A Celebration of Absalom Jones

Inside this Issue Stewardship page 2 Christian Formation page 3 Children and Family Ministries page 4 Young Adults page 5 Trinity Connections pages 5, 6, 7

Ours is a Savior who puts love of the other at the center of being; ours is a Faith which calls us to build and nurture a “blessed community.” Trinity Church’s commitment to undo racism embodies these truths; and we welcome every opportunity to honor those saints in Episcopal history who have stood against racial injustice. One such opportunity will be on Saturday, February 17, 2018, starting at 11:00 am, when we will host an important event in collaboration with the Union of Black Episcopalians, our Diocese’s Racial Reconciliation Committee, Members of Historic St. James AME Church, and St. Luke Episcopal Church, among others, to celebrate the life and ministry of Absalom Jones (1746-1818). All Trinity Church members are encouraged to attend this service, to be followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. Reverend Jones, born into slavery in Delaware, bought his own freedom and served as a lay minister for St. George’s Methodist Episcopal Church. He dedicated his ministry to helping establish an interracial congregation of both white and black members for this church, and went on to become an elected overseer of the Free African Society, an organization for black Christians in Philadelphia. In his steadfast denunciation of slavery and in his tireless preaching on behalf of racial reconciliation within communities of faith, Reverend Jones came to be known as “the first black bishop of the Episcopal Church” in the United States. Please consider this early Lenten opportunity to join in an ecumenical celebration of our “blessed community.”

Gratitude Report As an early Carnival season already begins its final weeks, celebration is definitely in the air in New Orleans! Here at Trinity Church, we celebrate for a different reason - in grateful thanks for the 432 or so families who said “yes” during the end-of- year 2017 pledge season. They have, as of January 12, expressed their faith in God’s generosity in a tangible way, pledging to return a total of $1,301,266 of what God has first given them for the good work of Trinity Church. Praise God and Hallelujah! Although slightly under our stated goal of $1.4 million and less than the total pledged last year, we are no less grateful and even more committed to stewarding those gifts responsibly. Now it’s time to get to work! And if you haven’t submitted your 2018 pledge yet, it is never too late. Thank you so very much. Last year, at the October meeting, you may not know that your Vestry created something new: a standing Stewardship Committee. Rather than reinventing a working committee every fall to manage the pledge drive and then disband, the Vestry recognized that Christian stewardship doesn’t happen for just three months each year, and that a more measured and purposeful approach towards Stewardship was important. Stewardship - as our guest preacher the Rev. John Talbird noted last November during his homily - “is everything we do, with everything we have, all the time.” All the time. We have a duty to contemplate God’s generosity for each one of us, every day, and begin to ask some new questions. A new question for myself that I have been trying to live in is this: “Given the extraordinary wealth that God has showered upon my family, rather than simply consider how much I should give away to charity each year, perhaps instead I should consider how much of that wealth I can morally afford to keep - if I’m going to be a faithful steward?” It’s a very difficult question that, regardless of the answer, I believe bears good fruit. Your new Stewardship Committee consists of seven dedicated individuals who I know are excited to begin this work in a new way. I am honored to chair the first iteration of this group and we ask for your prayers of support and guidance. Along with me, the current committee members are: Michelle Cox, Curt Flournoy, Gordo Kolb, Marky Murphy, Alice Parkerson and, of course, Raina O’Neil, Trinity’s tireless Development Director. We will meet and report monthly to the Vestry. Check in here each month as a different member of the committee will submit a “Gratitude Report” and we’ll do our best to keep you updated on stewardship-related matters in that way. Please don’t hesitate to contact any one of us with comments, suggestions, criticisms or condolences! In service, Jim Theis Stewardship committee chairman Vestry member

Confirmation/Reception/Reaffirmation We will offer a 6-week class for all those, both youth and aduts, interested in being confirmed, received or reaffirmed. The class will take place Sunday mornings beginning March 4, 2018, from 9:15-10:15 am. The Bishop will lead the worship service on Sunday, May 13, 2018, at 10:30 am. Any young person under the age of 16 is expected to attend all classes with a parent and/or adult sponsor. Preparation for confirmation is grounded in our Baptismal Covenant and explores the questions: Who is God? Who is Jesus? What is the Church? And how are we to live? These classes where we explore our faith are open to anyone interested in confirmation, in reaffirming their baptismal vows, in being received by the Episcopal Church, or those who are just curious about the Episcopal tradition. If you are interested in taking this class, please register by February 1 here: bit.ly/ExploreFaith2018. An informational meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 28, 2018, at 9:30 am in the Chapel. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions.
