Hail Caesar! (12A) Dirs: Ethen Coen, Joel Coen USA 2016 TBC With: George Clooney, Scarlett Johansen, Josh Brolin Eddie Mannix is a Hollywood "fixer" smoothing out problems on an upcoming film called Hail Caesar starring a famous actor played by George Clooney. But when the actor is kidnapped and a ransom demanded Mannix is the fall guy charged with rescuing him. The first full-on Coen Brothers comedy in six years. Hallelujah!
Hail Caesar
The Big Short (15) Dir: Adam McKay USA 2015 2hrs 10mins With: Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt The financial meltdown of 2008 was caused in the main by American banks making bad housing loans. But before the great crash a small number of businessmen sensed what was coming and called the banks’ bluff. Sounds dull? Not a bit of it. The Big Short uses wit and some genius casting to make the whole thing exceptionally entertaining.
The Big Short
Rams (15) Dir: Grímur Hákonarson Iceland 2015 1hr 33mins Subtitled With: Sigurður Sigurjónsson, Theodór Júlíusson Both hilarious and tragic Rams is about two farmer brothers who haven’t spoken to each other in decades yet whose prize-winning sheep are the pride of Iceland until their flocks are threatened by disease and the government’s desire to destroy them. Can the brothers reunite and save the day? Rams
Truth (15) Dir: James Vanderbilt With: Cate Blanchett, Robert Redford, Dennis Quaid In 2004 the American TV station CBS ran a story concerning then President George W Bush about the way he falsified his military record. Unfortunately the news-team who broke the story didn’t get all the facts right and heads duly rolled, including famous anchor-man Dan Rather. This intense, compelling drama captures the fall of all involved. Truth
The Assassin (12A) Dir: Hsiao-Hsien Hou Taiwan/China/HK 2015 1hr 45mins Subtitled With: Qi Shu, Chen Chang, Satoshi Tsumabuki Voted the Best Film of 2015 by critics in Sight & Sound magazine, The Assassin is a martial arts saga like no other. Set in 8th century China a mysterious professional female assassin is sent to kill a former lover in a far flung province. Utterly amazing. The Assassin

Grimsby (15) Dir: Louis Leterrier UK 2016 1hr 23mins Stars: Sacha Baron Cohen, Mark Strong, Rebel Wilson When two orphaned brothers become separated as kids, one of them grows up to be a professional assassin while the other turns out to be a thick-as-a-plank football hooligan. Once reunited their wild worlds collide and spills, thrills and a riot of challenging jokes make Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest comedy essential viewing.

The Revenant (15) Dir: Alejandro González Iñárritu USA 2016 2hrs 36mins With: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson Along the US-Canadian border of 1820 a fur trapper is mauled by a grizzly bear and left to die by another hunter. But by sheer force of will the injured man takes on the elements and finally confronts his sworn enemy. A speedy return for the Oscarwinning Revenant and a second chance to marvel at the sheer physicality of this astonishing film. The Revenant
Bone Tomahawk (18) Dir: S Craig Zahler USA 2015 2hrs 12mins With: Kurt Russell, Matthew Fox, Richard Jenkins Quentin Tarantino gets a proper run for his money in this audacious Western horror film featuring a still be-whiskered Kurt Russell as a local sheriff leading a posse into cannibal Indian territory to rescue the town’s female doctor. Tremendously acted and entirely believable even as the carnage becomes ever more jaw-dropping. You have been warned. Bone Tomahawk

High Rise (15) Dir: Ben Wheatley UK 2016 2015 2hrs With: Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons The combination of J G Ballard and edgy director Ben (Kill List) Wheatley works to shattering effect in this fullon adaptation of Ballard’s 1970s novel about a block of flats where extraordinary things become commonplace. Tom Hiddleston plays a doctor at the centre of all the chaos where sex and violence form the basis of a new society.

Dirs: Duke Johnson, Charlie Kaufman 1hr 30mins With: David Thewlis, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tom Noonan Michael is a grumpy “motivational speaker” with little faith in other people yet whose life is miraculously altered when he meets a shy woman staying in his hotel. This simple tale is made exceptional however by three things: it’s filmed in stop-motion animation; has a perfect script from Charlie ( Being John Malkovich ) Kaufman; and a message about love that hits the bullseye.

The Witch (15) Dir: Robert Eggers Can/USA 2015 1hr 30mins With: Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie In New England in the 1630s an extremely God-fearing family set up home in the wilderness far from other settlers. But when the mother’s new-born baby disappears the family begin to turn on each other with terrible consequences. Honestly the best psychological horror film in years, though more magical than gory, see The Witch and be truly amazed.

Eddie the Eagle
Eddie the Eagle (PG) Dir: Dexter Fletcher UK/USA/Ger 2016 1hr 45mins With: Taron Egerton, Hugh Jackman This perky biopic of Michael “Eddie” Edwards, better known to history as Eddy the Eagle, marvellously evokes the stunned disbelief of a mocking world when he entered the Winter Olympics in 1988 and won his heart’s desire. Celebrating a lovable underdog with a never-say-die attitude to life it’s nice to see a movie that’s so positive about hope.
Disorder (15) Dad’s Army
Dir: Alice Winocour France 2015 1hr 38mins Subtitled With: Matthias Schoenaerts, Diane Kruger, Paul Hamy Vincent is an ex-Special Forces soldier suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder; but he’s a handy man to have around and takes a job protecting the family of a Lebanese arms dealer. Initially over-sensitive about keeping everyone safe Vincent is soon at full stretch when the family is viciously attacked. A sharp and very credible French thriller.
Disorder
Eye In The Sky (15) Dir: Gavin Wood UK 2016 1hr 42mins With: Helen Mirren, Alan Rickman When an officer in charge of a military drone operation to capture terrorists sees her mission escalate from "capture" to "kill" regardless of the human cost, the ethics of remote warfare become desperately blurred in this tense and timely drama. This was the late, great Alan Rickman’s final acting appearance, a fitting end to a fine career.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (12A) Dir: Kirk Jones USA 2016 1hr 34mins With: Nia Vardalos, John Corbett, Michael Constantine It’s been 13 years since Ian and Toula got married in the box-office smash My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Now the couple are caught up in a second ceremony when it turns out that Toula’s parents never actually tied the knot. This broad and breezy comedy about the wild ups and downs of a close-knit Greek/American community is definitely worth a second look.
Ran (15) Dir: Akira Kurosawa Japan 1985 2hrs 42mins Subtitled With: Tatsuya Nakadai, Akira Terao, Jinpachi Nezu A digital re-issue of Akira Kurosawa’s Oscar-winning masterpiece is an event to savour. Based on Shakespeare’s King Lear but with the warlord’s sons playing his squabbling children Kurosawa (then well into his 70s) created a feudal Japan in epic style with some of world cinema’s most unforgettable images. Dheepan (15) Dir: Jacques Audiard France 2015 1hr 55mins Subtitled With: Jesuthasan Antonythasan, Kalieaswari Srinivasan Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Festival this fascinating human drama follows the fate of Dheepan, an ex-Tamil freedom fighter who believes he’s found a better life in Paris only to be pitched back into a war-zone of drug-dealers and displaced persons. Florence Foster Jenkins (PG) Dir: Stephen Friers UK 2016 2hrs With: Meryl Streep, Hugh Grant Florence Foster Jenkins was an aging wealthy woman who dominated the New York social scene during the 1940’s. She had money, style, and such a kind, attentive husband she could have anything she wanted: including hiring the Carnegie concert hall to sing to 3000 troops. Except she didn’t have the one thing all singers need: a decent voice. A superbly entertaining comedy-drama of the very highest order. The Big Short

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (15) Dirs: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa USA 2016 1hr 52mins With: Tina Fey, Margot Robbie, Martin Freeman Based on the real-life experiences of a naïve American female cable-TV journalist who thought it would be a breeze to cover the war in Afghanistan, this riotously funny comedy about something most of us feel is beyond a joke cleverly gets under the skin of all concerned. With IED’s by day and wild partying by night, the West’s role in the conflict was never better pilloried. WTF?
Sing Street (12A) Dir: John Carney Ire/UK/USA 2016 1hr 46mins With: Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Aidan Gillen, Maria Doyle Kennedy From the makers of the brilliant Dublin-set musical “One” comes this engagingly likable movie set in the 1980’s when a young boy forms a band to impress the girl he loves but bites off more success than he can chew. Hugely enjoyable with an infectious sense of Irish fun, if you only see one musical this year – make it this one!
