Pride (15) UK 2014 Dir: Matthew Warchus 2hrs With: Paddy Considine, Bill Nighy, Andrew Scott, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West
It’s the summer of 1984 – Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support. Undeterred, they go direct to a mining village in deepest Wales to make their donation in person. And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership.

Chinese conjuror Wei Ling Soo is the most celebrated magician of his age, but few know that he is the stage persona of Stanley Crawford (Firth), a grouchy and arrogant Englishman with a sky-high opinion of himself and an aversion to phony spiritualists’ claims. What follows is a series of events that are magical in every sense of the word and send the characters reeling. In the end, the biggest trick Magic in Moonlight plays is the one that fools us all.
