by Ron Rash
What would happen if Greenville County residents read the same book at the same time? Find out by participating in The Amazing Read 2009! Come to any library location and check out the book, then join in this interactive series.
Saints at the River
The town of Tamassee, South Carolina erupts in heated controversy after a twelve-year-old girl drowns in the local river. When the girl’s parents discover an inventive way to free her body from underwater, some of the town’s environmentalists refuse the disturbance to their one remaining natural treasure. Follow Maggie Glenn, a Columbia newspaper photojournalist, as she sympathizes with the town she grew up in while trying to stay objective.

"Wolf Cliff is a place where nature has gone out of its way to make humans feel insignificant. The cliff itself is two hundred feet of granite that looms over the gorge. A fissure jags down its gray face like a piece of black imbedded lightning. The river tightens and deepens. Even water that looks calm moves quick and dangerous." - Saints at the River

"I can only do one more thing for Ruth, and that is to get her out of the river, because it’s not just her body down there but her soul. That’s what my church has said for hundreds of years – that a person is in purgatory until the body is given Last Rites." - Saints at the River
