Come & See We want to know you better. What enlivens you. What gives you pause. What you wish for and how you strive for those things that make your heart sing. We assume that you hunger for something. Maybe not every moment of the day, but enough times that you find yourself seeking for something more, different, out-of-the-ordinary. Are you exploring your faith? Curious about the Episcopal Church? Wondering how to deepen your sense of spirituality? Intrigued by the phrase, "the Episcopal Branch of the Jesus Movement?" Looking for a place to be engaged spiritually, socially, intellectually? You are invited to come and see at Trinity. ~ Tracey E. Lemon, Editor

RECTOR'S MESSAGE Embarking on a Holy Journey Beloveds of God! Welcome back to the program year at Trinity Episcopal Church. I hope you are rested and ready, because we are embarking on a holy journey together this fall. In July, our Presiding Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Michael Curry, invited all Episcopalians to engage in “The Way of Love: Practices for a Jesus-Centered Life.” These practices are a capacious vision of the communal and individual disciplines that make up our common life as Episcopalians.

It’s been an exciting and busy summer. The Episcopal Church convened its triennial General Convention in Austin, TX. The Implementation Team of Trinity Haven, our home for LGBTQ youth, has shown perseverance and vision building a new and needed ministry. Our Trinity staff has undergone considerable change. Your Vestry and Endowment Trustees, Stewardship Team and Properties committees continue to engage as visionary stewards of Trinity’s material abundance.

The Presiding Bishop’s Rule of Life incorporates many practices in which we already participate, at Trinity and on our own. They are a pattern that invite us to: Turn: Pause, listen, and choose to follow Jesus Learn: Reflect on Scripture regularly, especially on Jesus and his teaching Pray: Dwell intentionally with God daily Worship: Gather in community to thank, praise, and dwell with God Bless: Share faith and unselfishly give and serve Go: Cross boundaries, listen deeply and live like Jesus Rest: Receive the gift of God’s grace, peace, and restoration This Fall we are rolling out and renewing some Trinity programs that might help you to follow this Way of life. Whether through a Discipleship Group or a Wednesday Adult Learning Group, regular communal practices of contemplation and study will propel you to Turn, Learn, and Pray together and on your own. New Wednesday and Friday Eucharists will be additional opportunities for regular corporate Worship during your week.

A Christ-centered community following common disciplines is the core of life together as a Church. Through our practices together we can build new relationships and enliven longstanding ones. As we embark on our 100th year together doing ministry on this corner, I invite you to journey together in the Way of Love, at Trinity and in all parts of your life.

Outreach opportunities abound at Trinity including our Trinity Sunday Dinner, Mid-North Food Pantry, and other campus and partner ministries where we might bless others and be blessed in the process. We will continue to Go out in the world, in service and evangelism to tell and hear stories of Good News.

With blessings and great Love,

And we will seek to Rest together and relish one another, in fellowship events, new community suppers, on retreats and pilgrimages, so we can be recharged and nourished to continue our journey in Christ.

Current Adult Learning Offerings include Spirituality of Discipleship with Father Ben | begins on September 12 Over the course of the Fall, participants will read short works about what it means to follow Christ and live as faithful disciples. Our conversations will be guided by writings from contemporary authors such as Rowan Williams, Barbara Brown Taylor, Richard Rohr, and Sarah Coakley. Through readings and discussion we will discern where we are called at this stage of our lives. Holy Land Pilgrimage Study Group | planning session on September 12 As part of our 100th year celebration, Trinity is hosting a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. In preparation for the trip, adult learners will choose book(s) for discussion. Book ideas include: The Lemon Tree, by Sandy Tolan; Jerusalem, One City, Three Faiths, by Karen Armstrong; and The Last Week by John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg. This group is open to anyone interested; you don't have to be signed up for the pilgrimage. Race & Reconciliation Study Group: The Cross and the Lynching Tree, by James H. Cone | begins September 19 Led by leaders of the Race & Reconciliation Team at Trinity, we'll read and discuss James H. Cone's book chapter by chapter, and explore contemporary meditations (song, visual art, poetry, etc.) responding to the"lethal oppression experienced by African Americans that has been formative for both the faith and civic posture of the black community for a very long time." (Stephen G. Ray Jr., The Cross and the Lynching Tree, The Christian Century, January 30, 2012 ) Call the office to inquire about buying the book. Back to the Basics Classes with Mother Julia | begins in October A series of 6-week classes to introduce and re-introduce you to our faith life as christians, and how community life in church feeds our inner call for more spirituality in a demanding world . Topics include: how to read the bible, Anglicanism and the Episcopal Church, life at Trinity, and more.

Discipleship Groups at Trinity In October 2017, Father Ben introduced the idea of Discipleship Groups to Trinity Adult Learners. Patterned after the Discipleship Group model created by the Restoration Project (www.therestorationproject.net), Trinity Discipleship Groups started forming in January 2018 and are grounded in intentional practices of liturgy, prayer, and fellowship. Since then, multiple small groups have evolved and continue to meet. The frequency and structure of each group is defined by the individuals within each group. Examples include groups that meet

in homes for a shared meal; hybrid Discipleship Group and Book Group; and a group discerning if it will divide into two new groups to accommodate a better small group experience. The learning so far: Discipleship Groups are life-giving intentional groups that generate a loving community of parishioners caring for the spiritual and personal growth of each member. Interested in being part of a Discipleship Group? Contact Father Ben: banthony@trinitychurchindy.org [in the heart of Indianapolis] 5

Experience the wonder and mystery of the ancient Choral Evensong. As the Trinity Choir prepares for its 2019 pilgrimage to England and France, we offer several services of Choral Evensong. Evensong follows the traditional pattern in The Book of Common Prayer since 1549 and consists of psalms, canticles, and anthems for the evening. The structure of Evensong has three basic components: preparation, lessons, and prayer. The service invites respite and inspiration for our busy modern lives. To learn more, attend the Adult Forum with Michael Messina on Sunday, September 16 - see page 9.

Pastoral Care at Trinity The ministry of caring is at the heart of the church's life. It may include hospital visitation, counseling, and ministries of shared presence, listening, and support. Contact the church to speak with a clergy member when you want to discuss spiritual or theological matters; when you have reason to celebrate; or need spiritual comfort. And please know, the clergy at Trinity expect to be called to the side of our parishioners during times of crisis, sudden illness, or death. They will offer prayers, be a spiritual support, and, if need be, offer last rites and prayers for the dying.

Friday Healing Eucharist | 12:15 - 12:45PM | beginning September 21 With the new program year, Trinity will offer a weekly Healing Eucharist beginning Friday, September 21. This contemplative service will offer readings from scripture, a short meditation, silence, and prayers for those parishioners on our prayer list and anyone on your heart. Anointing with oil will be offered as well. This healing service will take place in the Church Chancel. All are welcome to participate.

Prayers of the People Prayers for our family and friends are updated each week. Names are taken off the list as the requested need and time for prayer has passed. We keep a list of prayer requests in the church office; this list includes the prayer recipient, the person who placed the request, and the date the prayers began. Prayer requests will stay on the list for one month unless otherwise requested. The Trinity Prayer List is included in every Sunday leaflet. Most recent additions are spoken aloud during our services. We encourage parishioners to take the list home and include them in their personal prayers. As always, please offer your own prayers aloud during the Prayers of the People when invited to do so.

If you would like to add a person to the prayer list, contact the office via email pastoralcare@trinitychurchindy.org or by calling (317)Â 926-1346.
