The Two Faces of January (12A) USA 2013 Dir: Hossein Amini 1hr 36mins With: Kirsten Dunst, Oscar Issac, Viggo Mortensen
1962. A glamorous American couple, the charismatic Chester MacFarland (Mortensen) and his alluring younger wife Colette (Dunst), arrive in Athens by boat via the Corinthian Canal. While sightseeing at the Acropolis they encounter Rydal (Isaac), a young, Greekspeaking American who is working as a tour guide, scamming tourists on the side. Drawn to Colette's beauty and impressed by Chester's wealth and sophistication, Rydal gladly accepts their invitation to dinner. However, all is not as it seems with the MacFarlands and Chester's affable exterior hides darker secrets. When Rydal visits the couple at their exclusive hotel, Chester presses him to help move the body of a seemingly unconscious man who he claims attacked him. In the moment, Rydal agrees but as events take a more sinister turn he finds himself compromised and unable to pull himself free. His increasing infatuation with the vulnerable and responsive Colette gives rise to Chester's jealousy and paranoia, leading to a tense and dangerous battle of wits between the two men. Slick thriller based on the Patricia Highsmith novel.

The Sea (12A) Ireland 2013 Dir: Stephen Brown 1hr 29mins With: Sinead Cusack, Ciarán Hinds, Natascha McElhone, Rufus Sewell, Charlotte Rampling
Max Morden (Hinds) is a retired art historian attempting to write a book about French painter Pierre Bonnard. Unable to cope with the recent The Sea death of his wife, Max retires to the seaside cottage where he spent a fateful childhood summer with the affluent Cedars family, whose matriarch he quietly pined for - and whose children possessed a troubling secret. When Max returns to the cottage the Cedars have long since vacated, he finds the estate is now looked after by Miss Vavasour (Rampling). She witnesses Max's alcoholic descent into a private abyss, as he is haunted by unbearable losses that demand to be reckoned with. Employing rapturous images of waves and based on the prize-winning John Banville novel, The Sea sweeps us back and forth in time, “An immersive tale of a troubled alternately roiling with fleeting idyll and growing menace. There are past engulfing the present” intimations of trauma lurking in Max's T O R O N T O I N T E R N AT I O N A L F I L M F E S T I VA L 2 0 1 3 past. We never lose our place in Brown's intricate temporal weave, or in the emotional layers conveyed by Hinds, whose pinched mouth and furtive eyes exude a secret ocean of memories. Here, in one of his most compelling roles, this elegantly contained and controlled actor keeps us transfixed - and keeps us guessing until the film's dark yet cathartic revelations.

We Are The Best! (15) Sweden 2013 Dir: Lukas Moodysson 1hr 42mins subtitles With: Mira Barkhammar, Mira Grosin, Liv LeMoyne
Set in early 1980s Stockholm, We Are The Best focuses on three girls, Bobo, Klara and Hedvig — outcasts who are about to enter their teenage years, and share little with their classmates. The other girls are offended by their independence and the boys just don't like their punk-influenced style and bravado. They're even less enamoured of the We Are The Best trio when they start their own band. The adults are even more useless. Bobo's mother is a serial dater who's into partying and seldom knows where Bobo is. Klara's parents are gruesomely happy (when they're not arguing about ridiculous stuff), and Hedvig's mom is a devout Christian. Based on a graphic novel, We Are The Best! is a paean to DIY culture and the need for revolt. Neglected or taken for granted at home and school, the girls react by making themselves unignorable, sporting mohawks and brush cuts. When they're mocked for looking different they demand centre stage. Propelled by a skilled ensemble cast led by the three young principals, who make everything utterly poignant and believable, the film pays tribute to the accidental rebels who object to the system instinctively as much as intellectually — and have the courage not to hide their opposition to it.

Exhibition (15) UK 2013 Dir: Joanna Hogg 1hr 44mins With: Viv Albertine, Liam Gillick, Tom Hiddleston
Joanna Hogg’s (Unrelated, Archipelago) exquisitely observed third feature is her first to be set in London. Its central protagonists are artist couple D and H (Viv Albertine, guitarist of influential punk group The Slits and Turner prize nominated artist Liam Gillick) who are preparing to sell the modernist home that has defined their relationship, and quite possibly their work, for almost two decades. What has prompted the move is not entirely clear, but what is certain is that the anxieties, dreams and memories that surface in response to the impending sale expose the fissures in this cool, austere relationship. The house itself is a commanding third character, its Chinese puzzle of sharp angles and sliding doors are as difficult to fathom as its inhabitants. Hogg’s fascinating, entirely singular film conceals as much as it reveals.

In Secret (15) USA 2013 Dir: Charlie Stratton 1hr 47mins With: Tom Felton, Oscar Issac, Jessica Lange, Elizabeth OIsen
Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) and Jessica Lange (Tootsie, Frances) star in this adaptation of Emile Zola’s scandalous ‘mud and blood’ novel Thérèse Raquin. Olsen is Thérèse, a young woman in 1860s Paris trapped in an unsatisfactory marriage to her sickly cousin Camille (Felton) by her domineering aunt Madame Raquin (Lange). Bored of her confinement both at work and at home, she’s immediately intrigued by her husband’s suave childhood friend Laurent (Isaac) when he arrives on the scene; an intrigue that leads to a compulsive affair with far-reaching consequences. Handsomely-shot and faithful to the spirit of Zola’s novel – which considers the problem of uncontrollable desire in a restrictive society - In Secret revels in the interplay between the superb Jessica Lange and Elizabeth Olsen; with a supporting cast featuring British actors Shirley Henderson, Mackenzie Crook and Matt Lucas.

Before The Winter Chill (15) Avant l’hiver France/Luxembourg 2013 Dir: Philippe Claudel 1hr 43min subtitles With: Daniel Auteuil, Kristen Scott Thomas, Leila Bekhti
With nods to Claude Chabrol through its meticulous character Before The Winter Chill development, class consciousness and subtle ratcheting of tension, this subtle French thriller from the writer/director (novelist) Claude Claudel and star Kristin Scott Thomas (I Loved You So Long) is at once an incisive portrait of a marriage as well as a policier of considerable skill and invention. Claudel’s casting brings to mind Haneke’s Hidden as successful surgeon Paul (Auteuil) finds himself the recipient of the grateful attention of a former patient. Initially flattering, the behaviour soon becomes confusing and eventually threatening. His wife Lucie (Scott Thomas) is at first supportive but becomes increasingly suspicious of her husband’s behaviour resulting in a chasm opening up between the couple, exposing the previously ignored fault lines emerging in their marriage. It’s an adult, controlled and involving piece of cinema which secures Claudel’s reputation as a major talent on this, only his second outing behind the camera. *Please note: Thursday 19th June film commences at 5.30pm

Grace of Monaco (PG) USA/France 2014 Dir: Olivier Dahan 1hr 43mins With: Roger Ashton-Griffiths , Nicole Kidman, Robert Lindsay, Parker Posey, Tim Roth
Opening this year’s Cannes Film Festival and set against the dazzling backdrop of the Grimaldi coast, Grace of Monaco is set to be one of the most talked about films of the year. Nicole Kidman stars in the real-life fairytale of an actress who had to choose between Hollywood and being a princess. It's 1962, six years after Oscar-winning Hollywood actress Grace Kelly (Kidman) married Prince Rainier III of Monaco (Roth). Now Grace yearns to respond to the overtures of Alfred Hitchcock (Ashton-Griffiths) and return to film-making. But being a mother of two and monarch of a small European principality makes this a challenge. Fate intervenes when France seeks to regain Monaco by force, plunging the country into turmoil. Now Grace is forced to make the biggest decision of her life. She can either be an international movie star or recognise her obligation to her husband and adopted country - and accept that she will never act again. From Olivier Dahan, director of the Oscar-winning 'La Vie en Rose', this is a powerful blend of sweeping romance and personal and political crisis. Grace of Monaco

Fading Gigolo (15) USA 2013 Dir: John Turturro 1hr 30mins With: Woody Allen, John Turturro, Vanessa Paradis, Liev Schreiber, Sharon Stone
Fioravante (Turturro) is a junior florist and friend to Murray (Allen), whose small bookshop is facing closure. To help the business stay solvent, the two men decide to try the world's oldest profession. In a New York full of wealthy older women with active libidos, surely a greying Don Juan could make a few bucks? And so, adopting the names "Virgil Howard" and "Dan Bongo," the duo gets to work. Turturro’s left-field comedy is a sharp and witty tale that features legendary screen Fading Gigolo sexpots Sharon Stone and Sofia Vergara, as well as a delicate reluctant widow (Paradis, in her first Englishspeaking role) with whom Fioravante strikes up an intimate relationship, triggering in him unexpected feelings. This wry narrative segues from comedy of modern New York manners to subtle adult romance. But there are delicious plot twists in store yet for the two friends, as they get entangled in the mysteries of femininity that they attempt to exploit without fully comprehending. Don’t miss this charming and provocative film from actor-writer-director John Turturro.

Jimmy’s Hall (12A) UK 2014 Dir: Ken Loach 1hr 46mins With: Barry Ward, Simone Kirby, Jim Norton, Andrew Scott
This period drama from award-wining director Ken Loach (The Angel’s Share) tells the story of political activist Jimmy Gralton. Deported from Ireland in 1921 after building a dance hall on a rural crossroad, Gralton’s sin was to try and inspire young people to learn, to argue, to dream... and above all to dance and have fun. Jimmy's Hall celebrates the spirit of these free thinkers. Set in Ireland, the film follows events when Jimmy returned from a decade in New York and re-opened the hall in the turbulent year of 1932. Rumoured to be Loach’s last feature film, Jimmy’s Hall is being tipped to follow in the footsteps of his earlier multi-award-winning, powerful work, The Wind that Shakes the Barley.

Venus in Fur (15) La Vénus à la Fourrure France 2014 Dir: Roman Polanski 1hr 35mins subtitles With: Emmanuelle Seigner, Mathieu Amalric
Alone in a Paris theatre after a long day of auditioning actresses for his new play, writer-director Thomas (Amalric) complains that no actress he's seen has what it takes to play the lead female character: a woman who enters into an agreement with her male counterpart to dominate him as her slave. Thomas is about to leave the theatre when actress Vanda (Seigner) bursts in, a whirlwind of erratic - and, it turns out, erotic - energy. At first she seems to embody everything Thomas has been lamenting. She is pushy, foul-mouthed, desperate and ill-prepared - or so it seems. When Thomas finally, reluctantly, agrees to let her try out for the part, he is stunned and captivated by her transformation. Not only is Vanda a perfect fit (even sharing the character's name), but she apparently has researched the role exhaustively, learned her lines by heart and even bought her own props. The likeness proves to be much more than skindeep. As the extended "audition" builds momentum, Thomas moves from attraction to obsession until, with Vanda taking an ever more dominant role, the balance of power shifts completely. Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway play by David Ives, which itself was based on Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's ground-breaking 19th century novella, Venus in Fur is the latest film from master filmmaker Roman Polanski.

Belle (12A) UK 2014 Dir: Amma Asante 1hr 45mins With: Sarah Gadon, Matthew Goode, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Miranda Richardson, Tom Wilkinson, Emily Watson
Belle is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle (Mbatha-Raw), the illegitimate mixed race daughter of Admiral Sir John Lindsay (Goode). Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Watson), Belle's lineage affords her certain privileges, yet her status prevents her from the traditions of noble social standing. While her cousin Elizabeth (Gadon) chases suitors for marriage, Belle is left on the sidelines wondering if she will ever find love. After meeting an idealistic young vicar's son bent on changing society, he and Belle help shape Lord Mansfield's role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England. From the director of 2004’s award-winning debut A Way of Life (with Brenda Blethyn), Belle marks a welcome return behind the camera to director Amma Asante.

Fruitvale Station (15) USA 2013 Dir: Ryan Coogler 1hr 25mins With: Michael B Jordan, Melonie Diaz, Octavia Spencer
Winner of both the Grand Jury Prize for dramatic feature and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, director Ryan Coogler's Fruitvale Station follows the true story of Oscar Grant (Jordan), a 22-year-old San Francisco Bay Area resident who wakes up on the morning of December 31, 2008 and feels something in the air. Not sure what it is, he takes it as a sign to get a head start on his resolutions: being a better son to his mother (Academy award winner Octavia Spencer), whose birthday falls on New Year's Eve, being a better partner to his girlfriend Sophina (Diaz), who he hasn't been completely honest with as of late, and being a better father to Tatiana, their beautiful four year-old daughter. Crossing paths with friends, family, and strangers, Oscar starts out well, but as the day goes on, he realises that change is not going to come easily. His resolve takes a tragic turn, however, when a police officer shoots him in cold blood at the Fruitvale subway stop on New Year's Day. The policeman, whose actions were captured on numerous mobile phone videos, claimed he mistook his gun for his tazer; he eventually went to prison but the damage was done and Oscar died the next morning. Oscar's life and tragic death would shake the Bay Area - and the entire nation - to its very core, leading to protests and a national discussion but the specifics of the life lost were largely ignored. An impressive debut by writer/director Coogler, Fruitvale Station delivers an emotional and powerful punch, delivered with both restraint and pathos.

Fri 18 – Sun 20 July 2014
The Devil’s Knot (15) USA 2013 Dir: Atom Egoyan 1hr 56mins With: Dane Dehaan, Colin Firth, Alessandro Nivolo, Reece Witherspoon
When three young boys were brutally murdered in the small community of West Memphis, Arkansas, in 1993, their deaths led to shock and outrage in this tightly knit religious town. It wasn't long before three teenagers were arrested, tried, and sentenced — two of them to life imprisonment and one to death - despite the fact that they all claimed innocence. This story of wrongful conviction roiled the American justice system, brought a number of prominent movie stars and rock musicians to the defence of the three young men, and resulted in a media campaign that did much to keep the case in the public eye. Atom Egoyan (Chloe, The Sweet Hereafter) dramatizes the fallout from the notorious 1993 West Memphis murders, focusing on the grieving mother (Witherspoon) of one of the murdered boys as she grows increasingly troubled by the lynch-mob fever that grips the town and Ron Lax (Firth), a private investigator for whom the sum of the case's parts doesn't quite add up, and who is driven to get at the truth.

In an attempt to fill her sprawling days, and to encourage her to meet new people, Caroline’s daughters buy her a monthly pass to the splendidly named ‘Bright Days Ahead’ – a centre for the young-at-heart but not so agile of body, to learn new skills like pottery, painting and browsing the internet. Camille Claudel 1915
Camille Claudel 1915 (15) France 2014 Dir: Bruno Dumont 1hr 39min subtitles With: Juliette Binoche, Jean-Luc Vincent, Robert Leroy
In Camille Claudel 1915, Juliette Binoche gives a mesmerizing performance as Auguste Rodin's protégé (and later mistress), and sister of the Christian/mystic poet Paul Claudel. Inspired by the correspondence between Paul and Camille, writer/director Bruno Dumont (Humanité, La Vie de Jesus) focuses on Camille Claudel's struggle to find understanding and recognition as an artist - and the moments before her brother's visit while she is confined to a mental institution. Shot in a real psychiatric asylum, Bruno Dumont brings together a supporting cast comprised of real-life patients and their actual nurses that, alongside Binoche, create an emotionally intense ensemble - and a rare cinematic experience. While the camera rarely ventures outside of her prison's thick walls, the story of Camille Claudel's 29-year confinement is in itself a tale of defiance against social norms - and a testament to the power of creativity and fortitude.

The Young and Prodigious T. S. Spivet (PG) France/Canada 2014 Dir: Jean-Pierre Jeunet 1hr 44mins With: Helena Bonham Carter, Kyle Catlett, Judy Davis, Robert Maillet
Jean-Pierre Jeunet, director of Amélie and A Very Long Engagement, returns with a superbly realised adaptation of The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet the bestselling Reif Larsen novel, The Young and Prodigious T. S. Spivet. Young T. S. Spivet (Catlett) lives on a Montana ranch with his mother (a beetle-obsessive), father (a wannabe cowboy) and his 14-year-old, pageant-obsessed sister. His brother Layton died in an accident in the family’s barn; T. S. was with him, but doesn’t recall what happened. A prodigy, T. S. has a passion for maps and scientific inventions, and one day gets a call from the Smithsonian Museum to say that he has won the prestigious Baird prize for his discovery of the perpetual motion machine. Without telling anybody, he sets out on a freight train to journey across the US towards Washington, D. C. Also starring Helena Bonham Carter, Jeunet’s trademark visual style – highly-coloured, mischievous, and full of inventive flair – is much in evidence in this sparky, immensely enjoyable film. Film is screened in 2D 16

A Hard Day’s Night (U) UK 1964 Dir: Richard Lester 1hr 28mins With: Wilfred Brambell, George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr
During the first worldwide flush of Beatlemania in 1964, United Artists wanted to ship out a movie with The Beatles before their vogue was over. Working within a tight $500,000 budget, director Richard Lester turned out A Hard Day's Night in a fast 6 weeks. Using a variety of techniques borrowed from Hollywood slapstick comedies, the French "new wave" movement, and his own experiences as a TV-commercial director, Lester, with screenwriter Alun Owen, fashioned an exhilarating study of a "typical" 36 hours in the lives of the Fab Four. Onto a plot about getting to the Big Show on time are hung a series of instant-reaction gags, character vignettes, and musical set pieces. Including the hits Can't Buy Me Love, And I Love Her and A Hard Day's Night – the film is still a delight to watch and has proven itself to be a rock-and-roll movie classic.
