“Binoche’s portrayal of Camille is one of the most wrenching performances she has given” N E W YO R K T I M E S
Mon 28 – Tue 29 July 2014 (+10.30am Thu 31 July 2014)
Camille Claudel 1915 (PG) France 2014 Dir: Bruno Dumont 1hr 39min subtitles With: Juliette Binoche, Jean-Luc Vincent, Robert Leroy
In Camille Claudel 1915, Juliette Binoche gives a mesmerizing performance as Auguste Rodin’s protégé (and later mistress), and sister of the Christian/mystic poet Paul Claudel. Inspired by the correspondence between Paul and Camille, writer/director Bruno Dumont (Humanité, La Vie de Jesus) focuses on Camille Claudel’s struggle to find understanding and recognition as an artist - and the moments before her brother’s visit while she is confined to a mental institution. Shot in a real psychiatric asylum, Bruno Dumont brings together a supporting cast comprised of real-life patients and their actual nurses that, alongside Binoche, create an emotionally intense ensemble - and a rare cinematic experience. While the camera rarely ventures outside of her prison’s thick walls, the story of Camille Claudel’s 29-year confinement is in itself a tale of defiance against social norms - and a testament to the power of creativity and fortitude.

The Young and Prodigious T. S. Spivet (12A) France/Canada 2014 Dir: Jean-Pierre Jeunet 1hr 44mins With: Helena Bonham Carter, Kyle Catlett, Judy Davis, Robert Maillet
Jean-Pierre Jeunet, director of Amélie and A Very Long Engagement, returns with a superbly realised adaptation of the bestselling Reif Larsen novel, The Young and Prodigious T. S. Spivet. Young T. S. Spivet (Catlett) lives on a Montana ranch with his mother (a beetleobsessive), father (a wannabe cowboy) and his 14-year-old, pageant-obsessed sister. His brother Layton died in an accident in the family’s barn; T. S. was with him, but doesn’t recall what happened. A prodigy, T. S. has a passion for maps and scientific inventions, and one day gets a call from the Smithsonian Museum to say that he has won the prestigious Baird prize for his discovery of the perpetual motion machine. Without telling anybody, he sets out on a freight train to journey across the US towards Washington, D. C. Also starring Helena Bonham Carter, Jeunet’s trademark visual style – highly-coloured, mischievous, and full of inventive flair – is much in evidence in this sparky, immensely enjoyable film.

A Hard Day’s Night (U) UK 1964 Dir: Richard Lester 1hr 24mins With: Wilfred Brambell, George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr
During the first worldwide flush of Beatlemania in 1964, United Artists wanted to ship out a movie with The Beatles before their vogue was over. Working within a tight $500,000 budget, director Richard Lester turned out A Hard Day’s Night in a fast 6 weeks. Using a variety of techniques borrowed from Hollywood slapstick comedies, the French “new wave” movement, and his own experiences as a TV-commercial director, Lester, with screenwriter Alun Owen, fashioned an exhilarating study of a “typical” 36 hours in the lives of the Fab Four. Onto a plot about getting to the Big Show on time are hung a series of instant-reaction gags, character vignettes, and musical set pieces. Including the hits Can’t Buy Me Love, And I Love Her and A Hard Day’s Night – the film is still a delight to watch and has proven itself to be a rock-and-roll movie classic.

Boyhood (15) USA 2014 Dir: Richard Linklater 2hrs 45mins With: Patricia Arquette, Ellar Coltrane, Ethan Hawke, Lorelei Linklater
Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason’s parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, Boyhood charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay’s Yellow to Arcade Fire’s Deep Blue. Boyhood is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. It’s impossible to watch Mason and his family without thinking about our own journey. *Please note film commences at 7pm

A Promise (12A) Belgium/France 2013 Dir: Patrice Leconte 1hr 35mins With: Rebecca Hall, Richard Madden, Alan Rickman
Based on Stefan Zweig’s novel Journey into the Past, set in pre-First World War Germany A Promise is an elegantly directed, keenly modulated love story. Hoffmeister (Rickman) is an ailing factory owner, whiskered and respectable. As his energies flag, he looks to a sharp young man in his employ for help. Ludwig (Madden) impresses Hoffmeister with his reliability and youthful spirit, and the older man finds himself leaning more and more on this promising up-and-comer. At the same time, Hoffmeister’s young bride (Hall) is looking for a tutor for their child, and Ludwig proves both flexible and willing. When he moves into their home, an emotional triangle develops. Societal dignity and decorum must be respected, and it is. Nevertheless, heated passions come into play, while Hoffmeister looks on. Unravelling over many years, A Promise explores how love can take many forms before it either blooms or fades. Beneath those starched shirts and lacy blouses, feelings of respect and care rub up against those of lust and desire.

Grand Central (15) France 2013 Dir: Rebecca Zlotowski 1hr 34mins subtitles With: Olivier Gourmet, Denis Menochet, Tahir Rahim, Lea Seydoux
French writer-director Rebecca Zlotowski follows her impressive 2010 debut Belle Epine with a punchy, compelling workplace drama. Tahar Rahim (A Prophet) plays Gary, who signs on for work in a nuclear power plant (the ‘Central’ of the title). He’s inducted into the workforce by supervisor Gilles (Olivier Gourmet) and hardbitten veteran Toni (Menochet), only to discover that radiation contamination is not just a risk factor but an everyday hazard, the dirty open Grand Central secret of his new profession. But also pushing Gary towards meltdown is his simmering attraction to Toni’s girlfriend Karole (Seydoux). This politically charged, somewhat Loachian drama has the intensely satisfying narrative drive of a Zola novel, as well as echoing classic Hollywood blue-collar dramas in the Howard Hawks vein. The cast is terrific, with Rahim and Seydoux crackling like isotopes in their own right, and an urgent jazz score by Robin Coudert pushing this atomic drama into the red.
Thu 28 August & Mon 1 September 2014 Parent & Baby Screening Mon 1 September 2014 at 10.30am Mood Indigo (12A) L’Ecume des Jours France 2013 Dir: Michel Gondry 1hr 30mins subtitles With: Romain Duris, Omar Sy, Gad Elmaleh, Aissaa Maiga, Audrey Tautou
When Colin (Duris) meets the woman of his dreams Chloé (Tautou) they take a ride in a glass-domed cloud floating over Paris, and for their wedding day he buys her a perspex limousine. But their idyllic marriage comes crashing down when Chloé falls sick with a water lily growing in her lung. To pay medical bills in this fantasy version of Paris, Colin works a series of increasingly absurd jobs, while around them their apartment disintegrates and their friends go to pieces. Michel Gondry’s film is based on the 1947 classic novel ‘L’Écume des Jours’ (‘Froth on the Daydream’) by Boris Vian, a rich text that describes many surreal, visual treats and allows Gondry to pour his imagination onto the screen. And at a time when CGI seems to rule the box-office, he refreshingly champions incamera effects and clever staging. Gondry has produced something original and spectacular – this is a film that needs to be seen on a big, big screen!

Lilting (15) UK 2014 Dir: Hong Khaou 1hr 31mins With: Peter Bowles, Naomi Christie, Andrew Leung, Cheng Pei Pei, Ben Whishaw
Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Bright Star) and Cheng Pei Pei (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) star in Hong Khaou’s first feature, a soulful and moving drama about loss and the limitations of language. Set in contemporary London, it depicts Chinese-Cambodian Junn (Pei Pei) who’s mourning the untimely death of her son Kai (Leung). She has lived in London for over 20 years but has not assimilated; she doesn’t speak English and is completely isolated by Kai’s death. Kai never came out to her but after his death, his former boyfriend Richard (Whishaw) gets in touch. Struggling to communicate without a shared language, Richard brings along an interpreter, Vann (Christie) and gradually he and Junn begin to talk, and to mourn the man they both adored together. Lyrical and suffused with tenderness, Lilting is eloquent on the pain of loss, on how the estrangement of grief can mirror other types of alienation, and on both contemporary young gay relationships and cultural divides – but it’s also humorous, particularly in relation to retiree Alan’s (Peter Bowles – TV’s To the Manor Born) romantic pursuit of Junn.

God’s Pocket
Wed 10 – Thu 11 September 2014
God’s Pocket (15) USA 2014 Dir: John Slattery 1hr 28mins With: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christina Hendricks, John Turturro
In the gritty, blue-collar neighborhood of God’s Pocket, Mickey Scarpato’s crazy stepson, Leon, is killed in a construction “accident,” and Mickey (Hoffman) quickly tries to bury the bad news with the body. But when a local columnist comes sniffing around for the truth, things go from bad to worse. Mickey finds himself stuck in a life-and-death struggle compounded by a body he can’t bury, a wife he can’t please, and a debt he can’t pay. Acclaimed actor John Slattery makes an impressive jump behind the camera with an assured directorial debut that shows he has a razor-sharp eye for conveying the absurdity, cruelty, desperation, and tragic optimism of the people he portrays. Like life, his scenes seamlessly fuse humour and heartbreak, but it’s Slattery’s wit and confident style that make the portrait so authentic. Featuring a top-shelf cast and impeccable cinematography, God’s Pocket oozes with talent and marks the emergence of an inspired directorial presence.

The Rover (15) Australia 2014 Dir: David Michôd 1hr 43mins With Scoot McNairy, Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson
Ten years after a collapse of the western economic system, Australia’s mineral resources have drawn the desperate and dangerous to its shores. With society in decline, the rule of law has disintegrated and life is cheap. Eric (Pearce) is a cold and angry drifter who has left everything and everyone behind. When his car – his last possession – is stolen by a gang of desperate desert hustlers, Eric embarks on a ruthless mission to track them down. Along the way, he is forced into an unlikely relationship with Rey (Pattinson), the naïve and injured younger brother of gang member Henry (McNairy) who has left Rey behind in the bloody aftermath of the gang’s most recent robbery.

Two Days, One Night (15) Belgium/France 2014 Dir: Luc & Jean-Pierre Dardenne 1hr 35mins subtitles With: Marion Cotillard, Fabrizio Rongione
Rapturously received at this year’s Cannes, where it screened in competition for the Palme d’Or, the latest from Belgium’s masters of social realism, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, stars Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose, Rust and Bone) as a woman who must convince her colleagues to give up their bonuses so she can keep her job. Returning to work at a solar panel factory after suffering a breakdown, Sandra (Cotillard) finds the management have forced the rest of the staff to choose between eliminating her or keeping their 1,000 euro bonuses. She forces a vote but has only a weekend to persuade her colleagues to support her. Visibly desperate, she is a disturbing presence, intruding on her colleagues’ Two Days, One Night weekends and asking them to give up a much-needed bonus to help a colleague they barely know; all the while still battling the depression and anxiety that saw her off work in the first place. A parable of anonymity and alienation in the 21st century workplace, the Dardenne brothers seem to be offering a wider commentary on the effects of economic pressures on community in contemporary society.

Before I Go To Sleep (15) UK 2014 Dir: Rowan Joffé 1hr 31mins With: Anne-Marie Duff, Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, Mark Strong
Adapted from S.J Watson’s critically-acclaimed novel, Before I Go To Sleep charts the story of Christine (Kidman), a writer who, following a catastrophic accident in her mid-twenties, is incapable of forming and maintaining new memories for more than a day. Trapped in an existence in which she wakes every day believing herself to be single and with a whole lifetime of choice ahead of her she discovers instead that she lives with her husband, Ben (Firth), with most decisions already made. The film follows her attempts to make sense of her world. When Chrissie learns that she has been meeting with a doctor, Dr Nash (Strong) who is helping her to recover her memory - and that following his suggestion she has been keeping a journal in order to record her fragmentary recollections and piece together her past - she is hopeful that she may be cured. But the story that emerges is to set in motion a terrifying voyage of discovery that will ultimately have startling consequences for her and all who love her, leading her to question whether the truth is sometimes better left forgotten. Pride (15) UK 2014 Dir: Matthew Warchus 2hrs With: Paddy Considine, Bill Nighy, Andrew Scott, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West
It’s the summer of 1984 – Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support. But the activists are not deterred. They decide to ignore the Union and go direct to the miners. They identify a mining village in deepest Wales and set off in a mini bus to make their donation in person. And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership.

Magic in the Moonlight (cert tbc) USA 2014 Dir: Woody Allen mins tbc With: Eileen Atkins, Colin Firth, Marcia Gay Harden, Simon McBurney, Emma Stone, Jacki Weaver
Chinese conjuror Wei Ling Soo is the most celebrated magician of his age, but few know that he is the stage persona of Stanley Crawford (Firth), a grouchy and arrogant Englishman with a sky-high opinion of himself and an aversion to phony spiritualists’ claims. Persuaded by his friend, Howard Burkan (McBurney), Stanley goes on a mission to the Côte d’Azur mansion of the Catledge family: mother Grace (Weaver), son Brice, and daughter Caroline. He presents himself as a businessman named Stanley Taplinger in order to debunk the alluring young clairvoyant Sophie Baker (Stone) who is staying there with her mother (Harden). Sophie arrived at the Catledge villa at the invitation of Grace, who is convinced that Sophie can help her contact her late husband, and once there, attracted the attention of Brice, who has fallen for her head over heels. What follows is a series of events that are magical in every sense of the word and send the characters reeling. In the end, the biggest trick Magic in the Moonlight plays is the one that fools us all.

The One Hundred Foot Journey (PG) USA 2014 Dir: Lasse Hallstrom 2hrs 2mins With: Manish Dayal, Charlotte Le Bon, Helen Mirren, Om Puri
Hassan Kadam (Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. When Hassan and his family, led by Papa (Puri), move to a quaint village in the South of France with the grand plan of opening an Indian restaurant in the picturesque countryside, they are undeterred by the fact that only 100 feet opposite stands a Michelin starred classical French eatery. However The One Hundred Foot Journey upon encountering the icy proprietress, Madame Mallory (Mirren), the Kadam family realise they may have bitten off more than they can chew. Outraged by the new arrivals, Madame Mallory is determined to have their business shut down. As cultures clash and food flies, an all-out war escalates between the two establishments -- until, that is, Hassan's passion and talent for French cuisine begin to enchant Madame Mallory and even she can't deny this young chef could have what it takes to garner even more acclaim for her beloved restaurant. This, along with his new-found friendship with her beautiful sous chef Marguerite (Le Bon), starts to weave a magic between the two cultures and, despite their different tastes, they discover an unlikely recipe for success that surprises them all. 17
