After more than twelve months of prayerful discernment, the Search Committee and Vestry are pleased to announce that the Vestry has accepted the Committee’s unanimous recommendation and called The Reverend Andrew R. Thayer, Rector of Church of the Ascension, Montgomery, Alabama, to be the 26th Rector of Trinity Church, New Orleans. Andy came to Church of the Ascension after serving on the cathedral ttaff at Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford, England, where he was studying for his Doctorate of Philosophy in Theology. Prior to his time in England, Andy served as Rector of Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church and Academy, Corpus Christi, Texas. He received his Master of Divinity from the School of Theology at the The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee. Andy and his wife Kelsey will be celebrating their 23rd anniversary on June 4. They and their children, William (14), Natalie (12) and James (6), are looking forward to being part of the Trinity Church and School family. To see Andy’s message to Trinity and his biography visit - https://trinitynola.com/new-rector. The Search Committee took care to listen carefully to you, our parish, as they created our new Parish Profile and began the journey to call our next Rector. The recommendation to the Vestry to call Andy came with peace, joy and the certainty that we had found whom God was calling to lead Trinity into its future. Everyone on the Search Committee, (Nell Bolton, Brooke Duncan, Cres Gardner, Amory Levert, Rivers Lelong, Heather Lonian, Alice Parkerson, Leila Schumacher, Tim Trapolin, and Sarah Young, along with advisors Catherine Freeman and John Wogan, and Co-chairs Kathy Eastman and King Logan), gave unselfishly of their time and their talents. The journey was unforgettable and a deeply spiritual experience. We were blessed with the support of Bishop Morris Thompson, and guided by the knowledgeable and supportive presence of Canon Shannon Manning. Trinity has also been blessed to have The Reverend Corky Carlisle as our Interim Rector. He has been a wonderful pastor throughout his time with us, providing guidance and encouraging us all to do the work we are called to do. This is an exciting time for Trinity as we prepare to thank Corky and to welcome Andy. We are thankful for all of you, who have entrusted us with this discernment. Your support and your prayers have helped us throughout this process. Kathy Eastman, Co-Chair, Search Committee

Stewardship Over the summer months, as many of our parishioners escape the heat and humidity of New Orleans for the solace of cooler climates, Trinity in the past has seen a substantial downturn in giving. If you are traveling this summer, please remember that you don’t have to be “in church” to give. Trinity offers multiple ways to give including text-to-give (text 504-504-217- 2015), online giving through our website (trinitynola.com/donatenow), and recurring giving. If you haven’t already done so, please consider enrolling to make automated weekly or monthly gifts. This is a fast and easy way to support Trinity, especially during the summer months. Of course you can mail your check in also! Thank you and blessings to you for a wonderful summer!

Feasting!!!

In New Orleans, feasting is an ongoing recreational activity. In the calendar of the Church, the fifty days of the feasting of Eastertide feasting follow the forty days of Lenten fasting. In the Episcopal Church, the seven major feast days of the liturgical year are Easter, Ascension, Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, All Saints, Christmas, and Epiphany. The eve of one of these feasts— Ascension Day, which falls forty days after Easter— was celebrated with an effervescent worship service on Wednesday, May 24. At the close of the Eucharist, bubbles appeared and ascended toward the heavens just as Jesus ascended. Those young in age and young at heart were all uplifted by the delightfully unexpected whimsy, exuberance and joy of the moment. A delicious dinner capped off a wonderful evening of feasting and fellowship. In June, two more major feast days occur. Pentecost Sunday is June 4 and Trinity Sunday is June 11. Pentecost, which occurs on the fiftieth day after Easter Sunday, is the birthday of the Church. This is the day when we celebrate the arrival of the Holy Spirit. As written in Acts, when Jesus’ followers were gathered together, “suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and rested on each of them. All were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the spirit gave them ability” (2:2-4). We are encouraged to wear red to commemorate this anniversary of our empowerment as Christ’s Body. The observance of Trinity Sunday marks the conclusion of the liturgical commemorations of the life of Jesus Christ and gift of the Holy Spirit. Trinity Sunday is especially significant for our parish because it is also our “name day” feast. Churches dedicated to saints celebrate a “patronal feast” day. However, since Trinity is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, we claim the Holy Trinity—God in all three Persons— as our “patron.” A special coffee hour will follow the 10:30 am service on this special day for us Trinitarians!

He is a Franciscan priest of the New Mexico Province and founder and academic Dean of the Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Fr. Richard’s teaching is grounded in the Franciscan alternative orthodoxy—practices of contemplation and self-emptying, expressing itself in radical compassion, particularly for the socially marginalized. Fr. Richard is the author of numerous books, including The Naked Now, Breathing Under Water, Falling Upward, and Eager to Love: The Alternative Way of Francis of Assisi. Ascension Eve Service

Mission and Outreach Loaves and Fishes Africa God’s love is like the flow of clean water. Our mission partners, Pastor Moses Moguro and his wife, Esther, continue their work in Nairobi, Kenya helping to make and distribute homemade water filters to families and schools in an effort to stop preventable illness. In the past six months they have have been able to distribute handmade water filters reaching over 260 children and families in some of the world’s poorest neighborhoods. Through the water filter program they also share the love of God and offer the Gospel of Jesus Christ and pray with the people they serve. The Women of Trinity Church have generously supported this ministry. Will you consider adding your donation? One donation of $25 can buy a water filter that will last a family of four for one year. A donation of $250 can help educate a child for one year. https://trinitynola.com/ donatenow.

Trinity Connections Trinity Treasures Book Review Ordinary Grace

by William Kent Krueger Don’t miss this coming-of-age story about Frank Drum, the thirteen year old son of a Presbyterian minister and a mother who finds herself in a life she didn’t expect. Although young, Frank must deal with the adult realities of death and of murder, an act that creates a life-changing mystery. Ordinary Grace is reminiscent of Run With the Horsemen by Ferrol Sams (soon to also be in Trinity Treasures!) and The Painted House by John Grisham, both great reads as well. Winner of several awards, including the Edgar Award, Ordinary Grace is a novel beautifully written, filled with wonderful characters, a real sense of place and time, and lessons for us all. It is also about the price we pay for wisdom and the enduring grace of God. -Sally Cockerham
