Inside Llewyn Davis (15) USA/France 2013 Dir: Joel & Ethan Coen 1hr 45mins With: Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund, John Goodman, Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake

It’s 1961 in Greenwich Village, it's cold outside and Llewyn Davis (Isaac) has Inside Llewyn Davis no winter coat. Hustling couches to sleep on, playing folk gigs at the Gaslight, trying to squeeze some royalties out of his manager, the world is not a forgiving place for a man with talent who won’t suffer fools. This is not made any easier by the fact that Davis is an asshole, a point regularly and vocally reinforced by his folk-singing (only) friend Jean (Mulligan). Mining a similar feel to the other musical work from the Coen Brothers (Oh Brother Where Art Thou) Inside Llewyn Davis revels in its feel for the era, and a sense of the period conjured in a palette of greys, browns and amber. T-Bone Burnett keeps the soundtrack rolling, with the film treating Davis’ own songs (as co-written with Marcus Mumford) with respect, but not an undue reverence. Shotthrough with Coens’ trademark black humour, and an impeccable supporting cast, Inside Llewyn Davis is an evocative period portrait of a glass-half-empty guy and the travails of paying your dues.

“The Coen brothers’ funny, melancholic elegy to early 1960s folk music is as cinematically nimble as it is musically rich” B F I L O N D O N F I L M F E S T I VA L 2 0 1 3

Only Lovers Left Alive (15) USA 2013 Dir: Jim Jarmusch 2hrs 3mins With: Tom Hiddleston, Jon Hurt, Tilda Swinton, Mia Wasikowska

Shifting between the vibrant exoticism of Tangier and the grey streets of Detroit, Only Lovers Left Alive follows the romantic path of reclusive musician Adam and his beloved Eve (Hiddleston and Swinton), a pair of centuries-old vampires reuniting after a spell apart. Taking up residence in Adam’s disordered suburban house, the undead duo gorge themselves on each other’s company, until the arrival of Eve’s feisty sister, Ava (Wasikowska), looks set to disrupt their nocturnal utopia. The sweeping, ageless romanticism of Bram Stoker’s Dracula mixing with the elegant mystery of Claire Denis’ Trouble Every Day, Jarmusch’s meditative vampire film is a shrewd and sensual subversion on familiar gothic mythology. With their poised and controlled performances, Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston and Mia Wasikowska (not to mention John Hurt as Christopher Marlowe) each bring an effortless cool to proceedings, while underneath the layers of style is a foundation of rampant emotion and desperate longing. Filled with FILM 4 musical and literary references, all presented with Jarmusch’s typically deadpan style of humour, Only Lovers Left Alive joins the likes of George Romero’s Martin , and Abel Ferrara’s The Addiction as a defining example of the existential vampire film.

“Possibly the finniest and certainly the coolest vampire film around”

Bastards (18) France 2013 Dir: Claire Denis 1hr 41mins subtitles With: Lola Créton, Vincent Lindon, Chiara Mastroianni, Michel Subor

Acclaimed director Claire Denis's jagged, daringly fragmented and darkest film is a genuinely contemporary film noir inspired by recent French sex ring scandals involving men of wealth and power. Vincent Lindon (Mademoiselle Chambon) stars as Marco, a sea captain gone AWOL to avenge his brother-in-law's suicide and to rescue his estranged sister and his teenaged niece (Créton from Goodbye First Love); Chiara Mastroianni (A Christmas Tale) is Lindon's married lover, who has sold her soul in exchange for the security of her young son; and the remarkable Michel Subor is her husband - a sleazy financier who is the very embodiment of an evil beyond comprehension. Denis takes the viewer into the very heart of darkness in her most unsettling film yet, an unforgettable and thrilling commentary on late capitalism.

The Grand Budapest Hotel (15) UK/Germany 2013 Dir: Wes Anderson 1hr 40mins With: Ralph Fiennes, Jude Law, Bill Murray, Ed Norton, Tony Revolori, Tilda Swinton, Owen Wilson

Winner of the Silver Bear Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival this year. Wes (Moonrise Kingdom) Anderson’s latest sees the action transported to 19th century Vienna. Recounting the adventures of Gustave H (Fiennes), a The Grand Budapest Hotel legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa (Revolori), the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend, the film is a madcap adventure that involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune - all against the back-drop of a suddenly and dramatically changing continent. With a stellar ensemble cast that includes Anderson ‘favourites’ Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brody and Tilda Swinton – the film shows that Anderson has lost none of his idiosyncratic charm. Her (15) USA 2013 Dir: Spike Jonze 1hr 53mins With: Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson, Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix

How will we relate to one another as technological enhancements proliferate? How will we think of ourselves? We’re in L.A., in the pretty near future – it could be next year, or next month. Theodore (Phoenix), a lonely guy nursing a broken heart who makes his living writing "personal" letters for others, invests in the newest personalized computer operating Her system. Her name is Samantha (Johansson). Theodore and Samantha fulfil one another by design and by temperament, their relationship grows, and… becomes complicated, as relationships do. Meanwhile, love is in the air and every sensitive man in L.A. is dating his operating system. Director Spike Jonze has always excelled at fashioning poetically idiosyncratic worlds that are just ahead of our own, but with the audacious, funny and sweetly haunting Her he breaks new ground. Expertly assisted by Phoenix and Johansson’s lovely voice, a magical pairing, ably abetted by Amy Adams and Rooney Mara.

The Armstrong Lie (15) USA 2013 Dir: Alex Gibney 2hrs 2mins With: Lance Armstrong, Reed Albergotti, Betsey Andreu

Academy Award®-winning documentarian Alex Gibney ( Taxi to the Dark Side, Mea Maxima Culp a) began recording cycling superstar Lance Armstrong back in 2009, until filming was unexpectedly halted following the much publicised doping scandal. Gibney’s documentary took an unexpectedly dark and complex turn when he resumed his study of the athlete in 2013, following Armstrong’s public confessions on The Oprah Show. In this unflinching account of a sport ruled by money and power, Gibney’s unprecedented access to Armstrong, his ex-teammates and the infamous Doctor Ferrari, combined with exhilarating archive footage of cycling races, draws an intricate portrait of an extraordinarily ambitious man who would stop at nothing to win. An inspiration to many, cancer survivor Armstrong, who won the Tour de France seven times, has been adored and subsequently vilified in equal measure. The Armstrong Lie

A New York Winter’s Tale (12A) USA 2013 Dir: Akiva Goldsman 1hr 57mins With: Jessica Brown-Findlay, Jennifer Connelly, Russell Crowe, Colin Farrell, William Hurt

Starring Colin Farrell (Total Recall), Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey), and Oscar winners Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind) and Russell Crowe (Gladiator), A New York Winter’s Tale is set in a mythic New York City, spanning more than a century, the story of miracles, crossed destinies, and the age-old battle between good and evil, the film is a genre-defying tale based on the Mark Helprin novel of the same name. One night in winter, Peter Lake (Farrell) orphan and master-mechanic, attempts to rob a fortresslike mansion on the Upper West Side. Though he thinks the house is empty, the daughter of the house, Beverley (Brown-Findlay) is home. Thus begins the love between Peter Lake, a middle-aged Irish burglar, and Beverly Penn, a young girl, who is dying. When he discovers that he has the gift of reincarnation, he sets out to save Beverley’s life and embark on a new life together.

Labor Day (12A) USA 2013 Dir: Jason Reitman 1hr 51mins With: Josh Brolin, Gattlin Griffith, Kate Winslet

Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air) switches from the breezy, satirical approach of his previous work into a deeper, darker Labor Day exploration of emotional isolation that elegantly weaves together elements of thriller, melodrama and coming-of-age drama to create this unexpectedly sumptuous and romantic film. Henry (Griffith) is a sensitive teenager preoccupied with caring for his reclusive mother Adele (Winslet) who has retreated from the world, broken-hearted and fearful, after the breakdown of her marriage to Henry’s father. On a rare shopping trip together they encounter a wounded man, Frank (Brolin), who uses a mixture of charm and intimidation to inveigle his way into the family home. All is not what it seems and, over the course of the Labor Day long weekend, this accidental encounter changes all their lives irrevocably, propelling Henry from adolescent awakening to adult awareness. Creating a moody atmosphere drama that draws on both the lurking menace of Night of the Hunter and redemptive magic of Beauty and the Beast. Labor Day features terrific performances from its cast; in particular Winslet, offering a grown-up fairy tale at its most dangerous and compelling.

Starred Up (18) UK 2013 Dir: David Mackenzie 1hr 46mins With: Rupert Friend, Jack O’Connell, Ben Mendelsohn

Starred Up

David Mackenzie ( Young Adam, Hallam Foe) changes direction with a tough prison drama shot in a real Belfast gaol. Eric Love (O’Connell) is a borderline psychotic juvenile admitted into an adult prison for which he would normally be considered too young. However he’s been ‘starred up’ for his uncontrollable violent behaviour. On arrival, the prison system does its best to break him down with strip searches and solitary confinement. Eric reacts with ever increasing violence placing him on a collision course with the more established prisoners who run the system from within, and particularly his long-term incarcerated father. It’s a gritty, frightening, claustrophobic film which provocatively examines prison life positioning itself somewhere between Scum and A Prophet.

Following the taut Oscar-winning divorce drama A Separation, Iranian director Asghar Farhadi returns with another stunning study of modern family life, this time set on the outskirts of Paris where Ahmad (Mosaffa) arrives from Tehran to finalise the end of his tempestuous marriage to estranged wife Marie (Bejo). The Past, however, is not simply a variation a theme; it is a gripping, emotional detective story, as curious Ahmad investigates the events of the previous four years, his interest piqued by Marie’s sulky teenage daughter Lucie (Burlet), whose strange contempt for her mother’s new boyfriend Samir (Rahim) sets the story in motion. Farhadi’s cast is note-perfect, especially The Artist’s Bejo, playing beautifully against type as a flaky suburban mother of three.

Under The Skin (15) UK/USA 2013 Dir: Jonathan Glazer 1hr 47mins With: Scarlett Johansson, Antonia Campbell-Hughes, Paul Brannigan

Adapted from Michel Faber’s novel and directed by Jonathan (Sexy Beast, Birth) Glazer Under The Skin is an intoxicating, strange and sublime sci-fi tale of a female alien who roams the Scottish highlands with a taste for human flesh. On Scotland's lonely back roads, a beautiful woman (Johansson) stalks unwitting men. Her identity and her motives unclear, she is simply, and quite literally, a sexual threat. Her eyes deadened but alert, she prowls night streets and deserted locales in a white van, seeking male victims. More could be said about the plot, but it's best to allow Under The Skin to reveal itself. From its arresting first image - a pure, white pinpoint of light — it expands outward to become an increasingly absorbing mystery. It's also a Rorschach test for everything one might fear about relations between men and women. With shades of Kubrick and Hitchcock in his depiction of sexuality, Glazer coolly captures the predatory impulse rather than simple heat, proceeding at its own rhythm. Accumulating one eerie detail on top of another, serving up sometimes baroque encounters between predator and prey, the film stealthily makes its way to an incredible, disturbing conclusion.

The Double (15) UK 2013 Dir: Richard Ayoade 1hr 33mins With: Jesse Eisenberg, Wallace Shawn, Noah Taylor, Mia Wasikowska

The Double

From innovative filmmaker Richard Ayoade comes this tale of Simon (Eisenberg), a browbeaten office clerk working in an ominous government organisation. With his colleagues failing to recognise him on a daily basis, Simon fills his empty days with dreams of colleague Hannah (Wasikowska), but any encounter with her leaves him tongue-tied and mortified. Undermined and undervalued everywhere he turns, it seems that his directionless life couldn’t get any worse, until one day his exact double gets a job at his company. As his confident and ambitious doppelganger climbs the corporate ladder, attracting the attention of Hannah on his way, our hero sinks further into mediocrity, and possibly even madness. Transposing the action from 19th century Russia to a surrealist modernday America, this quirky adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s celebrated novella is a distinctly contemporary update of a literary classic. As with his acclaimed debut Submarine, Ayoade’s idiosyncratic visual approach comes laced with a dry wit that perfectly compliments the inner dysfunctions of his characters.

Twenty Feet From Stardom (12A)

Academy Award Winner 2014 Best Documentary

USA 2014 Dir: Morgan Neville 1hr 31mins With: Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer

Millions know their voices, but no one knows their names. In his compelling new film Twenty Feet From Stardom award-winning director Morgan Neville shines a spotlight on the untold true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. Triumphant and heartbreaking in equal measure, the film is both a tribute to the unsung voices who brought shape and style to popular music and a reflection on the conflicts, sacrifices and rewards of a career spent harmonizing with others. These gifted artists span a range of styles, genres and eras of popular music, but each has a uniquely fascinating and personal story to share of life spent in the shadows of superstardom. Along with rare archival footage and a peerless soundtrack, Twenty Feet From Stardom boasts intimate interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger and Sting to name just a few. However, these worldfamous figures take a backseat to the diverse array of backup singers whose lives and stories take centre stage in the film.

The Love Punch (12A) UK 2014 Dir: Joel Hopkins 1hr 46mins With: Louise Bourgoin, Pierce Brosnan, Celia Imrie, Timothy Spall, Emma Thompson

A romantic romp spanning London, Paris, and the French Riviera, The Love Punch brings together Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson in the latest comic charmer from Joel (Last Chance Harvey) Hopkins. Taking his cues from classic capers like A Fish Called Wanda and Romancing the Stone, whilst offering a topical new take on the genre, The Love Punch offers a refreshing tale of barbed flirtation for our financially constrained times. Academy Award-winner Thompson plays Kate, whose biting banter with ex-husband Richard (Brosnan) suggests that the embers of their former ardour haven't been fully T O R O N T O I N T E R N AT I O N A L F I L M F E S T I VA L 2 0 1 3 extinguished. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for their retirement nest egg, which is well and truly wiped out when Richard's investment firm is defrauded and the employee pension fund is siphoned away. Learning that the unscrupulous French financier behind the scheme has just purchased a $10 million diamond for his bride-to-be, the divorced duo grudgingly agree to set aside their differences, and hatch a plot to crash the nuptials and nab the gargantuan rock. Complicating matters is the high-security wedding venue, a cliff-top castle on the Côte d'Azur - a challenge seemingly better suited to Brosnan's erstwhile super-spy alter ego - plus Richard's growing conviction that his split with Kate was a mistake. *Mon 5 May - the film screens at 2.30pm only

Noah (15) USA 2013 Dir: Darren Aronofsky 2hrs 12mins With: Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins, Emma Watson, Ray Winstone

The latest film from Academy Awardwinning director Darren (Black Swan, The Wrestler) Aronofsky is a big budget epic of ‘biblical’ standards. Russell Crowe plays Old Testament figure, Noah. In a world ravaged by human sin, Noah suffers visions of impending doom and is given a divine mission: to build an ark to save creation from the coming flood. With an all-star cast including Anthony Hopkins, Douglas Booth ( Romeo & Juliet ) and Emma Watson, Noah’s production budget exceeded $130 million and is set to become one of the biggest films of 2014. 14

Yves St Laurent (15) France 2014 Dir: Jalil Lespert 1hr 44mins subtitles With: Pierre Niney, Guillaume Gallienne, Charlotte Le Bon, Laura Smet, Marie De Villepin

Paris in 1957. At the age of 21 talented young designer Yves Saint Laurent takes up a position as assistant to couturier Christian Dior. After Dior’s sudden death Saint Laurent is made artistic director of one of the world’s most renowned fashion houses. His first collection is a triumphant success and this shy fashion genius becomes Yves St Laurent famous overnight. In Pierre Bergé he finds the love of his life and together they found their own label: ‘Yves Saint Laurent’. As the years go by, a series of creative crises and emotional conflicts begin to drain this sensitive artist of his energy; they also put a strain on his relationship and the company’s future. Jalil Lespert creates a monument to one of the most creative proponents the world of fashion has ever known. Saint Laurent’s innovative creations revolutionised haute couture, fusing art and contemporanity with wearable elegance and are still regarded as the epitome of French lifestyle. This chronological portrait of an extraordinary personality caught between his meteoric career and his self-destructive inner struggles also reflects the spirit of an era.

“A delicious feel-good romance” B F I L O N D O N F I L M F E S T I VA L 2 0 1 3

Middle class housewife Ila (Kaur) is trying once again to add some spice to her marriage, this time through her cooking. She desperately hopes that this new recipe will finally arouse some kind of reaction from her neglectful husband. She prepares a special lunchbox to be delivered to him at work, but, unbeknownst to her, it is mistakenly delivered to another office worker, Saajan (Irfan), a lonely man on the verge of retirement. Curious about the lack of reaction from her husband, Ila puts a little note in the following day's lunchbox, in the hopes of getting to the bottom of the mystery. This begins a series of lunchbox notes between Saajan and Ila, and the mere comfort of communicating with a stranger anonymously soon evolves into an unexpected friendship. Gradually, their notes become little confessions about their loneliness, memories, regrets, fears, and even small joys. They each discover a new sense of self and find an anchor to hold on to in the big city of Mumbai that so often crushes hopes and dreams. Still strangers physically, Ila and Saajan become lost in a virtual relationship that could jeopardize both their realities. 15

Tracks (PG) Australia 2013 Dir: John Curran 1hr 50mins With: Mia Wasikowska, Adam Driver

In 1977, a twenty-seven-year-old Australian woman named Robyn Davidson (Wasikowska) set out from Alice Springs to walk across 2,700 kilometres of harsh desert to the Indian Ocean. Accompanied only by her dog and four camels, Davidson yearned for a solitary journey of self-discovery, and had no ambition other than to reach the ocean beach. She ultimately wrote about her desert adventure in 1980 in the travelogue Tracks, which became Tracks a cult favourite around the world and has only now been beautifully adapted for the big screen by director John Curran (The Painted Veil). Robyn spends two hard years in the Alice Springs area learning how to train and care for camels in order to prepare for her journey. Finally ready to embark with her animals, she realises she is woefully underfunded and reluctantly accepts a fee from National Geographic in exchange for a written piece. The magazine adds a condition: she must allow photographer Rick Smolan (Driver) to photograph her at selected stops along the way. As adapted by Marion Nelson, Tracks captures two arduous journeys: Robyn’s physical and (arguably more perilous) mental journey. The motivation behind her decision to test her limits, and the reasons for her preference for animals over people, are subtly revealed during the chronicle of the back-breaking crossing. Director John Curran casts the harsh, red-baked land as much more than just Robyn's antagonist — at different points it woos her, threatens her, comforts her, steals from her, and submits to her in this beautifully-shot drama, based on a true story.

Locke (15) UK 2013 Dir: Steven Knight 1hr 25mins With: Olivia Colman, Tom Hardy, Ruth Wilson

Charged with the responsibility of ensuring the sound foundations of huge architectural constructions, structural engineer Ivan Locke (Hardy) is as solid as the concrete that he pours for a living. For ten years he has built a reputation as a highly respected professional and as a fiercely loved father and husband. On the eve of a career-crowning moment, we follow Ivan’s journey driving from Wales to London, and see how one mistake has caused his hitherto firmly focused and controlled life to slowly and completely fall apart. Both Ivan’s brute determination to regain control over his life and his stubborn refusal to engage fully with the emotional reality, are combined perfectly in Hardy’s taut performance. Shot in its entirety over eight days, and never leaving the interior of the car, Knight’s film nevertheless succeeds in creating a gripping atmosphere of tightly wound tension.

Calvary (15) UK 2013 Dir: John Michael McDonagh 1hr 40mins With: Brendan Gleeson, Chris O'Dowd, Kelly Reilly, Aidan Gillen, Dylan Moran, Marie-Josée Croze

Father James (Gleason) is a good priest, driven by spiritual integrity. One day in confession, an unseen man tells James that he’s going to kill him precisely because he’s done nothing wrong. Given a week to make his peace with God, James ministers to sundry lost souls—visits that double as a guided tour of suspects. His preparation for death is further complicated by the arrival of his daughter, who has recently attempted suicide. A departure from The Guard, McDonagh’s brilliantly layered, darkly comedic drama about a good priest tormented by a cynical, spiteful community offers a more philosophical reflection on faith, rooted in the biblical story of Calvary’s two thieves—one redeemed, one damned.

1962. A glamorous American couple, the charismatic Chester MacFarland (Mortensen) and his alluring younger wife Colette (Dunst), arrive in Athens by boat via the Corinthian Canal. While sightseeing at the Acropolis they encounter Rydal (Isaac), a young, Greekspeaking American who is working as a tour “An elegantly pleasurable period thriller, a film guide, scamming tourists on the side. However, all is not as it seems with the MacFarlands and Chester's affable exterior hides darker secrets. When Rydal visits the couple at their exclusive hotel, Chester presses him to help move the body of a seemingly unconscious man who he claims attacked him. In the moment, Rydal agrees but as events take a more sinister turn he finds himself compromised and unable to pull himself free. His increasing infatuation with the vulnerable and responsive Colette gives rise to Chester's jealousy and paranoia, leading to a tense and dangerous battle of wits between the two men.

The Sea (12A) Ireland 2013 Dir: Stephen Brown 1hr 29mins With: Sinead Cusack, Ciarán Hinds, Natascha McElhone, Rufus Sewell, Charlotte Rampling

The Sea

Max Morden (Hinds) is a retired art historian attempting to write a book about French painter Pierre Bonnard. Unable to cope with the recent death of his wife, Max retires to the seaside cottage where he spent a fateful childhood summer with the affluent Cedars family, whose matriarch he quietly pined for — and whose children possessed a troubling secret. When Max returns to the cottage the Cedars have long since vacated, he finds the estate is now looked after by Miss Vavasour (Rampling). She witnesses Max's alcoholic descent into a private abyss, as he is haunted by unbearable losses that demand to be reckoned with. Employing rapturous images of waves and based on the prize-winning John Banville novel, The Sea sweeps us back and forth in time, alternately roiling with fleeting idyll and growing menace. There are intimations of trauma lurking in Max's past. We never lose our place in Brown's intricate temporal weave, or in the emotional layers conveyed by Hinds, whose “An immersive pinched mouth and furtive eyes exude a secret ocean of memories. Here, in tale of a troubled one of his most compelling roles, this elegantly contained and controlled past engulfing actor keeps us transfixed — and keeps us guessing until the film's dark yet cathartic revelations. the present” TORONTO I N T E R N AT I O N A L F I L M F E S T I VA L 2013

We Are the Best! (15)

We Are The Best!

Sweden 2013 Dir: Lukas Moodysson 1hr 42mins subtitles With: Mira Barkhammar, Mira Grosin, Liv LeMoyne

Set in early 1980s Stockholm, We Are The Best! focuses on three girls, Bobo, Klara and Hedvig — outcasts who are about to enter their teenage years, and share little with their classmates. The other girls are offended by their independence and the boys just don't like their punk-influenced style and bravado. They're even less enamoured of the trio when they start their own band. The adults are even more useless. Bobo's mother is a serial dater who's into partying and seldom knows where Bobo is. Klara's parents are gruesomely happy (when they're not arguing about ridiculous stuff), and Hedvig's mom is a devout Christian. Based on a graphic novel, We Are The Best! is a paean to DIY culture and the need for revolt. Neglected or taken for granted at home and school, the girls react by making themselves unignorable, sporting mohawks and brush cuts. When they're mocked for looking different T O R O N T O I N T E R N AT I O N A L F I L M F E S T I VA L 2 0 1 3 they demand centre stage. Propelled by a skilled ensemble cast led by the three young principals, who make everything utterly poignant and believable, the film pays tribute to the accidental rebels who object to the system instinctively as much as intellectually — and have the courage not to hide their opposition to it.

Exhibition (15) UK 2013 Dir: Joanna Hogg 1hr 44mins With: Viv Albertine, Liam Gillick, Tom Hiddleston

Joanna Hogg’s (Unrelated, Archipelago) exquisitely observed third feature is her first to be set in London. Its central protagonists are artist couple D and H (Viv Albertine, guitarist of influential punk group The Slits and Turner prize nominated artist Liam Gillick) who are preparing to sell the modernist home that has defined their relationship, and quite possibly their work, for almost two decades. What has prompted the move is not entirely clear, but what is certain is that the anxieties, dreams and memories that surface in response to the impending sale expose the fissures in this cool, austere relationship. The house itself is a commanding third character, its Chinese puzzle of sharp angles and sliding doors are as difficult to fathom as its inhabitants. Hogg’s fascinating, entirely singular film conceals as much as it reveals.
