that uses logic, deduction, reasoning, willpower and judgement. Quite often this part of the mind is sceptical, negative, discerning and resistant to change. This part of the mind acts like a guard to protect the status quo. Think of this part of your mind like an old man who is trying to protect you, even if he is set in his ways.

The subconscious, on the other hand, is operating in Alpha, Theta and Delta frequencies (below 14, seven and four cycles per second). This part of the mind is connected to the autonomic nervous system, our automatic functioning of the body such as breathing, digestion, cell replication, etc. The subconscious is holistic, intuitive, creative and sensory. Think of the subconscious mind like a naive four year old child. It doesn’t distinguish truth from lies, is quite literal, doesn’t understand humour and is eager to please and await instructions. Most hypnosis takes place in the state of Alpha and sometimes Theta. Even in Alpha, you are 200 times more suggestible than in the state of Beta. A hypnotherapist’s job is to bypass the conscious mind and communicate with the subconscious mind to create positive changes that a client desires. This is usually done through relaxation, but for strong analytical minds, sometimes distraction, confusion or boredom techniques are used. Once the conscious mind steps aside, the subconscious will take in the new information easily. One of the keys with hypnotherapy is to use repetition to imbed the new information in the subconscious. The subconscious operates when we drive... why?...because we do it over and over again. After we have driven a little while, we don’t think about what to do when we drive, we just do it automatically. To develop a new habit, it must be done repeatedly to take effect. Preferably, repeated for at least a month. For the above reason, recordings are often used in conjunction with one-on-one hypnotherapy sessions. The one-on-one sessions are used to fine tune and address the individual’s progress and issues specifically, while the recordings reinforce the positive information between sessions. WOW! With four issues under our belts, we really feel like we are in the publishing business now. Our first year has been incredible! As with any new business, we experienced a few bumps along the way, but that hasn’t deterred us from focusing on our goal which is to share valuable information with our readers in a traditional manner.

Both Allison and I feel very fortunate to have met a number of passionate people; all dedicated not only to their craft, but on making the world a better place. We are no longer surprised when we hear that someone left a successful career in a conventional business to live in an ashram, take up meditation, hike Mount Kilimanjaro, or whatever it was they needed to do to regroup, refocus and rebalance.

Empower Yourself

Health and Success are Within Reach By Rumy Rendina

A 20 year journey in a span of five seconds, that’s how four months of my life is best described. You see; my whole world came crashing down when my actions in life were no longer in line with my soul’s purpose. Years of resisting myself and everyone in my life created that defining moment. I was no longer the wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend or professional I needed or wanted to be. Blinded by what was truly important to me, I lost everything which could have brought an authentic way of being to life. With this realization, the incredible adventure began. I opened up my world to any possibility and took steps within my abilities. My determination was unconquerable, and my desire to face my fears in order to truly find myself again, took over.

Trifecta Magazine MIND | BODY | SOUL

Discovering Body Talk By Maureen Rose

Living day-to-day takes more and more out of us and tends to clog up the mind, body and soul. This is what I discovered when I was introduced to Body Talk. Body Talk is quantum healing on a conscious level that heals mind, body and soul.

I admit I was scared during my first session and I had lots of questions. I wanted to understand what was going on and wanted to know how my practitioner was reading my mind and body. I now know it was the beginning of the development of techniques that pin point your body and your mind— the things that influence you and the balance your need to survive each day. It was amazing and shocking what my practitioner knew about me. How could someone possibly know I was mad at my husband for being angry? How could someone know all of the intimate details of my life that I kept a secret from everyone? Not everyone believes that it only takes one moment to change your mind. Think about it... if this were true, could it only take one moment to change behaviour? Does the same apply to illness? How about our habits, thoughts or the feelings that never did benefit us?

I felt a lost connection with my own body and in the mist of this confusion, the other things that muddled up who I truly am came to the surface. These are my real priorities. I was exposed on a grand scale to the miracles and coincidences that came with understanding Body Talk with help from my very effective teacher, Karla. The health benefits of Body Talk are numerous if you can get your head around a new way of thinking. During my sessions, I experienced a pain in my tooth; it seemed so insignificant, yet stood in the way of my healing journey. I couldn’t focus because of it. I also experienced a headache, but both were healed during my four days of fundamental training. I’ve had to face myself, my friends, my family, my brain, my body, my inner self, my sexuality, my limits, my boundaries and my disease, but I have loved every moment of it. The truth is, anything is possible and I mean anything, if you are open to it. As a tree specialist and gardener by trade, I am looking forward to applying these techniques on not only people, but plants and animals as well. The possibilities seem endless. The Way of Compassion By Scott Clark

When I was 19 years old, I suffered from anxiety attacks. If you have suffered from anxiety you know how debilitating it can be. Over the course of a couple years, the attacks seem to worsen and life for me began to dramatically change. Every choice I made was dictated upon how I felt emotionally. Life became hopeless.

I had a really amazing childhood. My family always supported me in being the very best me. They empowered me to succeed in anything that I found interest in and offered me anything I wanted within the means of our resources. To this day, I still search for meaning and try to understand what brought about the anxiety attacks, yet it still remains a mystery.

For the sake of staying on topic, I will save you from the play by play thoughts and emotions that would ramble through my head in the midst of these anxiety attacks. What is most important for you to know is the degree in which I let it control me and how destructive the nature of my self talk was. Countless times I cried and wanted to give up. The guilt, shame and hopelessness I felt was overwhelming. My life became meaningless and my future looked doomed. My wife (who was my girlfriend at the time), was dramatically affected by my anxiety. This of course, makes sense as she was closest to my heart and would be the first one to hear about it. What started out as an extraordinary relationship between two soul mates soon became wearing and destructive. The stress was immense and I could see the weight it had on her own happiness. Talking was my only way of dealing with the anxiety and I became completely vulnerable with her, even at the expense of her own comfort. I am still in awe she stuck with me through it all. She eventually stood for the security, protection, and love she once found in me, becoming the pillar of support in our relationship. It was an era of my life that I will never forget, and will always be grateful for. Today I take great pleasure in living an inspiring, purposeful life by supporting others in awakening them to their full potential. Sometimes this entails healing old wounds, dissolving limiting beliefs, and teaching/understanding total self-acceptance. From my own experience there has been no greater power of healing than the power of listening. Everyday I get to practice what I preach, own amazingness and love myself for who I am, but I give the real credit to my wife, and everyone else who showed me compassion and unconditional love along the way. Imagine a world without compassion? A world without forgiveness? The most inspirational people in life are those who show support and love through their actions in place of judgment and condemnation. They see us not as wrong, bad or evil. The sparkle in their gaze shines compassion, as they see us in the pure potential in which we were born. We all need someone in our life that allows us to drop the masks, quit looking for approval, and simply be ourselves. When we are not being judged from outside there is no better way to get to be familiar with who we are on the inside! Turning our attention inward, seeking to understand ourselves and the potential that others see in us, is the journey of self-discovery. Self-acceptance is the key ingredient for healing. The potential to live an inspiring life comes in direct proportion to the degree in which we accept ourselves for who we are and the unlimited potential we are born with. Vulnerability takes a tremendous amount of courage, but tuning in to the whispers of the heart will forever change the course of happiness.

Trifecta Magazine MIND | BODY | SOUL

Compassion is the way of the new world as people continue to strive for a happier, more meaningful life. Dictatorship, wars, command and control, anger, fighting, inequality and suppression have become tiresome. In their place, cooperation, acceptance, love and peace blossom as each of us claiming individual responsibility not just for our own lives, but to the greater whole. To be compassionate is to show sympathy, love and acceptance for our fellow brothers and sisters, to see them as whole, as equal, and to know that somewhere deep down, we have gone through similar experiences, and love is what pulled us through. So next time you hear yourself judging someone, condemning or blaming them, slow down and take a look in the mirror. Our inability to let others be just as they are is our own need for recognition. Consider all the times you had to prove yourself, and sacrifice your own authenticity, because people were pointing fingers. People will continuously struggle to prove themselves in the face of judgment, often to the point that they don’t even recognize themselves. The best way to learn to be yourself is to teach others to be themselves. Love others how they need to be loved. Show compassion where you once held anger. Be the one person in someone’s life who actually cares. You may find that the sacrifices you are making along the way are actually drawing closer the things you have been seeking all along. Love, listening and joy are there when you offer it. People will come to you because you are the peace they truly need you to be. Time will begin to slow down again, the stresses and anxieties fade. All the needs to be someone else and do all these crazy things to make the world happy come to a halt, because the very most important thing you have brought to the world is realized... just you! Almost everyone who knows me will know that I am NOT a fan of cold weather but I have to admit, I do enjoy living in a climate where we experience four seasons (even though I joke that Alberta has only two: Winter and August). Truthfully though, my favourite time of year is Fall. I love everything in Autumn – the leaves changing colours (though I miss the vibrant reds and oranges on the tress in my native Ontario), Thanksgiving (even though I get really home-sick during this holiday) and of course, there’s Halloween! I have always loved Halloween. As a kid it’s a no-brainer. I mean what kid doesn’t enjoy a sugar-fuelled holiday? But for me, it wasn’t about the candy, it was about dressing up and taking on a whole different persona. It was about BE-ING someone else. They say you can get great insights into your true life purpose by thinking back to what you wanted to be when you grew up and I say, you can also get these insights by looking back on what you dressed up as for Halloween. Let me guess, you’re trying to remember that right now aren’t you? Well, if you’re currently at a cross-roads, and trying to figure out your path in life, this is a worthwhile exercise. When we are quite young, we have an innate knowing about ourselves that we do not question. We are fully in-tune with our inner guidance and trust it up until the point that adults in our lives (usually parents) inadvertently teach us that our inner knowing isn’t reliable. So the best indicators of your life purpose are to look back at what you wanted to be when you were quite young and to also examine the interests you had when you were 12 or 13. Around that time in your life (as you are entering puberty) insights into your path and purpose seem to bubble up to the surface. Your inner guidance intuitively leads you to pursue hobbies and interests that are in alignment with who you truly are. At this age, teachers, parents, and other adults in your life likely have not yet tried to steer you into a “proper” vocation that will sustain you as an adult so the sky is the limit when it comes to dreaming of your future.

On my first Halloween, my TALENTED mom sewed a beautiful fairy god-mother dress and decorated it with gold sparkly stars. I wore a long blonde wig and carried a magic wand. The next year, my SMART mom took the same costume, dyed it black, stuck some pumpkin cut-outs on it, and I went as a witch. Now some of you may be thinking these two costumes are polar opposites but they aren’t really. A fairy god-mother is someone who helps people in need and makes their wishes come true. A witch, in the true sense, is someone who holds great wisdom and knowledge in spirituality and the ways of the earth and who seeks, within nature, that which contributes to health and well-being. They are both spiritual beings who work to help others. My interest in witches continued as I grew. I remember playing “witches” with my friends at school and wishing I could be BE Glinda,

garden trends the Good Witch from Wizard of Oz. Oh, how I love that movie! To this day, it’s my all-time favourite! As I got older I still enjoyed dressing up for Halloween and some of my favourite costumes included Xena Warrior Princess (fighting for those unable to defend themselves) and a hippy (it’s all about peace and love man).

Gearing Up to Gear Down in the Garden By Joanne Dafoe

As we continue to enjoy our outdoor spaces, it is time to take stock of your garden successes. What areas of the garden were you happy with? Which plants were less/more susceptible to insect and disease challenges? Did you notice the obscene amount of aphids on the Diablo Ninebark this year? What spots need to be filled in? Fall is a fabulous time to plant - conditions and prices are excellent! Start a garden journal and take lots of pictures. Winter is long and we tend to forget what gave us great joy, and what caused us grief in the garden! 5 Tips for Fall Gardening

Considering that I turned out to be a Spiritual Life Coach and Angel Therapy Practitioner, I’d say my past costume choices reveal a lot about who I am on the inside and what my true purpose in life is. Today, I help women who feel unfulfilled, frustrated and just plain stuck in life, discover what makes their heart sing so they can start creating, and living, the life they truly deserve. I’d say that pretty much sounds like a fairy god-mother now doesn’t it?

• Switch out summer annuals in your pots, choosing fall stunners like Autumn Joy Sedum, Ornamental Cabbage, Fall Mums and Ornamental Grass • Stop fertilizing and pruning to allow plants to harden off for winter • Plant Fall bulbs for early Spring colour - Tulips, Fritillaria and Crocus give a blast of colour while the snow is still melting!

I definitely know that working with my clients feels like a magical process and although I don’t carry a magic wand, there’s definitely a transformation that often takes place in just 30 minutes together. Clients usually begin a session feeling heavy with worry but finish, feeling relieved from anxiety and more empowered to take positive action. There’s no POUF of smoke or fairy dust sprinkles that fall from the sky but it always feels like magic to me! Ramona Remesat Spiritual Life Coach & Angel Therapy Practitioner® www.connect2yourangels.com

• Plant garlic bulbs - choose a sunny location with well drained soil. You will never go back to store bought garlic once you plant your own! • Amend you soil with compost to ensure favourable planting conditions for 2015 Gardening does not end in Autumn - in some ways, it is just the beginning. We start to prepare our gardens for next year, and ensure it is able to withstand the inevitably cold winter, and it leaves us noting successes and dreaming of a new glorious season. Happy Fall gardening!

making a difference

Photographs by Riverwood Photography

Behaviour Therapy and Learning Centre Motivating, Educating and Empowering our Children Established in 2004, Behaviour Therapy and Learning Centre (BTLC) is entering its tenth year of changing lives! Over the past decade, BTLC has helped numerous children diagnosed with ASD and other developmental disabilities make incredible strides in behavior and skills development. BTLC’s special education teachers, registered therapists and program assistants deliver comprehensive, specialized and individualized education for each child to meet their complex learning needs. It’s their individualization and intensive support from the small class size and high staff-to-child ratio, the application of Applied Behaviour Analysis and Discrete Trial Teaching within a group format, and an expert clinical team that sets BTLC apart. Year after year, our students make exceptional strides because of our unique programming.

We have a very social class this year! After months of focusing intensively on individual functional skills, our kids are ready to take things to the next level! The children are now much more motivated to be with each other and play together as they take turns giving each other ‘rocket rides’ down the hallway, while playing ‘dog pile’, and huddling together in the classroom tent as they hide away from the ‘scary bear’.

12 |

trifectamagazine.ca

Their social awareness and motivation to be social has expanded remarkably. They are interacting naturally with each other and our teachers are even noticing that they are being silly with each other when the teachers’ backs are turned! Our next goals are learning how to comment on others’ actions, answer social questions, engage in basic conversation and play interactively within play centres that you would find in most typical preschool classrooms.

Because ASD affects the development of social and communication skills, it can also affect the development of important skills needed for interactive play and social games, such as the ability to learn from others by watching and copying their actions, following group directions, and being expressive when excited without being too silly and going overboard. Our classes are making big strides in these areas. We are now working on typical gym instructions and games like “Captain’s Coming,” Red Light-Green Light, partner games and playing chase. To the kids, it’s just pure fun but it is also much more- it’s a huge step towards inclusion and integration in a typical classroom. There is Nothing in a Caterpillar That Tells You It’s Going to be a Butterfly By Deborah Nichol We make assumptions about people; they may be judgements or just observations on what we think we know or what we see. Each of us thinks we see things as they are, and that we are objective. But we see the world, not as it is, but as we are or as we are conditioned to see it. Have you ever seen a frog jump backwards? Have you ever seen a cat try to be a dog? Has spring ever decided not to come? Animals and nature never try to be anything other than what they were meant to be. Nature relies on its instincts, we all have instincts too, however we are conditioned not to trust them and it starts at an early age. Adults assume that babies and children do not know what they want, so we tell them. We make decisions for them, instead of teaching them how to make them for themselves. We talk, when we should listen. Then they become teenagers and young adults that struggle with the smallest challenges, then, it is expected as an adult to make all the right decisions. When this doesn’t happen, we fail to see how this person will find their way. We all find our way eventually, some take longer than others, but we all do, and when it does happen it’s miraculous. Miracles happen when we trust our natural instincts, when we take time to figure out who we are and when we are true to ourselves, we go with the flow, and we are one with the natural cycle of our life. This is the journey we seek, to be who we are meant to be. Just as a caterpillar has to cocoon itself in order to turn into a butterfly, the journey doesn’t end there, the butterfly must eat its way out of the cocoon to gather strength to fly. So we can be there for others as they go on their journey but we cannot do it for them, otherwise they will not gather enough strength for their own journey.

some time to find out if you trust your instincts or your gut as some might refer to: 1.

Do I trust my instincts? Do I follow them? Always or just sometimes? If it is only sometimes? Why?

2.

When I trust my gut, does it work out?

3.

Can I describe the feeling I get when I don’t follow my instincts?

4.

If I follow my instincts and trust myself, and know this is true for me, do I care what people may say?

5.

Do I always know what to do? If yes, then why do I hesitate? If no, why not?

6.

Do I know what I like? If yes, how do I know that? If no, then take some time to figure that out?

We all have moments that would not indicate we could ever become butterflies, but when we take time to cocoon and find our inner instinct; we then have the knowing that we can become what and who we are meant to be. When we look to nature we understand our life better. We all get to a place where we need to grow to move, it takes a significant amount of energy to go against the current, use your energy wisely; being who you are can be easy, if you allow it. “There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it’s going to be a butterfly” ~ R. Buckminster Fuller Deborah Nichol, Theta Healer & Life Coach Healing Heart Wellness

Life is always about moving forward, that is why frogs cannot jump backwards, they can jump side to side and forward but not backwards, and once a caterpillar becomes a butterfly it cannot go back to being a caterpillar. And just as each of us becomes empowered and trusting in who we are, we cannot go back, but we can move forward. Take Fall 2014

Addiction: A Misguided Escape By Shana Whalley

The mind is an amazing thing. It allows us to learn, apply, feel, decide, strive, accomplish, love and give. It also allows us to fret, cower, hurt, sadden, wither, distrust and shut down. All my life I have had a deep passion for music. It brings me so much joy, in the form of happiness, release and knowing that something out there is connecting us, but I have had many days when music was not enough to comfort my mind and addiction took hold. When I was little, my father was my life. He built things, fixed things, and loved movies. He taught me manners and that every person you encounter, deserves a smile. I cherished his seemingly endless lust for music. Old, new, fast, slow, whatever suited the mood. He taught me how to dance and sing like no one else existed. At age of 12, I began to realize that music was not my father’s only passion. He also had a very strong kinship with alcohol. After school I would wait for him to get home from work so we could watch sitcoms and share TV dinners. Suddenly he stopped coming home. Home was the bar across the street. Years of therapy helped me acknowledge my fear of abandonment, but it wasn’t until my own rock bottom that I understood his need for escape. It was now abundantly clear that my parent’s marriage was a disaster and had been disconnected for years, but my father was a hopeless romantic. He craved connection, understanding and an unwavering yearning to share life. I missed my music mentor. In my mid 30’s I began to see my father’s short comings through a sort of empathy. I married at a young 22. Suddenly my relationship was starting to change. I was a dental assistant and had worked my way into surgery through years of dedication. My career was proving to break me. It was filtering into my marriage and I didn’t know how to manage it. We were losing the old us. We began to go out regularly. We had chosen not to have children. Time was our own, so we would hit the neighbourhood pub for beer based marriage counselling. We would drink and fight. We were we good at it. Friends noticed the old me slipping away. I distanced myself from home, going out to music events, having drinks to loosen up. I would stay out all night, coming home with tales about the amazing time I had. This inevitably pushed my husband further away. After a few years of struggling, we separated. He plunged into the well with me, but neither one of us were equipped to deal with the reasons we were running. We drank together, then drank apart. Through counselling, self reflection and years of gaining trust and understanding, we saved our marriage. To this day, we are proud – we did it and we did it on our own. Living a life without a good support system can get the best of you. My mother was not a calming, nurturing influence in my life. I had lost contact with my father years ago, just as he was entering the early stages of Alzheimer’s. His new wife was invested in her financial gains and tucked him away safely. To this day, I search his name weekly in an effort to find closure.

I decided to leave 15 years of dental and leaned into life coaching. I wanted to help other people share their stories and find ways to manifest positivity, but I felt lost. I was a life coach, come on. My husband and I no longer entered into the UFC matches of old, but I still spent evenings relaxing with a glass of wine or two or three, to bury my camouflaged demons within, waking up angry that I had once again relied on old faithful. I was 40. These should be easy years, free of struggle and guilt. Eventually my body decided for me. My Adrenals and kidneys were shutting down. The physical signs were beyond scary, not to mention the mental carnage. Today, I feel clear and strong. I find strength in knowing that I am not alone in my battle and that our surface always has an underlying tale to be told. It is my belief that all true strength is gained through struggle, but sometimes self love is the hardest task to tackle. Tomorrow may feel different. It may feel like all my favorite songs put together could not heal the hurt, but armed with my own coaching knowledge and the help of other wellness professions, I can now envision a very bright light of supportive guidance. Treatments such as craniosacral therapy, neurolinguistic patterning, reiki, nutrition, acupuncture and massage all plant the seeds of mending and rejuvenation. The sun will shine. We are born to live and I want to spend the rest of my life singing and dancing with grace, in the spirit of all that is love. Shana Whalley, Certified Life Coach Back To Basics Coaching

In the year 2001, I was introduced to the practice of singing mantra (chanting) for it’s health and spiritually elevating benefits. Through my practice of Kundalini Yoga (KY), which incorporates chanting into each class, I was exposed to an instructor, who not only did the monotone type chanting as a meditation, that I was used to, but also used melodic mantra music for each posture and invited everyone to sing along! I had never experienced singing in a yoga class before? I found that singing with each challenging exercise, and there are many in KY, really opened up my energy body and it was like I was tapping into an energy reserve I had no idea even existed. After that experience, I began to experiment with using mantra music in the KY classes that I taught and eventually expanded into offering the experience simply on it’s own as a chant circle. I’ve experienced many benefits over the years from having a chant practice and would love to share some of those with you, as well as some advice on choosing the style of chant practice that will serve you. How Does it Work and What Are the Benefits? We have 84 energy meridian points on the roof of our mouth that become stimulated when we chant mantra. The way in which mantra stimulates these points acts as a code for health and wellness in our glandular and nervous systems and aids our immune function.

Trifecta Magazine MIND | BODY | SOUL

When our breath slows down to four breathes per minute, a channel opens between the hypothalamus, pituitary and pineal glands. This opening releases a nectar that rains down vitalizing our nervous system and our immune function. It is said that the effect of chanting becomes exponential with each person that joins in. Each mantra holds within it the potential for a specific transformational state of being. The more awareness one has, the more ability they will have to recognize when this occurs and to be able to embody that state. Many people report feeling uplifted and elevated in mood after a chant circle. Within each chant circle, there is a potential to experience a deeper connection with one’s self as well as the community. Singing in general, tends to open one’s heart. Singing mantra, tends to open one’s heart and heal it as well. Choose a Chant Experience That’s Right for You? Sometimes a good place to “dip one’s toes in the water” is at a larger chant concert event, such as a Deva Premal or Snatam concert at a venue like The Jack Singer Concert Hall. At events such as this, there will be over 1000 people gathered to chant together. The larger event makes it possible to blend in and maybe not feel so conspicuous with your voice, and also have an experience of how the energy becomes exponential when that many people chant together. From there you could try a smaller community chant circle, where 15-30 people gather. These events tend to feel more intimate and will usually be geared more towards your specific process with chant. They also tend to be more focused on building and connecting with a community of like-minded people. Try It Several Times Before You Decide Either way you go, I suggest trying it several times before you decide if it is right for you or not. Sometimes people who never have had chanting anywhere on their radar before, somehow happen upon a chant circle, and they are blown away by the experience and are instantly onboard for the next one. Others take time to warm up to it and work through some of the resistance that arises if they’ve had parts of their voice shut down in the past. Heightened energy in either direction, yay or nay, can be a signal that a chant practice will be of benefit to you. Find a Facilitator That You Resonate With Keep in mind when choosing a chant experience that each facilitator channels something different. Shop around until you find a particular kind of experience that speaks to you. For instance, in the chant circles that I facilitate, there is a focus on opening our heart center, connecting with the innocent and magical aspects of our soul and experiencing both the playful and sacred nature of that through our musical expression. No matter what the intention, each facilitator will have a unique way in which that flows through them to the participants and the space that is evoked. Once you find an experience that serves your soul, then practice it! Reap the benefits of connecting with your whole self that includes the totality of your voice. Each voice sings a unique tune and when put together we become a world in harmony. And that’s a beautiful world to be a part of! Tracy Gawley Owner, Tracy’s Vision

The Yoga Code Ancient Wisdom for a Modern World 10 Universal Principles to Living with More Peace, Balance and Joy By Jackie Dumaine

It all began with a meltdown and what could have been perceived as a full blown nervous breakdown. It was November 2008. The air was cold, the skies were grey - and so was my spirit. Not knowing whether I wanted to live or die, I focused on my breath…knowing that the breath would keep me calm. It was then that I decided that life as I knew it needed to change and it needed to change quickly. I could no longer go on living in the meaningless cycle of a career that was harming my health and my soul. And so, I gave up my six figure job in advertising and traveled to India where I lived in an ashram studying yoga and meditation in the hopes of discovering my self. What I discovered, was so much more… Upward Dog. Downward Dog. Child’s Pose. You’ve heard about yoga. You may have even tried a class or perhaps you’ve been practicing for a while. Whatever your experience is with yoga, there’s no denying its power to create shift and transformation. However, yoga’s transformative power goes way beyond the bending and twisting poses that we see in magazines and yoga studios. In fact, yoga has very little to do with the postures. The Yoga Sutras is an ancient yogic text written thousands of years ago by the Indian sage Patanjali. In essence, this is the bible of yoga and is written in 196 verses, each describing how we can use the wisdom of yoga to end a life of suffering and move towards a life with more peace, balance and joy. Out of these 196 verses, only three of them talk about the physical postures. Only three! Yet in our body and image obsessed world it’s all we focus on, missing out on a huge percentage of what yoga truly is. The Yoga Sutras reveals 10 Universal Principles that were created to be the absolute foundation of yoga. Developed with the intention to be mastered before you ever bust a yoga move, these principles act as a blueprint or “code” for creating a beautiful and inspired life, free from drama. Inspired by these principles, I created The Yoga Code: a step by step blueprint for designing a life that is aligned with who you truly are – free from all the masks that we are asked to wear on a daily basis. The Yoga Code can be applied to all areas of life including parenting, relationships, health, spirituality, business/career and finances.

The 10 Universal Principles of The Yoga Code are like a GPS for your soul, so when you go off course, you have a spiritual map to gently guide you back to the main road. Here is a very small glimpse into each principle along with their sanskrit translation and ways you can begin to immediately implement them into your life:

1

PRINCIPLE #1: KINDNESS & COMPASSION (Ahimsa)

Practice non-harmful actions, thoughts and words towards others and more importantly, towards ourselves. Self-love is the foundation for everything. When we are kind and compassionate towards others (always giving, always helping) yet are not demonstrating that same kindness towards our own spirit, we begin to feel depleted and eventually resentful. How you can practice Kindness & Compassion: Develop what I call “non-negotiable me time” for a minimum of 15 minutes every day, first thing in the morning. This can be in the form of meditation, journaling, or even just sitting in silence with your morning hot beverage and a candle. By giving to yourself before you do anything else, you send a message to your spirit that says: You’re worth it!

PRINCIPLE #2: TRUTH (Satya)

2

Some may say a little white lie isn’t harmful, however when we are doing it continuously it begins to add weight on to our spirit. The most harmful way we lie is when we lie to ourselves. When the person we want to be on the inside is not in alignment with the life we have created on the outside, then we create the suffering associated with not living our truth. How you can practice Truth: Write down 3 areas in which you feel you are not living your truth. It could be your career, relationship, friendships or even the car you drive or the food you eat. What small action can you take today to move you closer to truth in these areas?

Trifecta Magazine MIND | BODY | SOUL

We steal from ourselves when we play small and don’t step into the person we know we can be. When we allow procrastination or self-doubt to keep us from moving forward with our dreams, we rob ourselves of the opportunity to shine our brightest light into the world.

3

PRINCIPLE 3#: NON-STEALING (Asteya)

How you can practice Non-Stealing: Look back on some of the goals you have set out for yourself or perhaps you have a vision board that symbolizes the life you want. Write down the actions you need to take in order to move forward, towards those dreams.

PRINCIPLE #4 - MODERATION (Brahmacharya)

4

Let’s face it, we live in a world of excess. Consumerism, food, alcohol, and even exercise can be taken to the extreme. We’ll use food as an example for this purpose since we can all relate to eating too much. Whenever we pass the point of having “enough” we deplete our spiritual energy. When we learn to see the divine in everything we consume, we will naturally refrain from going overboard. How you can practice Moderation: Go buy your favorite food, something that you would consider a treat. Now take a moment to set the tone. Light a candle, sit down in a comfortable chair. Take a small portion, less than half of what you normally would and “make love” to it. Feel the texture, taste the flavours, chew it until it dissolves and then - stop. Repeat this the next day. Notice how you’ll become satisfied with so much less, allowing yourself to enjoy your treats more often.

5

PRINCIPLE #5 - NON-ATTACHMENT (Aparigraha)

We all carry attachments. Attachments to material objects, to people, to relationships, to beliefs, to our status in the community, to careers, to outcomes. Attachments are simply an avoidance pattern. When we cling to something external, we avoid the inner work that needs to be done. Attachments weigh us down. They are energetically heavy and are often the cause of exhaustion. When we let go of these attachments, we are gifted with an abundance of freedom. How you can practice Non-Attachment: Awareness is the first step towards letting go. Go into your closet and pick out five items that you’ve been hanging onto yet haven’t worn in years. Ask yourself: Why am I still keeping this? What is the story that I’m attached to? Will my life be affected negatively if I don’t keep them? The answer will most likely be no. Pack them up and bring them to a homeless shelter then notice how that feels. Repeat.

PRINCIPLE #6 - PURITY & SIMPLICITY (Saucha)

6

Everything we see, do, say and feel make up the total of our life experiences, and each of these experiences leave an impression and take up space in our body, mind, and soul. When we learn how to simplify our complicated lives, we can begin to create space within

these areas, moving us from a state of contraction to a state of expansion - and this is where the magic of manifestation happens. How you can practice Purity and Simplicity: Surroundings – Declutter your home and create a sacred space that feeds your soul. Mind – Meditate and take time for stillness. A disorganized inner life equals a disorganized outer life. Body – Simplify your diet. Eat foods that are alive and feed your body with nourishment and energy. Do yoga. Soul – Practice forgiveness.

7

PRINCIPLE #7 - CONTENTMENT (Santosha)

Life is a series of experiences that come to us in ebbs and flows. We tend to label these experiences as either “good” or “bad”, causing us to feel low in the bad times and then worry that the good ones will end. Learning to find joy and contentment in our lives regardless of our external circumstances will propel us into a state of calm inner peace, ending our needless suffering. How you can practice Contentment: Practice gratitude. When we spiral into a tornado of negativity and despair we move further away from contentment. The next time you are feeling overwhelmed or in a state of chaos, write down 10 things that you are grateful for in your life. Read this list 3 times and notice how your energy changes.

PRINCIPLE #8 - COMMITMENT (Tapas)

8

Translated from sanskrit, Tapas literally means heat. This principle asks us to hang in there when we feel the fire. It is through our darkest and most challenging moments that we are asked to dig deep, to gather our courage and determination so that we may take another breath. By doing so, we emerge stronger, more confident and ready to leap into the beauty of life. How you can practice Commitment: Take a blank sheet of paper and write down some of the most difficult experiences in your life. The moments where you believed you couldn’t take another step - but you did. What did you learn? How did you grow? Can you see the gift that was hidden deep within your struggles?

9

PRINCIPLE #9 - SELF-INQUIRY (Svadhyaya)

In our desire to create more meaning and purpose in our lives, we must begin with self-reflection. By committing to a path of continuous learning and spiritual growth, we become better able to see our true selves without the various masks we wear to hide our divine identity. In turn, we see others as who they truly are as well. As we heal and nurture our relationship with ourselves, we strengthen our connection with others.

Trifecta Magazine MIND | BODY | SOUL

Photograph by Gary Kissiah

How you can practice Self-Inquiry: For one entire day, use a journal to document your reactions to people and circumstances. What triggers you in a positive way? In a negative way? Observe your thoughts, words, actions and note how it feels when you display them. At the end of the day, go through your journal and make note of anything that stands out.

PRINCIPLE #10 - SURRENDER (Ishvara Pranidhana)

10

Each of the previous nine principles have brought us here. We are asked to show up, do the work as best as we can, then we simply allow the Universe to take over from here. By accepting that there is a force much greater than us at work, we take some of the pressure off ourselves from having to have it all figured out. How you can practice Surrender: The yoga pose associated with this principle is savasana or corpse pose. Upon completing the poses, you are gifted the opportunity to surrender. If you can, attend a yoga class or practice at home and allow yourself a long, beautiful savasana. If the physical aspect of yoga isn’t your thing, then schedule time in your day to pause and do nothing. Let your day and your life integrate. Give it space to breathe so that you may have space to “be”. Jackie Dumaine, Coach, Speaker, Guide Creator of the Yoga Code™

CYNERGY THOUGHTS What Are You Waiting For? By Cindy Drummond Isn’t it funny that we often find excuses to do things like start a healthy eating regime, join the gym, or look for a new job? We tell ourselves, “I will start eating better on Monday”, or “I can’t possibly join the gym this month because I am going away for a week.” We make up endless excuses of why the timing isn’t right to make a change even when we know the only person we are hurting is ourselves. A few days ago, I asked my guy if he was interested in starting a clean eating program with me and of course the dance began. “We are going away for a weekend; it’s probably not a good time to start.” He stated. I looked him straight in the eye and replied, “If we wait for our schedules to clear up completely for two weeks, we will never begin this program.” He had a few more reasons why we should wait, but quickly decided to go along with me. I wanted to make this new program as easy as possible for us to stick to, so offered to prepare all of the food we would need for his first day. When he came over to pick up his meals, he seemed worried. He was concerned that eliminating coffee might give him a headache. “Drink green tea,“ I suggested. He felt certain that going “cold turkey” and not easing into this health plan wasn’t a good idea. While I talked him into giving it a try I remembered the practice of Kaizen.

Meditation: You CAN Do It! By Bev Janisch

Why is sitting quietly by and with ourselves so difficult? If everyone says that meditation is a natural quieting of the mind, then why does sitting for any amount of time “doing nothing” feel so unnatural? These were some of the questions I needed to address for myself when I embarked on the journey of introducing a meditation practice into my life. I think the biggest barrier I needed to overcome when starting to meditate was the belief that sitting in silence meditating was doing nothing and that emptying my mind was the goal. As I began to unravel the mysteries of meditation and started practicing it, I realized that what I believed couldn’t be further from the truth. Sitting in silence is way more active than I ever could have imagined. As I am sitting in silence, practicing techniques to train and shape my mind, I am realizing that I can actually do this. I am also realizing that I actually enjoy it, and feel a whole lot different as a result of spending time each day doing it.

Kaizen was created in Japan following World War II. The word Kaizen means “continuous improvement”. It comes from the Japanese words 改 (“kai”) which means “change” or “to correct” and 善 (“zen”) which means “good”. Traditionall,y Kaizen was a used in business and involves every employee from upper management to the cleaning staff. Every employee is encouraged to come up with small improvement suggestions on a regular basis. This is not a once a month or once a year activity. It is continuous. In Japanese companies, such as Toyota and Canon, a total of 60 to 70 suggestions per employee per year are written down, shared and implemented. In most cases these are not ideas for major changes. Kaizen is based on making little changes on a regular basis: always improving productivity, safety and effectiveness. If Kaizen can be applied to business, couldn’t we use the same method for self improvement? Why not set tiny measurable goals that are easy to achieve. Don’t promise to walk every day for thirty minutes, but instead commit to walking everyday for five minutes. Anyone can walk for five minutes and when you have accomplished this for a couple weeks increase your goal to walk seven minutes a day. Focus on the short term goals only. Don’t worry about five months from now. If you want to eat better, commit to incorporating one small change into your daily routine. Drink one additional glass of water, skip dessert one day a week. Accomplishing these small, yet important goals will have you feeling better about yourself and encourage you to commit to continuous improvement.

This is where the science comes in, and the understanding that a whole lot is going on in our minds and bodies when we are spending time meditating. We are spending time every day giving ourselves time to relieve stress that if left unchecked will destroy our health, our hearts and our spirits. We become a shadow of ourselves, and over time may not even recognize ourselves anymore. Meditation is a powerful set of techniques that when practiced consistently will change many aspects of your life. When I began meditating, I had the stress hormone, cortisol at abnormal levels. I was motivated to get this stress hormone under control so that I could shed a few extra pounds that migrated to my midsection. I was amazed that a simple technique like meditation could have such a powerful effect on my physical health. Within a few months, my cortisol level improved, my midsection began to melt away and an unexpected thing began to happen: I was feeling less stressed and more peaceful on the inside. Until I began meditating, I didn’t really know how to find that place of peacefulness within myself. I also didn’t really know that I wasn’t peaceful because stress and worry had become “normal” for me. I was on autopilot, and didn’t realize that there was another way of being. Like many people, I was wearing my busyness like a badge of honor and behaved as if the happiness would be found in the busyness. What actually happens for the majority of people, is that searching for happiness and peace from sources outside of ourselves never really achieves what we are looking for. We just get busier and more stressed. Trifecta Magazine MIND | BODY | SOUL

One thing that all the spiritual big wigs agree on is that happiness, purpose and peacefulness is always an inside job. We will never find it by searching outside of ourselves. As daunting as it may seem, we must go within to obtain what we most desire: peace and happiness. That is were meditation comes in! Meditation is possible for everyone, even those of you who say that you can’t sit still for a moment and have a Type A personality. I love to teach people to meditate because it quite possibly is the most important commitment you could ever make for yourself and your health. Meditation is a natural process and a simple set of techniques to learn. Different people have different reasons to learn to meditate, however, the benefits will happen in many areas of your life, even if you don’t expect them.

For those of you who decide that you would like to learn to meditate, it can be very confusing. With so many different types and approaches, how do you get started? You get started by signing up for a class, listening to guided meditations online, downloading meditation Apps, and most importantly by putting one foot in front of the other. You just say, “I’m worth it” and join the millions of others who have taken the step and found more peace and joy in their lives as a result. It’s never too early and it’s never too late! create! in the East Village

improving lives through creative expression Something special happens several afternoons a week in a bright airy room on the second floor of the Golden Age Club in East Village. Sunlight pours in through a large bank of windows, while on a nearby counter, a coffee pot hisses its completion next to a platter of cookies and brownies. Artwork fills the walls and a row of long white tables. Formerly used as a storage space, the room has become home to create! in the East Village - a free, drop-in, and inclusive creative program open to East Village residents and Golden Age Club members. For many people, it’s become a sanctuary, a space that offers the freedom to stretch creative wings that may have become rusty with disuse, a safe and welcoming space in which to make new friends, a space where participants find inspiration, acceptance and community. On Tuesday and Friday afternoons, visual artists of all skill levels gather around the big white tables to experiment in a variety of media. Projects are kept intentionally small in scope, so that they can be completed within a two hour time frame. Guest facilitators instruct eager artists in new techniques. Writers meet on Wednesday afternoons, keen to share stories and poems and to challenge themselves with weekly in-session writing prompts. Many create! participants attend both visual art and creative writing sessions, as well as twice monthly Artist Trading Card evenings held at Hear’s My Soul Café across the street. Participants are always free to drop in at will, to work on an unfinished piece or simply to sit in a sunny spot with a cup of coffee. create! in the East Village was started in December 2013 by Wendy Lees – a social worker, artist and facilitator – as a response to the lack of inclusive creative programing in Calgary. Lees was particularly troubled by the scarcity of creative opportunities for marginalized people – seniors, the disabled, people in transitional housing. Single-handedly, and with virtually no financial backing, she set about to establish an arts program that would support well-being and provide a meaningful method of selfexpression, as well as a vital social outing, to those people who most often feel overlooked. East Village - home to several seniors’ residences and within easy walking distance of the Calgary Drop-In Centre and the Mustard Seed - seemed a natural fit. The area’s central location, walkability and proximity to transit meant that it was accessible to many marginalized groups of people. With an influx of new residents poised to move into the area, a community arts program like create! in the East Village would also provide a place for new residents to integrate in a meaningful way with the area’s long-time citizens. It wasn’t an easy start. Just as she was doing legwork and building collaborative relationships, the 2013 flood all but dashed Lees’ dreams of an inclusive arts incubator in the neighbourhood. Then Lees received a call from Paul Bagley, minister of the Lifespring Community Church in East Village, with whom she had previously discussed plans. At the invitation of Nina Saini and business partner Ken Hebert, Lees began offering create! sessions at Hear’s My Soul Café in the Orange Lofts. A few weeks later, Fall 2014

when she was offered a large unused room at the Golden Age Club, she moved the program (with the exception of the popular Artist Trading Cards evenings) across the street. Now well established as both a creative and social hub of the neighbourhood, create! in the East Village continues to grow, both in popularity and scope, with the number of participants steadily increasing. The twice monthly Artist Trading Card sessions are always packed, offering East Village residents a much needed evening out amongst friends. Lasting friendships have formed. With recent participation from the Calgary Arts Development Association and the Canadian Mental Health Association, some of the unique needs of participants can begin to be addressed. create! in the East Village has become increasingly part of the greater East Village neighbourhood. Participants have displayed their work at the Art in April Exhibition at the East Village Experience Centre, participated in LINKages Intergenerational Day with an art show and sale, contributed to the Helping Hands Mural gracing the bridge abutment near the Calgary Drop In Centre, displayed original artwork at the Trinity Place Foundation of Alberta’s 40th Anniversary Party, and are designing an original mosaic for the first-ever East Village Neighbourhood Association Little Free Library. Writers periodically publish work in a freely-distributed ‘zine, while artists gain exposure and proceeds from the sale of greeting cards, a monthly raffle, and art shows. Originally able to operate on a shoestring, Wendy Lees has found that with an increase in demand and in outreach for the program, comes an inevitable increase in costs. Donations of program space, in-kind contributions and limited financial backing have allowed her to establish create! in the East Village. Her personal conviction, that lives are improved through creative expression and that even a few hours of free and inclusive creative programming can make a real difference to the lives of marginalized people and their communities, have allowed that creativity to flourish. Growing Through Pain By Abe Brown I was doing my daily 10K run the other day, when I glanced over at a local playground area. My glance became a gaze, as I saw a thick black foam lining the “floor” of the playground area. Fortunately, I am not the fastest runner on the planet and thus, got a nice long look as I ran by. Under the monkey bars, swings and slides, was a protective padding that looked like it was about two or three inches thick. Apparently, this is the latest fad in playground design and builds. To protect our children from nasty falls and unexpected drops, and the accompanying bumps, bruises and lacerations, we have padded and protected the ground. When they fall, rather than hitting the ground or sand or gravel, they gently bounce off the foam. It is pain-free. They can play, but without worrying about pain. In no way do I mean to pass judgment on this remarkable innovation. I am not a medical doctor, nor am I am paediatrician. Perhaps this “playground protection” is precisely what the doctor ordered. As a parent myself, I can bear witness to the over-riding passion we all have to keep our children safe and protected from harm, and the anguish we feel when they experience any form of pain. However, moving into the realm of adults, there can be no doubt in our current culture, we make great efforts to create a life without pain. It is clear that pain is to be avoided at all costs. Almost every ad and marketing piece speaks about a utopian concept of the “good life” where we can navigate the difficulties of staying in shape and losing weight and planning for retirement and raising our children without pain. In the world of slick marketing and airbrushed images, life, career, relationships, and success all flow with effortless waves of bliss, when you buy this product or that service. All we need to do is sign up for whatever product or service is being sold, offer our credit card number, and we will have all we want in life, but without any pain. The truth is that growth, personal development, and maturity are almost never without pain. The moments when we experience our greatest adversity can often become our season of greatest triumph. When the pain elevates, our development accelerates. When hardship increases, growth steps up. Aristotle said it like this: “We cannot learn without pain”. A few years ago, I went through the greatest period of darkness and pain in my life. I lost much of what I had worked so hard for. I made poor choices and as a result, ended up in a moment of pain and heartbreak that I honestly did not think would ever end. But it did end. And not only did it end, I stand today stronger and more secure than I have ever been. My perspective has been shaped, my attitudes adjusted, my choices realigned, my grace renewed. I am a deeper and fuller person than I was before. And pain was the process. I learned that pain is inevitable. But misery is optional. Pain is an inevitable part of life, and is an integral component of the growth process. I learned things in the place of pain I could never learn in the place of pleasure. How Do We Grow Through Pain? Pain Brings Clarity Of Focus Pain has the interesting benefit of sharpening our focus. I discovered this one day when I was building a fence with a nail gun, and was so comfortable with it that I took my eyes off what I was doing and began to use the nail gun on auto-pilot. Not a good idea! The pain I experienced

trifectamagazine.ca

www.soulvibe.ca when I grazed my hand with the 2 inch nail brought me back to a place of focus and clarity. What was most important became clear, and I was able to finish building the fence without distraction. See in life, sometimes pain is crucial to help us focus again. John Maxwell said it like this: “Everything you now do is something you have chosen to do. Some people don’t want to believe that. But if you’re over age twentyone, your life is what you’re making of it. To change your life, you need to change your priorities.” Pain Puts Things Into Perspective Pain has the important quality of helping us put everything into perspective. We all tend to get a little whiny and to feel sorry for ourselves. Pain helps us to put things into perspective, so we don’t confuse an inconvenience with a legitimate problem. Robert Fulghum said it a little more clearly: “If you break your neck, if you have nothing to eat, if your house is on fire, then you got a problem. Everything else is inconvenience.” See, our culture has conditioned us to actually believe that we can go through life without any struggles, hardships or difficulties. Some of us really believe this, and therefore we are surprised when they occur. Let me be clear. The problem is not that there are problems. The problem is expecting we will not have problems, and then thinking that having problems is a problem. And, being surprised when they occur. Pain helps us understand this. Pain Forces Us To Make A Choice When faced with pain, we are always faced with choices. The choice pain offers is not only the choice between pain and misery, but also between mediocrity and magnificence, average and amazing, apathetic living and passionate living. Pain causes us to recalibrate, look in the mirror, and ask, “What’s most important to me?” Pain forces us to make a choice. And choices are crucial to growth and maturity. Jim Rohn described what I am sharing like this: “We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret or disappointment.” When faced with pain, we rise up and become all we can be, or we shrink back and live far less than our full potential. Pain often comes to help us to close the gap between our full potential and our current performance, but it’s all about our choices. There is one thing that we all have in common. That is... at some point in our lives, we will face adversity. It’s not a matter of if, but... when? I have come to realize that the difference in our success and failure is not chance, but choice. Because when adversity strikes, it’s not what happens that will determine our destiny; it’s how we react to what happens. Pain Attracts Support and Partners One of the most amazing and sweet things about pain is the support, partnership and help it attracts. In no way am I talking about moping around, crying the blues, and being a drain on everyone else. What I discovered, when I embraced my pain, and engaged the process of lifechange the pain was producing, people were attracted to the process and attracted to supporting and partnering with me. At a crazy time in my life in the past, I would try to carry hardship alone, even hiding it from others. Now, it simply is what it is. And, some people, who are designed to help and care and support, come alongside me and help me to get through it. Thanks! The healthy and strong individual is the one who asks for help when he needs it. David Joseph Schwartz said this: “Here is the basic rule for winning success. Let’s mark it in the mind and remember it. The rule is: Success depends on the support of other people. The only hurdle between you and what you want to be is the support of other people.” This is so true, and when we honestly embrace the process of pain, people come alongside to support us. Truthfully, a friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you, just the way you are. Pain brings these friends to the surface. our favourite apps Pain Is Our Greatest Place Of Gain There is no doubt that for most of us, pain is our greatest place of gain. Just like staying in shape is difficult with sweat and effort, so personal growth and maturity is slow when everything in our lives is perfect. Lance Armstrong, , said this: “Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.” The single difference between pain that grows us, and pain that simply hurts us, is our attitude. We need to consciously choose, in a place of pain, to not blame others. To not feel sorry for ourselves. To embrace the pain and the lessons our pain is trying to teach us. As Oprah Winfrey said, “Turn your wounds into wisdom.”

Breeze A fitness tracker that runs in the background to monitor steps, calories and miles. “It knows when you go from a walk to a run,” says Kelly Shelden of Minneapolis, an app developer for medical device manufacturer Medtronic. The key to Breeze is that you don’t have to turn it on.

Jillian Michaels Fitness Motivation Jillian Michaels, the popular trainer on NBC’s The Biggest Loser has a knack for choosing exercises that reap results. Her new app gets top marks for featuring easy-to-follow videos – all starring Michaels herself. Choose from fourteen different exercise categories that are jam-packed with stretches, calisthenics and free weight movements.

The reality is, at some point, we all leave the padded mat of the playground and have to face the rough and tumble and pain of life without protection and at times, without support. Let’s do so, knowing our pain can be our greatest place of gain. And don’t be surprised when life throws pain your way, because when pain elevates, our development accelerates. tooth truth Your Mouth is Part of Your Body By Allison Keating If you had an infection covering your entire forearm would you just let it sit there and fester? Definitely not – you would seek medical attention. Just because you don’t see what is happening under your gums and around your teeth as easily, doesn’t mean that it should be ignored. Periodontal disease is when the soft and hard structures that support the teeth are affected by an inflammatory response in your body. Periodontal disease starts out by gingivitis, red gums that bleed. However, by not having your teeth cleaned regularly, the disease progresses to a level of infection that can eventually lead to tooth loss.

3 Keys to Let Go of Rigid Expectations By Trisha Savoia Letting go of rigid expectations that are affecting you, your family, and those in your life unfortunately isn’t as easy as taking one cure-all pill, and poof!...you now have a life of peace and calm. Wouldn’t that be nice?! It’s not an actionable process, but it’s a mental, emotional, and spiritual process. It starts with making the conscious choice to change your mind…and doing the inner work required to get there. Placing certain expectations on others not only isn’t fair to those you’re placing them on, BUT also causes chaos within your own life. Think about it. What do you go through when someone doesn’t live up to your perceived expectations? Kinda rocks your world, doesn’t it? I speak from experience when I say, this one act of letting go of expectations goes a long way in creating more peace and calm in your life…and your family’s. Of course we are still human, so that’s not to say that we won’t get bitten by the “expectation bug” every once in awhile, but with your new awareness you will catch yourself that much sooner and quickly get yourself back into alignment. So, how can we let go of hindering expectations and find peace and calm: 1. Stop Assuming We all know the old adage – Assume makes an “ass” out of “u” and “me.” And this adage certainly holds true. We play the role of the fool when we assume our way is the only way. The only thing this accomplishes is disrupting our own peace of mind, as well as causing tension in relationships.

The bacteria in your mouth can end up in other places in your body, potentially causing problems. Leaving gingivitis and periodontitis untreated is believed to cause overall health problems due to the inflammation that occurs in the mouth. The bacteria responsible for the oral inflammation is connected to other diseases including heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes. If you are trying to lead a healthier life overall, you need to remember to also take care of your mouth on a regular basis. See your dental hygienist to make that first step in improving your oral and overall health. Reference: American Academy of Periodontology www.perio.org/newsroom/periodontal-disease-fact-sheet

Stop assuming that you know what’s best, and stop assuming your way is the right way. Cause that’s what it really boils down to. You get peeved when others don’t live up to your expectations because you figure you know better, you figure you do better, and you figure your values, priorities, and qualities are superior. How many people have had the “folded towel” fight with their spouse? This is one I’ve heard several times (okay…and I did it too!). Newly married, your hubby lovingly wants to help out (…oooor you expected him to help out), and he goes to put the freshly folded towels into the linen closet, only to be screeched to a halt by a voice barking, “That’s not how the towels should be folded!” Boom! All the good is knocked out of the air by the simple assumption that you know how to fold towels better. Really?!! How presumptuous to assume that our way is the only way! Not to mention, who wants to help out when they can do nothing right. An example I encountered with my daughter involved my assumption of how a clean room should look. There used to be arguments about keeping her room clean. I couldn’t understand that she was okay with the state of her room, since I was the type of kid who spent hours cleaning, rearranging, and reorganizing my room. (I know! I get it…weird! I’ve since let go of that perfectionism.) Believing that communication with our children is important, I finally had the clarity of mind to talk about this with my daughter instead of dictate. What I learned is that she just isn’t as sensitive to the clutter like I am. In fact she even said that it comforts her (yeah, I know…I don’t get it either! BUT I trust that she is able to listen to her own intuition). As soon as I became aware that we simply have different sensitivities, neither being right nor wrong, I was able to let go of my expectation (and

trifectamagazine.ca

in fact embrace her free spiritedness) and allow her some freedom over the environment of her own room. Now that’s not to say, I gave her a free for all and allowed her to trash her room. No. What we did is work out a compromise, both setting healthy boundaries of what we expected from each other. This is where expectations work! …when they’re based on a mutual understanding. 2. Stop Controlling Control is fear-based. It’s an indication that you don’t quite trust how life is going to turn out, so instead of leaving it up to chance you control it. This is not only true in your own life, but certainly also in the lives of the people close to you. You mistakenly believe you are helping them by being so in control. The way to begin to let go of control is to understand that everyone is on their own path, and it’s not your job to dictate and coordinate it. Even if those we love hit bumps in the road, its part of their journey and not up to you to clear the path or fix it. That’s not to say that you can’t be there to support, guide, and even provide advice if it’s asked for, but that support and guidance is to be given without attachment to whether they decide to listen to you or not. When you can let go of your attachment to how things turn out, you then have let go of control and are on the road of trust! A very freeing feeling! 3. Start Loving and Accepting Yep! Everything boils down to love and acceptance. The fact is that when we unconditionally love and accept ourselves we can then love and accept others…regardless of what they are, or aren’t, doing! So, this means it’s not about trying to change the other people who aren’t living up to your expectations. This means that it’s about you changing you. It’s about you learning to love and accept you. People, your children included, will respond to the energy you are sending out. If you are setting expectations based on fears that come from your own lack of self love and acceptance, they will feel rigid and unreasonable. Most will respond to this energy with resistance. If you are setting expectations based on understanding and openness that come from self love and acceptance not only of yourself, but also of others, the expectations will be met with a desire to want to reach for them. The resistance is dropped because they receive the energy of complete love and acceptance, so they know regardless of any mistakes made they will not lose your love…it’s truly unconditional.

A healthy diet should include a variety of foods rich in B-vitamins, DHA and omega 3 fatty acids, essential components for a healthy brain and nerve system. If you are unable to get adequate amounts of these nutrients in your meals (dark green leafy veggies, walnuts, fish, etc.), consider a customized vitamin regimen that may help supplement what your family may be lacking. Back to school means back to school bugs! Protect your family by boosting your immune system naturally! Greater focus and attention relies on a healthy posture, an essential ingredient for a strong immune system and abundant energy! The spine houses a bundle of nerves called the spinal cord, a communication highway between the body and the brain. Back pain, neck pain and headaches may be symptoms of poor posture from overloaded backpacks, sitting all day, or even pre-existing underlying joint stress and inflammation such as from an old injury or a sedentary lifestyle. Bad posture interferes with your brain’s ability to electrically signal your body. Did you know the joints in your upper back house nerves that control your heart, lungs, stomach and the glands responsible for fighting infections and for producing energy, namely the thymus and thyroid glands? Is it a wonder that back to school is correlated with an increased incidence of childhood asthma, allergies, digestive complaints and low energy, symptoms of spinal stress from heavy backpacks and sitting all day? Hypersensitivities, digestion complaints, tremors, and problems with reading, writing, focus and attention may also be signs of deeper stress in your nervous system. A back to school family visit to a chiropractor is an important step to make sure your “wiring” is healthy. Regular spinal checkups enhance a strong learning foundation and enable your brain and body to be more efficient, thereby reducing the symptoms of aging and breakdown. Remember, you do not need a referral to see a chiropractor and most insurance plans cover the cost. Finally, make exercise a priority! In a review study of the effects of exercise on improved cognition in the journal Psychonomic Bulletin and Review, research showed exercise enhanced brain activities such as task switching, selective attention, inhibition of inappropriate responses, working memory capacity, and updating capability (i.e., the ability to learn new things). Sedentary people are prone to diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers. Physical activity reduces susceptibility to these diseases while improving memory. Don’t have time? A McMaster University study on high intensity, short burst exercise found that there were greater benefits working out at 90% intensity for 5 minutes three times per week than exercising daily at lower intensities. Follow this simple recipe and you too can look and feel years younger while increasing your IQ at the same time! Alma Nenshi, B.Sc., D.C.
