from the publisher. Who would have thought that when we chose Rise Up to be the theme for the fall issue, we would end up in the middle of a global phenomenon; our world is on fire. With massive blazes burning right here in Canada, in the United States, Russia, South America, and across Europe, this is the time to think about what happens after the flames settle down. To rise up is to be in the midst of a crisis and come out stronger and better than ever. It's a life changing challenge, but one that can be met head on with heart and spirit. Hopefully, you haven't been faced with the threat of real fires in your community, but if you have we are sending strength and hope. If your fires are figurative ones (internally or externally), this is your time to make a plan, fight back and rise up! Cindy Drummond

2) Emotional Regulation Emotional regulation is the ability to regulate or adjust your emotions. Our goal is not so much to control our emotions, but to channel them. When we channel our emotions, we can still express ourselves and vent our feelings, but we don’t do it in a random and unhealthy way.

THE ROAD TO RESILIENCE

By Abe Brown

How can two people grow up in the same home, and yet end up completely different? Janet and Jessica were sisters, just 2 years apart. Jessica was younger, and always looked up to her older sister Janet, because she saw her as so very bright, talented and beautiful. Sadly, both young ladies were raised in environments which would easily be described as abusive, painful, poverty-stricken. As they grew into adulthood, they each went down diverging paths; the older sister Janet went from one abusive relationship to the next, ending up severely drug addicted, and continues to this day in pain and brokenness. The younger sister Jessica went through her share of struggles and trials, but found a way to cultivate the skills necessary to maintain a stable job, build a stable family, and add significant value to the world around her. When she was asked how she created such different outcomes than her older sister, though both raised in the same home, Jessica said this: “I am not what happened to me. I choose what I become.”

Emotional regulation is so important because feelings so often drive behaviour, and feelings don’t just “go away”. So, when we learn to regulate our emotions, they can serve and support us, rather than the other way around. To regulate our emotions, here are a few tips: • • • •

3) Healthy Perspectives Our perspective matters. A healthy perspective supports and empowers us, rather than disempowering us and dragging us down. Resilience is all about cultivating the healthy perspective of Maya Angelou, who said that, “I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it.”

Zig Ziglar said that, “You were not born a winner. You were not born a loser. You were born a chooser.” If this is the case, then we need to choose very well. What gives us the power to make choices that stick is resilience.

The easiest way to develop a healthy perspective is to always be open to new perspectives. With a closed mind and a padlocked heart, we are certain to have unhealthy perspectives.

Resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. It is the ability to spring back into shape, and can be described as elasticity or toughness. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from disruption, stress, change, or challenging life events in a way that provides the individual with additional protective and coping skills than prior to the event itself. The truth is that life doesn’t get easier, and it won’t get more forgiving. We get stronger and more resilient. So, how can we cultivate resilience? And, what conditions help us build resilience?

4) Supportive Relationships Human beings are social animals, hard-wired to connect with others. Research across a wide variety of disciplines consistently demonstrates that social support enhances productivity (we get more done!), psychological well-being (we feel more complete and fulfilled!), and even physical health (our body breaks down less!). In fact, George Vaillant, Harvard professor of psychiatry, who directed the world’s longest continuous study of physical and mental health, when asked what he had learned from his 40 years of research, said that, “the only thing that really matters in life are your relationships to other people.”

1) A Positive Attitude Our attitude determines our altitude, and so if we want to fly high, we need a positive attitude that will support high altitudes. If a person is content to fly low, no attitude enhancement is necessary. In our daily lives, this means that we need to forcefully weed out negative self-talk, and ensure that our operating narrative is positive, along with the stories we tell ourselves.

Cultivating supportive relationships is all about social competence. Social competence is the ability to produce positive responses from others, thus establishing positive relationships. This is often about reaching out in an emotionally and socially intelligent way. People skills are crucial.

Part of this is how we manage “failure”. People often tell themselves a story that failure is final, and that our performance is an indicator of our actual worth and value. In my experience, failure is a part of life, and it is very helpful to see failure as feedback. Failure teaches us how to succeed in the present and the future.

trifectamagazine.ca

Deepen your level of self-awareness. Learn to self-soothe. Practice letting go. Often our emotions control us because we hang on when we should let go. Regular rest and exercise along with a healthy diet.

5) Active Spirituality Healthy spirituality lifts us beyond the idea that this life

we were seeds.” The resilient have survived many burials on their way to blooming.

and its present circumstances make a complete picture. When all we see is what is front of us, resilience is difficult, because the trauma and pain of the present moment can be overwhelming. A broader perspective of spirituality helps elevate our mindset so that we develop the capacity to endure the setbacks and struggles of the present moment, because we view them as temporary obstacles.

General George S. Patton said this: “I don’t measure a man’s success by how high he climbs, but how high he bounces when he hits bottom.” How can two people grow up in the same home, and yet end up completely different? When Jessica said that, “I am not what happened to me. I choose what I become”, she was choosing the path of resilience. Resilience is captured well in what Robert Jordan, in The Fires of Heaven, said: “The oak fought the wind and was broken, the willow bent when it must and survived.” The good news is that resilience is something we can develop and cultivate, following the road to resilience described here.

A healthy starting point is the realization that there is more to this life; that transition and change is a part of this world. If this is the case, then being flexible and even agile is the only approach that makes sense. 6) A Sense of Empowerment Life is full of controllables and non-controllables. People who lack resilience feel disempowered, not only by what they can’t control, but also by the things that they can. People on the road to resilience have a strong sense of their own identity, and an ability to act independently. They feel like they can exert control over their environment, and where they can’t, have effective coping strategies to mitigate this. Resilient people exhibit planning that facilitates seeing themselves in control, and resourcefulness in developing coping strategies, and in seeking help from others. The essence of empowerment for those with resilience can be seen in this Mexican Proverb: “They tried to bury us, but didn’t know that

THE HAZARDS OF TOO MUCH POSITIVE THINKING

By Alice Wheaton

Positive thinking with no grounding in reality creates happy underachievers. They are happy because they placate themselves with good intentions, magical thinking, and hope. Hope is always about the future. Even salespeople who approach an abundant market place with rose colored glasses and a belly full of hope will starve to death. The mayday moment comes to light when the candidate, armed only with the zeal of positive thinking, fails to reach their target and is unable to evidence positive results. After giving a presentation to a management group, I received the following e-mail missive. In a few words, it told a memorable story: “Alice, your comments about addiction to a positive mental attitude really hit home this week. After thinking about your message I decided to demote my VP of Sales and Marketing from his position to that of an account manager. I realized that he had developed and established a consistent pattern of delusional thought about forecasts and more importantly results. His positive thinking has had a negative impact on my company’s bottom line.” For the record, I want to say that hopeful people are not alone. Much the same as many of those who sit on the board of directors, or are CEOs, executive team members, or sales managers, they are often afflicted with the selfsame addiction to positive thinking. This is because they, like the general population, have been bombarded with the virtues of positive thinking and have had the experience of being chastised by their peers for daring to discuss a reality that is less than favorable. I am not advocating negative thinking. I am advocating reality/critical thinking. We all remember the demise of high-tech companies that failed to meet their brilliant forecasts. Eventually, someone must be accountable, the piper must be paid. It is far better to receive bad news and seek to create a strategy to solve a problem, which might in turn lead to positive resolution, than to have happy ears and go under. Fear of economic insecurity causes economic insecurity. While speaking at various conferences conduct research with almost all of the sales groups that attend and ask this question: “What will your sales manager say if you tell him or her, “Boss, I think we are going to lose this order?” Summarily, their response is, “My sales manager will reprimand me by saying If you think you will lose it then you will.” What utter nonsense! It takes more than negative thinking to lose a sale. In fact, I encourage salespeople to maintain about a 20% level of paranoia and fear of losing the sale at all times. This will ensure that they have the vigilant attitude necessary to qualify and re-qualify the deal. In other words, ABP…always be paranoid!

Positive thoughts are helpful, but they must be supported by appropriate action. is bringing together local restaurants to take a bite out of hunger.

Sales reps need to strategize with their manager, but often his/her fear of repercussion, economic insecurity, or the combination of poor management and training skills, will stand in the way. A sales leader interested in perfectionistic, ever positive, mental gymnastics, without a basis in reality, is guaranteed sales failure. Top performers, the Big Game Hunter and Closers will not stay engaged in such an environment.

The Calgary Food Bank challenged Chefs to create a signature dish using at least two items from our most needed list. Don’t pasta up on these amazing dishes! Try one (or more) from October 1-15 and a portion of the proceeds will be used to purchase fresh food for the Food Bank.

Happy underachievers have the potential to become happy overachievers when they face reality and put a plan centered on action into place. The universe is organized around action. Our planet spins and rotates, the seasons change, and life is continually evolving. I cringe when I hear a salesperson say, I am putting the energy out there, because what one thinks about comes to pass. Yes of course, positive thoughts are helpful, but they must be supported by appropriate action. Thinking, without appropriate action, will not make it so! Occasionally life delivers a wake-up call: a moment of change, and we are never the same again. A major loss or hitting bottom often precedes an epiphany. At such a time, our defenses are down, our minds are open, and unforeseen opportunities may seem to suddenly appear. In truth it is our very willingness to do the work that actualizes the opportunity. Life-changing moments depend on your response to the wake-up call. Whereas being stuck in negative thinking is not the answer, neither is being stuck in positive thinking. The idea is to entertain both but not to be owned by either. This way you will have a strong base in reality and the results will show.

ATHLETICS AND PERFORMING BETTER WITH MASSAGE

By Jill Burk

Athletics, work, school and all our other responsibilities call out to us differently in the fall. All these demands see so effortless and less vital in the summer. But as the days start to shorten, school resumes, sports teams are picked and before you can blink injuries, stress, aches and pains (not to mention the cold) have settled back in. In order to excel at anything, recovery continues to be a vital part of routines. Rest and even better structured, planned rest is the key to allowing our brains and our muscles to process new learning, and to be ready to build on previous sessions. It is hard, sometimes almost impossible to fit one more thing in, but recovery in study after study is the key to high productivity, excellence in sport and efficiency and accuracy in solving problems. Author Michael Gelb who wrote “How to think like Leonardo Da Vinci” has asked thousands of people –When do you get your best ideas, again and again the answer is somewhere disengaged and relaxed, no one ever says at work. The reason the greatest athletes in the world get regular massage , often more than once a week is that it aides dramatically in muscle recovery, not just helping with injuries, both healing and preventing, but it gives the muscle the rest and recovery needed so that the next time the body is tested, strength and flexibility are more easily achieved. And in the modern world with all its time and attention demands so is one thing you should do that feels good. Massage therapy should feel great, not just physically, but it releases endorphins and serotonin that make you feel mentally good, taken care of, nurtured and mentally and physically refreshed. For those of us addicted to multitasking this truly ticks a lot of boxes.

When the brain is faced with complex tasks, negative thinking hurts your ability to process information and think clearly. Thinking negatively about your problems or the problems of the world, not only doesn’t help solve anything, it actually makes it harder for you to think of a helpful solution.

ELEVATE YOUR ATTITUDE

By Cheryle Cote

At this time of so much political strife and so many natural disasters in the world, it is quite easy to get caught up in all of the negativity relayed in the media. We hear so many negative stories on a day to day basis, not only locally, but on a global scale. We exist in a society of information overload. News is not limited to local newspapers, radio and television like our parents were raised with. Now we have CNN, Satellite Radio, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat, etc, etc, etc. We have apps on our devices that tell us ongoing news, event posts, natural catastrophes and so much more. Now when something happens anywhere in the world, we usually know about it within minutes.

Limit unhealthy mental habits like worrying. Avoid becoming absorbed by repetitive negative mental habits. Negative thoughts about yourself and the world can suck up time, drain your energy, and trigger feelings of anxiety, fear, and depression. Improving our brains by eliminating negative thinking is possible. Replacing negative thinking with positive thinking is like training your brain just like you would a dog. You give a dog a reward for good behavior and your brain is similar in that positive thoughts create pleasure in the brain, which is a reward. Go to a funny movie, take a walk on the beach, listen to music or read a good book to help shift your attitude. Once we feel pleasure, we want more of it, so give your brain positive thoughts, learn to de-stress and keep it on a steady input of self-rewarding pleasure. Be grateful for the good things in your life. Meditate, pray, or simply take a moment to pay attention to what is positive and beautiful as you go about your day.

All of this information, which is usually of a negative nature, can overwhelm us. We think we are coping and filtering out the information as it comes into our mind, but something else is going on. As the negative information becomes repetitive, it begins to filter into the subconscious mind and can color our attitude.

We don’t have to be glued to our devices every minute of the day. We could learn from our parents or grandparents by existing without a cell phone or tablet, even if it is for a part of the day. Go out in nature and ground yourself by walking on the earth or enjoy a beautiful sunset.

When we worry or have negative thoughts, our brains think that there is an immediate threat that we have to take care of. As a result, the Amygdala, a part of our brain that deals with our fight, flight or freeze response, kicks in to deal with the threat.

Consciously practicing positive thinking, unplugging from news media regularly and de-stressing will help you to elevate your attitude. You will feel like you are contributing to improving your mind, your life and your health in a meaningful way.

The thalamus is responsible for sending sensory and motor signals to the rest of the body but it does not understand that negative thoughts aren’t the same as real danger. When you think negative thoughts, the thalamus assumes that it needs to prepare the body to flee. As a result, our bodies experience real stress symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, elevated blood pressure, and a state of heightened arousal.

Humans are evolutionarily wired with a negativity bias. Our minds naturally focus on the bad and discard the good. It was much more important for our ancestors to avoid threats than to collect rewards: An individual who successfully avoided a threat would wake up the next morning and have another opportunity to collect a reward, but an individual who didn’t avoid the threat would have no such opportunity. So the human brain evolved to focus on threats instinctively. Our brains are pre-wired to respond to negative events, words and behavior more quickly than we do to the positive. When we think positively and are more relaxed, our brain assumes that everything is under control and no defensive action is needed.

I believe life is music, a melody we create everyday. I also believe that all of us are musical beings and that music and sound are our essence. I feel passionate about selfempowerment, but also about healing human beings and the environment and made it my life mission to inspire audiences through music and words. As a ‘keynote’ player, I tour and set the tone at conferences and workshops that focus on healing, self-help, health and wellness or spirituality. I perform interludes between speakers and also conduct specific healing and selfempowering programs such as ” Creating Harmony Within“, “Be the composer and conductor of your life symphony” and “Playing life by heart”.

Inspired by extensive classical training and a lifelong kinship with Nature, my music harmonizes body and mind, equalizes brain and heart and acts as a powerful catalyst, re-connecting audiences with their inner Self. My new book–– 7 Keys to Serenity–– is a musical perspective on creating harmony within, inviting readers to embrace the art of conscious living. It is meant to inspire readers to become aware of their own power to create a healthy, vibrant inner environment by implementing a strategy of self-care, leading to authentic happiness and well being. RISING UP FROM FINANCIAL SET BACK

By Wendy Olson-Brodeur

You’re broken down and tired Of living life on a merry go round And you can’t find the fighter But I see it in you so we gonna walk it out And move mountains We gonna walk it out And move mountains

The first problem I see is that people are mostly living unconsciously. Living day to day, paycheck to paycheck or not paying attention and then when circumstances change, they have a hard time facing the music and making financial adjustments. Understanding your situation and becoming knowledgeable is key. Knowledge is power…ful.

And I’ll rise up I’ll rise like the day I’ll rise up unafraid I’ll rise up….

Case in point. At a dinner recently, a lawyer was boasting about a case that would cost the client in the range of $100K and leave the individual with nothing. My question is,” Where is the professional to help with this emotion?” Where referrals were made to financial neutrals? Parenting specialist? Mental Health professionals? No guarantee, but many times I have witnessed that if we involve a mental health professional at the beginning, the individual can work through their own issues, and once that is in control, perhaps the other partner will engage and the rest of the negotiations go much better. In the end, they avoid having issues with their children now and into the future, stress for themselves, time, and ultimately money.

The song and lyrics written by Yves Larock and Pascal Brunkow, currently being sung by Andra Day. She sings about rising up unafraid. Easier said than done. I would say however, where there is a will, there is always a way. In my experience of educating, advising, mediating, and collaborating, there is always a better way. The key is getting the right process and professionals in place to help you. Too often people default to what they know. The problem with that is “You don’t know what you don’t know” Times are changing when it comes to dealing with financial situations and issues, fear takes over and it can be a huge challenge.

3. Understand your money past, present and future. Many people and families have never done any financial planning including budgets or retirement planning. Understand the difference between things we NEED, our GOALS, and the many WANTS we may have. Become conscious about the differences.

9 THINGS YOU CAN DO: 1. Know you are not alone. You do not need to walk down this path alone. Find the strength to reach out. You may be faced with a financial challenge as a single person, a soon to be married, married, separating or facing divorce individual or couple. Find a professional who works in the area you need help with, as they will understand what you are facing and can often direct you to the resources that will help you. Get a couple opinions, so you know you are on the right path for you. I hear every so often that the professional is doing more for themselves than the client. Listen to your intuition, as it is more often right than wrong.

Knowing your money personality can also shed some light on how you deal with money or why you are in a situation you are facing. Are you a saver, a spender, a person who avoids, believes it will just happen? Are you controlling or being controlled? What’s the history? Are you prepared to face it? Understanding the basics of your financial picture is a critical step. Too often I hear people who have had regrets because they either did not ask for direction or were too fearful to face it. Don’t just settle and regret it later, understand and be conscious of your situation so you know what it all means going forward. Good, bad or ugly.

Case in point. I was referred to a lady who was facing a difficult divorce and huge financial issues. She was referred by her lawyer, realizing this situation had more consequences long term. Our discussion was about the financial options she had available, none right or wrong but all with consequences, pros and cons. She is better served by a team.

Case in point: You are in the middle of negotiating your divorce settlement. You have been awarded equalization of the registered investments, but should you accept the locked in plan or the spousal or perhaps the pension? These plans come with rules and taxation issues. Knowing the difference can have a lasting consequence.

2. Get educated. Get help to triage your situation. Use ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) first. Engage a team. My recommendation is get professional help determining what’s best for you and your situation. I use the analogy of going to the emergency hospital. The first thing that happens is they ask you questions and get a sense of what is going on

trifectamagazine.ca

4. Get in touch with how you FEEL about your money situation? Is it BALANCED? Is money a controlling factor in your relationship? Are you involved in the management or planning of the money and

household? If not, you need to at least know the basics. Get involved. Ask questions. You need to have a balanced plan.

family, friends. Once you have had an experience with a professional who has helped or hindered, share it. We can only learn from one another. Write a testimonial so others know the experience.

When you are in balance, it includes looking out for yourself. You need to make time and money available to look after yourself. When we do a financial plan, we talk about the things that make you happy and bring joy. We find the money to make sure we can do some of it. The beauty today, is there are many programs, books, professionals who are trained to help.

SELLING IN A SKIRT

Women want to be treated equally... Not identically

Excerpt from Walking on the Glass Floor By Judy Hoberman “The other day I was asked to name the most influential person was in my life. That was easy. It was my grandmother Sadie L. Flaum (and when you asked her name, the “L.” was always included). Grandma Sadie told me I could be and do whatever I wanted, and it did not matter that I was a girl. Recently I was reflecting on the depth of her impact. Not only did she encourage me to follow my dreams, she inspired me to do the same for thousands of other women through my company, Selling In A Skirt. In our celebrity-obsessed culture, it can be easy to lose perspective on what makes a positive role model. Merriam-Webster defines role model as “someone who another person admires and tries to be like; a person whose behavior in a particular role is imitated by others.” While you may find you are drawn to different role models as you grow, I believe the best role models—and the best leaders for that matter—share fundamental attributes. Qualities that never go out of fashion such as: integrity, excellent listening skills, openness, confidence tempered with humility, passion, vision, talent, perseverance, resilience, ability to inspire, and generosity.

single mother, as I was, I was the one she tried to mimic. If a woman was offered a promotion, I was the one she reached out to for “the real scoop.” Although I had not set out to be a role model, I became one. Was I perfect? No. But I always did my best, and I made a point to be available and accessible. I listened to, empathized with, and included other women. I supported them and encouraged their successes while remaining true to my values. You may find it helpful to widen your lens when searching for a role model. There may not be one person who can meet all your needs. If you have multiple challenges, you may be best served by finding several people, each with their own expertise or niche.”

Some of us need search no further than our own families to find strong, positive role models. While other women might benefit from seeking role models at work, in their industry, or in the news. With the Internet, we can learn from and connect with inspiring women around the globe. Every day women are making tremendous strides in science, technology, finance, engineering, medicine, education, business, and entrepreneurship. There is no shortage of fascinating women.

Judy Hoberman, Speaker, Coach, and Author Walking on the Glass Floor sellinginaskirt.com

Life is a constant give and take. Sometimes you will hunger for a role model, while at other times (or sometimes simultaneously) you will be a role model for others. When I was at the height of my career in the insurance industry, I was one of a handful of women in my company. I stood out. As I found my rhythm, I became a top producer, widened my network, and thrived in the business. This drew even more attention to me. If a woman applied for a position at my firm, I was the one she looked up to. If a woman was a

Catalyst

FOR MINDFULNESS thecompassionatemind.ca

I am passionate about meditation and mindfulness because for many years I was stuck in my head and had no idea how the worry, stress and busyness were impacting my emotional and physical health. It was ironic that learning how to deal with my mind enabled me to get out of my head and find a sense of inner peace, which had always eluded me.

Practices such as meditation and mindfulness are simple and yet powerful tools to cultivate the connection, vitality and purpose that many of us are longing for. These practices teach us how to show up fully in our lives in ways that foster connection and compassion within our relationships, our communities and ourselves. Bev Janisch MN is the founder of The Compassionate Mind. Bev offers meditation training and workshops to individuals and groups who would like to experience the life changing benefits of mindfulness. Bev has a Masters degree in Nursing and is a certified meditation and mindfulness teacher. Visit www.thecompassionatemind.ca for more information and to download a guide and recording on setting up your own practice starting with five minutes a day.

When I began meditating I had no idea that sitting down for five minutes a day and closing my eyes would open up a whole new world for me. It was the inner world that I was ignoring by being so focused on the outer world. As a wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend and nurse I had no idea who I was beyond the roles that defined me.

Bev Janisch The Compassionate Mind

My meditation practice opened the door to who I am at my core beyond all the labels that defined me. It started with my ability to settle my nervous system and get out of “fight or flight” in order to develop a new “normal” of inner peace. I began to develop a deeper awareness and appreciation for what I needed in order to thrive in my life. I learned how to honor my feelings, read cues in my body and align with my higher purpose.

CynergyThought s By Cindy Drummond Money the root of all evil some say. We love it! We hate it! We lose sleep over it! We obsess over it! We hoard it! We spend it! But why? Of course we need money to live, but is there actually a formula to determine how much money we need to be happy? Are we happier when we have more money? There have been times in my life when I have had enough money and there have been times when I have struggled to make ends meet. I have been doing a bit of experimenting with my own money and financial outlook lately and here's what I know. I live in a city that has been badly hit by a recession, or a economic downturn if you want to be politically correct. I work at the local food bank, so I see on a daily basis hundreds of people who are down on their luck. I feel grateful that I have a job. I recently heard someone say, "I am fortunate enough to have a job that allows me to go to work everyday because I can't afford not to." At this moment in my life, I am earning my living, so when I am approached on the street by a homeless person, or at the turn light as I am stopped on my drive home, I ALWAYS give money. It may be the loose change in my cup holder of my car, it might be some toonies or loonies at the bottom of my purse, or a five dollar bill if that's what I have and here's what I have found.... When I feel that I am lacking enough money or trying to hoard my money, unexpected bills come up or some other financial crisis that puts me back into the red, but when I generous without judgement; the money comes back to me every time. Every time! It's really simple! I am asked. I help. I am rewarded. Just a thought...

We'd like to hear about your money thoughts! submissions@trifectamagazine.ca

EMOTIONS AS PASSIONS

By Krystyna C. Laycraft, PhD

One year ago, in the summer 2016 issue of Trifecta, I wrote about the role of emotions in our lives. I wrote that the experienced emotions play a significant role in our decision-making and subsequent actions. They mobilize our cognitive resources, increase our awareness, signalize approaches to our problems, and make us more perceptive and sensitive to the external world. In this issue, I want to continue this topic and show that emotions can be base for our passions that constitute our world. In his beautiful book, “The Passions, Emotions, and the Meaning of Life,” Robert Solomon writes that emotions are intelligent, cultivated, and conceptually rich engagements with the world. They are the source of most of our values and the driving force behind a life; a life lived as a work of art, a life filled with richness, beauty, and meaning1. As an example for this statement, I present a story of one the participants of my studies2, Krista, an 18-year-old–girl and graduate of a charter school in Calgary. Her passion was the circus arts and contortion. She created her performance pieces by herself. With great enthusiasm, Krista explained how she worked on these performance pieces.

“It is usually some little spark of inspiration, whether it is a piece of music or some words, or very often something visual. And from there, then I start to have ideas.” When Krista was preparing the piece for the audition at the National Circus School, the starting point was the painting of the seventeenth-century painter Johannes Vermeer, Girl with a Pearl Earing. “Ever since I was little I was drawn to this painting. It stirs my imagination. It is so mysterious. At the same time I have a feeling that I can’t describe when I see it.” Krista read the novel and watched the film of the same title. “I enjoyed the novel and the film as well. And there was a piece of music I played over and over in my mind, so I decided to use it for my act. So I already had music for my act, then I spent two or three months or so just let to sit and just allowing any idea to come.” Krista started keeping a notebook and writing things down because she had trouble sleeping at night without this outlet. She desperately wanted to evoke some special emotions.

Trifecta Magazine

MIND | BODY | SOUL

“Actually, I realized that I spent more time on the concept than I did on the movement. After about five months, I realized that I had to start working on the movement because this is an act I will be performing. I have to get out of my head and get into my body. And for a little while I have to turn off my brain and all the ideas and just allow my body to move. I just turn on music and just whatever comes to my body, just allow that happen.”

emotions that are extremely essential to creativity. Interest by combining with acceptance creates resourcefulness that entails excitement in the face of mental challenges. Resourcefulness has a substantial cognitive element as it involves thoughtfulness in effort to overcome obstacles. Krista became a resourceful person and possessed an ability to open her own psyche for observation and through observation and analysis she gained knowledge of herself.

Finally, after a long process of working on the piece, Krista was ready to perform.

“I have this strong drive and try to learn how to cope with it in a more positive way…Frustration leads me to be persistent and to try again…I find that I have to be more patient to myself.”

“When I perform, it is really me, and it takes what I train very hard to do and brings so much creativity into it. I really connect with the audience and express myself doing something that I love doing.”

Acceptance joined with surprise creates curiosity reflecting a person’s effort to maintain an optimal level of mental arousal and contributing to task-persistence. Krista as a curious person, sought out new information, took interest in it, and tried to learn as much as possible about it. Joy, together with interest, creates an emotion of enthusiasm, eagerness, or optimism. Joy combined with acceptance creates love, passion, and finally joy connected with surprise creates delight. Krista loved the circus art and was passionate about it.

Interest, Joy, Acceptance, & Surprise During the first phase of creativity, Krista experienced emotions of interest, joy, acceptance, and surprise.

Interest opens up a boundary of various experiences. It is evoked by the perception of novelties emerging outside of one’s self or from within like imaging, memory, or thinking. The painting Girl with a Pearl Earring captivated Krista, held her attention and maintained her focal awareness.

As I show above, Krista’s creativity was intertwined with strong emotions of resourcefulness, curiosity, enthusiasm, passion, and delight, which became her internal world, her reality, her engagement with the outside world, and the meaning of her life.

Joy moves individuals upward and outward, motivates them to approach challenges, and keeps on working. People experiencing joy are more imaginative and creative. Krista enjoyed working on her pieces by researching, reading a novel, and watching a film.

Laycraft, K.C. (2012). The development of creativity: A study of creative adolescents and young adults, Doctoral dissertation, University of Calgary

Next, acceptance, as an emotion, means acceptance of one’s experiences as they are without any attempt to judge or to evaluate them, without comparison to past experiences or anticipation of the future. Krista accepted the process by becoming immersed in it and then allowing any ideas to come to her mind. In this phase, Krista became “open” and “receptive” to her external and internal environment. She became a participant and an observer of the ongoing processes of experience. These three emotions - interest, joy, and acceptance – create the state of openness and receptivity that allows her creativity to emerge.

The piece of music appeared as a surprise for Krista. It began with her sudden attention that then changed into astonishment. She played this piece of music over and over again, so she decided to use it for her act. After the music was chosen, Krista spent almost five months allowing ideas to come to her mind. FALL DETOX

Excerpt from Nourish: Ayurveda-inspired 21-day Detox By Stephanie Hrehirchuk

A LIFE AFTER DIVORCE

Fall and spring are the key seasons for detox. Fall is the time of year when we prepare the body for winter. It is the season of vata, queen of the doshas. Her elements are air and ether; her properties are dry, light, mobile and cool. Fall’s coolness may feel welcome for pitta people and the mobility from fall’s winds provide movement for kapha; however, a dry and windy fall may also find monkey mind on the rise.

By Patrick Murray

Scattered thoughts, increased mental chatter, restless sleep, and dry skin and nasal passages give vata’s increased presence away.

feels she has caused all of the hurt in the family by saying

Grounding, wet and warming practices may assist in bringing you back down to Earth if you feel blown away by fall. Self-massage with oils of sesame or sweet almond infused with warming spices like cinnamon, ginger, clove, or a chai blend. Soups and stews, roast veggie medley with carrots, onion, beets, and sweet potato or squash, all make nourishing meals for fall. Basil, ginger, and sage, or cinnamon and cardamom are warming additions to your dishes. Additional suggestions for fall: •

Exercise in a smooth, steady way, generating warmth but not heat.

Calming and warming stones for vata are garnet and rose quartz.

Vata benefits from essential oils that are both earthy and warming: rose geranium, basil and vanilla

A geranium hydrosol, or vanilla bean-infused water, is a simple and hydrating way to ease both skin and mind on a windy fall day. Keep your hydrosol in the fridge and spray often. Close your eyes and spritz over your face, inhaling the delicate aromatherapy. Or spray your entire body after a shower or bath.

Vata benefits from an earlier bedtime and sufficient rest, as well as the addition of quality fats such as avocado, olive oil and coconut milk/oil to meals. Avoid rough, dry food such as popcorn and crackers.

Take time to meditate each day, stilling the body and mind. Focus on one task at a time, get plenty of rest, stick to a routine, and keep life simple as you transition with the seasons and flourish this fall.

A friend of mine has just gone through a divorce after 24 years of marriage. It is difficult to watch her. Some days she seems to be doing well, being social, a smile on her face, while on other days she confesses that she feels responsible for the break up between her and her alcoholic, philandering husband. She enough is enough. She feels she does not know how to trust men anymore and she says she does not know how to let someone love her anymore and, while searching for a new relationship, she seems to have attracted others that are not equal to who she truly is in maturity. While close to this family, I am still able to take an outside look at the situation. I’m not in it. It is much easier to stand back and view the situation rather than be blinded by all of the moving parts while inside of it. I know for certain that she has done the right thing by leaving. I know her husband is a life-long alcoholic not wanting help and blaming others. I know he has embarrassed the family on countless occasions because of inappropriate comments. I know now that his affair was one in which he was planning to make permanent and leave her once the kids were older. I also know that kids are not stupid. If she stayed, they would have looked back and been bewildered as to why she did not leave and let their father continue his behaviour, hurting the family and hurting her. It’s been over two years now and yet she continues to have these feelings that are hurting her now. I am trying to help my friend as much as I can, but I do not want to overstep. If she would allow me, here are some of the things I would like to say to her. Perhaps it might help somebody else, too. You are not your past. That relationship does not define you in any way. Stop blaming yourself. He would not go to counselling and did not want help. He made a decision. You were forced to make one in return. Your children will and do respect you more for leaving rather than staying and letting him walk all over you.

Just over 18 months ago, we made a decision that we wanted to grow old and be as healthy as possible during our prime years in life. After many years of drinking and eating whatever we wanted, we began to notice our physical quality of life deteriorating…and we were only in our 40’s! Without your health, you have no wealth. We decided as a couple to help and support each other to become the best versions of ourselves we could possibly be, both physically and mentally. Without growing as an individual and doing some personal development along the way, a physical transformation is meaningless.

Catalysts FOR HEALTH

The combination of physical and mental transformation is lethal. Belonging to a community of like-minded individuals has allowed us to push ourselves to places we never thought possible. We now have a balance in our lives that allows us to enjoy the finer things in life, yet continue to thrive in good health. It’s been fun, exciting and incredibly rewarding. We look and feel better now than we ever did in our 30’s. We would love to have you join us and see what you are truly capable of! If not now, when? Yours in Health, Angela & Jason Schoenfeld

5 SIMPLE WAYS TO EASE MIGRAINE PAIN By Dr. Alma Nenshi, Family Chiropractor

Most people associate migraine headaches with intense throbbing head pain lasting several hours to days, and sometimes accompanied by nausea, vomiting, visual disturbances, vertigo and sensitivity to lights, scents and sounds. Migraines are actually the result of increased electrical activity in the brain. Neurologically, they uniquely affect sensory perception and motor control of the body and can include a variety of symptoms that may or may not even include a headache. So what are some common stresses that trigger migraine headaches? •

Neurological stresses like excessive sensory stimulation from glare from the sun, loud noises, certain scents (whether pleasant or unpleasant), neck or head traumas, infections, intense physical exertion and chronic poor posture. Calgarians in particular are prone to headaches when their body can’t adapt to the pressure changes from the Chinook winds.

Chemical stresses include food triggers like red wine, caffeine, aged cheeses, chocolate, monosodium glutamate (MSG), dyes, pickled or fermented foods and nitrates found in deli meats. Skipping meals, fasting and hormone fluctuations may also cause migraines as do certain medications such as acetaminophen, aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), codeine, hydrocodone and birth control medications, just to name a few.

Emotional Stress - Did you know over 90 percent of all chronic health challenges including cardiovascular disease, strokes, cancer, hormone imbalances, weight problems, accelerated aging, diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases, are all related to the inability to deal with stress? Both getting too much or too little sleep can also trigger migraines.

Migraines need to be properly diagnosed by a health care professional. If you ever feel like you are experiencing the worst headache of your life, it may be a medical emergency. Don’t take any chances, contact 9-1-1 immediately.

Here are 5 easy ways to help you manage migraine symptoms at home:

relief from completely powering down their electronic devices (cell phones, computers, lights) and relaxing in a dark and cool room. 2. Drink some water! Staying hydrated has many health benefits, and for migraine sufferers, it can mean the difference between a manageable headache and a debilitating episode. Drink half your weight in ounces of water and non-caffeinated beverages everyday and don’t forget to add an extra 2 cups of water for every cup of coffee you drink (yes this goes for decaf too!) 3. Smell some peppermint. Whether it’s candy, essential oil or a peppermint teabag, a little at the start of your migraine will go a long way in helping to ease your symptoms.

STRESS INDICATORS Constant, chronic, low levels of physical, chemical, emotional and electromagnetic stress, left unresolved, leads to damage, degeneration and disease.

4. Ice versus heat. Use heat to relax tense muscles in the early stages of your migraine before the throbbing starts. For a full-blown migraine, choose icing the affected areas for no more than 10 minutes at a time. Anything longer may trigger a reflex reaction that may increase the throbbing pain.

Sleep Difficulties / Insomnia Fatigue / Low Energy Anxiety / Depression / Overwhelm Memory Fog / Forgetfulness High Blood Pressure Weakened Immunity Digestive Issues Irritable Bowel Weight Gain / Belly Fat Chronic Pain Food Cravings / Addictions Headaches Feeling Judgmental or Negative Cold Hands or Feet Hormonal Imbalances Poor Concentration Racing Mind Mood Swings Accelerated Aging

5. And now the best kept secret of all, when you have a full-blown migraine, soak your hands in hot water! This simple action will trigger your nervous system to direct blood away from your core, thereby easing the pressure and throbbing symptoms in your head and buy you time to get to your chiropractor for a proper assessment and treatment to ease your pain. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you felt overwhelmed, devastated and inadequate to face the challenges that are about to hit you head on? I have to admit, in the spring of 2006 that was exactly how I felt as I found myself head down on a board room table, crying inconsolably and paralyzed by hopelessness and fear. I was at the lowest of low points in my life and there was no evident way out or up. I had missed three major ‘flags’ that would have warned me I was heading toward ‘burnout’ at warp speed and was about to crash.

save me as I’d frequently forget what I needed to put on the list. I relied on my administrative assistants and those around me, (thank goodness for these angels as they did help immensely) but I still had trouble finishing my own sentences (due to memory loss), let a lone complete the demands of my job, thus further lowering my self efficacy.

3. A constant feeling of hopelessness. I was living at a very rapid and rushed state and my life felt hollow and hopeless and I continually felt exhausted, frustrated and wished I would disappear from the face of the earth. A devastating situation for sure. Strange enough, even after being diagnosed with depression and severely struggling for months, I continued to plod on. Not forward, just onward. The result, a year’s medical leave from my teaching position - time away as I desperately ventured to regroup and recoup.

So how does one “Rise Up” from a situation that appears beyond repair? I’ll preface my answer by saying each of you are creative, whole and resourceful and will find your own unique steps, but for now, here are three concepts to consider:

joyfulendeavours.com

1. Ask for help and be willing to receive the assistance that comes. You may not even know what help you need, however by making it clear that you need help it will appear! Fortunately I had the most amazing next door neighbour at the time of my demise. I reached out for help and she took time to comfort, console and connect me to people who could help me heal. Among the people whom I was introduced to were a Cree Elder, a naturopath and a Theta healing practitioner. I had no idea they even existed. My point - ask for help and be willing to receive it as you never know where the assistance will come from.

Are you longing for improved wellness? a happier relationship? more energy? work life balance? a more fulfilling career? joy and laughter in your life?

2. Be gentle on yourself. You might be puzzled by your suffering and feel frustrated, mad, embarrassed and want to know why this is happening to you (I’m not 100% sure that you need to know), but I do know that you need to trust you will get through this. Take one day at a time and allow yourself the time and space to rejuvenate, heal and explore your needs and honour them. Speak to yourself and treat yourself the same way you would a good friend. After all through out your life you are the only person who will always be with you. It is very important to be kind and caring with yourself.

3. Know that you are ENOUGH and live a wholeheartedly. According to researcher, author and speaker, Brene Brown, Wholehearted Living means; “To engage in our lives from a place of worthiness. To cultivate the courage, compassion and connection to wake up in the morning and think, No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am ENOUGH. It is going to bed at night thinking, “Yes, I am imperfect and vulnerable and sometimes afraid, but that doesn’t change the truth that I am brave and worthy of love and belonging.”

THE GIFT

By Alison Chudleigh It was my realization that day, that it was I who needed him, not he who needed me. I needed him to show me what compassion truly is... A candle in the dark. And through all the unkindness's of honking vehicles and impatient passersby, he locked his sights on the lightness of life, appreciating and giving offering. Gratitude saturated both of us while we held hands for a lingering moment. Seeming as though the world had stopped and warmth replaced the frigid cold, I awakened to my own blessing. And so I now choose to follow his lead and honor him today ( as he did me) for his contribution to the "LIGHTNESS" within our humanity. My proverbial "flower" returned.

If I wanted to tell you about compassion, perhaps I could tell you the story of a mystery man I met many years ago. A homeless man who stole my heart. On a cold and wintery day, in late October nearly twenty years ago, I was a passenger in a friends car, driving down a busy inner city street, headed for a cozy little coffee shop where we could catch up on each others affairs and escape the bitter temperatures. I never dreamt that day would change me so profoundly.

As we look on in fear and uncertainty to our current world in turmoil and devastation, perhaps we can remember to allow our hearts to be wide open at every opportunity, so that our compassion and kindness can fill the spaces where fear, hurt and hopelessness prevail. And instead reach out to one another as though family, to share in the burdens of life in what ever ways we can. To lighten the loads for others as often as possible.

As we were pulling up to an intersection, you could see the gusting winds blowing debris across the road. A man with a long white beard and torn clothing proceeded to cross the street while pushing a grocery cart full of his life's possessions. The icy curb sent him toppling over his cart and into on coming traffic. I was so ashamed and horrified as I saw car after car drive around him barely slowing down. Some vehicles were even honking and waving fists. I darted out of the car and I ran to assist this poor man laying in the street.

Let this story be confirmation that through our giving, it is we who receive. And it will ripple through all of eternity that LOVE can win the war on fear and that hope, faith and peace can take its place, evidenced in the eyes of those whose lives we've touched, or who have touched us.

With little thought I reached down to help him get his footing and then to gather his strewn belongings back into his cart. He must have hurt himself with a fall like that, I suspected. And sure enough through the rip in his jeans I could see his leg bleeding.

The homeless man and I were, no doubt, one in the same that day, two unique versions of the same necessities. Both needing and both giving!

I looked to his face only to be astounded by his beautiful smiling eyes locked into mine. My heart ached as he seemed completely unaware of the pain, the cruelty and the biting air that was his lot.

This is my story of compassion. A story I hope will ignite all who read it to let love overshadow all else. And as the weather inevitably turns to cold once again, let our hearts travel the great distances to those who suffer around the world and in our own back yards. NOW is the time to stand as ONE, in all our differences, SHARING from the depths of our hearts and LOVING without limits, as purveyors of LIGHT in all the darkest places, until inevitably, there are no more dark places.

All I could think to do next was give him something, anything, everything. As I frantically looked down to search my pockets for money or what ever I could give him to comfort myself that he will somehow be ok. I found a few coins and a crumpled up fiver. Hardly enough to make up for the inhumanity shown him. Gesturing forward to give him my meager offering, I looked into his eyes once more to see this gentle spirit, unjaded by the darkness I assumed was his life. He stood there with his hand already open, holding an absolutely impeccable stemless red carnation, he had obviously pulled from his tattered pocket. I was astonished how this flower showed no evidence of damage due to the cold or the confines of his pocket. A most perfect flower!

"Love and Compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive." ~ Dalai Llama Alison Chudleigh EFT Advanced Practitioner Tap2Happy tap2happy.com

"WHAT, he gives ME a gift", I thought with utter amazement! "Where could he have gotten this flower, and why would he give it to me?" I reasoned that he must be an ANGEL. This poor man whom presumably didn't have a warm place to sleep or a warm meal to sustain him, without a moments hesitation, gave me his treasured flower. His kindness broke something in me that day. Between his unwavering joy filled stare and his remarkable generosity, he broke my heart wide open. His gift remains safely in my journal to this day. Every petal dried and immortalized in my pages, that I might never forget his sincere and untainted kindness toward me. I couldn't help feeling the flower was a metaphor for the perfection of the moment!

In my teens, I had a passion for beauty and wellness. I began doing skin care consultations, makeovers, and bridal makeup in 1988, but lacked the confidence to follow my dreams. Instead, I did what I was told was the “right” thing and went into secretarial work. This led me to becoming an HR Professional for 15 years. During those years I developed my skills building my own HR, Training & Coaching business. I came to realize the importance of pursuing my passion after many life changing, eye opening experiences and being the target of bullying.
