Does your video gamer want to CREATE video games, instead of just playing them? In Camp Jr. Video Game Maker, campers will be using a software program from MIT called Scratch. The program was designed for children and teaches them the basics of programing as they create animated stories, video games and interactive artwork. Using colorful programming blocks, campers drag and “snap” together the blocks to make a character (Sprite) walk, speak, play music or interact with other sprites. Since computer programming is considered the new literacy, young people now have an opportunity to put together multimedia programs without any previous programming knowledge. As children create with Scratch, they learn to think creatively, work collaboratively and reason systematically.

How you write your personal essay shows the admissions committee why you are different from everyone else. It provides information about you that test scores, grades and extracurricular pursuits just cannot. Students are encouraged to bring in college application essay prompts from colleges of their choosing, and we will walk through each step of writing this essay—from gathering ideas to drafting the actual essay to editing and revising the final copy. Students will see first-hand what makes an essay of this type successful or unsuccessful by examining several essays and writing, studying and critiquing their own. Join this workshop and learn how to effectively and persuasively make your application essay stand out from the crowd! Enrollment is limited to 16 students.

UPPER SCHOOL
TECHNOLOGY Summer school for-credit “tech” courses are designed to help students ease the congestion of the regular school year by “off-lining” some of their required courses to the summer. Other students may simply wish to augment their education or explore new interests. All courses are hands-on, project-oriented and focus on real-life scenarios and applications. Often projects integrate topics from other TCA courses for extra reinforcement. Regardless of where you are in the technology spectrum, we offer something for you. Reasonable keyboarding skills are presumed. Generally speaking, all assignments are completed in class with very little (if any) outside work required. Parents take note. If you wish to explore these interests, too, you are welcome to join us. See US Technology Head Kent Pendleton for details. Teachers, do you need to improve your technology skills? Join us. You can learn the practical uses of software and get some professional growth hours in, as well. Use software to make your professional life easier. All summer school technology students are requested to bring their TI calculators, a spiral notebook (journal), a three-ring binder, a pencil, pen and USB flash drive to class the first day. A “supply check” that first day will be one of your first grades for the week, so don’t forget your stuff! Also, please bring a sack lunch and a drink...refrigerators will be available. Students will also bring snacks to class on a rotating basis. Credit cannot be given if a student misses more than four hours of class
The following introductory classes are designed for “beginners” with very little background, confidence or proficiency in the use of contemporary software:
INTRO TO MULTIMEDIA
INTRO TO SPREADSHEET DESIGN
Students will learn to organize, illustrate and deliver ideas and information in a fast and professional manner using Microsoft PowerPoint 2016 and Microsoft Sway. Text, pictures, charts/graphs audio/video will be incorporated into presentations. Advanced animation and Internet importing techniques will be utilized to create customized templates. Basic Photoshop (Creative Cloud) techniques will be introduced and included in projects.
Proficiency with Excel is critical in the business world and is an assumed skill in most college environments. Students will learn and practice the basic functionalities of Excel (Office 365) to design documents that convey both numerical and non-numerical information in interesting, clear and captivating formats. Charts and graphs will aesthetically summarize information. Students will learn how to create formulas from scratch and utilize built-in formulas from Excel’s vast array of built-in functions.

Once you can create a webpage, make it look nice with Photoshop and CSS and get it to do some tricks with JavaScript, the next step is giving it the ability to store and retrieve information from an online database. Once you can do this, the design (and consulting) possibilities are unlimited! PHP and MySQL are technologies that allow you to manipulate, store, retrieve and process data that can dynamically change the fabric of a webpage and allow a user to experience all the features of a modern web experience. Many former TCA students have used this knowledge to begin real-life consulting careers in high school. Join us in this valuable class!

This will be an aggressive (but fun) course, and participants should have a drive and passion to learn and apply their knowledge. Math and science grades will be used to help determine a participant’s likelihood of success.
Instructor: Kent Pendleton
The languages of the web: HTML5 and CSS3 will be explored as we write webpages “from scratch” and utilize web-authoring software (Dreamweaver Creative Cloud and/or Brackets) to expedite their design. Instructor: Kent Pendleton
INTRO TO WEBPAGE PROGRAMMING – JavaScript & Graphics (Honors)

In addition to the static languages of the web (HTML5, CSS), there are other languages that let your webpage actually do something beyond display information. JavaScript and HTML5 allow a user to add some zing to a webpage by providing graphics that can be manipulated with user commands. The exciting possibility allows a platform for game development. See how this is done and get a taste of what computer programming is all about. We will use Dreamweaver Creative Cloud and other platforms to get our webpages to do tricks and rudimentary games.
