The Work Project

Page 1

We all know how hard it can be to act and speak as a Christian in the workplace and the pressing issues of everyday working life can make the workplace a minefield. Unethical decisions. Short term gains. Unkind words. Bullying and inappropriate sexual comments. Who hasn’t experienced that moment of uncertainty, having to react on the spur of a moment to a difficult comment or situation only to discover that our reaction wasn’t as good as we would have liked it to be. And what about those times when it’s easier to lie than tell the uncomfortable truth, or when it’s easier to stay quiet than speak out, for example when a friend is bullied. The workplace is made even more awkward for the church-going Christian by well meaning pastors who encourage us to be everyday witnesses without helping us to do it. Most of us don’t need to be told to be better witnesses at work. The reality is that we spend most of our lives in our workplace and we want to be the best we can be. What we want to know is - how do we do it? This is what The Work Project is for. We recognise how difficult the workplace is because we’ve experienced it firsthand. We want to help every working Christian to grow in their discipleship in the place where they have been called to spend most of their effort and energy. At the heart of The Work Project is the belief that every working Christian can improve their effectiveness in the workplace through personal growth and development. And The Work Project has an aim even greater than individual growth. We believe that success is nothing less than the transformation of every workplace through the effective witness of ordinary Christians. So what is The Work Project? It is a community of working Christians meeting on an occasional basis to listen, talk and learn together about transforming ourselves and our workplace. It’s focus is on the question: how do we connect our faith with our daily working lives? Who is The Work Project for? It’s for you. It’s for any Christian who works with others at a place of work, from an office worker in the private sector to a hospital worker in the public sector. It’s for the teacher, the banker, the shop worker or the volunteer working in a charity. The exact format of events is still being considered and this is where we need your help. You have been sent the questionnaire because we know that you are committed to living well as a Christian witness in the workplace, and your answers in the questionnaire will help us design the ideal event. This is an opportunity to be involved in shaping The Work Project from the beginning. The questionnaire takes 10 minutes to complete and we would be very grateful for your feedback.
